The heavyweight bout in Gypsum did not disappoint as Southeast of Saline Lady and Chapman played two hard-fought battles on Friday night, splitting the series down the middle.

Game one, a 13-inning epic that took nearly three hours to complete, saw the Lady Irish hand SES their first loss of the season 5-1 before the Lady Trojans bounced back to take game two in a darkness-shortened 4-3 affair.

With these results, Southeast moves to 9-1 on the year while the Irish improve to 7-3.

The first of these contests was a pitcher's duel from the very beginning, with Madalyn Harold and Lexi Jacobson each cruising through the other’s lineup.

The Lady Trojans got themselves on the board when a throwing error on a stolen base allowed Brielle Ptacek to cross home plate, but the Irish would respond in kind, capitalizing on an SES miscue to bring Zoey Peterson in and tie the game at one apiece.

From there, both pitchers buckled down and it quickly became apparent that seven innings would not be enough to decide a winner.

Jacobson stranded five potential go-ahead runs from the eighth through the 12th while Harold prevented four Lady Trojan baserunners from crossing the plate to end the game.

Then, in the top of the 13th, the Irish broke through.

Kaci Heller and Maddie Harold led off the inning with a single and a double before Southeast intentionally walked the bases loaded to create a force at the plate.

Teagan Ellis smoked a line drive right at the Lady Trojan’s first baseman who tried to double Heller off at third, but the throw was offline and Heller came in to break the deadlock after six extra innings.

Chapman would add three more insurance runs and with support finally at her back, Harold slammed the door shut for a thrilling 5-1 finish.

Maddie Harold lived up to her title once again as the “mad dog” threw 195 pitches in 13 innings, including 114 for strikes and a gargantuan 23 strikeouts, walking just five and allowing just one run on five hits.

With the sun already beginning to set, game two got underway and Chapman picked up right where they left off, striking for two runs in the top of the first.

SES would claw two of those runs back in the second and earn two more in the third as the Lady Trojan bats began to warm, with Abby Wyatt crushing a bases-clearing triple to give SES a 4-2 lead in the third.

In the top of the fourth, a scary sight ensued as a play at the plate left Chapman third baseman Abby Martinez motionless on the ground at home plate.

The on-field staff took every precaution, tending to the senior for nearly an hour before she was carted off the field and taken to a nearby ambulance.

Thankfully, Martinez was able to walk out of the ambulance under her own power and did not seek additional medical attention before the conclusion of the game, confirming with Coach Cook this morning that she was okay.

From there, the contest resumed with a somber tone and after just one inning and change, the game was officially called due to darkness with Southeast in the lead 4-3.

The Lady Trojans will travel to take on another NCKL foe next week in Clay Center while the Lady Irish return home to host Council Grove.

Southeast Splits Softball Series with Lady Irish

Two of the hottest softball teams in the state of Kansas will collide in Gypsum on Friday afternoon as Southeast of Saline prepares to entertain Chapman.

The Lady Trojans enter this two-game set at a perfect 8-0 while the Lady Irish come in at 6-2, having tangled with a pair of state-caliber foes in Clay Center and Rock Creek.

For Southeast of Saline, this represents another opportunity to take on a larger opponent and face some of the best pitching in Class 3A.

“We actively seek out challenging opponents and this year we’ve added teams like McPherson and Wamego to our schedule,” SES head coach Pesha Ptacek said. “To be the best you have to beat the best and we want real measuring sticks on what we have to work on.”

For the Irish, this game is a chance to continue taking the next step, as Chapman has already improved from their 8-12 finish last year, where they were swept by the Lady Trojans.

“Southeast of Saline always has a good ball club and during this stretch of our season, we know we have to play well to have a chance to win,” Chapman head coach Kyle Cook said.

This game will feature elite pitching on both sides, with Lady Irish ace Madalynn Harold taking the circle for game one and boasting a 0.79 ERA, 51 strikeouts and only nine walks.

“Chapman has a strong pitcher and they have a lot of young girls that play a lot of summer ball so we expect them to be a worthy opponent,” Ptacek said. “We need to play clean today and we need to continue executing the things that we do well.”

For the Lady Trojans, the 1-2 punch of Lexi Jacobson and Bryna Baird has continued to stifle opponents, with the two combining to strike out 56 while walking 18 and posting a team ERA south of 1.50.

“We feel confident with Maddie pitching game one but we have to play good defense and we’ll need timely hits,” Cook said.

First pitch for this doubleheader will be at 3:00 on the campus of Southeast of Saline and once again both games will be broadcast on-demand, with live audio and video being made available after the games on Salina Post.

🥎 Lady Irish Visit Southeast for Heavyweight Doubleheader

Hello, and Happy Friday everybody it's Tyler Henry back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. 

On Thursday, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice surrendered to police on charges including aggravated assault, after he and another driver of a speeding sports car allegedly caused a crash involving a half dozen vehicles on a Dallas highway last month. 

A spokeswoman for Rice's attorney confirmed to the Associated Press Thursday evening that Rice turned himself into the Glenn Heights Police Department. Rice was booked into the Regional Jail in DeSoto and was released on bond on Thursday night. 

Meanwhile, in Kansas City, Bobby Witt Jr. had four hits including two home runs and five RBI as the Kansas City Royals used a nine-run first inning to defeat the Houston Astros 13-3&nbsp; on Thursday, completing the three game sweep and extending their win streak to seven games.&nbsp; 

Vinnie Pasquantino&nbsp;who came into Wednesday's game hitting just 108 with no RBI was three for five with three driven in and it's now batting .222 with eight driven it. 

And finally speaking of diamond sports today, two of the hottest softball teams in the state of Kansas will collide at 3 p.m.&nbsp; as the Southeast of Saline Lady Trojans prepare to host the Chapman Lady Irish in Gypsum.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — April 12

The Southeast of Saline softball team’s season-opening tear continued on Tuesday, as the Lady Trojans swept a two-game set with their rivals from Sacred Heart.

With mercy-rule victories of 12-2 and 16-0, the Lady Trojans move to 8-0 on the year and 4-0 in league play while the Lady Knights fall to 3-5 and 1-3.

Southeast wasted no time getting to work in the opener of this two-game set, striking for eight runs in the bottom of the first and capitalizing on four Sacred Heart errors.

The Lady Knights settled in after that but the damage was done as SES added two more in the third and one in the fourth and fifth to close out game one 12-2 in short order.

In the circle Lexi Jacobson was dynamite, mowing down 11 Sacred Heart hitters and allowing just two runs on five hits without issuing a single walk all day.

At the plate, seven different Lady Trojans would record a hit, with Brielle Ptacek and Bryna Baird reaching base four times each, including an RBI double for Baird to put the finishing touch on the opener.

While game one stayed fairly competitive late, game two was a massacre, as SES scored 13 runs in the first and three in the second, winning a shutout in just 2.5 innings by a final score of 16-0.

Bryna Baird was excellent in the circle for the Lady Trojans, striking out three and allowing just four total baserunners in the shutout.

Southeast scored 16 runs on seven hits, walking eight times and being hit by four more pitches.

Maddie Harris posted the best day overall between the two games, finishing her day 4-5 at the plate with 4 RBI.

The Lady Knights will return to Salina to take on Valley Heights while the Lady Trojans stay in Gypsum to host the Chapman Lady Irish.

Both games were broadcast last night and are now available to view on-demand.

🥎 Southeast Sweeps Lady Knights to Remain Perfect at 8-0

The 2nd-ranked Sacred Heart baseball team continued to roll on Tuesday night, sweeping rival Southeast of Saline in a two-game set.

With victories of 7-0 and 7-4 the Knights march on to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in league play while the Trojans fall to 6-6 and 2-2.

Game one was a true pitchers' duel, with the two teams combining for just seven hits, split almost evenly down the middle.

Sacred Heart would score all 7 runs of the contest, with two in the second and three in the sixth bookended by a lone run in the fifth and seventh.

While the bats took time to warm up, the Knights found other ways to get runners aboard, capitalizing on nine walks, three errors, and a pair of hit batsmen.

The real star of the show was Evan Bogart, who tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and seven walks while striking out six.

Game two was more of a back-and-forth affair with Sacred Heart jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first before Southeast clawed both of those runs back in the second.

After a few scoreless frames, the Knights would tally another run in the fifth, and two more for insurance in the sixth and seventh, which proved to be enough as SES scored just two more runs in the final frame, falling 7-4.

This game saw better days at the plate for both teams, with an evenly spread 16 hits this time around.

It was a team effort for the Sacred Heart lineup as six different Knights recorded a hit, and four brought at least one run in to score.

On the bump, Cam Yohe and Jett Samuelson combined to allow just four runs on seven hits, with Yohe striking out six and earning the win.

The Knights will be back in action on Friday when the team returns to Salina to take on Valley Heights, the Trojans meanwhile will continue their homestand on Friday as they battle the Chapman Fighting Irish.

⚾️ #2 Sacred Heart Maintains Undefeated Status in Sweep of SES

On Tuesday it was announced that after a monster performance Kansas Wesleyan slugger&nbsp;<a href="https://kwucoyotes.com/sports/baseball/roster/adrian-villalobos/8188">Adrian Villalobos</a>&nbsp;has been selected not just as KCAC Player of the Week but as NAIA National Player of the Week as well. And with good reason.

&nbsp;<a href="https://kwucoyotes.com/sports/baseball/roster/adrian-villalobos/8188">Villalobos</a>&nbsp;helped KWU extend their winning streak to 18 games finishing his five in a week with video game type numbers. The Jr ended of the five games set 13 for 17 at the plate with six homeruns- 15 driven in and a batting average of .785 to go with a slugging percentage of 1.94.

Speaking of baseball after a bit of a slow start, the Kansas City Royals have rallied and thanks to a Salvador Perez game-winning single last night defeated the Astros to win their fifth straight game. The run began with a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox and could continue tonight as the Royals host the Houston Astros for game two of the series at 6:40 p.m.&nbsp;

 SES softball rolled their rival with wins of 12-2 and 16-0. While the second-ranked nights of Sacred Heart remained undefeated with victories of 7-0 and 7-4.&nbsp;

A pair of area foes will collide in Gypsum this afternoon as the Southeast of Saline baseball and softball teams prepare to welcome in the Knights and Lady Knights of Sacred Heart.

With NCAA play just starting to heat up, it’s all to play for in Central Kansas today, with all four squads looking to gain a foothold in the league standings.

On the baseball diamond, the Knights come in ranked as the #2 team in Class 1-2A, and will be looking to keep their resume unblemished at a perfect 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Sacred Heart has already dispatched Republic County in a doubleheader sweep last week, a team the Trojans also handled their business with to open league action.

Despite a brief stumble at the hands of #8 Abilene from Class 4A last week, Southeast of Saline still looks strong at 6-4 overall and 2-0 in league play, boasting a run differential of +72 ahead of this doubleheader.

On the softball diamond, the Lady Trojans will also continue their search for perfection at 6-0 (2-0 in league play) after dispatching a 4A foe in a doubleheader sweep at Abilene last week.

With a veteran-heavy squad, Southeast has been rolling since opening day, having outscored their first six opponents by a mighty 57 runs.

On the other side of this doubleheader duel, the Lady Knights come in at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play after splitting their doubleheader with Republic County last week.

Sacred Heart is one of the youngest teams in the state of Kansas, sporting a roster with just one senior newcomer, and just three junior returners from a season ago.

SES Welcomes Sacred Heart for Baseball and Softball Doubleheaders in Gypsum

Hello and Happy Tuesday everybody it's Tyler Henry back with another&nbsp; KINA&nbsp; Sports Update presented by Salina regional orthopedic and sports medicine. 

Last night saw the official end of this year's NCAA March Madness tournament from the men's side and for a second year running the UConn Huskies are the kings of March.

Dan Hurley's squad claimed a national title with a 75 to 60 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers becoming the first repeat champs since Florida back in 2006 and 2007 and the first win back to back title games by double digits since the UCLA teams of old. The Huskies made everything look easy from the beginning posting a new NCAA record plus 140 point differential for the entire tournament.

The Southeast of Saline softball team faced a true road test on Friday night, traveling to Cowgirl country to take on a 4A foe in Abilene, and emerged victorious with their third doubleheader sweep of the season.

With wins of 3-2 and 9-4, the Lady Trojans remain perfect on the year at 6-0 while the Cowgirls fall to 2-4.

Game one of this doubleheader was a true pitcher's duel to the very end, as Lexi Jacobson and Hallie Johnson matched wits in the circle, each carrying a shutout into the fifth inning.

SES was finally able to get on the board scratching across two runs in the fifth, and adding an insurance run in the seventh, eeking out a 3-2 win with the Cowgirls tallying a run in both the sixth and seventh inning.

Once again it was the top of the Lady Trojan lineup that came through at the plate, with Lexi Jacobson, Maddie Harris and Brielle Ptacek driving in one run each to secure the win.

For Jacobson’s part in the circle the senior tossed seven complete innings and surrendered just two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking four.

Johnson finished her outing with an almost identical result, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks.

Both offenses found their rhythm early in a higher-scoring game two with Abilene leading 3-2 after one, and the game tied 4-4 after 3.

In the fifth, SES would finally break the game open striking for four more runs, and putting the cherry on top in the seventh to take the win 9-4.

Of the 13 Southeast hits in this game, 12 would come from the top six spots in the Lady Trojan lineup, with Brielle Ptacek and her 3 RBI leading the charge.

In the circle Bryna Baird allowed just two earned runs in another complete game, striking out six and walking just three.

The Lady Trojans will return to Gypsum next Tuesday for a doubleheader with rival Sacred Heart while the Cowgirls do the same in Abilene against Marysville.

Lady Trojans Outlast Abilene to Remain Undefeated

The 8th-ranked Abilene Cowboys continued their impressive start to the 2024 baseball season, stopping the white-hot Southeast of Saline Trojans dead in their tracks in a Friday doubleheader sweep.

With a run-rule-shortened win of 11-1 and a comeback victory of 7-6 the Cowboys move to 5-1 while Southeast snaps their six-game win streak at 6-4.

Abilene wasted no time jumping out to a big lead in game one, batting around the order in each of the first two innings to take a 10-0 advantage into the third.

From there, Southeast’s Treytan Olson was able to stem the tide, but the Trojan bats were silenced in a dominant showing from future Cloud Community College pitcher Stocton Timbrook.

The Cowboy senior struck out the first six batters of the game and completed 4.2 innings of work without surrendering a single hit, allowing just one run to come home on a walk in the final inning of an 11-1 Abilene victory.

Game two looked like it would be the Trojan’s revenge, as SES struck for one run in each of the first three innings and three more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead into the sixth.

Down to their final six outs, Abilene rattled off six unanswered runs in the sixth to turn the table, capped off by a 2 RBI single for Drew Hansen to take their first and only lead of the game.

From there, Zach Miller was able to slam the door shut, as the senior struck out the side after allowing a leadoff single, concluding his five innings of work with nine Ks.

Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday as the Cowboys play host to Marysville and the Trojans welcome in their rival in Sacred Heart.

Abilene Baseball Halts Trojan Advance, Sweeps Doubleheader 11-1, 7-6

Two area powerhouse programs will collide in Abilene this evening as the 3-1 Cowboys prepare to host the 6-2 Trojans of Southeast of Saline.

Despite both finishing with stellar seasons in 2023, these two programs entered 2024 with drastically different expectations and will have an opportunity to test their mettle against one another today.

While Abilene has only played in four games thus far, the Cowboys have made those games count, sweeping a 5A foe in Salina South and splitting with a fellow 4A state tournament team in Rock Creek last week.

“We’ve been pretty good overall on the mound, in the field and at the plate,” Abilene head coach Travis Bartley said. “We don’t always have all three going at the same time but so far we’ve been solid in all three phases of the game.”

The Cowboys will play their first two games at home ranked as the #8 team in Class 4A by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches, and will be eager to keep their foot to the floor after narrowly sweeping the Trojans a season ago.

On the other side of this matchup, Southeast of Saline finds themselves in the midst of an offensive revival after a slow 0-2 start.

In their last six games, the Trojans are a perfect 6-0 with a run differential of +98

All of this has been done with a lineup that features just two returners from last year’s league title-winning team, and a youth movement that sees just two seniors in and out of the starting nine.

While it’s been smooth sailing for the last two weeks, the Cowboys represent the tallest task the Trojans have faced this season, and all in Abilene should anticipate a good set of hard-fought battles on Friday night.

“Southeast always has pretty solid teams that are very competitive on the 3A side and they’re always in it toward the end of the year,” Bartley said. “There are no easy ones there but we enjoy playing this series.”

First pitch of this doubleheader is scheduled for 4:30 at Abilene High School, and both games will be streamed free with live audio and video on the Salina Post courtesy of Smart Insurance and Don’s Tire and Supply.

Trojans Travel to Abilene for Showdown With 8th-Ranked Cowboys

The Southeast of Saline track and field teams put on a strong showing at Thursday's Concordia Invitational, with the boy's team pulling out a close win and the girl's team on the podium in third.

All in all 13 individuals would medal in at least one event, including seven individual event winners between the two teams.

On the boy's side, 168 points for the Trojans was enough to narrowly hold off another state contender in Buhler, who finished the meet with 151.

Both teams ran away from the rest of the field as the third-place finishers from Beloit mustered just 64 points on the day

The girl's side saw similar dominance from Beloit and Buhler who tied for the win with 136 points, but among the rest of the field, the Lady Trojans rose to the top, ousting Marysville with 67 points for a third-place finish.

Trojan Track Opens Season With 1-3 Finish in Concordia

Hello and Happy Friday everybody it's Tyler Henry back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. 

On Thursday, it was announced that Kansas State head men's basketball coach Jerome Tang had made a significant addition to his 2024-25 roster with the signing of impact transfer guard Doug McDaniel. At five foot 11 175 pounds, McDaniel arrives from K State after two seasons in Michigan, where he led the Wolverines in scoring three point field goals assists steals and minutes as just a sophomore. 

In his two seasons in Ann Arbor, he averaged 12 points on 40% shooting, including 36% from downtown to go with 4.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 32 minutes per game while playing in 60 out of possible 66 games which 52 starts.

Yesterday was also a good day for the Kansas City Royals is Nelson Velasquez and MJ Melendez each homered and drove in two runs, helping lead Seth Lugo to attend one victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Right fielder Hunter Renfro throughout a potential tying run at the plate in the sixth inning before Kansas City broke the game wide open with eight runs in the seventh.
