Saline County Jail Bookings, July 11

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers reported to a residence located in the 400 block of Baker Street on Monday after a 34-year-old Salina woman called 911 after a man choked and bit her.

Feldman said officers arrived at the scene on Monday, July 8 at 5 p.m.&nbsp;

"She indicated that she had an associate and that he had been at the residence," said SPD Cpt. James Feldman. "She left one of the rooms, when she heard glass breaking in another room."

When she came out of the room, she had her cell phone in her hand. The associate came up and ripped it out of her hands, Feldman said. 

SPD later identified the man as 29-year-old Joseph Daulton.

The 34-year-old woman became afraid of Daulton and began to hit him so she could run away. She then went to another room, and he followed her.

"He told her she would not be leaving. She put her shoes on and said she needed to drink," Feldman said. "He then came up around from behind her, put his arm around her neck and choked her. She had difficulty breathing. As he continued, he ended up biting her ear and the left side of her back."

Daulton told the woman he would return her phone if she did not call the police.

"She was still not let out of the room. She again asked for a drink," Feldman said. "She attempted to get out of the bathroom window, when he grabbed her and pulled her back in."

According to the report from the SPD, Daulton allowed her to go into another room to talk. She told Daulton she was leaving. He responded by grabbing her from behind again and bit her on the cheek. 

"She then grabbed a rod and hit him and kicked him to get him away from her. She grabbed her bag and got outside, where she called the police," Feldman said.

Daulton was not at the scene when officers arrived Monday evening. 

"We tried to locate him, but he had left before our arrival," Feldman said. "Yesterday [July 9] at around 7 p.m. We had information he [Daulton] was in the 200 block of North Phillips."

Officers found Daulton at the residence and took him into custody without incident. 

Daulton was booked into the Saline County Jail with the following requested charges: aggravated domestic battery, robbery, kidnapping, criminal restraint, domestic battery, and criminal damage to property

Saline County Jail Bookings, July 10

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspect on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 9:30p.m. July 7,&nbsp;a police officer in the city of Hoyt conducted a traffic stop on 2000 Ford Econoline van for various traffic infractions, near the intersection of 1st&nbsp;Street and Eastern Ave. in the city of Hoyt, according to Police Chief Dan Wentling.

The driver of the van, David Eugene Savard, 36, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, felony interference with a Law Enforcement Officer, Identity Theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, driving while suspended, transporting an open container, illegal registration, and no proof of insurance.

A passenger in the van, Julieanna Dean Corbett, 23, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, possession of THC, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container.

Another passenger in the van, Nathan Paul Leonard, 24, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail for transporting an open container. Jackson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the arrests.

3 jailed in Kansas for drinking and driving, transporting drugs

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. - Joseph S. Bonsall, 76, of Hendersonville, Tennessee passed on to Glory on July 9, 2024, from complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, according to a media release.

He leaves behind his precious wife, Mary Ann, daughters Jennifer and Sabrina, granddaughter Breanne, grandson Luke, two great grandsons, Chance and Grey, and a sister, Nancy. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph S. Bonsall Sr. and Lillie Bonsall.

As a 50-year member of the American music group The Oak Ridge Boys, Joe was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and inducted into the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame.

Joseph is also the author of 11 books including his latest, a memoir entitled I See Myself, which releases in November. Joe loved to sing. He loved to read. He loved to write. He loved to play banjo. He loved working on the farm. And he loved the Philadelphia Phillies. But Jesus and his family always came first—and we will see him again on the Promised Day.

At the request of Joe, there will be no funeral. Joe Bonsall, Oak Ridge Boys singer, dies from ALS complications

A few months ago, I registered my two children for two weeks of swimming lessons at our town’s pool. Registering my 8-year-old daughter for lessons was a nonnegotiable. She needs to continue learning skills that’ll help her keep her head above water while also gaining strength as a swimmer. My son, on the other hand, had a choice of taking lessons or not. 

When I presented him with the option of lessons, I warned him that he’d probably be the oldest kid in his swim level. I told him I’d again register him for the highest level offered at the pool. He easily met all of the required swim skills in that same level last summer, so this would be more like a review rather than an assessment. I half thought he’d decide to pass on lessons because of my warning. 

After a few minutes of contemplation, my son announced that if taking 45-minute swimming lessons guaranteed him pool time for two weeks, he’d do it!

Summer for my family is definitely spent a little differently than others. Yes, there’s guaranteed pool time in the form of swimming lessons for two weeks. Yes, there’s summer ball games with friends, and occasionally there’s a friend that can come over to play or spend the night. But summer for my family also means a steady flow of farmwork, and the kids are an active part of it all. Because of that, we generally experience long summer days and sleep hard at night before getting up and starting the day before it gets too hot.

Between wheat harvest, planting of fall crops, irrigation chores, checking livestock and debris cleanup following summer storms, my two kids will always have a different summertime story compared to their classmates. 

There have been times I have questioned my decision to haul the kids to town every day for two weeks during our busiest time of the year. Scheduling swim lessons in the middle of winter would work better with our farming schedule. However, I have to remind myself they need to experience the joys of summer as children. 

Yes, they need to understand the value of work. Yes, they need to be given responsibilities. Yes, they need to see that being part of a farming family includes helping when needed.

And honestly, leaving the farm and driving to town so the kids can get their guaranteed pool time also means that I have an opportunity to relax in the shade and read a book or listen to a podcast for 45 minutes by myself – something I might not do without this intentionally built-in time during the summer. It’s been a pleasant opportunity to pause and enjoy short breaks during an otherwise very busy time of the year.

The joys of summer can be had at any age, it’s just a matter of recognizing when the opportunity presents itself and making the time to take advantage of those moments.

Registering my 8-year-old daughter for lessons was a nonnegotiable. She needs to continue learning skills that’ll help her keep her head above water while also gaining strength as a swimmer. My son, on the other hand, had a choice of taking lessons or not. When I presented him with the option of lessons, I warned him that he’d probably be the oldest kid in his swim level. I told him I’d again register him for the highest level offered at the pool. He easily met all of the required swim skills in that same level last summer, so this would be more like a review rather than an assessment. I half thought he’d decide to pass on lessons because of my warning. After a few minutes of contemplation, my son announced that if taking 45-minute swimming lessons guaranteed him pool time for two weeks, he’d do it!Summer for my family is definitely spent a little differently than others. Yes, there’s guaranteed pool time in the form of swimming lessons for two weeks. Yes, there’s summer ball games with friends, and occasionally there’s a friend that can come over to play or spend the night. But summer for my family also means a steady flow of farmwork, and the kids are an active part of it all. Because of that, we generally experience long summer days and sleep hard at night before getting up and starting the day before it gets too hot.Between wheat harvest, planting of fall crops, irrigation chores, checking livestock and debris cleanup following summer storms, my two kids will always have a different summertime story compared to their classmates. There have been times I have questioned my decision to haul the kids to town every day for two weeks during our busiest time of the year. Scheduling swim lessons in the middle of winter would work better with our farming schedule. However, I have to remind myself they need to experience the joys of summer as children. Yes, they need to understand the value of work. Yes, they need to be given responsibilities. Yes, they need to see that being part of a farming family includes helping when needed.And honestly, leaving the farm and driving to town so the kids can get their guaranteed pool time also means that I have an opportunity to relax in the shade and read a book or listen to a podcast for 45 minutes by myself – something I might not do without this intentionally built-in time during the summer. Where’s Waldo? In&nbsp;Salina&nbsp;of course, celebrating its twelfth anniversary in July 2024. Find Waldo Local has become a beloved summertime event in communities nationwide. This year, Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association are again teaming up with 310 independent bookstores nationwide, including&nbsp;<a href="https://redfernbooksellers.com/">Red Fern Booksellers</a>,&nbsp;106 South Santa Fe Avenue, for some hide-and-seek fun designed to encourage residents to patronize their local businesses. There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts until July 27.

Families love joining the scavenger hunt to find the iconic children’s book character, with his red-and-white-striped shirt and black glasses, hidden in twenty-five local downtown businesses.&nbsp; Find Waldo Local is a wonderful way to support the Shop Local movement by increasing foot traffic to a variety of stores.

To join in the fun, people can simply pick up a “Find Waldo Local in&nbsp;Salina!” stamp card at Red Fern Booksellers. With each miniature Waldo they spot, searchers get their card stamped or signed by the participating shop. 

Eagle-eyed hunters can also look for Waldo’s special 2024 gold medal hidden in&nbsp;Red Fern Booksellers!&nbsp;Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to enter into a grand prize drawing for Waldo books and other prizes. All participants are welcome to attend the celebration party at&nbsp;Red Fern Booksellers&nbsp;on&nbsp;Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Red Fern in Salina invites public to downtown scavenger hunt

<a></a><a>&nbsp;</a><a>The rodeo that Jean Book has attended since she was a kid, is now helping her in a round-about way.</a>

When Book was diagnosed with cancer in 2019, she received help from the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund of Dickinson County. The fund, created in 1991, provides financial assistance to any Dickinson County resident undergoing cancer treatment.

The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo has partnered with the fund since 2008, through its Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign, asking fans to wear pink for one night of rodeo.

Book, a teacher, retired after 35 years in the profession. She spent most of her career in the Abilene and Chapman schools. Two years after retiring in 2017, she was diagnosed with colon cancer.

After six months of treatment, including twelve chemotherapy sessions, Book was free of cancer for two years. Then doctors found spots in her lungs in 2022, and she’s been doing chemotherapy treatments since then.

The cancer is slow growing, she has been told, and she will be taking chemo treatments the rest of her life.

“It wasn’t something on my radar for my retirement, but since it’s here, we deal with it, go about life, and enjoy it," Book said.

The Elsie Brooks Cancer Fund has provided financial help for Book in making the regular trips to the doctor in Manhattan. Growing up in Dickinson County, Book attended the rodeo as a youngster. Book's mom was a 4-H leader, and she and her siblings were involved with the fair and went to the rodeo.

When she married Glenn, they continued that tradition. They used to go to all four nights of rodeo, but now it’s just a couple shows.

Book and Glenn have a daughter, Sarah Stalder, and a son, Michael Ade, six granddaughters, and just a few months ago, were blessed with a little great-granddaughter.

Knowing she has cancer is daunting, but Book isn’t discouraged.

“You know who wins the battle in the end,” Book said. “Whatever God has planned is just fine.”

She is thankful for the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund.

“It’s really a gift to the community, to have an organization that is able to reach out and touch people. They reached out to me, and that meant a lot. I appreciate the fund and its contribution to the county," Book said.&nbsp;

The Abilene rodeo hosts its annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo on Thursday, August 1,&nbsp;partnering with the Elsie Brooks Fund to raise money through voluntary donations. In the past sixteen years, the rodeo has raised over $45,000 for the fund.

The Elsie Brooks Fund has assisted its clients more than 1,700 times. Rodeo tickets are available online at <a href="http://WildBillHickokRodeo.com">WildBillHickokRodeo.com</a>, West’s Country Mart, other area retailers, and at the gate.

Saline County Jail Bookings, July 9

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan.—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 9:30p.m. July 3, a Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a vehicle on 150th near U.S. Highway 75 for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The driver Kathy Lynn Jauch, 56, of Golden, Colorado, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff: Colo. woman was transporting meth in Kansas

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers reported to a residence in the 1200 block of Cloud Circle Saturday evening, where they met a woman with blood stains on her shirt and bloody nose — she reported that a man attacked her and threatened to kill her shortly before they arrived.

Just after 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, SPD officers reported to the residence on Cloud Circle after the 21-year-old woman called for help in the home.

"She indicated that while at the residence, she got into a disturbance with a Christian Lasso Olivas," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "Christian became upset with the female and began yelling at her. He then got on top of her and began strangling her. He kept telling her that he was going to kill her and her family."

Feldman said the victim was able to push the 20-year-old Lasso Olivas off of her, but he then dragged her into another room and pushed her onto the bed. There, he allegedly continued the verbal assault and began striking her in the face.

The victim reported that on the bed, Lasso Olivas began strangling the victim again and threatened to kill her and her family. 

"She [the victim] attempted to get away from him — he then put a pillow on top of her head and pushed her into the bed," Feldman said. "As she was bleeding, she was able to ask if she could clean up the blood, he said no. She tried to get away from him but was able to keep her in the room. She then was able to get away into the kitchen where she grabbed a knife to protect herself."

Lasso Olivas had possession of the victim's phone, so the victim demanded that he return the phone to her, which he refused. He allegedly threatened to kill her again if she called the police.

Feldman said Lasso Olivas then reached for the victim, and she slashed the knife on his hand, causing a small cut. This caused Lasso Olivas to drop the victim's phone, allowing her to call 9-1-1 for assistance. 

"Officers were able to take him into custody without incident," Feldman said.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Salina Regional Health Center to care for her injuries, but the cut on Lasso Olivas' hand did not require medical attention.

Officers then booked Lasso Olivas into the Saline County Jail. They requested charges for attempted voluntary manslaughter, three counts of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated kidnapping, criminal threat, domestic battery and criminal deprivation of property.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man is going to prison for a deadly crash that killed a passenger in his vehicle in 2023.

On July 1, 24-year-old Harry Rediker was sentenced to&nbsp;22 years in prison for the death of&nbsp;38-year-old Lindsey Garmon of Wellington as he fled a traffic stop and crashed.

Just before 5:30 a.m. January 28, 2023, deputies attempted to stop a Hyundia Elantra for alleged traffic infractions on Kellogg Drive, according to Sheriff's Lt. Nathan Gibbs. The driver of the vehicle&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20054606">Harry Rediker 22,</a>&nbsp;Wichita,&nbsp; failed to stop and fled from deputies.

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

In early February, 1858, Colonel William A. Phillips, Alexander M. Campbell, and James Muir, seeking a location for a townsite, explored the banks of the Smoky Hill River. They drove the stakes and found Salina in the immediate area.

Founders Park commemorates that event. Early settlers harnessed the power from the flowing Smoky Hill River, which soon ran mills that sawed trees into wood and ground grain into flour. Salina's milling industry was born and steadily grew to the third-largest flour-producing city in the world.

The millstone displayed in the park is believed to be the original stone from Phillips Mill, the first steam-powered grist mill in Salina, opened in May, 1861.

The founders motto for Salina is inscipted on a plaque located in the park it reads- "Religion first, Education second, Business third"

The original town of Saina founded in 1858 contained 320 acres. Boundaries were North to South &amp; Front to Ninth Streets. By 1902 this block included the Grand Central Hotel and Opera House.&nbsp;

In 1976 as part of the Bicentennial celebrations, 100 Salinans gathered at Founders Park for the entombment of a steel cylinder full of memorabilia from that time.

According to an article by John Schmiedeler from the Salina Journal in November 1976, provided by the Smoky Hill Museum. The Committee for the Tricentennial Celebration placed a message inside the capsule which reads:

"There is no way to capture and contain in this capsule the Spirit of '76 that has encompassed our national celebration. Ours has been a period of searching our past for the purpose of assuring our future. We have become acutely concious of the consumption of all of the natural resources, land, water, air, forest, and minerals, and we have tried to sound an alarm to halt abuses. We have examined the tents of democracy and the role of the United States in world affairs. We believe that our forefathers had a great idea that this system of government can work."

Among the items found in the time capsule, which will be unearthed in 2076, are an automobile license tag, a description of the newly revitalized Saline County Historical Society, lodge pins by the handful, school year books, theatre programs, pictures galore, tapes of radio broadcasts, advertisement gimmicks among other items.&nbsp;
