Sadie Kaylynn Nelson, 13 months old, of McPherson, passed away at 7:50 p.m., Friday, November 26, 2021 at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. Sadie was born in McPherson, Kansas on October 2, 2020, a daughter of Jamie Nichole (McVicker) and Timothy Daniel Nelson, of McPherson, Kansas. Sadie liked listening to music, being held, getting her hands on anything she could, meeting everyone and had an infectious smile. She attended Free Methodist Church, McPherson, Kansas. She was dedicated by Dr. David Kessler in December of 2020. BOSTON (AP) — Phil Saviano, a clergy sex abuse survivor and whistleblower who played a pivotal role in exposing decades of predatory assaults by Roman Catholic priests in the United States, has died. He was 69.

Saviano’s story figured prominently in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bce4d6f901b2423ea23a713dc31c49da">the 2015 Oscar-winning film “Spotlight”</a>&nbsp;about The Boston Globe’s investigation that revealed how scores of priests molested children and got away with it because church leaders covered it up. He died on Sunday after a battle with gallbladder cancer, said his brother and caregiver, Jim Saviano.

In late October, Phil Saviano announced <a href="https://www.facebook.com/phil.saviano">on his Facebook page</a> that he was starting hospice care at his brother’s home in Douglas, Massachusetts, where he died.

“Things have been dicey the last few weeks,” he wrote, asking followers to “give a listen to Judy Collins singing ‘Bird On A Wire’ and think of me.”

Saviano played a central role in illuminating the scandal, which led to the resignation of Boston’s Cardinal Bernard Law and church settlements with hundreds of victims. The Globe’s 2002 series earned it the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2003, and “Spotlight” won Academy Awards for best picture and best original screenplay. Actor Neal Huff played Saviano in the film.

“My gift to the world was not being afraid to speak out,” Saviano said in mid-November in a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Born June 23, 1952, Saviano recalled going to confession as a young boy at St. Denis Church in tiny East Douglas, Massachusetts, in the 1960s and whispering his transgressions through a screen to the Rev. David Holley. The priest, he said,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d62e914879e92c043a7ac3a595089add">violated that sacred trust</a>&nbsp;and forced the 11-year-old to perform sex acts. Holley died in a New Mexico prison in 2008 while serving a 275-year sentence for molesting eight boys.

“When we were kids, the priests never did anything wrong. You didn’t question them, same as the police,” brother Jim Saviano told the AP. “There were many barriers put in his way intentionally and otherwise by institutions and generational thinking. That didn’t stop him. That’s a certain kind of bravery that was unique.”

A self-described “recovering Catholic,” Saviano went on to establish the New England chapter of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, an organization working to bring specific allegations of clergy sexual abuse to light.

His faith in the church shattered, Saviano instead leaned on politicians and prosecutors to bring offenders to justice.

“We’re putting our faith in legislators and prosecutors to solve this problem,” he told reporters in 2002.

“Phil was an essential source during the Spotlight Team’s reporting on the cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, providing other critical sources, research materials and the names of several accused priests,” said Mike Rezendes, a member of the Globe team that brought the scandal to light and a current AP investigative reporter.

“He also shared his own heartbreaking story of abuse, imbuing us with the iron determination we needed to break this horrific story,” Rezendes said. “During our reporting, and over the last 20 years, I got to know Phil well and have never met anyone as brave, as compassionate or as savvy.”

Saviano earned degrees in zoology and communications from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Boston University and began working in hospital public relations. Later, he shifted to entertainment industry publicity and concert promotion, working closely with Collins, a lifelong friend and confidante, as well as Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme and other artists.

In 1991, he became seriously ill with AIDS and went public with his childhood abuse the following year, becoming one of the first survivors to come forward.

“Father Holley forced me and two of my friends to have repeated sexual contact with him,” Saviano said in an interview with the Globe — the first of many that would lead not only to criminal charges against the disgraced cleric but widespread prosecutions of others as the enormity of the scandal became evident.

By the early 2000s, Saviano was spending 10 hours a day on the phone with victims and journalists. He was an outspoken critic of the Vatican’s reluctance to deal decisively with the fallout from the scandal. In 2008, when Pope Benedict XVI hinted to U.S. bishops during a visit that they’d mishandled the church’s response, Saviano questioned the pontiff’s decision to follow his remarks with Masses in New York and Washington.

“If he was really serious about the issue, that Mass would not be held in New York. It would be held here in Boston,” he said.

In 2009, suffering kidney failure and unable to locate a match among family or friends, he found a donor after SNAP spread the word in a nationwide email to 8,000 clergy sex abuse survivors.

The abuse that came to light as a result of Saviano’s work prompted Cardinal Law, Boston’s highest-ranking churchman, to step down. The Globe’s reporting showed Law was aware of child molesters in the priesthood but covered up their crimes and failed to stop them, instead transferring them from parish to parish without alerting parents or police.

When the archbishop died in Rome in 2017, Saviano asked bluntly: “How is he going to explain this when he comes face to face with his maker?”

In 2019, at the Vatican for an abuse prevention summit called convened by Pope Francis,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pope-francis-ap-top-news-international-news-united-states-latin-america-34df3ee878694c229c55bf1a5de533af">Saviano said he told summit organizers to release the names of abusive priests around the world along with their case files</a>.

“Do it to launch a new era of transparency. Do it to break the code of silence. Do it out of respect for the victims of these men, and do it to help prevent these creeps from abusing any more children,” he said.

Although there was a hard edge to much of his life, Saviano enjoyed traveling extensively and developed a soft spot for Indigenous art. In 1999, he launched an e-commerce website, Viva Oaxaca Folk Art, showcasing handmade decorative pieces he purchased on trips to southern Mexico and resold to collectors across the U.S.

He is survived by three brothers, Jim Saviano of Douglas; John Saviano of Douglas; and Victor Saviano of Boston; two nieces; and two nephews. A funeral Mass was scheduled for Friday at St. Denis Church in East Douglas.

When the Jobs for America’s Graduates – Kansas (JAG-K) program at Salina South High School needed a new Career Specialist last summer, an interesting candidate stepped up to the plate.

Who better to understand the impact JAG-K can have on students than a former participant in the program? And who better to catch Salina South students in need of help than a former star catcher on the school’s softball team?

The evidence-based program helps students prepare for post-secondary education and employment opportunities. JAG-K programs across the state, serving approximately 4,000 students, reported a graduation rate of 97 percent for the Class of 2020.

Paige Parker, a 2016 graduate of Salina South, was hired in July to assume the leadership of the JAG-K program when former Career Specialist Melissa Gates became the new business teacher at the school.

“Mrs. Gates called me in April and said ‘I’ve got the perfect opportunity for you!’” Parker said. “This is right in line with my talents and what I am passionate about. I’ve always wanted to help people, and this allows me to do that.”

Gates wanted to help find a replacement who would be qualified and passionate about helping students.

“After being the Career Specialist here for the past six years, I knew Ms. Parker would be the perfect person to provide a smooth transition for our students,” Gates said. “Her experience as a JAG student has allowed her to make a difference in the lives of her students.

A Career Specialist is the teacher who provides individual and group instruction to the JAG-K participants in the classroom using the competency-based JAG National Curriculum.

“As a new specialist, Ms. Parker has done an amazing job building relationships and making connections with her students. There is no doubt that she has a passion for helping young people. I have enjoyed watching her learn and grow into the young professional that she has become.”

Parker said that while in high school, she dealt with chronic migraine headaches and was impacted by deaths to relatives.

“I did not thrive in school. I dealt with a lot of depression,” Parker recalled. “I was on truancy all four years,” I was a passing student, but I missed tons of assignments. I lacked motivation and struggled to be able to focus my attention on school.

“I struggled to feel like I fit in a group when I was in high school. But JAG-K gave me that group where I could connect with my peers. When I came into the JAG-K classroom, I knew that that was my safe space. No matter what type of day I was having, I could count on everyone in there to help me get better.”

Despite her struggles, Parker managed to not just stay eligible for sports, but to stand out on the softball diamond and the volleyball court.

“I kept a good line of communication with my teachers and coaches, letting them know that I was trying and doing the best I knew how to manage my migraines,” Parker said. “Opening up that line of communication let them know what I was dealing with and that I would catch up on my schoolwork as soon as I could.

“Having learned how to dialogue and advocate for myself in high school, I really continued that in college. By communicating with my professors, they understood ‘She really cares. She will work hard.’”

Parker played softball at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., where she majored in Health and Wellness. She is now working to pass on some of the skills she learned through experience.

“I try to teach the students to advocate for themselves and communicate effectively,” Parker said. “That may be emailing their teachers, working ahead, getting work made up. I’m showing them how to stay connected when they are struggling.”

Parker said she senses a ‘silent cry for mental-health help’ at Salina South, an issue exacerbated by the pandemic.

“I’m really working on helping students to recognize their emotions and to tap into healthy coping mechanisms,” Parker said. “I want to give these students the things that I wish I’d had at their age. How to process their emotions, and that it’s ok to have emotions. How to feel comfortable with who they are. How to be themselves and utilize their gifts and talents.”

Parker knows that having walked in their shoes, she can help current Salina South students.

“It’s great because I already know what to expect,” Parker said. “I saw a great example in Mrs. Gates, and I carry the things she taught me into my teaching. I know the benefits JAG can have for my students. I understand how important it is just to listen to my students and let them feel heard, because I didn't feel like I was heard as a student.”

JAG-K is a multi-year, in-school program for students in grades 7-12 that offers tools to successfully transition students into post-secondary school, the military, or directly into the workforce with marketable skills. Participants in the program face multiple barriers to success that their JAG-K Career Specialist helps them overcome through a nationally-accredited, evidence-based model.

We’re doing our best to stick to our cash Christmas budget this year. Are there any traps to avoid, and do you have other advice on ways we can cut costs during the holiday season?

If you’re getting out of debt, the phrase “extra money” probably isn’t even in your vocabulary. Regardless, stores will do everything they can to convince you to toss a couple of extra items into your cart when Christmas rolls around. Their festive marketing is&nbsp;everywhere, and most of it tries to get you to spend extra on things you don’t need or can’t afford.

It might be Christmas, but that doesn’t mean you need to buy a bunch of high-end electronic gadgets for everyone. Any way you slice it, electronics add up to be way more than most people want to spend. Try focusing on more personal—and less expensive—gifts that will be truly meaningful to the ones receiving them.

Set a reasonable&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/guide-to-budgeting" target="_blank">budget</a>, determine what’s fair for each person and stick to it.&nbsp;Be sure you’re following realistic gift guidelines&nbsp;before&nbsp;you go out shopping. If you have kids, don’t let their Christmas lists dictate how much you spend. Your budget should do that. Look out for sneaky buys that drain your wallet, too. Some people spend as much on stocking stuffers as they do regular gifts under the tree.

Whether you’re shopping online or out and about, remember that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/5-christmas-extras" target="_blank">extended warranties</a>&nbsp;are&nbsp;not&nbsp;a good deal. But there’s a good chance you’ll still be paying off this year’s Christmas&nbsp;next&nbsp;December.

If gift wrapping at the store is complementary, go for it. If not, just do it yourself. Sure, it takes a little time and effort, but you’ll save a ton of money buying a few rolls of wrapping paper at the local dollar store. Don’t wait until December 20th&nbsp;to order your Christmas&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/the-costly-christmas-mistake" target="_blank">presents</a>, either. Plan ahead — like&nbsp;right&nbsp;now&nbsp;— so you don’t have to worry&nbsp;about expensive overnight shipping rates.

Finally, I know many folks want to send Christmas cards to&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;they know&nbsp;every&nbsp;year. Some people go completely over-the-top, with their family (including the dog and cat) dressed to the nines and a photo taken by a professional photographer. Come on! KANSAS CITY, Mo. - John Sherman is an entrepreneur, civic leader, philanthropist, third owner of the Kansas City Royals, and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s 2021 Kansas Citian of the Year.&nbsp;

The award announcement came tonight at the climax of the Chamber’s 134th&nbsp;Annual Dinner meeting, the most prestigious event of the Kansas City business community.&nbsp;

Sherman built two incredibly successful companies within the space of ten years.&nbsp; His first startup was LPG Services Group, founded in 1991. It grew rapidly, merging with Dynergy in 1996. That same year, Sherman founded Inergy L.P.&nbsp; The company went public in 2001, merged with Crestwood Holdings in 2013. A propane supplier, it’s now an industry leader in natural gas storage and transportation worth $6-billion.&nbsp;

Sherman has been named an Ernst &amp; Young Entrepreneur of the Year and, along with Ewing Kauffman and Lamar Hunt, was among the first class of men and women chosen for UMKC’s Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The list of civic organizations Sherman’s been involved in is a long one, and includes the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, Teach for America, the Ewing M. Kauffman Foundation, UMKC Foundation, Truman Presidential Library, and World War I Museum.&nbsp;

He and his wife Marny founded the Sherman Family Foundation in 2006.&nbsp; The foundation is a strong supporter of education, particularly urban education, including providing the startup costs for UMKC’s Urban Education Research Center.&nbsp; His philanthropy, he says, is centered around the underserved segments of the Kansas City Community.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Outgoing Chair Carolyn Watley, who served an unusual two years as Chair because of the pandemic, spoke about the hard work of working together to create a Kansas City for all. “Working together often starts with conversations where we share different perspectives and we listen,” she said. “We know that solutions require cooperation and putting personal interests aside. The KC Chamber values our differences, as we create the forum where we can work together and make forward progress for all.”

Keynote speakers for the Annual Dinner were Davyeon Ross, local entrepreneur and founder of ShotTracker; entertainer Kalen Allen of Kansas City, Kansas, best known for his regular appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres show; and singer Casi Joy.&nbsp;

The Annual Dinner was in a hybrid format, with a virtual as well as in-person format.&nbsp; In-person seating was reduced this year for social distancing purposes, and all attendees were required to be vaccinated.

Diane Calcagno-Fallis passed peacefully on November 5, 2021, after a hard battle with brain cancer at the age of 60. Her devoted husband of 24 years, Douglas, was by her side. Diane was born on January 2, 1961, in Summit, NJ, the second of three daughters to Charles M. Calcagno and Marion (Borgese) Calcagno. Diane lived her early childhood years in Kenilworth before the family relocated to Berkeley Heights, NJ. After graduating from Governor Livingston high school in 1979, she continued her education studying legal administration. Diane began her professional career at Lane M Ferdinand law firm in Springfield, NJ. After relocating to southern California, she continued to work as a legal administrato, joining Snell &amp; Wilmer law firm in Irvine, CA. Diane met Douglas, and they married in October 1997, settling in Irvine. Daniel, their son, was born in September 1998. In 2006, the family relocated to McPherson, Kansas, Douglas’ hometown.

After arriving in Kansas, Diane took a position in advertising at the McPherson Sentinel, the local newspaper. After five years with the paper, through business contacts, Diane came upon what she considered to be her “dream job” working at the McPherson Opera House Company. She eventually became executive director of the opera house. Through these jobs, Diane made many lasting friendships. Diane had the support of many friends through the social activities she engaged in while in McPherson. Her dear Bunco Babes and her yearly trips with her three Cali co-workers were a big part of her life. One of her proudest moments was seeing her son Daniel graduate from Kansas State University in May 2021. She looked forward to annual trips to Ocean Beach III in N.J. to visit the Jersey shore. Diane loved the beach and collecting shells on the east coast and the west coast. Diane will be remembered as caring and compassionate. She would always listen and give support to anyone who talked with her. Diane's commitment and determination in life is a lasting inspiration and a shining light for all who knew her. Diane is survived by her husband Douglas, her son Daniel, her mother Marion Calcagno, her sisters Karen (Tom Ryan) Hodshon and Arlene (Tim) Lasecla, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her mother-in-law Joan Fallis, brother-in-law David (Sindie) Fallis, and sister-in-law Beth (Tom) Robinson.

TOPEKA — Kansas legislative staff
 released details Wednesday about how to participate in upcoming public 
meetings on redistricting.

Lawmakers are gathering input before redrawing congressional and 
legislative boundaries in the upcoming session, and plan to listen by 
live video feeds to public comments from four virtual town halls.

GOP leaders previously announced they would hold the virtual town 
halls in response to criticism about the first round of public meetings 
in August. Those meetings were announced on short notice, and held 
during working hours at a time when census data had yet to be released.

The information about where to go and how to submit comments for the 
new round of meetings arrives less than a week before the first town 
hall, which will coincide with an unrelated special legislative session.

To participate in the upcoming meetings, residents must call or email
 the Kansas Legislative Research Department at 785-296-3181 or redistricting@klrd.ks.gov
 at least 24 hours in advance. Written testimony will be accepted at the
 same email address up until the start of the 2022 session in January.

The meetings will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with public comment at the following locations.

Location, other details for Kansas redistricting town hall meetings

WASHINGTON —A jury acquitted Kyle Rittenhouse of all charges Friday after he pleaded self-defense in the deadly Kenosha, Wisconsin, shootings that became a flashpoint in the nation’s debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice. 

The jury came back with its verdict after close to 3 1/2 days of deliberation.

President Biden issued a statement on the jury's decision.

"While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, myself included, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken.&nbsp;I ran on a promise to bring Americans together, because I believe that what unites us is far greater than what divides us.&nbsp; I know that we’re not going to heal our country’s wounds overnight, but I remain steadfast in my commitment to do everything in my power to ensure that every American is treated equally, with fairness and dignity, under the law. I urge everyone to express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law.&nbsp; Violence and destruction of property have no place in our democracy.&nbsp; The White House and Federal authorities have been in contact with Governor Evers’s&nbsp;office to prepare for any outcome in this case, and I have spoken with&nbsp;the Governor this afternoon and offered support and any assistance needed to ensure public safety."

Pres. Biden's statement on the Rittenhouse not guilty verdict

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted of all charges Friday after pleading self-defense in the deadly Kenosha shootings that became a flashpoint in the nation’s debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice.

Rittenhouse, 18, cried and hugged one of his attorneys upon hearing the verdict.

He had been charged with homicide, attempted homicide and reckless endangering after killing two men and wounding a third with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle during a tumultuous night of protests over police violence against Black people in the summer of 2020. The former police youth cadet is white, as were those he shot.

The jury, which appeared to be overwhelmingly white, deliberated for close to 3 1/2 days.

Rittenhouse could have gotten life in prison if found guilty on the most serious charge, first-degree intentional homicide, or what some other states call first-degree murder.

As the verdict drew near, Gov. Tony Evers pleaded for calm and said 500 National Guard members would be ready for duty in Kenosha if needed.

Rittenhouse was 17 when he went from his home in Antioch, Illinois, to Kenosha after businesses in the city were ransacked and burned over the shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake, by a white police officer.

Carrying a weapon that authorities said was illegally purchased for the underage Rittenhouse, he joined other armed citizens in what he said was an effort to protect property and provide medical aid.

Bystander and drone video captured most of the frenzied chain of events that followed: Rittenhouse killed Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, then shot to death protester Anthony Huber, 26, and wounded demonstrator Gaige Grosskreutz, now 28.

Prosecutors portrayed Rittenhouse as a “wannabe soldier” who had gone looking for trouble that night and was responsible for creating a dangerous situation in the first place by pointing his rifle at demonstrators.

But Rittenhouse testified: “I didn’t do anything wrong. I defended myself.”

Breaking into sobs at one point, he told the jury he opened fire after Rosenbaum chased him and made a grab for his gun. He said he was afraid his rifle was going to be wrested away and used to kill him.

Huber was then killed after hitting Rittenhouse in the head or neck with a skateboard, and Grosskreutz was shot after pointing a gun of his own at Rittenhouse.

The case was part of an extraordinary confluence of trials that reflected the deep divide over race in the United States: In Georgia, three white men are on trial in the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, while in Virginia, a trial is underway in a lawsuit over the deadly white-supremacist rally held in Charlottesville in 2017.

The exact racial makeup of the Rittenhouse jury wasn’t clear because jurors were not asked about their race in court.

The bloodshed in Kenosha took place during a summer of sometimes-violent protests set off across the U.S. by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other cases involving the police use of force against Black people.

While some Americans condemned Rittenhouse as a vigilante, some on the right hailed him as a hero who exercised his Second Amendment gun rights and tried to put a stop to lawlessness.

Then-President Donald Trump said it appeared Rittenhouse had been “very violently attacked.” Supporters donated more than $2 million toward his legal defense.

Rittenhouse had also been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, a misdemeanor that had appeared likely to lead to a conviction. But Judge Bruce Schroeder threw out that charge before jury deliberations after the defense argued that the Wisconsin law did not apply to the long-barreled rifle used by Rittenhouse.

Schroeder’s handling of the trial drew attention at several points, including when he led the applause for military veterans on Veterans Day just before a defense witness who had been in the Army was about to take the stand. The judge also let Rittenhouse himself draw juror numbers from a raffle drum to set the final 12 who deliberated.

Video and testimony from some of the prosecution’s own witnesses seemed to buttress Rittenhouse’s claim of self-defense.

Witnesses described Rosenbaum as “hyperaggressive” and said that he dared others to shoot him and threatened to kill Rittenhouse earlier that night. A videographer testified Rosenbaum lunged for the rifle just before he was shot, and a pathologist said his injuries appeared to indicate his hand was over the barrel.

Also, Rosenbaum’s fiancee disclosed that he was on medication for bipolar disorder and depression. Rittenhouse’s lawyers branded Rosenbaum a “crazy person.”

Some civil rights activists saw a racial double standard in the way the white gunman was treated.

On the night of the shootings, law enforcement officers saw Rittenhouse and other armed people on the streets despite a curfew and gave them bottles of water, with one officer heard saying over a loudspeaker, “We appreciate you guys.”

Later, amid the tumult, Rittenhouse managed to get past a police line with his weapon slung over his shoulder and was not arrested that night.

My husband recently approached me with an idea for our money. He wants us to set up an account where we both put 10 percent of our income for discretionary spending. Let’s look at this from another angle. There are lots of families where only one person works outside the home and generates an income. Would it be fair, then, to say only the person making money is allowed a little cash to spend for fun once in a while? Of course, not.

When two people are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/relationships/the-truth-about-money-and-relationships" target="_blank">married</a>, they are pronounced “as one.” That means even if you only have one person with an income, it becomes&nbsp;our&nbsp;income. If you have kids, they become&nbsp;our&nbsp;kids. See where I’m going with this? Marriage is not a&nbsp;me&nbsp;thing, it’s a&nbsp;we&nbsp;thing. Always.

When it comes to paying off credit cards and getting out of debt, I’ve heard you talk about cutting up the cards and closing the accounts. Should I pay off the balances before or after I close the accounts?

I like the idea of cutting up the cards and closing the accounts first. Sometimes credit card companies will respond to this by jacking up the interest rates, or doing other shady things, but the point is to get them out of your life as quickly as possible and stop using the stupid things. Personal finance is 80 percent behavior. Ridding yourself of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/how-credit-cards-work" target="_blank">credit cards</a>, and getting credit card debt out of your life for good, is a great first step in learning to behave with your money. You don’t build wealth&nbsp;or&nbsp;save money by using credit cards, no matter what anyone says. If you’re naïve enough to think you’re going to play around with a multi-billion-dollar industry and beat them at their own game, you’re sadly mistaken.

The only way to win against credit card companies is by refusing to play their game!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—for buying gifts. And while you’re at it, you might as well buy something for yourself, right? We’ve all been there. Remember in&nbsp;Friends&nbsp;when Monica bought those super expensive leather boots on impulse? She ended up regretting it because they really hurt her feet. Womp, womp!

Listen, we all spend money in a variety of ways. We just need to keep our spending motivations in check—especially&nbsp;during this time of year.

So, if you find yourself indulging in some retail therapy—buying stuff to make you feel good—then I want to help. Retail therapy is normal in today’s society, but&nbsp;normal&nbsp;can make you broke pretty quick. And there’s nothing merry about that.

We all need to stay in control of our money, especially during the holiday season. So, here are four simple ideas to help you shop responsibly and avoid falling into the retail therapy trap:

A budget gives you&nbsp;permission to spend. When shopping for holiday gifts, I always need to stop and remember that every item I buy for myself is a gift someone could have bought&nbsp;for&nbsp;me, instead of me buying it for myself. If you have $100 budgeted to buy gifts for everyone on your Christmas list, make sure to actually use all of it for gifts for others—not for yourself!

When shopping for others, it’s completely normal to find things you love for yourself. Window shopping can actually give your brain a surge of dopamine, which may be all you need to scratch that retail therapy itch. If you find a fantastic outfit or gorgeous accessory, add it to an online shopping cart, put it on a wish list, or even ask a store to hold the item in your name. Share your list with family and friends, and give them the opportunity to buy you the perfect gift!

I can tell you from experience: It’s almost impossible to be satisfied with your own life if you’re constantly looking at what someone else has. Social media may be a trigger you need to put on pause for a few weeks. And if you know that certain stores trigger your retail therapy feelings, do your best to avoid them. Wait until after the holidays when your budget has some room for personal purchases.

Giving is the most fun you can have with money—really! And the holiday season is the perfect time to practice generosity by giving to others. There are plenty of opportunities to give to charities, buy toys for underprivileged children, or provide groceries for families in need.
