Beginning this weekend, phones will be ringing across the Salina Unified School District 305 as a comprehensive survey of patron opinion will begin.

School district officials say the survey will provide insight into what residents think about the district’s strengths, challenges, and other important issues.

“This survey will give us an outstanding opportunity to hear from a cross-section of our patrons. We are interested in their opinions about our performance, and what they think about a variety of issues,” said Linn Exline, superintendent. “We’ll hear from all geographic parts of the district, people of different ages, and everyone from newcomers to long-term residents.”

The phone survey was designed by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm that has worked with school districts across the Midwest.

The calling will be done by Market Research Associates, a Kansas City firm, which uses only professional researchers. Participants will be selected totally at random, and all responses will be kept completely confidential.

In general, calls will be placed between 7 and 9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The caller ID may show “Market Research Associates,” or it may simply show an 816 or 913 area code, because the company uses calling facilities in both Missouri and Kansas.

For those who are not contacted at random on the phone, an online version of the survey will be available on the district’s website.

The survey process will take about two weeks to complete, and the district is asking patrons to listen for their phones to ring.

“We are very fortunate to live and serve in a community that values our schools,” Exline said. “If you get called for the survey, please answer and give your honest feedback.”

K-State cattle experts offer tips on how to make this choice

When making a big life decision, many people turn to making a pros and cons list to help them logically work through the process.

In agriculture, that often leads to creating a spreadsheet to calculate costs, depreciation and potential for a return on the investment, say cattle experts at Kansas State University.

One of the decisions that many cow-calf producers face at fall weaning is determining which heifers to keep and which ones to sell. This was the topic of a&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2023/09/08/replacement-heifers-feeding-soybean-hay-what-is-compounding/" target="_blank">recent Cattle Chat podcast</a>, produced through the Beef Cattle Institute at K-State.

“Every operation is going to be a little different, but when deciding whether to keep or sell replacement heifers, producers need to assess if they have the labor and resources available to raise them,” said Dustin Pendell, K-State agricultural economist.

Along with that, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers said the current market price is also a factor worth considering.

“Calf prices are high right now and so that makes the opportunity cost really high,” Lubbers said. “If you are thinking about contracting the herd a little bit, now might be a good time to sell a few extra calves.”

For those who prefer to raise their replacement heifers, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said he prioritizes keeping heifers that give him the best odds of success.

“The best bet heifers that have the highest likelihood of being a long-term cow are ones that were born early in the calving season to a dam that has a good disposition and high genetic quality and are daughters of a quality sire,” Larson said. “I need her to be born early because she will be the most likely to get pregnant early and stay in the herd a long time.”

Even if the heifer meets the genetic and temperament criteria, Larson said if she was born late in the calving season she falls to his sell-list.

When thinking about resources, the experts agree that it is important to think about the amount of weight the heifers need to gain between weaning and breeding.

“Depending on the mature size of the cowherd, most heifers will need to gain 300 pounds between weaning and breeding,” said K-State beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster.

He recommends producers calculate the expected daily gain and compare that to what feed resources are available.

“In some parts of the country, there aren’t ample feed supplies to carry cattle through the winter. In that case, producers may need to sell the heifers and look to buy bred heifers and cows in the spring and summer after this time of limited feed resources has passed,” Lancaster said.

K-State veterinarian Brad White encouraged producers to start thinking now about their management plan for the fall.

“You need to pencil it out because keeping this year’s heifers is going to make them be more expensive cows as compared to other years,” White said. “Producers need to dive into the spreadsheets now to calculate the right number of heifers to keep before running the cattle through the chutes at weaning.”

Cattle Chat: Deciding to keep or sell heifers

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann said at the Kansas State Fair over the weekend, even though the federal fiscal year ends at the end of the month, the Farm Bill is not done.

"I'm frustrated with how slowly it's going," Mann said. "That said, I think we are making progress. I think the committee's done a good job listening to producers. We're working our tail off to make sure that this is a Farm Bill that works for our Kansas ag producers, which is the most important thing."

U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall used an analogy from his days in obstetric practice.

"This is my second farm bill," Marshall said. "I know a little bit more about obstetrics than I do a farm bill, as a matter of fact, I saw two kids I delivered over in the sheep showing program, as well. If the farm bill was a pregnant mom, I'd say, we're a week overdue and it's time to induce her."

Marshall would rather see the farm bill finished than just an extension, but an extension is what appears most likely at this point in the process.

"As agriculture goes, so goes Kansas," Marshall said. "What a farm bill does is give us a great amount of certainty. It allows our producers to make a five year plan, rather than a one year plan. When you're an ag lender, it helps you understand, are we going to be able to make this payment year three, year four, year five, as well. I think that's the struggle before us. I think the biggest impediment to getting a farm bill done is our $33 trillion national debt. This country is spending $700 billion on interest."

The other problem is that in an inflationary economy, more people in poverty need to use the food programs that are actually now the majority of the funds disbursed within a farm bill and the underlying food costs more.

"In 2018, we budgeted, we'd be spending $65 billion for food stamps, for the nutrition programs, $65 billion. The last two years, we're spending $180 billion a year, almost triple. We could dive down to why that's happening, but nevertheless, we've went from $65 billion to $180 billion and as we look at a budget for this farm bill, they are saying it's going to go down to $120 billion. It's hard for me, as a former business owner, to square all that."

It's likely that full language for the farm bill won't even be finalized to be hashed over until at least November.

Kan. First District Congressman talks farm bill at the State Fair

OPENING STATEMENT: “I really don’t have anything to tell you on the injuries other than (Travis) Trav (Kelce) is getting better. He’s progressing. We’ll see how he does the rest of today and tomorrow and then we’ll go from there. As far as Chris (Jones), updates on Chris; I really don’t have much of an update for you there. There is communication going on, however, and that’s a plus. (General Manager) Brett (Veach) is taking care of that. As far as the game goes – listen there was some good things, there was some things we obviously need to work on. We’ll get the receiving things taken care of. I feel good about the receivers that we have that was just a – we’re not normally guys that drop the ball, but we did, that’s reality. We’ve got to fix that. I think we still have some talent there that they’ll just keep improving there the more they play. I’ve seen what they can do before, so I’m figuring we’ll get that worked out. Defensively, there were some good things, there were some real positives, the third-and-12 got us, but there were some positive things in there again that we can work on and there’s some things that we need to clean up. I thought the effort was there. I thought that was good. I thought for the most part the plan was good on both sides, and then the special teams part of it – we had worked real hard on all these different fakes, and they got us. I mean they got us in a position there where they needed a couple yards, and they were able to get that. The penalty before that that gave them just two yards to go wasn’t good. With that, time’s yours.”

Q: How do you explain the struggles of Kadarius Toney in the game on Thursday?

REID: “You know what I would probably take the blame on that – when I said that after the game, I meant that. Listen, he missed all of training camp from honestly the first punt return pre practice on through, so he literally had no training camp until just the last few days when he got back here – and we measured that, we didn’t give him a lot. With that, I thought him getting in the game was important. To be fair, I’ve got to look in the mirror on that one. I probably didn’t put him in the best position there because he doesn’t drop the ball, that’s just not his deal. He’s a very secure catcher. I think that the only way we’re going to get him back is playing him. I think this week will be different than the last week. But I thought it was important that he got in the game, got caught up on the speed, but I probably put him in bad positions – primary position there especially later in the game – he’s still getting his legs back and all that.”

Q: Are there things you need to do with Kadarius Toney to get him back on track?

REID: “Listen he’s had some time here now to keep working, which I think will benefit him. Getting in that game I thought was an important thing – I mean that part was important, putting him in the positions I did, I probably shouldn’t have done that. I think you’ll see better as we go down the road here from him.”

Q: Is the goal to have a couple top receivers separate as the main guys or just have everyone rotate through?

REID: “We’ve got the three guys that have been here and then ended up doing probably the best in the game. And then we’ve got three younger guys we’ve got to bring along, and then you’ve got (Richie) James

who has been in a form of this and then is really tied into the special teams too. I think those three younger guys whether it’s four (Rashee Rice), eight (Justyn Ross), 19 (Kadarius Toney), they’re all kind of new in this and learning in games. As much as we think Kadarius is a seasoned veteran, he hasn’t really played a lot. I think you’ll see growth from them as we go. We’ll just see how that continues to work. Eventually you’d love them all to be where we want them, and then if they separate, they separate, however that works, works. I can’t predict that part.”

Q: How did you analyze the overall wide receiver performances?

REID: “I think the route part was good, I just think that we got – for the most part there were a couple that we got to work on. You guys that asked me about the crossing route, we kind of goofed that up, but we can fix that part. We’ve all got to do better, that’s the thing I took out of this. Whether its coaching, whether it’s playing, whether it’s the O-line, D-line. We can all take something out of this game and get better at it. I didn’t think all the way around. There were spurts of good, and then there were spurts of not so good. And then we were right in the position to go win the game and normally we do that. We didn’t do that, but normally we take advantage of those situations and defense had a big play on the batted ball and then we had a couple – we had a holding penalty; we had a drop there down the stretch that would have put us right in position to finish it off. I’ve told you guys this before and I tell the team this all the time and I tell myself this all the time, there’s a small margin between winning and losing in this thing but you have to take care of business when you put yourself through four quarters and a position to go get it then you take care of business and finish it.”

Q: During the game, how did the connection between you and Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy feel?

REID: “Yeah, we had great communication, I mean, that’s how we go about it. It was just as if EB (former Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy) were there. It’s the same type of communication that we had during the game. I thought that part was relatively smooth. I didn’t have a problem with the way that went.”

Q: Do you feel like you have to talk to Kadarius Toney to get a better understanding of where he’s at and what went wrong?

REID: "Normally the player knows probably better than anybody. I have talked to him a couple different times; we just need to keep going through the process here. You’ve got to keep playing and the more he plays – that’s just not his thing. He’s not a guy that drops balls. He’s got great hands. We just have to keep working through it.”

Q: Last night Kadarius Toney posted some things about the Giants, how do you deal with social media controversy?

REID: "Yeah, to be honest with you I didn’t know that. You’re saying recently I presume. I didn’t know that. If it is a problem, then I will obviously talk to the person about it.”

Q: Jawaan Taylor has a quick first step. How does a tackle develop that as far as getting on the quarterback’s cadence and being able to get that first quick step on the outside?

REID: “Yeah, so, he works on that hard, he gets pretty close at times and sometimes too fast. We just got – we have to make sure it’s not too fast because then that hurts the team. He takes a lot of pride in that and works very hard at that. Try to make sure that he gets off well and you know you watch the rest of

the games this weekend, that’s what these defensive ends, the way they can roll that helps you get into position a tick quicker – but you don’t want to be offsides that’s for sure.”

Q: What do you tell the tackles about where they can line up?

REID: “Normally, you’re able to split the center’s hip there. The guys – you don’t want it to be a tell when you’re running or passing, you also have the officials there, they will normally help you out with that if you are too deep. They’ll give you a warning and you go with it. They do a good job with that, I think. The guys are trying to get every advantage they can. This has been a life – since the passing game has come into fruition, that’s been one of the things tackles do. I mean, that’s been around for a long time and then you just have to make sure that you don’t take advantage of it and get yourself either too deep or leave off the snap too quick.”

Q: How did you feel about the run and blocking in this first game do you think it’s something that can get better week to week?

REID: “We can always do better, and we need to, we need to do better there. So, we’ll get that taken care of. That’s a good group up front there, so we have to clean up some things too.”

Q: You guys have struggled with short yardage, what lead to some of those plays breaking down?

REID: “Yeah, we’ve been practicing it. You know, they got us from inside and so normally if there is going to be a breakdown, you’re thinking off the edge or something but definitely not inside. You want to have the guy to be able to dart on the inside if he needs to and whether it’s the B gap or the C gap, but you know, we just over set that thing too far. You can’t do that.”

Q: Would you consider putting Blaine Gabbert in for short yardage plays?

REID: “I’ll tell you what’s crazy, when you play these Thursday games, you get to see all these other games and the QB sneaks didn’t look too good yesterday, honestly. We’ll go back and we’re going to figure it out here, I mean that’s what we do. We (will) try to make sure we get this covered, but we have to do better. I mean we just have to do better. We’ve got to take care of it.”

Q: It seems like companies kept asking you to be in commercials. What was it like shooting another one with Patrick Mahomes?

REID: “They did. Listen I’m sticking to my day job. I’m not an actor for sure. It was something in the offseason that I did, and the reason I kind of did it was for (Patrick) Pat (Mahomes), and they asked us to do another one so I did it, but I know I’m not very good at it so I’m going to keep my day job here (laughter).”

Q: How did you feel about Rashee Rice’s performance regarding creating space on his touchdown catch?

REID: “He did a nice job. Both him and Blake (Bell) did nice jobs on theirs, kind of feeling the area. And that’s one of Rashee’s strengths, and we could use them a little bit more in those types – different situations where space is important. We’re trying to bring these guys along as we go, and I thought he sure did a nice job right there.

I have talked to him a couple different times; we just need to keep going through the process here. You’ve got to keep playing and the more he plays – that’s just not his thing. He’s not a guy that drops balls. He’s got great hands. We just have to keep working through it.”Q: Last night Kadarius Toney posted some things about the Giants, how do you deal with social media controversy?REID: "Yeah, to be honest with you I didn’t know that. How does a tackle develop that as far as getting on the quarterback’s cadence and being able to get that first quick step on the outside?REID: “Yeah, so, he works on that hard, he gets pretty close at times and sometimes too fast. We just got – we have to make sure it’s not too fast because then that hurts the team. He takes a lot of pride in that and works very hard at that. Try to make sure that he gets off well and you know you watch the rest ofthe games this weekend, that’s what these defensive ends, the way they can roll that helps you get into position a tick quicker – but you don’t want to be offsides that’s for sure.”Q: What do you tell the tackles about where they can line up?REID: “Normally, you’re able to split the center’s hip there. The guys – you don’t want it to be a tell when you’re running or passing, you also have the officials there, they will normally help you out with that if you are too deep. They’ll give you a warning and you go with it. They do a good job with that, I think. The guys are trying to get every advantage they can. This has been a life – since the passing game has come into fruition, that’s been one of the things tackles do. I mean, that’s been around for a long time and then you just have to make sure that you don’t take advantage of it and get yourself either too deep or leave off the snap too quick.”Q: How did you feel about the run and blocking in this first game do you think it’s something that can get better week to week?REID: “We can always do better, and we need to, we need to do better there. So, we’ll get that taken care of. The matchup between the Jayhawks and the Wolfpack will be the first in the series history, and it will be Kansas’ first road trip to the Pacific time zone since Sept. 7, 2002 (at UNLV). The Jayhawks are 13-4-1 all-time against current members of the Mountain West Conference.

Kansas enters its matchup with Nevada with a 2-0 record for the second-straight season and first time since 2008-09. The Jayhawks are coming off a 34-23 victory over Illinois on Sept. 8, in which Kansas put up 539 yards of total offense including 262 yards on the ground. Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels made his season debut completing 21-of-29 for 277 yards and two touchdowns, while junior running back Devin Neal rushed for 120 yards on just 10 carries for a touchdown.

Nevada is in its second year under head coach Ken Wilson and has fallen to 0-2 to start the 2023 season following losses to Idaho (33-6, Sept. 9) and USC (66-14, Sept. 2). Nevada has lost 12 straight games entering Saturday night’s game with Kansas.

The IRC is helping local groups, churches or individuals support refugees from Ukraine and other countries. Besides IRC, other national groups supporting refugees are Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Servies, Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee Services, and RefugePoint.

Salina League of Women Voters to hold Refugee Presentation Sept. 12

Independent commission has begun to examine pay increases, fair compensation

TOPEKA —&nbsp; Increasing long-stagnant legislative pay could revolutionize state politics by encouraging Kansans from more diverse backgrounds to seek public office, but top Republican legislators also cautioned against dramatically escalating compensation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Senate President Ty Masterson, R-Andover, said low pay has been a longstanding barrier for many Kansans. But Masterson also warned against raising pay to the point where Kansans have a marked financial incentive to serve in the Legislature.&nbsp;

“The truth is, for years now, it’s been a hurdle for large segments of our population to even attempt and represent their neighbors in this way,” Masterson said during a Thursday legislative meeting on compensation. “We’d like to see us make that hurdle go away. However, I also don’t believe it should be a career. There needs to be some level of service. Public service, at some level does have sacrifice to it, and I think that should exist but there needs to be balance.”

Low compensation and long hours have blocked many Kansans from entering the field, leaving retired Kansans or those with independent income or extremely flexible jobs facing less competition for seats. In past sessions, critics of the system have said the pay barrier allows affluent Kansans to have a much greater voice in state policy than those from other economic backgrounds.&nbsp;

State legislators are&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2023_24/committees/ctte_ot_legislative_compensation_commission_1/documents/testimony/20230907_04.pdf">currently paid</a>&nbsp;a base salary of $88.66 for every day during the session, a salary that hasn’t changed since 2009. Starting in October, lawmakers will receive a per diem allowance of $166 per day to offset food and lodging costs during the session. In an average 92-day session, the pay works out to about $23,429 per year, with additional compensation for leadership positions.&nbsp;

The state ranked in the bottom third for legislative compensation in a 2019 legislative study of 14 other states. The study found Oklahoma, Missouri and Colorado paid their lawmakers about $48,000 per year. The lowest state compensation was between $12,000 and $13,000 per year, in Maine, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

Speaker of the House Dan Hawkins, R-Wichita, shared Masterson’s sentiments.&nbsp;

He estimated lawmakers spend about 10-15 hours per week outside of the 92-day session on constituent needs or community engagement, with another 15 hours of work for anyone who heads a committee.&nbsp;

“We don’t have a normal job as legislators,” Hawkins said. “I wouldn’t call our job normal at all in any stretch of the imagination. We are working all the time. … Truly, it is a huge level of service but we love the people we serve, and that’s what we’re really trying to do is just serve and do the best job we can.”&nbsp;

While Hawkins said compensation rates needed to be adjusted, he also warned against raising pay too high.&nbsp;

“There has to be a level of service,” Hawkins said. “We’re a citizen legislature so we don’t want people just to consider that their main job. We need to go back home and go to work. And so there’s always going to be a balance.”&nbsp;

The first round of compensation rates and salary will be decided by Dec. 1, 2023, and implemented in the 2025 legislative session, with rates set to be readjusted every four years.&nbsp;

Jason Watkins from the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce, a former state representative who introduced the initial bill content on behalf of the chamber, said better pay would equalize the field.&nbsp;

“One of the reasons that we introduced this legislation is we believe in representative democracy,” Watkins said. “The Legislature should look like a cross section of the state of Kansas and folks from all walks of life should be able to serve.”&nbsp;

During his time as a representative, Watkins said he knew several people who could only serve one or two terms before leaving due to financial constraints. Watkins said lawmakers would joke that the term limits for Kansas lawmakers were decided by when they went&nbsp; bankrupt.&nbsp;

“A lot of folks that have served in the Legislature really experienced financial hardship,” Watkins said. “And listen, nobody should get rich serving at any level of government. But people shouldn’t have to go broke either. And that’s the stark truth.”

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;No. 15 Kansas State erupted with a late first-half score and then clamped down on Troy in the second half, as the Wildcats snapped the Trojans’ 12-game winning streak with a 42-13 victory and continued an impressive stretch of 40-point performances in front of a sellout crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

K-State led just 14-10 when Will Howard drove the Wildcats 66 yards on five plays and hit sixth-year senior wide receiver Phillip Brooks with a 39-yard touchdown strike with 10 seconds left in the first half for a 21-10 halftime lead. Then the Wildcats held the Trojans to four consecutive three-and-outs to start the second half to turn a sleeper into a blowout.

“We needed that game,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “We had a lot of adversity, especially in the first half, and we kind of rose above it. The momentum flipped a little bit. Great job by (offensive coordinator) Coach (Collin) Klein and our offense getting the touchdown before halftime.

“We talk about a four-over-four mentality, which is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half. That was critical for us to get that score. We need to continue to get better and clean some things up, but that’s a quality opponent we beat.”

Troy entered with the second-longest winning streak in the FBS and left Manhattan with its biggest blowout defeat since a 37-point loss against Appalachian State on November 28, 2020.

K-State has scored 40 points in four straight regular-season games for the first time since the middle of the 2002 season.

Howard completed 21-of-32 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns and one interception, and he added two rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats, 2-0, who have allowed just one touchdown in their first two games.

“It wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but I think we needed this,” Howard said. “This is a game where we learned a lot. This was a really, really good team. Troy won 12 straight and they had one of the tougher defenses I’ve gone against. Those dudes were hitting and heated us up pretty well. That was a really good game for us to learn from.”

Troy quarterback Gunnar Watson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Lewis to make it 14-10, but that’s as close as the Trojans, 1-1, could get as the Wildcats stymied star running back Kimani Vidal and made multiple defensive stops coming out of the locker room.

K-State outscored Troy, 21-3, over the final two quarters.

“Something we emphasized a lot this offseason is called the four-over-fours, so those four minutes before halftime and four minutes after is a real critical part of the game,” K-State linebacker Austin Moore said. “That’s something we talked about at halftime. It was huge for us.”

While Vidal finished with 83 rushing yards on 17 attempts one week after darting for a school-record 248 rushing yards in his opener, K-State went to Brooks, who had seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another score on a jet sweep.

“The first one was a walk-in touchdown and the second one, somebody had to make a play,” Brooks said. “We were struggling on offense. It’s crazy because I just put my head down to work and looked up and saw the results. I’m just making a play. That’s my mindset.”

Brooks led a skill-position group that enjoyed solid performances as Jadon Jackson caught a nine-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and running back Treshaun Ward took a shovel pass into the end zone for a 35-13 lead with 8 minutes, 48 seconds left in the game.

K-State outgained Troy 397-286 in total offense and held the Trojans to just 6-of-17 on third downs while the Wildcats racked up four quarterback sacks, including two by defensive end Khalid Duke. It was Duke’s third-down sack late in the first half that enabled the Wildcats to regain possession and drive for the score just before halftime.

K-State surrendered just 98 total yards in the second half.

“All of us are dogs on the field,” Duke said. “Everybody is getting to the ball, and everybody is one unit and communicating and dominant. We just dominate every single down, not letting any offense get momentum and drive the ball down the field, and just playing as a team. When you see us together celebrating as a team, that’s the Mob.

K-State won the coin toss, took the ball, and drove 71 yards in eight plays, starting with the pass and mixing in the run. Howard found Brooks twice, Ward showcased his elusiveness with a 20-yard run, and Howard capped the drive by hitting Jackson, who was running right to left, in the middle of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats outgained Troy 147-40 in the first quarter and wasted little time reaching the end zone early in the second quarter. Facing second-and-goal at the 2-yard line, Howard handed off to Brooks on a jet sweep and the wide receiver caught a block from Ben Sinnott before running past the right pylon for a 14-0 lead.

Moments later, K-State’s defense stepped up when Brendan Mott applied pressure and Will Lee III intercepted a pass intended for Deshon Stoudemire and returned the ball 11 yards to K-State 46. However, Howard threw an interception in the end zone and the Trojans amassed a 14-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 24-yard field goal to get on the scoreboard for the first time.

“I know (Howard) was kicking himself for the one pick that he threw into the end zone, probably getting a little bit greedy potentially, but he really settled in after that and said, ‘I made a mistake, I’ve got to own it, and I’ve got to come back really well,’” Klieman said. “He settled in and played really well.”

After K-State was unable to move the ball, confident Troy came back with a 75-yard drive that ended when 6-foot-3 Chris Lewis caught a 21-yard touchdown over Lee to trim K-State’s lead to 14-10.

However, K-State, in the face of adversity during an underwhelming quarter of football, finished on a high note.

Howard expertly drove down the field with 49 seconds left until halftime. He rushed for 15 yards, then Brooks hauled-in a pass on a crossing route at the 24-yard line, and he raced past a block from Jackson for a 39-yard score to put K-State ahead, 21-10, with 10 seconds left in opening half.

“There were a lot of opportunities we had,” Howard said. “We didn’t capitalize on a couple opportunities. We learned a lot from this going into a big week next week.”

It wasn’t until the final play of the third quarter that Vidal popped off a long run when he weaved inside the defense for 46 yards to the K-State 23-yard line. However, K-State’s defense stiffened, and the Trojans settled for a 37-yard field goal.

“We gave them one big run, but other than that, we did an awfully good job in the rush game,” Klieman said. “We work hard on our run game, and we’re hitting our fits and hitting them physically and pushing the pile back.”

It all goes back to the four-over-four philosophy.

“Our run defense, we’re pretty elite,” cornerback Jacob Parrish said. “We had the four-over-four. We did a good job with that.”

COLLIN KLEIN, OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

On what needs improvement on offense from the first game…

“Just had a lot of little things. I don't know if there's one big thing I could put my finger on. There were a lot of little things you know. I thought overall it was it was a clean effort for sure, but there's a lot of little things. There were a lot of great teachable moments at every position that I think guys are taking the heart and are excited about just continuing to get better and gel together as the offense of 2023.”

On the pass blocking of DJ Giddens…

“DJ has been tremendous in pass protection. He does a great job of taking away that space, closing that distance and getting his face on him. He’s a physical player, and those are the little things that make those big plays happen. He did a heck of a job on that one for sure.

On what he see from the Troy defense…

“They're extremely well coached. They've shown to can tackle well. You don't see a lot of missed tackles that turn into bleeding yardage and big plays. They got a good scheme. They got, obviously, a lot of experience and have a championship pedigree. So, I think it's going to be a big challenge for us.”

“I think they're really aggressive. I think they have the ability to be aggressive. I’ve been really impressed with a lot of those DBs and their hips and changing direction and their quickness. So, we have to make sure that we have great technique, fundamentals and win and be on time with the football, because they'll make you pay if you're not.”

On the distribution of playing time at running back…

“A little bit of it is game-to-game and a little bit of it, sometimes, will be with the flow. Sometimes we'll be talking about it, and to Coach Anderson, I joke, I'm like, ‘You’re going to have to read my mind a little bit because sometimes I don't know where I'm going next or where we're going to end up going next with different personnel groupings or turbos or whatever.’ So, a little bit of that is just going to be flow and who's in there, but that's the beauty of both of those guys. We believe in both of them. It's not like, ‘Hey, Treshaun can only do these plays and DJ can only do these plays.’ We believe in both of them and know they're going to do a heck of a job when they're in there.”

JOE KLANDERMAN, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

On what he was pleased with in the first game…

“I was pleased with a lot of guys. I was pleased with Colby McCalister. He ended up getting the start for us, and I felt really confident with him, but I thought he played really well. I was more than comfortable after seeing Will Lee II. I think Will played exceptionally well. Damian Ilalio was another one. There were a lot of guys seeing their first action that answered the bell. So, I was pleased with a number of guys.”

On trying to replace Jake Clifton as the backup at linebacker…

“He’s just kind of Johnny-Do-It-All, isn't he. We have guys that are capable. Tobi Osunsanmi is phenomenal, and he may be as gifted of an athlete as we have in the program. Asa Newsom is not that much different than Tobi. He's just really, really green. Austin Romaine I think is more than ready. So, guys are just going to have to go when they get their opportunity. It's nice to have Jake because he had some snaps under his belt, but he'll be back later on in the year and we'll get him back in the rotation. He is very valuable, no question about it, but I think we've got guys that are ready to answer the bell and get their chance to shine.”

On Troy running back Kimani Vidal…

“Yeah, I mean, he's one of the best in the country as far as I'm concerned. He just has incredible vision, incredible balance. I think he really understands their scheme well. He understands where to hit things and how things are going to wash and move. He’s just played a lot of football there for those guys, and from what I hear from the special teams guys, he's on the punt team. He's just a really good football player. I just have a lot of respect for him. So, we've obviously seen good backs before, but he's a special one. I don't know if we'll see too many better than him this year.”

On the progression of Uso Seumalo…

“He’s just a much more comfortable, much more confident player. Not even in what he's doing, just comfortable and confident in his own abilities that he could play at this level. It was a guy that was playing running back in 8-man football not that long ago and was just really green and the wet behind the ears. I think he's been so much more impactful as a leader, not only in the defensive line room, but in the defense in general. I'm excited for him to get fully healthy and show people what he can do.”

“Well, they’re tremendously athletic on the perimeter. I think that's something that is going to present some challenges and some problems. Obviously, we mentioned the tailback. When you put those two things together, that can give you some real issues because it's going to be hard to load a bunch of people in there to stop the run because then you're going to leave some one-on-one opportunities on the outside and vice versa. You start doing some things coverage-wise, you're going to have some trouble, in the box. So, they have a good little mixture there of what they can do, and you couple that with a quarterback that's played as many snaps as he has and a guy that manages their offense so well, and I think they're a good o-line. They're a physical group up front. I know they lost a couple of pretty good players from a year ago, but I have a lot of respect for that program. I don't know if there's one big thing I could put my finger on. There were a lot of little things you know. I thought overall it was it was a clean effort for sure, but there's a lot of little things. There were a lot of great teachable moments at every position that I think guys are taking the heart and are excited about just continuing to get better and gel together as the offense of 2023.”On the pass blocking of DJ Giddens…“DJ has been tremendous in pass protection. He does a great job of taking away that space, closing that distance and getting his face on him. He’s a physical player, and those are the little things that make those big plays happen. He did a heck of a job on that one for sure.On what he see from the Troy defense…“They're extremely well coached. They've shown to can tackle well. You don't see a lot of missed tackles that turn into bleeding yardage and big plays. They got a good scheme. They got, obviously, a lot of experience and have a championship pedigree. So, I think it's going to be a big challenge for us.”On the Troy secondary…“I think they're really aggressive. I think they have the ability to be aggressive. I’ve been really impressed with a lot of those DBs and their hips and changing direction and their quickness. So, we have to make sure that we have great technique, fundamentals and win and be on time with the football, because they'll make you pay if you're not.”On the distribution of playing time at running back…“A little bit of it is game-to-game and a little bit of it, sometimes, will be with the flow. Sometimes we'll be talking about it, and to Coach Anderson, I joke, I'm like, ‘You’re going to have to read my mind a little bit because sometimes I don't know where I'm going next or where we're going to end up going next with different personnel groupings or turbos or whatever.’ So, a little bit of that is just going to be flow and who's in there, but that's the beauty of both of those guys. We believe in both of them. It's not like, ‘Hey, Treshaun can only do these plays and DJ can only do these plays.’ We believe in both of them and know they're going to do a heck of a job when they're in there.”JOE KLANDERMAN, DEFENSIVE COORDINATOROn what he was pleased with in the first game…“I was pleased with a lot of guys. I was pleased with Colby McCalister. He ended up getting the start for us, and I felt really confident with him, but I thought he played really well. I was more than comfortable after seeing Will Lee II. I think Will played exceptionally well. Damian Ilalio was another one. There were a lot of guys seeing their first action that answered the bell. So, I was pleased with a number of guys.”On trying to replace Jake Clifton as the backup at linebacker…“He’s just kind of Johnny-Do-It-All, isn't he. We have guys that are capable. Tobi Osunsanmi is phenomenal, and he may be as gifted of an athlete as we have in the program. Asa Newsom is not that much different than Tobi. He's just really, really green. Austin Romaine I think is more than ready. So, guys are just going to have to go when they get their opportunity. It's nice to have Jake because he had some snaps under his belt, but he'll be back later on in the year and we'll get him back in the rotation. He is very valuable, no question about it, but I think we've got guys that are ready to answer the bell and get their chance to shine.”On Troy running back Kimani Vidal…“Yeah, I mean, he's one of the best in the country as far as I'm concerned. He just has incredible vision, incredible balance. I think he really understands their scheme well. He understands where to hit things and how things are going to wash and move. He’s just played a lot of football there for those guys, and from what I hear from the special teams guys, he's on the punt team. He's just a really good football player. I just have a lot of respect for him. So, we've obviously seen good backs before, but he's a special one. I don't know if we'll see too many better than him this year.”On the progression of Uso Seumalo…“He’s just a much more comfortable, much more confident player. Not even in what he's doing, just comfortable and confident in his own abilities that he could play at this level. It was a guy that was playing running back in 8-man football not that long ago and was just really green and the wet behind the ears. I think he's been so much more impactful as a leader, not only in the defensive line room, but in the defense in general. I'm excited for him to get fully healthy and show people what he can do.”On the Troy offense…“Well, they’re tremendously athletic on the perimeter. I think that's something that is going to present some challenges and some problems. Obviously, we mentioned the tailback. When you put those two things together, that can give you some real issues because it's going to be hard to load a bunch of people in there to stop the run because then you're going to leave some one-on-one opportunities on the outside and vice versa. You start doing some things coverage-wise, you're going to have some trouble, in the box. So, they have a good little mixture there of what they can do, and you couple that with a quarterback that's played as many snaps as he has and a guy that manages their offense so well, and I think they're a good o-line. They're a physical group up front. I know they lost a couple of pretty good players from a year ago, but I have a lot of respect for that program. I know they've got good players at all the positions. So, it's just the experience that some of those guys have that concerns me a little bit.”

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — In an aggressive move that angered Republicans, the Biden administration canceled the seven remaining oil and gas leases in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday, overturning sales held in the Trump administration's waning days, and proposed stronger protections against development on vast swaths of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.

The Department of Interior's scrapping of the leases comes after the Biden administration disappointed environmental groups earlier this year by approving the Willow oil project in the petroleum reserve, a massive project by ConocoPhillips Alaska that could produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day on Alaska's petroleum-rich North Slope. Protections are proposed for more than 20,000 square miles (51,800 square kilometers) of land in the reserve in the western Arctic.

Some critics who said the approval of Willow flew in the face of Biden's pledges to address climate change lauded Wednesday's announcement. But they said more could be done. Litigation over the approval of the Willow project is pending.

"Alaska is home to many of America's most breathtaking natural wonders and culturally significant areas. As the climate crisis warms the Arctic more than twice as fast as the rest of the world, we have a responsibility to protect this treasured region for all ages," Biden said in a statement.

His actions "meet the urgency of the climate crisis" and will "protect our lands and waters for generations to come," Biden said.

Alaska's Republican governor condemned Biden's moves and threatened to sue. And at least one Democratic lawmaker said the decision could hurt Indigenous communities in an isolated region where oil development is an important economic driver.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who drew criticism for her role in the approval of the Willow project, said Wednesday that "no one will have rights to drill for oil in one of the most sensitive landscapes on earth." However, a 2017 law mandates another lease sale by late 2024. Administration officials said they intend to comply with the law.

The Biden administration also announced proposed rules aimed at providing stronger protections against new leasing and development in portions of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska that are designated as special areas for their wildlife, subsistence, scenic or other values. The proposal still must go through public comment. Willow lies within the reserve but was not expected to be affected by the proposed rules.

The plain is marked by hills, rivers and small lakes and tundra. Migratory birds and caribou pass through the plain, which provides habitat for wildlife including polar bears and wolves.Alaska political leaders — including some Democrats — have long pushed to allow oil and gas drilling in the refuge in part because of its economic impact on Indigenous communities in an area with few other jobs. Many of those same voices pressed Biden to approve the Willow project for the same reason."I am deeply frustrated by the reversal of these leases in ANWR," said U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat, using a common shorthand for the refuge. "This administration showed that it is capable of listening to Alaskans with the approval of the Willow Project, and it is some of those same Inupiat North Slope communities who are most impacted by this decision. I will continue to advocate for them and for Alaska's ability to explore and develop our natural resources."Alaska's congressional delegation in 2017 succeeded in getting language added to a federal tax law that called for the U.S. government to hold two lease sales in the region by late 2024.Drilling opponents on Wednesday urged Congress to repeal the leasing provision from the 2017 law and permanently make the coastal plain off limits to drilling."It is nearly impossible to overstate the importance of today's announcements for Arctic conservation," said Jamie Williams, president of the Wilderness Society. "Once again, the Arctic Refuge is free of oil leases. Our climate is a bit safer and there is renewed hope for permanently protecting one of the last great wild landscapes in America."Alaska Republican U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan denounced Biden's actions as the latest volley in what he called a "war on Alaska."Two other leases that were issued as part of the first-of-its-kind sale for the refuge in January 2021 were previously given up by the small companies that held them amid legal wrangling and uncertainty over the drilling program.After taking office, Biden issued an executive order calling for a temporary moratorium on activities related to the leasing program and for the Interior secretary to review the program. Haaland later in 2021 ordered a new environmental review after concluding there were "multiple legal deficiencies" underlying the Trump-era leasing program. Haaland halted activities related to the leasing program pending the new analysis.A draft environmental review was released Wednesday.The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, a state corporation that won seven leases in the 2021 sale, sued over the moratorium. But a federal judge recently found the delay by Interior to conduct a new review was not unreasonable.The corporation obtained the leases to preserve drilling rights in case oil companies did not come forward. Major oil companies sat out the sale, held after prominent banks had announced they would not finance Arctic oil and gas projects.Bernadette Demientieff, executive director of the Gwich'in Steering Committee, thanked the administration for the lease cancellation — but issued a warning."We know that our sacred land is only temporarily safe from oil and gas development," she said. "We urge the administration and our leaders in Congress to repeal the oil and gas program and permanently protect the Arctic Refuge."___
