Faryl Marlene McDill Lange was born on September 19, 1932, northwest of Mankato, Kansas, to Raymond Alma McDill and Ruth May Underwood McDill. She departed her earthly life on February 20, 2022, at the Jewell County Hospital ISB, Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 89 years. 

Faryl was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Paul Lange on December 12, 2021; parents, grandparents; grandson Christopher Alyn Railsback; and sister-in-law Eilene McDill.

Faryl attended school in Mankato except for her 3rd&nbsp;and 4th&nbsp;grades at Enterprise District #26 in Limestone Township.&nbsp; She graduated from Mankato High school in May of 1950 as valedictorian of her class.&nbsp; 

After graduation, she began work as the secretary at the Mankato School District superintendent’s office for two years.&nbsp; She then worked at the Jewell-Mitchell REC. &nbsp;

In the early 1950s Faryl joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, Kansas.&nbsp; She married Raymond Paul Lange on April 23, 1955 at the church. &nbsp;In 1958 Faryl began her years as a stay-at-home mother.&nbsp; She performed babysitting duties for several children during those years.&nbsp; In 1971 she returned to work at Jewell-Mitchell REC and worked there until her retirement in 1994.

During her youth she helped look after her brothers.&nbsp; She helped with milking cows and feeding the turkeys.&nbsp; She was a member of the Mankato Eager Beavers 4-H Club and had projects at the county and state fairs.&nbsp; She continued to be involved in later years by serving as a superintendent at the fair and taking items to display.&nbsp; She attended many 4-H events for her grandchildren and served as Chelsey’s clothing construction project leader.&nbsp; She took piano lessons from Berniece Scott and encouraged her daughters to take piano lessons.&nbsp; Faryl spent many days suggesting ideas for play activities, listening to piano songs, and teaching the girls about sewing.&nbsp; She welcomed her father-in-law Paul Lange to live with the family for three years.

Faryl was interested in family genealogy and began researching her family history in the late 1960s.&nbsp; She traced her mother’s ancestry to a Revolutionary Solider, Nathan Wood, and with proven records was able to join the Desire Tobey Sears Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution on October 13, 1972.&nbsp; She served in many positions of the chapter and the northwest district including eleven years as chapter Regent.&nbsp; She was the secretary/treasurer of the Cole-Lumpkin-Underwood Reunion which started in 1932 and continues today.&nbsp; She attended many of these picnics over the last 89 years and was always interested in adding to the record books.&nbsp; She continued to explore other family lines and Jewell County history throughout her life.&nbsp; With her passing, a wealth of knowledge about the area is gone.

Faryl was very active in her community.&nbsp; She served as the county recruitment chairman of the Jewell County Bloodmobile, member and officer of Modern Minerva, volunteered at the Jewell County Long-Term Care for bingo and organized programs for Tuesday Happenings, and volunteered at the Thrift Shop to name just a few of her volunteer services.&nbsp; She was president of the Mankato High School Alumni Association, a Girl Scout leader, member of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary 7830 and served in many capacities including president and treasurer, member of the Mankato Garden Club, the Jewell County Historical Society, and the Jewell American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughters Corlene Lange, Barbara Railsback, and Janelle Greene; sons-in-law Burton Railsback and Scott Greene; grandchildren Matt Railsback and wife Allison, Chelsey Greene, Corbin Greene, and Allison Railsback; great grandchildren Sawyer Railsback and Savannah Railsback; brothers Marvin McDill and Mahlon McDill; sister-in-law Phyllis Lange; nephews Richard Sholtz, Mike Metzler, Landon McDill and niece Nickia McDill Vance, several great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato with Pastor Dennis Beckmann officiating and Irene Ortman, musician. &nbsp;Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Melby Mortuary, Mankato, with family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Casket bearers are her grandchildren Corbin Greene, Matthew Railsback, Chelsey Greene, and Allison Railsback, niece Nickia Vance, and nephews Richard Sholtz, Mike Metzler and Landon McDill. &nbsp;

Scientists are being chastised for not communicating well with citizens about this pandemic. But communications involves two parties: a clear speaker and a literate listener. And the biggest problem these last few years is listener illiteracy. &nbsp;

It became evident that the masking effort in 2020—despite being only partially enacted—had dramatically reduced the number of influenza cases. But large numbers of the public dismissed this news, alleging that public health officials were just counting cases of flu as COVID-19. But the percentage of U.S. respiratory specimens submitted to the CDC that tested positive for influenza dropped from over 20 percent to 2.3 percent. Nevertheless, a large number of science illiterate Americans continue to believe there is no way to distinguish between flu and COVID-19.

The full explanation has long been available on the CDC website: “The CDC Influenza SARS-CoV-2 (Flu SC2) Multiplex Assay is a real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test that detects and differentiates RNA from SARS-CoV-2, influenza A virus, and influenza B virus in upper or lower respiratory specimens.” But despite the availability of such accurate information, a reader has to have some understanding of what “PCR” and “RNA” mean. In the United States, few outside of healthcare professionals have a clue.

Folks all want to know how “dangerous” a new disease agent is going to be. But that is an inexact word. It involves more specific factors such as how “contagious” it is or how “virulent” it will be and whether folks can be asymptomatic but still be carriers. In this pandemic, each of these distinctions has been important. But much of our population does not understand these concepts.

Many citizens think that we wear masks to protect ourselves. But early in this pandemic, researchers analyzed three scenarios: masks as “source control” where an infected person wears a mask and the aerosol particles are filtered as they breathe out, “wearer protection” where an uninfected person wears a mask to filter the particles being breathed in, and “universal masking” where both are wearing a mask. Research was clear. A properly worn face mask on an infected person is significantly more important in reducing transmission to others than a mask prevents an uninfected person from becoming infected. And the lowest rate of transmission is when both are wearing face masks. The concept is simple and taught in physics classes: diffusion. Yet few citizens understand diffusion. And simply talking about “one-way masking” overlooks this critical difference.

There are two parties involved in effective communication: the speaker and the listener. These concepts of “PCR,” “RNA, ” “aerosol” and “diffusion” cannot be reduced to everyday words. They require a minimal science education where these concepts are taught by knowledgeable teachers in science classes. Lab experiences make these terms meaningful. That has occurred in most of Europe and East Asia, but not here.

This problem of science illiteracy had already arisen earlier in medicine and pharmacy. When&nbsp; patients come into the hospital and are diagnosed with a serious ailment, medical doctors do not have&nbsp; time to provide the semesters-long human anatomy and physiology knowledge that explains their disorder or disease in full context. When you pick up your prescription at a pharmacy, you are now directed to a window where the pharmacist attempts to explain that three-a-day does not mean take all three at the same time.

Another complication comes from our prior success eliminating the major serious contagious diseases through antibiotics and vaccination. Today only a handful of elderly remember whooping cough, smallpox or the Mother’s March that funded the very successful polio vaccine.

No amount of simplified language can make up for listeners who do not understand the most basic concepts in modern health. If there is a major cause for this illiteracy, it is not to be found in scientists who cannot communicate well. The problem is over forty years of inadequate American schooling in human biology and related basic sciences at K–12 and university levels. And that problem rests with school boards, university schools of education, and our cultural disregard for academics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. He also has lectured at 27 universities during 20 trips to China. He holds the distinction of “Faculty Emeritus” at Emporia State University.

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: Illiterate listeners

Salina: Vicki Ann Beard McCune, 65, passed through this earthly veil on Friday, February 11th, 2022. She was born to Willie and Jeanann Hepner Beard on July 3rd, 1956, in Salina, Kansas. Vicki graduated from Salina Central High School in 1974.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Vicki’s love for the Lord and His little children was evident as she faithfully taught them for many years in their primary Sunday school classes. Vicki was an avid genealogist and a member of the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society. She retired from working with The Services for the Blind Division of the State of Kansas Social and Rehabilitative Services.

Vicki greatly loved her family and friends. She was a devoted niece and daughter as she was the main caretaker to her ailing aunt and uncle and later her parents until their deaths.

If you were fortunate enough to know Vicki, you know that she cared so completely for people. It didn't matter if she knew you for five minutes or fifty years, she'd listen to any problem and rejoice at any success you had. She brightened the lives of those she knew.

Vicki had long been dealing with a number of health issues and fought so hard for years to overcome them. Though our hearts grieve for the loss, there is peace in knowing that she now rests from her mortal challenges.

&nbsp;Vicki was preceded in death by her parents; brother Dennis Wheeler; and niece Nicola Beard.

She is survived by her son Scott Breeden, of Lakewood, Colorado; brothers Michael Wheeler and Robert Beard, of Salina; and nephews Adam Beard, Bretton Beard, and Cole Tshudy. &nbsp;

Viewing will be held Monday, the 21st&nbsp;from 4:00 to 6:00 at Roselawn Heights Memorial Park 1920 E. Crawford St. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 Tuesday morning, February 22nd, 2022, at Roselawn Memorial Park 1920 E. Crawford St.

Collin John Francis&nbsp;was born on September 6, 1948, at St. John's Hospital in Salina, Kansas. He passed away, surrounded by family, on February 14, 2022, from complications of pneumonia. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Vike and Yvonne Francis; two brothers, Trey and Sean Francis; and his lovely wife of 43 years, Libby Vering Francis. 

He is survived by three daughters, Shannon Simoneau, Erin Francis, and Colleen Francis, and three wonderful granddaughters, Lauren Simoneau, Emma Simoneau, and Libby Francis-Marshal, all of Kansas City, MO. He loved each of them very much. His storytelling and humor will be missed greatly.

Ever an entrepreneur and hard worker, Collin opened and managed several businesses throughout his life. He spent his younger days managing several fast-food restaurants. He and his wife, Libby, started many business ventures including restaurants, a free newspaper, and an antique and furniture refinishing shop. They worked in the shop together for 20 years. With his brother and dear friends, he was able to enjoy his love of the car business, using his salesmanship, charisma, and humor with his customers. In 2004, Collin and Libby retired happily together.

He truly loved music and the nostalgia it evoked. With an endless supply of music and stories, he shared fond memories with all that would listen. He enjoyed making tapes for friends and collected over 50,000 records which he later sold, one by one, on eBay along with post cards, stamps, military medals, and other items collected over the years from auctions and flea markets. In 2011, a year after his beloved wife passed away, he moved to Branson, MO, where he attended hundreds of live shows over nine years.

Collin loved to write poetry and did so almost daily since watching the 1968 Elvis: The Comeback Special. He was also teaching himself to play the guitar and harmonica. He will miss college football games (especially Kansas State University football) and the TV show Survivor.

He will miss his friends and family but looks forward to being reunited with the love of his life, his dear wife Libby. Their favorite quote was "Love is a friendship that has caught on fire." Theirs sure did!

The funeral services for Collin Francis scheduled for Sat. Feb 19 have been postponed due to COVID-19. A future date will be announced.

Representatives give preliminary approval by a vote of 77-42

TOPEKA — Republican representatives are eager Wednesday to approve a 
constitutional amendment that could provide legislators with new powers 
over the executive branch should it receive Senate and public approval.

If passed by two-thirds of the House and Senate and approved by a vote of the people of Kansas, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/measures/HCR5014/">the resolution</a>
 proposed would amend article 1 of the Kansas state constitution. By 
adding a new section to the constitution, the measure provides the 
Legislature a new authority to set and revoke new rules within state 
agencies housed under the executive branch.

Throughout the debate, House Republicans batted away concerns over 
the effect of the provisions on the separation of powers and amendment 
to place other issues like Medicaid expansion and legalizing Marijuana 
on the ballot.

“We’ve been given broad authority to not only carry out the law but 
also to create it,” said Rep. Barbra Wasinger, R-Hays. “This amendment 
approves that legislative oversight and allows us to be responsible for 
creating laws.”

The measure received preliminary approval 77-42 with five Republicans
 — Rep. Dave Baker, of Council Grove; Rep. Owen Donohoe, of Shawnee; 
Rep. Boyd Orr, of Fowler; Rep. Mark Schreiber, of Emporia;&nbsp;and Rep. John
 Wheeler, of Garden City — voting against it. The measure will need 84 
votes tomorrow to pass.

If passed by the House and Senate, the constitutional amendment would be on the general election ballot in 2022.

Republicans are motivated primarily by a recent decision by the 
Kansas Department of Labor to add or amend six regulations regarding 
workers’ compensation. The decision drew the frustrations of several 
business groups and legislators <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/politics/2021/11/22/kansas-republican-lawmakers-target-bureaucratic-government-regulations-pro-workers-compensation/8643706002/">during a November hearing</a> who believed the regulations impeded statute and legislative authority.

Currently, the Legislature can only adopt a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/statute/077_000_0000_chapter/077_004_0000_article/077_004_0026_section/077_004_0026_k/">concurrent resolution expressing concern or requesting the revocation of a regulation</a>. The rules and regulations committee issues comments and recommendations on proposals from these agencies.

However, Rep. Boog Highberger, a Lawrence Democrat, said the systems 
in place already function to address any overreach in regulations by 
executive branch agencies.

“I think it’s clear that if there’s a problem in the system, it’s 
sent to the attorney general’s office, and the problem needs to be fixed
 there,” Highberger said. “I’ve been involved in the process during my 
time in state government over the years. It really works, and there are a
 lot of checks and balances on it, a lot of guardrails.”

A 1984 Kansas Supreme Court ruling held that a previous measure 
allowing the Legislature to suspend or revoke administrative rule was 
unconstitutional because it violated the separation of powers.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office signed off on the legality of
 this new resolution in July, after the state’s budget office and 
Department of Administration signed off in January.

House Speaker Ron Ryckman told House Republicans in a meeting before 
the House session Wednesday that Schmidt came up with the idea that 
“basically eliminates the fourth branch of government,” a reference to 
employees at state agencies who determine how to carry out the laws 
passed by the Legislature. Schmidt, a Republican, is running against 
Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly in this year’s election.

Ryckman asked House Republicans if they want “these folks” to make 
decisions like closing churches, shutting down businesses and giving 
overseas fraudsters money from the unemployment fund, or allow the 
Legislature to have a final say.

“It doesn’t matter who the governor is,” Ryckman said. “Bureaucrats 
have been here longer than us. They’ll stay here longer than us.”

The proposed constitutional amendment would not apply to the examples
 Ryckman provided. The governor closed churches and shut down businesses
 in April 2020 through executive orders in response to COVID-19. Bogus 
unemployment claims were filed in every state.

Majority Leader Dan Hawkins told Republican representatives prior to debate that he is “really passionate” about securing the ability to usurp the authority of the executive branch.

He said the committee that oversees rules and regulations can voice 
complaints, but bureaucrats at state agencies rarely listen. The 
committee lacks the power to block new rules and regulations from taking
 effect.

“It doesn’t make any difference what the governor is,” Hawkins said. 
“Those bureaucrats stay year in and year out, and they literally change 
the course of any law they want.”

Rep. John Carmichael, D-Wichita, said if the amendment was such a 
pressing need, the measure ought to be on the August 2022 ballot,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/briefs/attorney-general-seeks-abortion-appeal-delay-until-after-constitutional-amendment-vote/">alongside the Value Them Both Amendment</a>.

When an amendment to do just that failed, Carmichael asked to push the vote back until after the gubernatorial election.

“In the event Derek Schmidt should be our governor, people can decide
 whether or not they want to do to Derek Schmidt what this is designed 
to do to Laura Kelly, because it’s bad legislation,” Carmichael told 
House Democrats in a meeting before the debate.

Other amendments offered by Democrats during the deliberation also 
fell short, including a revision to allow the governor the authority to 
veto a revocation, subject to a supermajority vote from the Legislature 
to override.

House minority leader Tom Sawyer and Rep. Jason Probst, who earlier 
this year offered constitutional amendments to expand Medicaid and 
legalize Marijuana, again proposed to let Kansas voters decide on these 
hot-button issues.

The House Rules Committee ruled the amendments not germane to the resolution, promptly rejecting them.

“There are some other things I think people care about quite a bit,” 
Probst, a Hutchinson Democrat, said. “We’ve demonstrated to an excessive
 degree this year that we enjoy the opportunity to allow Kansans to vote
 on things.”

Daytona International Speedway is back to full capacity a year after the pandemic roughly limited attendance to 30,000 fans. Daytona should expect about 100,000 fans on Sunday. 

Adkins has sold more than 11 million albums over a 25-year career and is a multi-time Grammy nominee. Woodson will give the command for drivers to start their engines.

Fullbright got his start at the legendary Blue Door listening room in Oklahoma City. It was there that he recorded a live album and found his base, opening for many other writers including fellow Oklahomans Kevin Welch and Jimmy Webb. His 2012 studio debut, From the Ground Up, received a Grammy nomination for Americana Album of the Year, and later that year he won ASCAP’s Harold Adamson Award for lyric writing. In 2014, John released the critically acclaimed Songs, toured all over America and the UK, and appeared on Late Night with David Letterman.

“What’s so bad about happy?” Fullbright sings on the opening track of his new album, Songs. It’s a play on the writer’s curse, the notion that new material can only come through heartbreak or depression, that great art is only born from suffering.

“A normal person, if they find themselves in a position of turmoil or grief, they’ll say, ‘I need to get out of this as fast as I can,’” said Fullbright. “A writer will say, ‘How long can I stay in this until I get something good?’”

MANHATTAN —Monday opens the next chapter in university leadership. at K-State. The university welcomes new President Richard and First Lady Sally Linton and family to Manhattan.

&nbsp;On December 2, The Kansas Board of Regents selected Richard Linton&nbsp; as the 15th president of K-State. Linton was the dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. "I am honored to take on the role of president of Kansas State University," Linton said. "The university is on an exciting trajectory, and its community has a contagious passion, culture and connectivity. I'm energized to help K-State forward and build on this positive momentum.” Linton is strongly connected to land-grant institutions, which is one of the reasons why he applied to become the president of K-State. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology, master's degree in food science and doctorate in food science from Virginia Tech. From 1994-2011, he was a food science faculty member, director — and founder — of the Center for Food Safety Engineering and associate director of agricultural research programs at Purdue University. He served as department chair of food science and technology at The Ohio State University from 2011-2012 before accepting his current position with NC State. During his 27-year career, Linton has published over 60 referred journal articles, 11 textbooks, and over 75 Extension publications. He has also presented over 250 invited talks at state, national, and international meetings and has received more than $15 million in research funding. &nbsp;Linton said he plans to spend his first few weeks on campus listening and learning. "I will be spending a lot of my early time getting to know all of you both on campus and off campus, and listening and learning about the Kansas State culture and your programmatic direction," Linton said. "I want to know your aspirations and your dreams for the future, and I want to help find pathways to get there. I can't wait to be your president, and go Cats!" Linton and his wife, Sally, are parents of two: Lily, a senior in high school, and Chris, a sophomore in high school.

K-State opens the next chapter in university leadership

On my show, I often take calls from people in sexless marriages, people struggling with attraction after their partner’s weight gain, or people who don’t like who they are in their relationship. I talk to couples who are exhausted, frustrated, bored—and even people who are doing well, but they’re flinching, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

You see, most of us were only taught how to fall in love the first time—back when we had six-pack abs and endless energy. But relationships are all about falling in love with each other repeatedly over the course of a lifetime. We don’t know how to stay strong through decades of big transformations and small, daily transitions, which is where things usually start to break down. The key to remaining connected is this: Instead of staying stuck in the past, commit together to build something new.

Why? Because over time, everything in your relationship will change. Everything. Things won’t feel the way they used to. There’s no such thing as getting back to how things were. And using the past as a barometer for how your relationship should look is going to fail. You must intentionally embrace each new season of life. Think of yourself as an architect, not an archeologist.

So, if the key to keeping your relationship strong is to build something new, how does that work? I’m not a fan of three-step plans or life formulas, but in this case, it makes sense. If you want to strengthen your relationship and cocreate a future you love, here are three simple steps to start the process:

1. Acknowledge what is.&nbsp;You must step out of denial and confront reality. That means being vulnerable and saying things like, “I miss how we used to flirt,” or “I feel like your job has become more important than me.” If the thought of saying those things makes you feel sick, that’s normal. Being vulnerable requires risk, but it’s the only way forward.

I have two pieces of advice here. First, don’t try to have this conversation when you’re in a fight or when you’re angry. Confronting reality should never be an attack, and vulnerability should never be weaponized. Second, when someone is being vulnerable, you have to say, “Thank you for sharing.” No rebuttals. No excuses. No sulking. This is the time to listen quietly and let the other person speak—not to find a way to win the discussion. Remember: You’re on the same team.

2. Grieve what was.&nbsp;We often think grief is a big event—like the sudden loss of a loved one or job. But grief is so much more than a big event. Grief is the gap between what you expected or hoped would happen and what actually happened. It’s the heartache you feel when you miss how things were. It’s the fear you feel about beginning the next chapter.

Some grief is bigger than others. But if you want your relationships to survive the thousands of changes life will throw at you, you must grieve what was—even if the new things aren’t bad. Maybe you loved going to concerts together, but now you’re in bed by nine every night. Maybe you never thought they’d develop a chronic illness, but it happened, and it’s devastating. Grieving isn’t going to be fun, but it’s necessary to honor what was. You have to choose to set it down so you can pick up what’s next together.

3. Own what happens next.&nbsp;Now that you’ve both said, “Here’s what I miss,” and “Here’s what I thought was going to happen and didn’t,” you get to say, “Here’s what happens next!” You can’t edit the stories of the past, but you can write new ones.

Maybe you can’t go to late night concerts anymore, but you love going on hikes with your family. Or no, he can’t help around the house the way he did before the illness, but you’re learning new ways to serve one another.” Whatever it looks like, take heart: This is when you regain your power and your strength.

Be patient with one another in this process.&nbsp;No one told you when you got married that it was the just the first of a hundred phases of building something new. Yes, it’s hard, but every minute of the work it takes to&nbsp;embrace change and build a strong relationship is worth it.

I talk to couples who are exhausted, frustrated, bored—and even people who are doing well, but they’re flinching, waiting for the other shoe to drop.You see, most of us were only taught how to fall in love the first time—back when we had six-pack abs and endless energy. But relationships are all about falling in love with each other repeatedly over the course of a lifetime. We don’t know how to stay strong through decades of big transformations and small, daily transitions, which is where things usually start to break down. The key to remaining connected is this: Instead of staying stuck in the past, commit together to build something new.Why? Because over time, everything in your relationship will change. Everything. Things won’t feel the way they used to. There’s no such thing as getting back to how things were. And using the past as a barometer for how your relationship should look is going to fail. You must intentionally embrace each new season of life. Think of yourself as an architect, not an archeologist.So, if the key to keeping your relationship strong is to build something new, how does that work? I’m not a fan of three-step plans or life formulas, but in this case, it makes sense. If you want to strengthen your relationship and cocreate a future you love, here are three simple steps to start the process:1. Acknowledge what is.&nbsp;You must step out of denial and confront reality. That means being vulnerable and saying things like, “I miss how we used to flirt,” or “I feel like your job has become more important than me.” If the thought of saying those things makes you feel sick, that’s normal. Being vulnerable requires risk, but it’s the only way forward.I have two pieces of advice here. First, don’t try to have this conversation when you’re in a fight or when you’re angry. Confronting reality should never be an attack, and vulnerability should never be weaponized. Second, when someone is being vulnerable, you have to say, “Thank you for sharing.” No rebuttals. No excuses. No sulking. This is the time to listen quietly and let the other person speak—not to find a way to win the discussion. Remember: You’re on the same team.2. Grieve what was.&nbsp;We often think grief is a big event—like the sudden loss of a loved one or job. But grief is so much more than a big event. Grief is the gap between what you expected or hoped would happen and what actually happened. It’s the heartache you feel when you miss how things were. It’s the fear you feel about beginning the next chapter.Some grief is bigger than others. But if you want your relationships to survive the thousands of changes life will throw at you, you must grieve what was—even if the new things aren’t bad. Maybe you loved going to concerts together, but now you’re in bed by nine every night. Maybe you never thought they’d develop a chronic illness, but it happened, and it’s devastating. Grieving isn’t going to be fun, but it’s necessary to honor what was. You have to choose to set it down so you can pick up what’s next together.3. Own what happens next.&nbsp;Now that you’ve both said, “Here’s what I miss,” and “Here’s what I thought was going to happen and didn’t,” you get to say, “Here’s what happens next!” You can’t edit the stories of the past, but you can write new ones.Maybe you can’t go to late night concerts anymore, but you love going on hikes with your family. Or no, he can’t help around the house the way he did before the illness, but you’re learning new ways to serve one another.” Whatever it looks like, take heart: This is when you regain your power and your strength.Be patient with one another in this process.&nbsp;No one told you when you got married that it was the just the first of a hundred phases of building something new. We have $15,000 in credit card debt. My husband works very hard, but only makes about $25,000 a year. We’re also living in a very old trailer right now, and I stay at home with our newborn. My dad told us he is willing to pay off our debt if we agree to get financial counseling together, and show that we are serious about doing better with our finances. What should we do?

I wouldn’t accept the money from your dad if it’s going to be a loan. If you really want to ruin family events, have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">debt</a>&nbsp;to your parents. It twists you up inside. And it’ll be especially hard on your husband. No matter what anyone else says, the borrower is&nbsp;always&nbsp;slave to the lender.

If it’s going to be a gift, meaning there’s no expectation of repayment, that’s a different story. Still, I think your dad has a great idea in making the debt payoff contingent on you two going to some kind of financial counseling, and making a proactive effort to change things, get out of debt and save money—for your child’s future&nbsp;and&nbsp;for yours. I’d probably do the same thing.

It doesn’t sound like you’re being crazy with your money, but it’s tough to provide for a family on that kind of income. If you want to go to work at some point when your baby is a little older, that’s fine. I completely understand the desire to be at home with a brand new baby. TOPEKA —Kansas legislators completed an override of Governor Laura Kelly's veto of a controversial congressional redistricting map.

On Wednesday afternoon, member of the Kansas House voted 85-37 to override the veto. The Senate vote Tuesday was 27-11 giving Republican leaders the two-thirds majority they needed.

The new map splits the state’s portion of the Kansas City area into two congressional districts, costing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-kansas-kansas-city-lawrence-topeka-7e616acdf227d7ce8356a821fda8ea76">Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids</a>&nbsp;some of the territory in her 3rd District.

The map also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/legislature-election-2020-kansas-city-kansas-donald-trump-85844d07388c25e71440059be29b7a6e">moves the liberal northeast Kansas community of Lawrence,</a>&nbsp;home to the main University of Kansas campus, from the 2nd District of eastern Kansas into the 1st District of central and western Kansas with conservative communities six or more hours away by car.

In a statement from her office when she issued the veto Governor Kelly stated, “The process of drawing districts each decade is the core to ensuring that all Kansans have the opportunity to participate in their government and have their voices heard. The courts and the Legislature have established case law and criteria on how to draw Kansas districts fairly and constitutionally.&nbsp; &nbsp;

🎥Kan. legislators kill governor's veto of congressional map

TOPEKA — Sen. Mark Steffen succeeded Tuesday in persuading 
Republicans on a health panel to advance legislation that would clear 
him from punishment by state regulators for prescribing ivermectin to 
COVID-19 patients.

The Hutchinson Republican and anesthesiologist <a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/01/26/kansas-senator-under-investigation-after-prescribing-ivermectin-for-covid-19-seeks-legal-cover/">revealed last month</a>
 he was under investigation by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts. He 
proposed legislation that would block the board from taking action 
against doctors who prescribe ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine for 
off-label uses.

Steffen amended and expanded the bill during committee action Tuesday
 to give doctors free range to use any drug for COVID-19 treatment and 
require pharmacists to fill the prescription, while removing protections
 for both doctors and pharmacists from civil liability if patients are 
harmed by the treatment. Lawmakers also added language from another of 
Steffen’s bills that would allow children to opt out of any kind of 
vaccine requirement at day care facilities and schools without being 
questioned.

The GOP-led panel then gutted a House bill that dealt with pharmacy 
regulations, inserted the Steffen bills and advanced it on a voice vote 
to the full Senate.

“We are moving a bill forward that decreases suffering and death,” 
Steffen told reporters after the hearing. “We’re moving a bill forward 
that allows the true standard of care in the early treatment of COVID to
 reign supreme. This notion that doing nothing is the standard of care 
is false, inappropriate and has led to crimes against humanity. The 
bottom line is we took a step forward in helping our Kansas citizens 
today and protecting our children.”

Steffen said he had not heard anything from the Board of Healing Arts
 since announcing Jan. 26 he had been under investigation for more than a
 year.

More than 40 people attended the standing-room-only hearing, in 
addition to journalists and legislative staff members. Many of the 
observers were affiliated with a prominent anti-vaccination group and 
held signs supporting <a target="_blank" href="http://kslegislature.com/li/b2021_22/measures/sb381/">Senate Bill 381</a>.

Sen. Cindy Holscher, D-Overland Park, said the committee provided 
little notice to opponents of Steffen’s bill, then justified moving 
forward because there was little opposition. She presented a stack of 
pages that represented “nearly half” of the complaints about the bill 
she has received in recent days.

“This is a very dangerous bill,” Holscher said. “It was dangerous before. It’s even more dangerous now with what’s been done.”

Sen. Richard Hilderbrand, a Galena Republican who serves as chairman 
of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, stopped Holscher from
 making further comments and accused her of misreading the bill.

“The crutch [sic] of the underlying bill was that the Board of 
Healing Arts were investigating doctors for prescribing off-label drugs,
 and the Board of Pharmacy was coming down on some pharmacists for 
filling off-label drugs in this case,” Hilderbrand said. “That is the 
crutch [sic]. There is nothing dubious or life-threatening in these 
bills.”

The two Democrats on the committee, Holscher and Sen. Pat Pettey, of 
Kansas City, and Republican Sen. Kristen O’Shea, of Topeka, objected to 
considering <a target="_blank" href="http://kslegislature.com/li/b2021_22/measures/sb398/">Senate Bill 398</a>, dealing with vaccination requirements, before holding a hearing on the matter.

The bill applies language passed during a special session in 
November, when the Legislature responded to federal vaccine requirements
 for workers, to expand the application of religious exemptions. The 
proposal makes it illegal for a school or day care facility to question 
the sincerity of a child’s religious beliefs.

“This is not just COVID-19 vaccine — it’s all childhood 
vaccinations,” O’Shea said. “And for us to not even have time to fully 
read the bill and be asked to vote on it is bad policy.”

Hilderbrand defended the process of combining two bills and inserting them into <a target="_blank" href="http://kslegislature.com/li/b2021_22/measures/hb2280/">House Bill 2280</a>.

“For those of you listening online that are getting an impression 
that this is something unique in committees, it is not,” Hilderbrand 
said. “This is something done every session. This just happens to be on 
this certain bill. So I don’t want you to be misled that this is 
something unique.”

Sen.
 Mike Thompson, R-Shawnee, said the legislation simply reaffirms 
religious rights already enshrined in the state constitution. He then 
repeated his false claims that vaccines are harmful and that COVID-19 
poses no threat to children.

“It gives parents discretion as to whether or not they want their kid
 to take a vaccine that is actually dangerous, and has been proven to be
 so,” Thompson said. “These kids are not at risk.”

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s latest summary of 
Kansas deaths attributed to COVID-19 included four fatalities among 
children 0-9 years of age and three fatalities among youth aged 10 to 
17.

Thompson also said it was important to “get these people these 
medicines and give these doctors the latitude they need, because this is
 the final nail in the coffin.”

Federal regulators and the vast majority of physicians agree there is
 no benefit to treating COVID-19 with ivermectin or hydroxychloroquine, 
and that the drugs could be harmful in some cases.

Pettey said the discussion demonstrated a need to hold a hearing on the religious exemption component.

“We are talking about vaccinations of our children, and we’re talking
 about the safety of all, and we’re not talking about religion,” Pettey 
said. “So I think it’s important that we keep it in the right context.”

From KSREMANHATTAN – In the workplace, the Golden Rule applies: Treat others as we would want them to treat us.&nbsp;But LaVerne Williamson says there’s more.&nbsp;“When we think about appreciation, it is something that drives connection in the workplace,” said Williamson, an employee relations and engagement specialist at Kansas State University. “When employees feel valued and respected, and their voices are being heard, they are able to engage more and have more enthusiasm for their work.”&nbsp;Williamson is a featured speaker in February’s lineup of the webinar series,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/fcs/livingwellwed" target="_blank">Living Well Wednesday</a>, hosted by K-State Research and Extension.&nbsp;Her talk – The Five Languages of Appreciation – is scheduled for Wednesday, followed by a Feb. 23 presentation on the MIND diet by K-State Research and Extension family and consumer science specialist Sharolyn Jackson.&nbsp;Both webinars are free and will air online from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/fcs/livingwellwed/" target="_blank">Participants must register online</a>&nbsp;to gain access to the webinars.&nbsp;While Williamson believes in the Golden Rule, she said one way to approach workplace relationships is to “treat others the way&nbsp;they&nbsp;want to be treated. That is so important.”&nbsp;Her presentation is modeled off the book, The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace, that focus on: ●Words of affirmation.&nbsp;This can be a word of encouragement when a co-worker is taking on a difficult project.●Quality time.&nbsp;This may be one-on-one meetings to discuss a task, or perhaps going out to lunch together.●Acts of service.&nbsp;This could be jumping in to help a co-worker with some part of a big project.●Tangible gifts.&nbsp;This could be bringing a&nbsp;&nbsp;muffin or cup of coffee to a co-worker in the morning, or something more simple like a written note.&nbsp; ●Physical touch.&nbsp;This means appropriate ways to show support, such as a fist bump, handshake, or pat on the back.&nbsp;“We all have different languages of appreciation and it’s really a matter of being engaged with each other and actively listening to what a colleague really needs from us,” Williamson said.&nbsp;She added that her presentation will not only help participants better understand their own language of appreciation, but also develop an understanding of how others around them view appreciation.&nbsp;“When people feel appreciated, they can come into the workplace and be their true selves,” Williamson said. “There is such a wide range of benefits you receive when people create a culture of what it really means to appreciate others in the workplace.”&nbsp;Jackson’s Feb. 23 talk combines positive aspects of two healthy eating plans – the Mediterranean diet and the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet.&nbsp;“There are components of both of those diets that are particularly helpful for the mind and brain,” Jackson said.&nbsp;The Mediterranean diet is characterized by foods high in antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and whole grains. The DASH diet encourages foods that are low in sodium while avoiding saturated fats and added sugars.&nbsp;Jackson and co-presenter Lori Wuellner – a family and consumer sciences agent in Wyandotte County – will present “Eat More” and “Avoid” lists of common foods. As an example, she said blueberries are considered a food that is beneficial to the brain. And for good health, humans should eat dark, leafy green vegetables every day.&nbsp;In addition to diet, Jackson said keys to good brain health include staying hydrated throughout the day, getting adequate sleep on a regular basis, and engaging in physical activity.&nbsp;More information on Living Well Wednesday&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/fcs/livingwellwed" target="_blank">is available online</a>&nbsp;or from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">local extension offices in Kansas</a>.
