“For everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven ….” Some recognize this phrase from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible and others know it from the popular 1960s song by the Byrds.

November is a season of Thanksgiving. Practicing gratitude and taking stock of all the blessings we have to be grateful for is the quickest and easiest way to actually become happier.

Gratitude was engrained early in our household. My parents are volunteer firefighters; my mom is an EMT. I grew up watching them sacrifice time in their lives by leaving the dinner table, basketball games, in the middle of the night or even from church to go save lives. Mom never shared names, but she often told us to be thankful because she saw inside the homes of kids we knew who didn’t have beds to sleep in or other things we took for granted.

When you start counting blessing, it’s like gathering a shirt from your closet or pictures of loved ones; seeing things in one place makes me realize how abundant good things are in my life. For me that richness makes it incredibly obvious I have an obligation to be giving and share that abundance with others. 

My church is currently in a season focused on giving and generosity in all areas of our lives. Giving and church in the same sentence probably leads you to expect a conversation about money and our pastor makes jokes each week about how disappointed we all will be to learn he’s not going to talk about money. Generosity is so much bigger than making financial contributions; it is the attitude of giving without expecting anything in return. Hospitality, volunteering, teaching, caring and sacrificing are some of the actions that come from generosity.

Years ago as an FFA member, I stayed with host families while traveling throughout the state. Stepping into the homes and lives of families was eye opening and humbling. I stayed in fancy houses and meager ones where my mother’s words about people who had less echoed in my mind. Customs and norms were different in each home but they all invited me into their lives and gave what they could to make me feel comfortable.

My most vivid memories of these stays were the kitchen tables. We often talked far too late into the evening or shared an early breakfast with the families filled with stories and learning about each other. People opened their homes and lives to make me feel welcome. I am still grateful for their kindness two decades later.

Most people will never have a host family experience because they are uncomfortable; instead of the hassle of inviting our neighbors over for dinner we meet at restaurants. Money is given instead of time because it is more convenient. There is nothing wrong with any of these things, but I worry that we are letting too many opportunities slip away where a greater connection and impact would come from us giving more of ourselves.

As you practice gratitude this month, look for opportunities to turn your thankfulness into giving that brings you closer to others. Instead of just thanking a veteran, learn about their experiences or find a way to show them a kindness. If you participate in Giving Tuesday, spread awareness by tell others why the charity is close to your heart. When you gather the family around the Thanksgiving table, find a way to give to something you all care about together.

This is a time to be grateful, and a time to give of yourself.

Saline County Jail Activity, Nov 3

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; a suspect on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just&nbsp;before 9 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy sheriff conducted a stop on a vehicle for an alleged traffic violation in the 1000 block of Parish Road in Great Bend, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

During the course the traffic stop, officers became suspicious of illegal drug activity and Sheriff’s Office K9 Maxx was deployed and indicated the presence of controlled substances.

Further investigation revealed a large quantity, approximately 1 pound, of suspected fentanyl. Methamphetamine, oxycodone as well as drug paraphernalia were also located inside the vehicle.

The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as 54-year-old Lisa Gomez of Sioux City, New Mexico. 

Gomez was arrested and transported the Barton County Jail without incident where she was booked on requested charges of distribution of fentanyl, possession of methamphetamine, distribution of marijuana, possession of prescription narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal transportation of alcohol. Gomez is being held in lieu of a $300,000 bond.

I am a PROUD graduate of Salina Central High.&nbsp; I work for the City of Salina as a Director of CT/CPI/Media.&nbsp; I am a husband and father of 3 graduates of USD 305 and have 5 grandchildren.&nbsp; I attend St. John's Missionary Baptist Church and love to spend time at home, fishing, and watching sports.&nbsp; My weekends are booked watching grandkids play sports.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize in order to improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of public school students in our community?

We must continue to meet the kids and parents where they are.&nbsp; We have a wide demographic of citizens and need to be able to address everyone's needs as much as possible.&nbsp; This puts a strain on our internal USD305 system due to resources, and is an overall challenge for our community.&nbsp; Ensuring that our kids are prepared to enter life after Highschool is paramount to the success of our City, State and Nation, because we are establishing the foundation that everything will be built on.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue? Books are a source of information.&nbsp; When information is shared/taught it becomes knowledge.&nbsp; We must be willing and able to teach each and every student to ensure that they have a solid foundation when they leave the walls of USD305.&nbsp; Parents play a part in this, and MUST train up their children before they come to USD305.&nbsp; Just because a book is on the shelf does not mean they have to read it.&nbsp; To my knowledge none of the books in question were required reading, and all of the books can be downloaded on a personal phone.&nbsp; The books are not the problem, but rather a&nbsp;symptom&nbsp;of a great problem.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents, citizens, and educators? Our Superintendent, as well as staff, go out of their way to engage the community, parents, and students.&nbsp; The only way anyone can say they are not involved is because they choose to not be involved.&nbsp; I am open to suggestions, but I believe that we should continue to do what is being done and evaluate and&nbsp;tweak&nbsp;the current actions as warranted to get the desired result.

Please explain why you are running for School Board: I am here to simply be a part of the solution and not second question&nbsp;everything&nbsp;that is done.&nbsp; I had questions when my kids were in school and playing sports, but never questioned the board because I was not part of the solution, and I knew they were doing their best.&nbsp; I think I bring a different perspective to the board.&nbsp; Football got me a scholarship and free education, but my education in USD305 allowed me to get the grades to keep my scholarship.&nbsp; I didn't get great grades (C-C+) in USD305, but did far better in College and have obtained two Master's degrees.&nbsp; I credit that to the strong education, I and my sister (who also has a Master's Degree) received from USD 305.&nbsp; I want to see those who come after me receive the same solid education that we received so that they are&nbsp;equipped&nbsp;to go out and make a positive impact on the world.

&nbsp;What is your profession? Retired from being a Registered Nurse in the Birth Center at Salina Regional where I spent my entire career

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I am a lifetime resident of Salina. I graduated from Sacred Heart and would have graduated from Marymount if they wouldn’t have closed, so I commuted to finish my last year at Bethel College in Newton. My Husband David and I have been living in the Ell-Saline school district for the last 27 years. Both of our daughters are Ell-Saline graduates and now we have one grandson at the gradeschool and the other is at the Middle School. Since retiring I have had the goal of giving back to my community. I am in the Child of God ministry through St Mary’s Church, my husband and I have become master gardeners. We were on the garden tour in 2022 and now I am co-chair of the garden tour committee for the 2024 tour. I am president of the Smoky Hills Audubon and I am on the board of Ell-Saline Cardinal Foundation.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community?

My priorities for improving educational outcomes is to give our students the tools they need to succeed. Be that if their goal is to graduate high school or to get a doctorate level education. I am a huge proponent of giving our students the strongest educational experience possible. So I am very proud that our district is able to update our science department in the middle school/ high school with new curriculum and facilities. I feel that this will be very beneficial in having the ability to do hands-on experiments that will reinforce what they are learning. Also updating curriculum in our other departments. Another important goal is to continue to increase our enrollment at our school.

I feel that the books in our libraries have been carefully chosen for our students and that we do not have an issue with this.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents and educators?

 I feel that our parents and community are the heart of our school. We have fantastic parents and alumni. They are involved in our community, some are even educators and staff at our school. That is one of the best things about Ell-Saline. We are family and care about every one of our students. Another thing that is a huge benefit to our district is the Brookville Community Foundation. They have goals of improving the community and with that the schools as well. They have donated the new scoreboard to our football field and have more plans to collaborate with us for more improvements to the district. 

With the scoreboard, we will be able to incorporate how to run the scoreboard into an educational opportunity for our students. The other thing that is fantastic about our district is the Cardinal Foundation. We have a once-a-year event where our community is very generous. 

With the funds that are raised we are able to award grants to our staff that directly improves the educational experience for our students. We have a great turn out for parent teacher conferences. We have done some adjusting to continue to improve this process and we will continue to evaluate how those changes are working. We have technology in place for there to be a direct link from parents to teachers to stay up on how things are going with our students, be that to see where their grades are at in real time to many of our elementary teachers sending pictures and videos of special activities. 

We have been focusing on updating our website so that parents and community are kept informed of what is going on in the district. I have a strong desire to continue to improve getting the communication from the district out to our parents.

Please explain why you are running for USD 307 school board:

 I have a strong desire to see our students succeed. Be that in getting good grades and excelling in State assessments to success in sports, any of our many clubs, supporting their fellow student body, or giving back to their community. But especially seeing them graduate and have the tools to be and do whatever their hearts desire. If I can have even a little hand in that then I feel that my job on the school board is a success.

Election 2023: Candidate for USD 307 School Board, Cheryl Higgins

Micole Marie Anderson (Kallman) was born on April 28, 1979, in Belleville, Kansas, to proud parents Jay and Lynell Kallman. She left this world on October 31, 2023, at the North Central Kansas Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Micole graduated from Belleville High School with the Class of 1997, and she spent her life dedicated to her family and her passions. She was a cherished wife to Devin Anderson of Concordia, Kansas, and a devoted mother to her daughters, Kennedy Anderson of Belleville, Kansas, and Justice Kennidy of Wahiawa, HI. Micole had a special bond with her sisters, Ashley Kallman of Bedminster, New Jersey, and Erin Kallman (Hank and Avree) of Belleville, Kansas; brother-in-law, Michael &amp; Sandy Anderson (Mattie &amp; Alexandria) of Appleton, Wisconsin and father in law, Elton “Andy” Anderson of Concordia, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Rosetta Anderson.

Micole's greatest joy in life was being a grandmother to her beloved grandsons, Ryker Hovater and Khai Anderson, both of Belleville, Kansas. She cherished every moment with them and could often be found sitting in her recliner, playing patty cake, and sharing precious smiles.

Micole had a creative spirit and a talent for crafting. She could turn any old item into a work of art with her imaginative touch. Her crafts were a reflection of her vibrant personality and her ability to find beauty in the simplest of things.

Micole will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her warm smile, creative spirit, unconditional love and load boisterous personality will be cherished forever.

A memorial service to celebrate Micole's life will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;Friends may sign the register book on Monday, November 6, 2023 from 1-8 pm and the family will greet friends from 6-8 pm at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to NCK CASA in Micole's honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family requests casual dress for the services and invites all to join them for fellowship and a meal at The Hudson Room at the Kallman Office Suites, 1806 M St., Belleville, KS 66935.

Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another “Jeans Day” fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of October. Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work.

 A total donation of $1,075 was presented to the Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots organization. The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.&nbsp;

Memorial Hospital is also an Abilene Area Toys 4 Tots drop-off location for new toys, games, books, and monetary donations through December 11th.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A man accused in a deadly Sunday morning shooting outside a Wichita nightclub made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Terrence Johnson, 33 of Wichita, is charged with 1st degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery, criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and a misdemeanor count of battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Police reported the arrest just before 1p.m. Tuesday. Police have not reported details on the arrest.&nbsp;

At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police were monitoring at Onyx, 10001 E. Kellogg in Wichita, when they heard multiple gunshots, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

First responders located 23-year-old Jaylon Pete of Wichita in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. EMS transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Two other individuals, a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old man both of Wichita, were struck by gunfire during the shooting.&nbsp;They were transported to local area hospitals for treatment of serious non-life threatening injuries.

Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that&nbsp; Johnson was involved in a disturbance inside the club, according to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses during a Monday news conference. Johnson went outside to get a handgun and attempted to re-enter the club. but was unable to do so due to safety measured implemented by the club management.

Through extensive investigation and tips from the public, police have probable cause to believe Johnson was the shooter Sunday morning, according to Lt. Moses.&nbsp;

Less than thirty minutes after the deadly shooting, police responded to a domestic violence call in the 1700 Block of North Pinecrest in Wichita. During the investigation of the call, officers arrested Johnson for alleged misdemeanor criminal damage to property.  Police had no information at that time Johnson was a suspect in the deadly nightclub shooting.

At 2:16a.m., officers booked Johnson into the Sedgwick County Jail for the criminal damage case and he bonded out just after 3:30a.m., according to online jail records. Police didn't identify him as a suspect in the nightclub killing until afternoon Sunday.&nbsp; &nbsp;They arrested him again late Tuesday morning, according to Gupilan.&nbsp;

He remains jailed on bond of one-million-500-thousand dollars, according to the district attorney's office.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 501 officials are investigating an alleged school threat against a Kansas high school.

Just after 11p.m. Monday, the&nbsp;USD 501 Topeka Public Schools Police Department notified investigators from the Topeka Police Department&nbsp; of a threat made about a school shooting at Topeka West High School. 

Investigators were quick to identify and locate a 15-year-old who made the threat. Police arrested the girl&nbsp;and booked her into the Juvenile Detention Center on requested charges of Aggravated Criminal Threat.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As part of the Dillon Lecture Series at Hutchinson Community College, Dr. Temple Grandin spoke Tuesday about different kinds of thinkers.

"I've got a new book, Visual Thinking, I've got a couple of copies with me," Grandin said. "The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions. Research shows, there's people like me that are object visualizers. Everything I think about's a picture. It's not words. My kind of mind is good at art, skilled trades, mechanical, all kinds of mechanical things, photography and working with animals. Animals don't think in words. The thing that my kind of mind is terrible at is algebra. You need us. If you want to have the infrastructure keep working? Let me tell you, you need us non-mathematicians. Then, when you go back to the food processing plant, my kind of mind makes all the mechanical equipment, but we need the mathematicians for boilers and refrigerations. I noticed you had a boiler factory here in town. You need both kinds of minds and you have your more mathematical, pattern thinker. Your pattern thinkers, music and math go together. In the visual thinking, art and mechanics go together. I know it sounds crazy, but, it's true. I write about it in my book."

Grandin said a lot of people are mixtures of the different kinds of thinking.

"When a kid gets a label, you tend to have, autism, dyslexia, ADHD, whatever, they tend to be much more uneven in skills," Grandin said. "An extreme object visualizer or an extreme mathematician. The verbal thinkers, one of the things they tend to do is over generalize. You have this big concept, like inclusive classroom, let's just say that. My mind thinks more bottom up. What are things I can do to make a classroom inclusive? Get bullying under control. Get rid of LED lights that flicker. Some of the people with head injuries, dyslexia and some other conditions have problems with the flicker of flourescent lights. You can find it with slow motion video on your phone. The other thing is, I have a very bad working memory. I do not remember long lists of verbal information. Tests that have a sequence, let me have a pilot's checklist."

Grandin did note that it is harder for people who think visually to succeed in traditional academics.

"The next Temple Grandin is getting screened out by the algebra requirement," Grandin said. "I am not kidding. I've talked to students who want to become veterinary nurses on their third algebra class. How about geometry? How about statistics, or maybe accounting, or maybe business math, practical math, like a shop. That's keeping a lot of them out, but you need us."

Grandin's latest book is a New York Times best-seller.

Kellogg in Wichita, when they heard multiple gunshots, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.First responders located 23-year-old Jaylon Pete of Wichita in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. EMS transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.Two other individuals, a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old man both of Wichita, were struck by gunfire during the shooting.&nbsp;They were transported to local area hospitals for treatment of serious non-life threatening injuries.<figure>

 </figure>Preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation suggest that the suspect now identified as Johnson was involved in a disturbance inside the club, according to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses during a Monday news conference. Johnson went outside to get a handgun and attempted to re-enter the club. but was unable to do so due to safety measured implemented by the club management.Through extensive investigation and tips from the public, police have probable cause to believe Johnson was the shooter Sunday morning, according to Lt. Moses.&nbsp;Less than thirty minutes after the deadly shooting, police responded to a domestic violence call in the 1700 Block of North Pinecrest in Wichita. During the investigation of the call, officers arrested Johnson for alleged misdemeanor criminal damage to property. Police had no information at that time Johnson was a suspect in the deadly nightclub shooting.At 2:16a.m., officers booked Johnson into the Sedgwick County Jail for the criminal damage case and he bonded out just after 3:30a.m., according to online jail records. Police didn't identify him as a suspect in the nightclub killing until afternoon Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;The facts of this case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for formal charging consideration.

I have worked with youth and families at the same Salina church for 27 years. My husband and I have 2 sons who attend Ell-Saline Middle/High School. In our spare time, we work on the family farm west of Salina.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community?

- Promote a culture of collaboration and respect between the school board, administration, teachers, and support staff.

- Ensure a welcoming, safe, and supportive school environment

- Emphasize the importance of a balanced education &amp; extracurricular activities

- Continue conversations to build upon our college and career readiness program for high school students.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue?

Parents play a crucial role in guiding their children's reading choices. School libraries should maintain diverse and age-appropriate books so that children have access to materials that align with their families’ values and beliefs.

Effective collaboration is essential when it comes to implementing strategies within any organization. I would work together with my fellow board members to develop a comprehensive communication plan that includes both internal and external stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers, and the broader community.

I have a passion for public education and am an advocate for all students. I believe it is important to provide accessible, quality education and ensure that young people have the resources and support they need to succeed. Empowering our students with education not only benefits them as individuals but also has a ripple effect, positively impacting families, communities, and societies as a whole. I believe my experience and knowledge would be a valuable asset for the Ell-Saline school district.

I am currently the owner and instructor of Central Kansas ISR and I live in Saline County with my husband and son.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize or improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of students in our community? I would work alongside my fellow board members to improve education initiatives that are essential to the functions and daily operations of the public school system. Focusing on a high-quality education for all students in the district, working to improve teacher retention and recruitment, and all other important issues will be essential to our work on the school board. I will work with other elected school board members to make decisions that are student focused.

I am an advocate for literacy that offers a well-rounded education. However, I believe there are more important issues to discuss regarding improving rural education opportunities in USD 307. I will always be open to dialogue that improves the quality of our literacy education.

Open communication is important for all individuals in a school community. I will continue to encourage parents and teachers to keep an open line of communication to discuss celebrations, concerns, and suggestions for improvement.
