COWLEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a registered sex offender on new allegations after an arrest.

Just before 10:30p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the 1200 block of West Oklahoma Avenue in Arkansas City following a report of a physical disturbance involving a stabbing, according to a media release.

First responders officers located a 40-year-old female victim suffering from multiple stab wounds, including injuries to her neck.&nbsp; Arkansas City Fire/EMS provided immediate treatment at the scene before transporting the victim to South Central Medical Center. She was subsequently airlifted to a Wichita medical facility for further treatment and is currently reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect, Sean Michael Boydston, 54, Arkansas City, was inside a nearby residence. Officers established probable cause and arrested Boydston without incident. Investigators have determined that the suspect and victim are in a domestic relationship.

Boydston was booked into the Cowley County Jail on requested charges of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and Domestic Battery. He has previous convictions for&nbsp;Aggravated criminal sodomy with a child and&nbsp;Aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the KBI Offender registry.

He is being held on a bond of $100,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas sex offender accused of violent attack on a woman

Robert “Coach” Baumann, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at the NCK Medical Center, Concordia, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on July 2, 1941 in Oceanside, NY to Harry Howard &amp; Elise “Doris” (Rohmann) Baumann, II.

He graduated from Oceanside High School in 1959.&nbsp;&nbsp;He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (Emporia State University) in 1962 with a double major in History and Physical Education.&nbsp;&nbsp;He later earned his master’s degree in P.E. and counseling in 1973.

He taught social science and physical education and coached at Hartford High School for 5 years until Harold Clark recruited him to Concordia High School in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;He spent 37 years as the head track coach, 17 years as the cross-country coach and 10 years as an assistant and head football coach.&nbsp;&nbsp;He taught social science and physical education in Concordia and served as activities and athletic director for 5 years.

His track teams won 4 state championships, 16 regional championships, 28 NCKL titles and counts over 100 individual state champions.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2005 he returned to coaching at Pike Valley High School as an assistant track coach for another 16 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to coaching, Bob was a longtime wrestling official for over 27 years, officiating several state championships.&nbsp;&nbsp;He also served as a KSHSAA area supervisor for wrestling for 20 plus years.

He was a lifetime member of the NEA, a member of the KNEA, Kansas Track Coaches, Kansas Coaches Association &amp; the United State Track and Field Coaches Association.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bob was selected by the United States Olympic Committee as one of the coaches to attend the Learn by Doing Camps in 1970, 1972 and 1974.&nbsp;&nbsp;Additionally, was 1 of 10 coaches to attend the elite javelin camp at the Olmypic Training Center in 1990.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was honored in 1993 as the NFIOA Outstanding Official and named the Kansas Wrestling Official of the Year in 1979-1980.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was recognized by the Kansas Coaches Association in 2003.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bob also served at the Concordia City Recreation director for 25 years and was responsible for the design and building of the new sports complex in Concordia.

He married Gwendolyn “Betsy” Hancock on June 10, 1961 in Woodmere, Long Island, NY.&nbsp;&nbsp;She preceded him on September 9, 2007.

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a domestic incident and have made an arrest.

Just after 3:30p.m. Sunday, police&nbsp;were dispatched to a domestic disturbance at an address in the 3300 block of Forest Avenue in Great Bend, according to a media release.&nbsp; While on scene, officers contacted a woman and three juveniles.

Officers were advised that the woman and John Feemster, age 34,&nbsp; had been arguing. Officers were advised that during the argument, the woman was allegedly battered by Feemster and that he had obtained a weapon and forced the woman and children into a bedroom.

Feemster was contacted outside of the residence and was arrested. He was transported to the Barton County jail and booked on requested charges of of kidnapping, aggravated assault and endangering a child, in lieu of bond. Police did not report the relationship between Feemster and the victim.

SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan.—Law enforcement are investigating alleged sex crimes and have a suspect in custody.

On Jan. 23, following an investigation into a possible child sex crimes, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division served a search warrant in the 4400 block of SW 61st Street in response to a report that had been filed regarding sexual crimes against a minor, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Joseph G. Pittman, 41, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges Sexual exploitation of a child; possess media of a child, Sexual exploitation of a child; promote performance, Aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, Aggravated indecent liberties with a child, Intimidation of a witness or victim,&nbsp;Aggravated criminal sodomy and Rape.

Kansas man accused of multiple sex crimes involving a child

She hears a sound that breaks her focus. Was that a cough? Will her mask protect her?

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-vaccine-variant-omicron-deaths-wuhan-lab-1ae8a7b3e6e034e03722f17e7aad34cb">COVID-19 remains</a>&nbsp;a very present threat for the 55-year-old. Scarbro has multiple immune disorders, making her vulnerable to infection.

“Any minute anybody could cough, just incidentally,” said Scarbro, who lives in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. “And that cough could be the one thing that could make me sick.”

This month marks the fifth anniversary of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S. The virus would go on to kill 1.2 million Americans and disrupt countless lives.

While the pandemic’s emergency phase ended in May 2023, the threat of infection remains a governing force in the lives of people like Scarbro. They protect themselves from the virus with masks and isolate themselves in small family bubbles. Some grasp for unproven strategies — gargling with antiseptic mouthwash, carrying a personal carbon dioxide monitor to check the ventilation of indoor spaces.

In online support groups, they trade research about the danger of repeat infections and cognitive impairment. They miss the empathy they felt during the early days of the pandemic. Some have lost friendships, but they strive to maintain the social ties that are important to mental health.

Scarbro’s bowling league helps her feel connected to her neighbors. But recently, she’s detected more stares and skeptical looks from strangers when she bowls in a mask.

“There was more respect and understanding, but now they’re over it,” she said. “They expect me to be over it, but they don’t understand that even before COVID-19, these were the precautions I needed to take.”

Most Americans have developed some level of protection against severe disease from previous COVID-19 infections, vaccinations or both. But immunocompromised people like Scarbro, who has common variable immune deficiency, must be constantly vigilant. Unlike the flu, COVID has not settled into a seasonal pattern.

“There’s never a time when they can relax a little bit,” said Andrew Pekosz, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University. “That’s a really challenging and exhausting thing to ask someone to do.”

Who are the people still cautious about COVID-19? They include young caregivers of vulnerable relatives, people with chronic health conditions and families rallying around a loved one. In interviews with The Associated Press, they talked about how they manage the trade-offs and the toll of isolation on their mental health.

Before the pandemic, Bazia Zebrowski, 61, of Newbury, Ohio, dined out, shopped for groceries and took her dog, Shadoh, to the park. When she felt well, she occasionally could get together with friends despite having myalgic encephalomyelitis, a condition formerly known as chronic fatigue syndrome that causes inflammation, immune system problems, fatigue and pain.

Now she keeps close to home, venturing out only for medical appointments. Her husband does the shopping and wears a mask at his workplace.

They have not had COVID-19 and hope their luck holds. Getting sick would be a disaster, she said, potentially triggering a relapse or superimposing long COVID-19 onto her illness.

“I don’t consider myself COVID cautious. I consider myself COVID competent,” Zebrowski said. “Cautious would imply that I have an unreasonable fear of something. I do not have an unreasonable fear of this disease.”

What does Zebrowski miss about pre-pandemic times? “I miss the illusion that people are willing to care for each other,” she said. “How hard is it to put a mask on? It rattles your faith in humankind … (you learn) how little the people in your life understood how sick you were to begin with.”

Trauma is part of the experience of having a chronic illness, said DePaul University psychologist Leonard Jason, who has studied myalgic encephalomyelitis for more than three decades.

“Then you’re traumatized by the societal reaction to the illness,” he said.

Some people aren’t sick themselves but are taking precautions to protect a family member. Steve Alejandro, 42, of Wentzville, Missouri, calls himself a COVID shielder.

His wife, Ashley Alejandro, 44, also has myalgic encephalomyelitis. “She’s got maybe four good hours a day,” Alejandro said. “There’s not a thing in the world I wouldn’t do to protect those four hours.”

Alejandro changed careers during the pandemic, leaving behind “my whole support system” so he could sell vintage books online from home. His three children — now 20, 18 and 12 — never went back to in-person school after lockdowns ended and are continuing their learning at home.

“We’ve really come together,” Alejandro said. “This is a choice that can be made and you can win at it.”

In Miami, Kira Levin is the primary caregiver for her 98-year-old grandmother. She said the thought of getting COVID-19 and risking her grandmother’s health is terrifying.

So, at a July wedding, the 29-year-old was the only bridesmaid and attendee in a mask — an N95 layered with a pretty mask to match the bride’s green color scheme.

“I didn’t take off the mask for pictures and nobody asked me to,” Levin said. “And I felt incredibly grateful for that.”

Denver-based sisters Jacqueline and Alexa Child stay masked while going to concerts and dining outdoors with friends who don’t share the same level of COVID-19 caution.

“We have done everything we possibly could to maintain our mental health and our social life,” said Jacqueline, who has an immune disease that makes her vulnerable to infections. “There’s nothing worse than being disabled and isolated. As someone who has been disabled and isolated, I don’t want that isolation part.”

Jacqueline, 30, and her sister Alexa, 34, launched a dating app called Dateability in 2022 for people who are disabled or chronically ill, though all are welcomed. Users can add a “COVID Cautious” tag to their profiles to signal they’re interested in meeting others who take precautions. The Child sisters say 10% of their 30,000 users add “COVID Cautious” to their dating profiles.

“It’s a market that we didn’t expect to target but we happily accept,” Jacqueline said.

Alexa said the precautions started as a way to protect Jacqueline, “but they’re no longer about that.” She’s trying to avoid long COVID, a long-term disability.

Tossing aside the threat of long COVID is hard to imagine for Yale University immunologist Akiko Iwasaki. Though people have been studying the virus since its emergence, she said scientists still don’t know how pieces of the virus can stick around in the blood of some people for more than a year after they’ve recovered from the illness.

Iwasaki still wears masks indoors and stays up to date with vaccines.

“I just can’t afford to get sick and become chronically ill,” she said. “I feel that we really are in a position to be able to better understand the disease, to help millions of people.”

While Scarbro understands that others are ready to return to “normal,” it’s not that easy for her or her family. It’s true for many others with chronic immune illnesses, said Jorey Berry, CEO of Immune Deficiency Foundation.

“While the rest of the world is able to kind of go back to their regular lives, our community doesn’t have that luxury,” she said.

Scarbro, her husband and children are constantly taking into account other people’s COVID-19 safety practices.

And as the world turns back to pre-COVID life, Scarbro’s family is doing what they can to keep her healthy — but not in complete isolation.

“I feel very scared about the future,” she said. “I know that people are done, and I respect that, but it’s only going to make it harder for me and my family to keep me safe.”

Scarbro has multiple immune disorders, making her vulnerable to infection.“Any minute anybody could cough, just incidentally,” said Scarbro, who lives in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. “And that cough could be the one thing that could make me sick.”This month marks the fifth anniversary of the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S. The virus would go on to kill 1.2 million Americans and disrupt countless lives.While the pandemic’s emergency phase ended in May 2023, the threat of infection remains a governing force in the lives of people like Scarbro. They protect themselves from the virus with masks and isolate themselves in small family bubbles. Some grasp for unproven strategies — gargling with antiseptic mouthwash, carrying a personal carbon dioxide monitor to check the ventilation of indoor spaces.In online support groups, they trade research about the danger of repeat infections and cognitive impairment. They miss the empathy they felt during the early days of the pandemic. Some have lost friendships, but they strive to maintain the social ties that are important to mental health.Scarbro’s bowling league helps her feel connected to her neighbors. But recently, she’s detected more stares and skeptical looks from strangers when she bowls in a mask.“There was more respect and understanding, but now they’re over it,” she said. “They expect me to be over it, but they don’t understand that even before COVID-19, these were the precautions I needed to take.”Most Americans have developed some level of protection against severe disease from previous COVID-19 infections, vaccinations or both. But immunocompromised people like Scarbro, who has common variable immune deficiency, must be constantly vigilant. Unlike the flu, COVID has not settled into a seasonal pattern.“There’s never a time when they can relax a little bit,” said Andrew Pekosz, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University. “That’s a really challenging and exhausting thing to ask someone to do.”Who are the people still cautious about COVID-19? They include young caregivers of vulnerable relatives, people with chronic health conditions and families rallying around a loved one. In interviews with The Associated Press, they talked about how they manage the trade-offs and the toll of isolation on their mental health.<h2>‘How hard is it to put a mask on?’</h2>Before the pandemic, Bazia Zebrowski, 61, of Newbury, Ohio, dined out, shopped for groceries and took her dog, Shadoh, to the park. When she felt well, she occasionally could get together with friends despite having myalgic encephalomyelitis, a condition formerly known as chronic fatigue syndrome that causes inflammation, immune system problems, fatigue and pain.Now she keeps close to home, venturing out only for medical appointments. Her husband does the shopping and wears a mask at his workplace.They have not had COVID-19 and hope their luck holds. Getting sick would be a disaster, she said, potentially triggering a relapse or superimposing long COVID-19 onto her illness.“I don’t consider myself COVID cautious. I consider myself COVID competent,” Zebrowski said. “Cautious would imply that I have an unreasonable fear of something. I do not have an unreasonable fear of this disease.”What does Zebrowski miss about pre-pandemic times? “I miss the illusion that people are willing to care for each other,” she said. “How hard is it to put a mask on? It rattles your faith in humankind … (you learn) how little the people in your life understood how sick you were to begin with.”Trauma is part of the experience of having a chronic illness, said DePaul University psychologist Leonard Jason, who has studied myalgic encephalomyelitis for more than three decades.“Then you’re traumatized by the societal reaction to the illness,” he said.<h2>Protecting a partner</h2>Some people aren’t sick themselves but are taking precautions to protect a family member. Steve Alejandro, 42, of Wentzville, Missouri, calls himself a COVID shielder.His wife, Ashley Alejandro, 44, also has myalgic encephalomyelitis. “She’s got maybe four good hours a day,” Alejandro said. “There’s not a thing in the world I wouldn’t do to protect those four hours.”Alejandro changed careers during the pandemic, leaving behind “my whole support system” so he could sell vintage books online from home. His three children — now 20, 18 and 12 — never went back to in-person school after lockdowns ended and are continuing their learning at home.“We’ve really come together,” Alejandro said. “This is a choice that can be made and you can win at it.”In Miami, Kira Levin is the primary caregiver for her 98-year-old grandmother. She said the thought of getting COVID-19 and risking her grandmother’s health is terrifying.So, at a July wedding, the 29-year-old was the only bridesmaid and attendee in a mask — an N95 layered with a pretty mask to match the bride’s green color scheme.“I didn’t take off the mask for pictures and nobody asked me to,” Levin said. “And I felt incredibly grateful for that.”<h2>‘COVID Cautious’ dating</h2>Denver-based sisters Jacqueline and Alexa Child stay masked while going to concerts and dining outdoors with friends who don’t share the same level of COVID-19 caution.“We have done everything we possibly could to maintain our mental health and our social life,” said Jacqueline, who has an immune disease that makes her vulnerable to infections. “There’s nothing worse than being disabled and isolated. As someone who has been disabled and isolated, I don’t want that isolation part.”Jacqueline, 30, and her sister Alexa, 34, launched a dating app called Dateability in 2022 for people who are disabled or chronically ill, though all are welcomed. Users can add a “COVID Cautious” tag to their profiles to signal they’re interested in meeting others who take precautions. The Child sisters say 10% of their 30,000 users add “COVID Cautious” to their dating profiles.“It’s a market that we didn’t expect to target but we happily accept,” Jacqueline said.Alexa said the precautions started as a way to protect Jacqueline, “but they’re no longer about that.” She’s trying to avoid long COVID, a long-term disability.Tossing aside the threat of long COVID is hard to imagine for Yale University immunologist Akiko Iwasaki. Though people have been studying the virus since its emergence, she said scientists still don’t know how pieces of the virus can stick around in the blood of some people for more than a year after they’ve recovered from the illness.Iwasaki still wears masks indoors and stays up to date with vaccines.“I just can’t afford to get sick and become chronically ill,” she said. “I feel that we really are in a position to be able to better understand the disease, to help millions of people.”<h2>A new normal</h2>While Scarbro understands that others are ready to return to “normal,” it’s not that easy for her or her family. Saline County Jail Bookings, Jan. 26

KANSAS CITY—A suspect is alive and facing multiple charges after an arrest last week in Clay County, Missouri.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Jan. 22, sheriff deputies spotted a stolen vehicle in the Liberty Triangle northeast of Kansas City, according to a media release from the Clay County Sheriff.

 Due to the time of day and traffic, deputies kept an eye on the vehicle but did not pursue it while other law enforcement moved into the area with Stop Sticks. 

The driver spotted the deputy and took off. Missouri State Highway Patrol began pursuit, and the vehicle crashed at 152 Highway and Shoal Creek Parkway. No other cars were involved. The driver then ran into the woods. 

The Kansas City Missouri Police Department's helicopter helped deputies locate and arrest the suspect. Once he was in a deputy's vehicle to be taken to jail, he began to slump over and said he thought he was overdosing. 

He was going in and out of consciousness. The deputy immediately pulled over and administered Narcan, the opioid antidote, and asked for an ambulance. 

The suspect regained consciousness on scene. The suspect was transported to the hospital to be checked out before being booked into the Clay County Detention Center. 

Jorge A. Fraire, Jr., has been charged with aggravated fleeing from a stop, tampering with a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held on a $75,000 bond.&nbsp; "He lived to face these consequences." The sheriff's office stated.

SIT 2025 Schedule and Results

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate confirmed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kristi-noem">Kristi Noem</a>&nbsp;as homeland security secretary on Saturday, putting the South Dakota governor in charge of a sprawling agency that is essential to national security and President Donald Trump's plans to clamp down on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-trump-border-migrants-immigration-enforcement-a24389b7fd7875ef98b4ab45c14e8418">illegal immigration</a>.

Republicans kept the Senate working Saturday to install the latest member of Trump's national security team on a 59-34 vote. Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran was among seven&nbsp; Senators who missed the vote including Wyden and Merkley of Oregon, Warnock of Georgia, Smith of Minnesota, Schatz of Hawaii and King of Maine, according to the online report from the U.S. Senate.

Defense Secretary&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cia-director-ratcliffe-trump-cabinet-national-intelligence-a73ceaef42086d46a728979189a9826b">Pete Hegseth</a>&nbsp;was also confirmed in a dramatic tie-breaking vote Friday night, joining Secretary of State&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/marco-rubio">Marco Rubio</a>&nbsp;and CIA Director&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cia-director-ratcliffe-trump-cabinet-national-intelligence-a73ceaef42086d46a728979189a9826b">John Ratcliffe</a>. The Senate will next vote Monday evening on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/treasury-election-scott-bessent-trump-e4df1ef61309ee78f2affc2d9eabeff1">Scott Bessent's</a>&nbsp;confirmation as treasury secretary.

Noem, a Trump ally who is in her second term as governor, received 7 votes from Democrats. Republicans, who already held the votes necessary to confirm her, have expressed confidence in her determination to lead border security and immigration enforcement.

On social media, Noem thanked Trump for “the confidence in me to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security.”

She added, “I will work to make America SAFE again!”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Friday, “Fixing this crisis and restoring respect for the rule of law is one of President Trump and Republicans’ top priorities. And it’s going to require a decisive and committed leader at the Department of Homeland Security."

Democrats are split on how to handle border enforcement and immigration under Trump, with some warming to his hard-line stand.

Still, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York, as well as most other Democrats, voted against Noem. He pointed to “bipartisan solutions to fix the mess at our border," adding that Noem “seems headed in the wrong direction.”

The homeland security secretary oversees U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Citizenship and Immigration Services. Beyond those agencies, the department is also responsible for securing airline transportation, protecting dignitaries, responding to natural disasters and more.

Trump is planning major changes to how the department functions, including involving the military in immigration enforcement and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-fema-project-2025-56ff64f264403b8934ecbf1f91928d73">reshaping the Federal Emergency Management Agency</a>. Those plans will immediately put Noem in the spotlight after the new president visited recent disaster sites in North Carolina and California on Friday.

During&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/noem-homeland-security-cabinet-trump-border-immigration-36ea11f8432078e08e71dce23c56d68c">her Senate hearing</a>, Noem was repeatedly asked by Democratic senators whether she would administer disaster aid to states even if Trump asked her not to.

Noem avoided saying she would defy the president, but told lawmakers, “I will deliver the programs according to the law and that it will be done with no political bias.”

Six people cycled through as homeland security secretary during Trump's first four years in office.

Noem, who held her state's lone U.S. House seat for eight years before becoming governor in 2019, has risen in the GOP by tacking closely with Trump. At one point, she was even under consideration to be his running mate.

Her political stock took a momentary dip, however, when she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kristi-noem-book-dog-killing-081bd1d6e73fba046ea7fb534da1c79e">released a book</a>&nbsp;last year containing an account of her killing her hunting dog, as well as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kristi-noem-book-north-korea-90e61965e9ac486e52cec5b35da41f47">a false claim</a>&nbsp;that she once met with North Korean leader&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-korea-iran-diplomacy-military-cooperation-russia-f82461908cb59a15a634747e9ab48f6c">Kim Jong Un</a>.

Noem will be tasked with delivering on Trump's favorite issue, border security. The president's goals of deporting millions of people who entered the country illegally could put Noem, with her experience governing a rural state and growing up on a farm,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kristi-noem-dhs-immigration-crackdown-trump-south-dakota-52bf133437d20f4dd6f5284bb751e264">in a difficult position</a>. In South Dakota, many migrants, some in the country without permanent legal status, power the labor-heavy jobs that produce food and housing.

She has so far pledged to faithfully execute the president's orders and copied his talk of an “invasion” at the U.S. border with Mexico.

Noem joined other Republican governors who sent National Guard troops to Texas to assist&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-arrests-immigration-greg-abbott-civil-rights-violations-bcbfef0901b375c9301ade01a59eb1c9">Operation Lone Star</a>, which sought to discourage migrants. Her decision was especially criticized because she accepted a $1 million donation from a Tennessee billionaire to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-south-dakota-philanthropy-immigration-government-and-politics-ea0586be65e874578ca27ffcc690dba1">cover some of the deployment cost</a>.

Noem said she opted to send National Guard troops “because of this invasion," adding that “it is a war zone down there.”

Sterling Invitational 2025 Schedule and Results

Norman Miller was born on December 24,1932 in Tuolumne, CA. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on January 19, 2025. &nbsp;

As the youngest of 10, Norman grew up adventuring throughout California and Texas. From fishing with old mining dynamite (to make sure the younger kids didn’t hurt themselves with it) to picking up odd jobs around town (but not blacksmithing - it didn’t run in the family) to being the school bus driver his senior year (don’t ask about his driver’s license test), there were always things to do, people to meet, and things to learn.&nbsp;

Norm joined the Army in 1954. He married his childhood sweetheart&nbsp;Mary Lou&nbsp;Levaggi&nbsp;in 1955 and started a family. Together they had five children: Toni Miller, Theresa (Bart) Allen, Louie (Jamie) Miller, Tina Ralston, and Tracy Miller (Chris Leonhard). After the death of Mary Lou in 2002,&nbsp;Norm married Betty Chase and&nbsp;brought his loving and caring ways to her&nbsp;family&nbsp;and friends. &nbsp;With&nbsp;another&nbsp;family and&nbsp;even&nbsp;more&nbsp;friends,&nbsp;Norm&nbsp;had a new captive&nbsp;audience&nbsp;to tell&nbsp;his amazing stories.&nbsp;Norm was a beloved grandparent to numerous grandchildren who meant the world to him.

Many of Norm’s stories involved his time in the Army. He chose to join the aviation branch after attending a presentation where the cash sign on bonus “fell” out of his instructor’s flight suit pockets. He flew helicopters through Korea and Vietnam and across Central America, flying in and out of remote and sometimes dangerous locations for both missions and side quests. He loved to tell stories about his journeys, including but not limited to crash landing on the side of a mountain, building the best club for enlisted men, forced landing and peaceful communication with a tribe of uncontacted peoples, flipping a poolside bar as a prank and having it almost go terribly wrong, and making sure not a single one of his men were killed during his tenure.&nbsp;He transitioned to managing Schilling Air Force Base, where he proudly served the Salina community and worked with&nbsp;waitingwives’ groups and other community organizations.

If you didn’t know him as Colonel Norm, many knew Norm as Santa for over a 50+ year span.&nbsp; Always dressed in his classic red suit with jingle bells, his appearance might’ve morphed over the years (a fake beard and white chalk in the early years to proudly growing his own white beard in the later), but his ability to bring the magic of Christmas never wavered. Norm proudly served as a Santa for several generations of kids, keeping the Christmas magic alive through personal home visits, community events, radio and TV appearances, video calls, and even through hot air balloon visits.&nbsp;

Norm lived a busy life&nbsp;that filled his days throughout the years.&nbsp;There were always people to meet, things to do, and stories to tell.&nbsp;He was an auctioneer, owned and operated an antique&nbsp;store, participated&nbsp;in community theater events,&nbsp;did&nbsp;fundraising for community organizations, attended&nbsp;countless&nbsp;sporting events and concerts for his grandkids,&nbsp;cooked&nbsp;many, many&nbsp;Friday&nbsp;night&nbsp;dinners, read two or three books a day, and enjoyed&nbsp;a nice cigar&nbsp;with a&nbsp;drink (NOT water though, the fish poop in that).&nbsp;

Norman went by many names: dad, pop, grandpa, Colonel, Santa, friend, role model, hero. To know Norm was to know kindness, mischief, selflessness, magic, friendship, warmth, and love. He was a rule breaker with pure intentions to do what was right for those he loved and the people he served. He was a problem solver,&nbsp;quick-witted, and had never met a&nbsp;stranger&nbsp;in his life. Norm was a friend to all, always ready to lend an ear, tell a story, cook a meal, or host a party at a moment’s notice. We will remember Norm with a book in his hand, a cigar in his mouth, a twinkle in eyes, and a smile, ready to tell the world of his adventures.

Norm proudly served as a Santa for several generations of kids, keeping the Christmas magic alive through personal home visits, community events, radio and TV appearances, video calls, and even through hot air balloon visits.&nbsp;Norm lived a busy life&nbsp;that filled his days throughout the years.&nbsp;There were always people to meet, things to do, and stories to tell.&nbsp;He was an auctioneer, owned and operated an antique&nbsp;store, participated&nbsp;in community theater events,&nbsp;did&nbsp;fundraising for community organizations, attended&nbsp;countless&nbsp;sporting events and concerts for his grandkids,&nbsp;cooked&nbsp;many, many&nbsp;Friday&nbsp;night&nbsp;dinners, read two or three books a day, and enjoyed&nbsp;a nice cigar&nbsp;with a&nbsp;drink (NOT water though, the fish poop in that).&nbsp;Norman went by many names: dad, pop, grandpa, Colonel, Santa, friend, role model, hero. To know Norm was to know kindness, mischief, selflessness, magic, friendship, warmth, and love. He was a rule breaker with pure intentions to do what was right for those he loved and the people he served. He was a problem solver,&nbsp;quick-witted, and had never met a&nbsp;stranger&nbsp;in his life. Norm was a friend to all, always ready to lend an ear, tell a story, cook a meal, or host a party at a moment’s notice. WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night in Wichita.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office (SGSO) and Wichita Police Department (WPD) requested KBI assistance on Thursday, Jan. 23, around 11:55 p.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

At around 9 p.m., WPD received a call about a man who forced entry into a home and attempted to shoot at a male resident. The subject had bonded out of jail on domestic violence charges earlier that day. The man was later identified as Devario C. Edwards, 28, of Wichita.

Preliminary information indicates that after Edwards attempted to shoot the resident, he fled the scene and began a Facebook livestream. In the video, he is armed with a rifle and indicated he was headed to Spirit Aerosystems.

Once he arrived at Spirit, deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff and Wichita Police officers located the vehicle and a brief car chase ensued. Edwards then jumped out of his vehicle holding the gun. Around 11:10 p.m., he shot several rounds at officers, beginning an exchange of gunfire. Edwards was struck multiple times. Shortly after, officers approached him, secured his weapon, and began performing lifesaving measures. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 12:14 a.m. No law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange.

The preliminary investigation indicated that during the incident two police vehicles were struck by gunfire. Edwards fired over 20 rounds at police. A total of eight law enforcement officers fired over 100 rounds.
