She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she is featured on their album Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last-minute cancellation in 2002 at the Portland club “Dante’s” turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was soon to be launched onto the international stage. In the 18-19 season, Storm performed her one-woman autobiographical musical memoir Crazy Enough at La Jolla Music Society and Portland Center Stage, celebrating the show’s ten-year anniversary. Recent engagements include debuts with the Philly Pops, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Detroit, Toronto, and BBC Symphonies; the New York Pops; and the Louisville Orchestra, with whom she recorded the 2017 album All In. Just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a&nbsp;shooting at a home in 2400 block of SE Maryland in Topeka.&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon arrival, officers located two individuals identified as&nbsp;as 15-year-old Owen M. Hughes and 21-year-old Reginald L. McKinney Jr., both of Topeka suffering from life-threating injuries, according to Lt. Andrew Beightel. Both were pronounced dead by medical personnel on scene. On Thursday police arrested Larry D. Huggins III, 19, of Topeka in connection with this investigation, according to Lt. Jennifer Cross. Huggins was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on charges of murder, aggravated burglary, and attempted aggravated robbery.

May Our Voices Ring True, an event with Huascar Medina, Poet Laureate of Kansas, is scheduled for noon on Dec. 2 in Fitzpatrick Auditorium. Members of the community are invited to attend the free program, which is available due to the support of Humanities Kansas.&nbsp;The event’s noon start time allows for 30 minutes of open-mic time for the community. Guidelines on time limit and number of speakers will be enforced, after which Medina will begin his presentation. The complete event is scheduled to last until 1:30 p.m.&nbsp;Medina is a poet, writer, and performer who lives in Topeka. He currently works as a freelance copywriter and as the Literary Editor for&nbsp;seveneightfive&nbsp;magazine publishing stories that spotlight literary and artistic events in Northeast Kansas. Those millennials — and their Gen Z successors — have also given rise to a new word: adulting. Aging folks from the baby boom or Generation X enjoy ridiculing today’s college students when those younger people can’t change a tire or wash their clothes without turning to Mom or Dad. But educators say students privileged enough to go to college and who somehow avoided learning when to change their oil also grew up under a mountain of academic pressure. All that drilling for college entrance exams and robust GPAs left them book-smart — and less life-savvy. So Kansas State University and other colleges have turned to adulting workshops. The noncredit classes aim to teach students the practical skills that don’t come up in ordinary classrooms. Mental health advocates hope the workshops can also temper the stress caused by academic pressure and a lack of knowhow about living beyond the reach of hovering parents. Curbing home economicsAdulting lessons used to go by another well-known name: home economics. Those classes taught cooking, sewing, budgeting and other practical skills. But long before adulting classes took over, home economics got rebranded. To shred the house-wife-in-training sensibility, many of the classes were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.latimes.com/food/la-fo-homeec-20100826-story.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">relabeled</a>&nbsp;as “family and consumer science” in the 1990s. Their popularity declined anyway. In 2012, fewer than&nbsp;<a href="https://higherlogicdownload.s3.amazonaws.com/AAFCS/1c95de14-d78f-40b8-a6ef-a1fb628c68fe/UploadedImages/About/JFCS_105-4_Werhan.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">3.5 million students were taking FCS classes</a>, a 38% drop over a decade. FCS teachers are in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2018/06/14/618329461/despite-a-revamped-focus-on-real-life-skills-home-ec-classes-fade-away" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">short supply</a>. And two decades of shifting education policies — starting with the No Child Left Behind Act — have caused schools to&nbsp;<a href="http://neatoday.org/2014/09/02/the-testing-obsession-and-the-disappearing-curriculum-2/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">focus on a narrow set of often-tested subjects</a>. “It’s not considered to be a core area, and so it’s easier to say, ‘maybe we don’t need this,’” said Duane Whitbeck, the chair of Family and Consumer Sciences at Pittsburg State University. That emphasis on a limited number of subjects and the pressure to perform well in them has left today’s college students feeling unready for challenges not found on a Scantron test. “I feel like I was ill-prepared for life in general,” said Ashley Fox, a K-State student. Enter adultingSome colleges want to fill in those missing life skills with free, noncredit workshops they often call “Adulting 101.” <a href="https://www.wichita.edu/calendar/index.php?eID=5237" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">Wichita State University</a>&nbsp;offered one on budgeting. The University of Nebraska-Kearney’s version touches on&nbsp;<a href="http://www.unk.edu/academics/crrd/programs/adulting-101.php" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">tax preparation</a>. A University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill workshop focuses on&nbsp;<a href="https://library.unc.edu/house/workshops/adulting-101/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">building credit</a>. K-State offers a series of workshops. The school’s lessons include car maintenance, food safety and conflict resolution for dealing with that roommate who expects you to do all the toilet scrubbing.<a href="https://www.hayspost.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/adulting_101_cooking_0.jpg" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);"><img src="https://www.hayspost.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/adulting_101_cooking_0-1024x683.jpg" width="1024" height="683"></a>Student dietitians at Kansas State University lead an adulting workshop on food safety. They were interested because they felt they had few other opportunities to pick up these skills. “We don’t have classes on how to change a tire at school,” said Frankie Skinner, a student at K-State who helped create the adulting workshops. “We lack knowledge of just basic adulting.” Adulting 101: more than Home Economics 2.0Educators hope even a lesson on oil changes does more than teach students about car maintenance. They’re trying to build sturdier adults in the context of what they describe as a mental health crisis. Mental health treatment for college students went from&nbsp;<a href="http://ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ps.201800332" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">1</a><a href="https://ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ps.201800332" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">9% to 34%</a><a href="http://ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ps.201800332" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">&nbsp;</a>between 2007 and 2017. Students and educators point to an unprecedented amount of academic expectations leaving students&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nyu.edu/about/news-publications/news/2015/august/nyu-study-examines-top-high-school-students-stress-and-coping-mechanisms.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">exhausted and stressed</a>. “In high school, I felt really pressured to take a lot of college classes to succeed because there was a huge race for valedictorian and being top of the class,” said K-State student Anna Traynham. “No matter how high your GPA was … everybody was still stressed. … You had to be perfect all the time.” While academic pressure is believed to play a big part in stressing out students, evidence suggests it’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.activeminds.org/press-releases/mental-health-does-not-discriminate-by-gpa/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">not just high-achieving students</a>&nbsp;feeling the anxiety. Mental health advocates believe adulting classes can help in two ways: The first is simply preparing already-overwhelmed students to deal with life’s pitfalls. A flat tire is less stressful when you know where to find the tire iron. “These basic problem-solving life skills are being brushed under the rug,” said Megan Katt, a health educator at K-State. “Instead, we’re just drilling all this academic work into their head.” The second idea deals with another word that’s become popular on campus — resilience. That ability to bounce back from challenges can mean the difference between working through a stressful event and spiraling into a breakdown. And educators believe today’s students are less resilient than previous generations.“When we’re not given the tools to solve problems, we are not able to be resilient,” said Megan Katt, who helped create the K-state’s adulting workshops. Mental health advocates say there are merits to both adulting and workshops specifically aimed at building resiliency. But Laura Horne, chief program officer at the mental advocacy organization Active Minds, warns that these are just short-term solutions. Addressing the college mental health crisis takes changing the culture of campus so that more staff and students feel comfortable talking about mental health issues. “It’s a long game,” Horne said. “This is really difficult work to do, but it is … worth doing.” Stephan Bisaha reports on education and young adult life for the Kansas News Service. Exploration geologist, author and artist-adventurer Charles Lindsay has done just that in the exhibition “FIELD STATION 4,” which runs through Oct. 3, 2020, at the&nbsp;<a href="https://beach.k-state.edu/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(39, 163, 209);">Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University. In “FIELD STATION 4,” Lindsay delves into earth’s geologic and cultural pasts by repurposing scientific equipment salvaged from the aerospace, biotech, and military sectors to probe biologic specimens and ancient artifacts, creating immersive environments, sound installations and sculptures. Lindsay’s art springs from his long and varied career. Before becoming an artist, Lindsay was an exploration geologist in the Canadian arctic, which morphed into a career as a photojournalist. He spent time in ancient cultures, living with a shaman in Tibet and exploring remote places in the Himalayas. He conducted artistic research at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, and eventually landed at the nearby Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute, known as SETI, where he directs SETI AIR, an artist-in-residence program. The author of eight books of photographs, Lindsay’s latest is “Recipes for the Mind,” published by Terra Nova/MIT Press. Lindsay’s work at SETI inspired him to create artworks probing the concept of collapsing time, making possible simultaneous encounters with the deep past and acute present. This coalesced in his “FIELD STATIONS” project, an evolving architectural form based on the mineral exploration camps where he worked and in the laboratories at NASA Ames where he made art. “‘FIELD STATION 4’ is designed as a place to detach from the outer world, to tune out, or in, to contemplate the nature of information, reality, the other, the future,” Lindsay said. Related to the exhibition will be the event Art and Science in the Anthropocene Age: Public Conversation With Charles Lindsay at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 6, 2020, at the Beach Museum of Art. Brandon Jordan, 48, was booked Sunday&nbsp;and is being held on a $500,000 bond in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of first-degree murder in the commission of a felony, interference with law enforcement, obstruction, failure to yield at a stop sign, flee or attempt to elude. He is also being held on charges of forgery and a probation violation, according to online records. Jordan was&nbsp;driving a 2003 Acura TL linked to a bad-check cashing case and caused a deadly crash while trying to get away from a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper. The chase westbound on Holly Lane in Topeka lasted only a couple seconds, according to the KHP. Jordan ran a stop sign and crashed into a 2016 Ford Explorer driven by Dennis E. Affolter, 69, Topeka. EMS transported Affolter to Stormont Vail where he died. Jordan has 19 previous convictions that include forgery, burglary, theft, obstruction and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Police investigate alleged sex crime reported by student in Great Bend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The man accused of firing the first shots at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-62e69a17b469b854afd7bcc3f548d1fc">Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally</a>&nbsp;told authorities he felt threatened, while a second man said he pulled the trigger because someone was shooting at him, according to court documents.

Experts say that even though the shooting left one bystander dead and roughly two dozen people injured, 23-year-old Lyndell Mays and 18-year-old Dominic Miller might have good cases for self-defense through the state’s “stand your ground” law.

Missouri is among more than 30 states that have adopted some version of stand your ground laws over the past two decades, said Robert Spitzer, a professor emeritus of political science at the State University of New York, Cortland, whose research focuses on gun policy and politics. While earlier laws allowed people to use force to protect themselves in their homes, stand your ground provides even broader self-defense rights regardless of the location.

Now, the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebration could be a new test of those expanded protections, and comes as self-defense already is at the center of another&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ralph-yarl/">high-profile Kansas City shooting</a>&nbsp;that left Ralph Yarl wounded.

“This illustrates in a dramatic way the fundamental problem, especially when it’s a public gathering where there are thousands and thousands of people, and even a highly trained police officer often cannot avoid injuring others in a gunfire exchange in a public place,” said Spitzer, who wrote the book “Guns Across America: Reconciling Gun Rules and Rights.”

Trial attorney Daniel Ross described the stand your ground law as a “formidable defense” that he and many other Kansas City defense attorneys anticipate will be used in Mays' and Miller's cases. He said the law puts the onus on the prosecution to disprove claims that a shooting is lawful self-defense.

“Collateral damage under Missouri law is excused if you’re actually engaged in lawful self-defense and there’s other folks injured,” he said.

There are limits to the defense, however, said Eric Ruben, a law professor at the S.M.U. Dedman School of Law in Dallas who has written on stand your ground and self-defense immunity.

“Even though Missouri has robust stand-your-ground laws, that doesn’t mean you can spray bullets into a crowd in the name of defending yourself or others,” Ruben said.

The barrage of gunfire Feb. 14 outside Kansas City’s historic Union Station happened as the celebration that drew an estimated 1 million fans was concluding. A&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-62e69a17b469b854afd7bcc3f548d1fc">woman died</a>&nbsp;while watching the rally with her family, and nearly two dozen others — more than half of them children — were injured and survived.

Kansas City already was grappling with the shooting of Yarl, a Black teenager, who survived a bullet wound to the head when he went to the wrong house in April 2023 to pick up his brothers. Andrew Lester, an 85-year-old white man, is planning to claim&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-wichita-topeka-legislature-gun-politics-6f61a926a56353a4b22ffecf90c46be3">self-defense</a>&nbsp;when he goes to trial in October. His attorney said the retiree was terrified by the stranger on his doorstep.

While the Super Bowl celebration shooting was a far different scenario, it raises anew questions about how far people can go to protect themselves and what happens when the innocent become victims.

Mays and Miller are each charged with second-degree murder and other counts.

Probable cause statements suggest that both men felt threatened. Mays said he picked out one person in a group at random and started shooting because they said, “I'm going to get you,” and he took that to mean, “I'm going to kill you,” the statement said.

Miller said under questioning that he fired four or five times because someone was shooting at him. His friend, Marques Harris, told&nbsp;<a href="https://fox4kc.com/news/friend-says-chiefs-parade-shooting-suspect-was-only-protecting-him/">WDAF-TV</a>&nbsp;that Miller was only trying to protect him after he was shot in the neck.

Miller’s attorney didn’t return phone and email messages seeking comment. No attorney was listed for Mays in online court records.

Two juveniles also face&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-278e2d3e2cfece1cbe958511e54127ad">gun-related and resisting arrest</a>&nbsp;charges.

Missouri has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-938583b1e9aa3b3a45f8a012e7b80fee">few firearm regulations</a>, and two of its cities — Kansas City and St. Louis — annually have among the nation's highest homicide rates. Missouri’s current Republican lawmakers have largely defended the state’s gun laws, instead blaming prosecutors and other local elected officials in the two cities.

And Republican Gov. Mike Parson, speaking to reporters last week, cited societal problems — not guns — as the reason for the violence. “I believe it's much more than a gun," he said.

When&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/missouri-lawmakers-loosen-gun-laws-back-voter-photo-id-c973268d37704b9b9b221e59c5b5dc7d?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">Republican lawmakers in 2016</a>&nbsp;expanded the state's already-extensive self-defense protections by enacting the current stand your ground law, Black Missouri lawmakers raised concerns. The law also allowed most adults to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/missouri-lawmakers-loosen-gun-laws-back-voter-photo-id-c973268d37704b9b9b221e59c5b5dc7d?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">carry concealed guns</a>&nbsp;without a permit.

Rittenhouse’s actions became a flashpoint in the debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice in the U.S.

The shooting death of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/trayvon-martin">Trayvon Martin</a>, a Black 17-year-old, by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/george-zimmerman">George Zimmerman</a>&nbsp;also spurred concerns about stand your ground laws. Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman who thought Martin looked suspicious, wasn’t arrested for 44 days after the Feb. 26, 2012, shooting as police in Sanford, Florida, insisted that Florida’s stand your ground law prohibited charges.

Zimmerman was eventually arrested and charged, but his attorneys chose not to pursue a stand your ground claim, which could have resulted in the dismissal of murder changes as well as immunity from prosecution. But during the trial, the law was essentially used as part of his self-defense argument. Jurors found him not guilty.

In Georgia, which also has a stand your ground law, three white men accused of fatally shooting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-ahmaud-arberys-killing-spurred-a-national-reckoning-on-race">Ahmaud Arbery</a>&nbsp;in 2020 claimed self-defense. Travis McMichael, his father Greg McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan claimed they chased Arbery, who was Black, because they thought he was a burglar. All three were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/watch-live-three-men-convicted-of-the-murder-of-ahmaud-arbery-will-be-sentenced-for-the-killing">convicted of murder</a>.

In 2022, Wichita, Kansas, area district attorney Marc Bennett was critical of the state’s stand your ground law when he announced that he wouldn’t file charges over the death of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wichita-kansas-a51f619b8b196987e74b046ac399680c">Cedric Lofton</a>, a Black 17-year-old who was restrained facedown for more than 30 minutes at a juvenile detention center. Bennett said the law prevented him from bringing charges because staff members were protecting themselves.

With the Chiefs parade case unfolding, it is time to look anew at these laws, said Melba Pearson, a former homicide prosecutor who is now the director of prosecution projects at the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University.

“What are truly the limits in terms of stand your ground and what really falls into the category of self-defense?" she asked. "Do we need to revisit what stand your ground looks like?”

(AP) — The man accused of firing the first shots at the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-62e69a17b469b854afd7bcc3f548d1fc">Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally</a>&nbsp;told authorities he felt threatened, while a second man said he pulled the trigger because someone was shooting at him, according to court documents.Experts say that even though the shooting left one bystander dead and roughly two dozen people injured, 23-year-old Lyndell Mays and 18-year-old Dominic Miller might have good cases for self-defense through the state’s “stand your ground” law.Missouri is among more than 30 states that have adopted some version of stand your ground laws over the past two decades, said Robert Spitzer, a professor emeritus of political science at the State University of New York, Cortland, whose research focuses on gun policy and politics. While earlier laws allowed people to use force to protect themselves in their homes, stand your ground provides even broader self-defense rights regardless of the location.Now, the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebration could be a new test of those expanded protections, and comes as self-defense already is at the center of another&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ralph-yarl/">high-profile Kansas City shooting</a>&nbsp;that left Ralph Yarl wounded.“This illustrates in a dramatic way the fundamental problem, especially when it’s a public gathering where there are thousands and thousands of people, and even a highly trained police officer often cannot avoid injuring others in a gunfire exchange in a public place,” said Spitzer, who wrote the book “Guns Across America: Reconciling Gun Rules and Rights.”Trial attorney Daniel Ross described the stand your ground law as a “formidable defense” that he and many other Kansas City defense attorneys anticipate will be used in Mays' and Miller's cases. He said the law puts the onus on the prosecution to disprove claims that a shooting is lawful self-defense.“Collateral damage under Missouri law is excused if you’re actually engaged in lawful self-defense and there’s other folks injured,” he said.There are limits to the defense, however, said Eric Ruben, a law professor at the S.M.U. Dedman School of Law in Dallas who has written on stand your ground and self-defense immunity.“Even though Missouri has robust stand-your-ground laws, that doesn’t mean you can spray bullets into a crowd in the name of defending yourself or others,” Ruben said.The barrage of gunfire Feb. 14 outside Kansas City’s historic Union Station happened as the celebration that drew an estimated 1 million fans was concluding. Mays said he picked out one person in a group at random and started shooting because they said, “I'm going to get you,” and he took that to mean, “I'm going to kill you,” the statement said.Miller said under questioning that he fired four or five times because someone was shooting at him.
