JACKSON COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect following a high-speed chase.

&nbsp;A sheriff’s deputy and a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper allegedly measured the speed of a southbound Chrysler Sebring near 142nd and U.S. 75 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The driver later identified as&nbsp;Harold Jesse Sheffield II, 54,&nbsp; Topeka, allegedly attempted to elude law enforcement when a pursuit ensued. 

The vehicle came to a stop approximately ½ mile west of US Highway 75 on 110th Road. 

Authorities arrested Sheffield and found a substance believed to be methamphetamine and an opened alcoholic container in the vehicle, according to Morse. 

&nbsp;Sheffield was booked into the Jackson County Jail for fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine, driving while suspended, and transporting and open container. Sheffield also had 3 outstanding Jackson County warrants and 1 Shawnee County warrant, according to Morse.

Just before 2a.m. Wednesday, deputies located a stump grinder and a trailer in the driveway of a residence in the 2700 block of NE 35th&nbsp;Street, according to Shawnee County Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.

 These items matched the description of stolen property reported to the Topeka Police Department with an estimated value of around $15,000. Deputies were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence. Topeka Police officers arrived on scene a short time later and seized the stolen property.

Later in the morning at around 5:10 a.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 1998 Chevy Z71 pickup truck near NE Sherman Rd and K4 HWY for an equipment violation. The Chevy pickup matched the description of a vehicle that was believed to be involved in the theft of the stump grinder and trailer.&nbsp;

The driver, later identified as 39-year-old Travis D. Walker of Topeka was detained for questioning by the Topeka Police Department and was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections for Felony Theft charges.&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating an aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and after asking the public for help, have arrested&nbsp; 24-year-old Madelyn Roberts of Wichita.

Just after 3 a.m. Thursday, officers initiated a traffic stop on a stolen red Chevrolet Sonic at Kellogg and Hillside in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; 

Roberts, who was identified as the driver, refused to stop, and a traffic pursuit ensued.&nbsp; The vehicle became disabled at Lincoln and I-135, and Roberts and a passenger identified a John Hall-Kennedy were arrested without further incident.

One officer contacted Murphy and the second officer went to contact Roberts. She put the car in drive, drove into the officer, and struck him with the vehicle while fleeing. The officer ended up on the hood of the car before sliding off. The second officer lost sight of the first officer believing he was injured and being dragged by the vehicle and fired three shots. Roberts fled the scene in the stolen car. No one was injured in this event.

The March incident involving Roberts has been presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office and Thursday's case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Roberts is being held on on bonds totaling $180,000 for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, felony flee and elude, an aggravated weapons violation, theft, two city of Wichita warrants, and a Sedgwick County warrant, stemming from the early morning chase and the officer-involved shooting in March.

John Hall-Kennedy&nbsp; is being held on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a Kansas Department of Corrections parole violation.&nbsp;

Roberts has been previously arrested and convicted on charges that include criminal possession of a weapon and possession of drugs.&nbsp; Hall-Kennedy has been previously arrested and convicted on a charge of manufacturing of meth.

Just after 8:30 p.m. March 16, police responded to a home in the 1200 block of West 2nd Street to check for a stolen vehicle, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upon arrival, officers located the stolen vehicle at the home.&nbsp; Roberts was backing the car into the driveway, and an 18-year-old man identified as Kaeden Murphy was causing a verbal disturbance in the front of the residence.&nbsp;

Today in History -- April 10

An investigation into an alleged armed robbery in northeastern Saline County on Feb. 23 has resulted in the arrests of five people in Salina, with a bonus arrest of someone on the county most-wanted list.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutanant Jeremiah Hayes said this morning that deputies were dispatched to the 6000 block of North Cunningham Road at approximately 3 p.m. on Feb. 23 for the report of an armed robbery. Two victims were driven to that location by some of the alleged perpetrators while a second vehicle arrived at the scene with more alleged perpetrators to help with the robbery, Hayes said. The two victims were dragged from the vehicle and their money was stolen, he said. The suspects then got back in the vehicles and left the two victims at the location, Hayes explained. The victims walked to a nearby residence and called authorities, he added.

Because of information discovered during the investigation, two search warrants were executed on residences in two parts of Salina on Tuesday, Hayes said. The operation was conducted with the assistance of the Salina Police Department, he said.

During the execution of a search warrant at 844 Sheridan Street, Darren Jackson, 38, was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hayes said.

Two counts of criminal possession of a firearm by a felon

During the execution of the second search warrant, at 2130 East Crawford Street apartment No. 309, two people -- Jesse Rick, 40, and Ana Ramos, 20 -- were arrested, Hayes said. Additionally, during the search, two handguns, one reported stolen from Wichita, and approximately a quarter pound of methamphetamine were located, he explained.

Rick was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hayes said.

Possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute

Ana Ramos was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hayes said.

During the search, another suspect was seen entering the parking lot, but the vehicle took off, Hayes said. A felony stop was conducted on the vehicle at South Ohio Street and East Prescott Road, he said. A K9 was used during the search of the vehicle, and two handguns and three to four ounces of methamphetamine were located, Hayes said.

Heather Stebbins, 31, who also was a suspect in the alleged armed robbery, was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hayes said.

Felony interference with a law enforcement officer

The driver of the black SUV, Armani Ramos, 29, was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hayes said.

Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon

Two counts of possession of a Level 4 substance with intent to distribute (narcotic pills)

Possession of a Level 2 substance with intent to distribute (narcotic pills)

While law enforcement personnel were working at the 2130 East Crawford Street apartment No. 309 location, another person -- Troy Chambers, 44 -- who happened to be on the county's most-wanted list, knocked on the door and was arrested, Hayes said.

According to the Saline County Jail booking log, Chambers was arrested for failure to appear and on suspicion of possession of an opiate, narcotic, or certain stimulant and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

COWLEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday police responded to a residence at 706 S. Sixth Street in Arkansas City for a report of a physical disturbance in progress, according to Arkansas City police.

Officers learned 29-year-old&nbsp; Blas Orlando Ibarra allegedly broke open the front door of the residence and entered without permission. 

Once inside, he allegedly struck a 63-year-old man in the face and threatened to kill him.

During the altercation, the door was broken and then Ibarra left. He was found across the street and taken into custody without further incident on requested charges of felony&nbsp; aggravated burglary of an occupied dwelling,&nbsp; battery and criminal damage to property.

He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $25,000 bond

Police: Kansas man broke into house, battered 63-year-old

Eileen’s life began on July 26, 1923, the daughter of Charles and Erie (Napier) Collinsworth in Big Sandy, West Virginia. She graduated from Mullens High Class of 1940, in Mullens, West Virginia. She married Ordie Jake Sigmon “Bub” on September 5, 1941 in Pineville, West Virginia. Eileen was a part-owner in a ladies clothing boutique “Polka Dot Clothing” in Beckley. She moved to Burns, Kansas in 2000, and attended the Burns United Methodist, Burns Countryside Church and then Central Community Church upon moving to Wichita. She loved ceramics, sewing, flower gardening, reading her Bible and watching Charles Stanley on television.

Her loving family includes her son and his wife, Ordie “Sonny” (Carolyn) Sigmon of Beckley, West Virginia; daughter and her husband, Sherry and Joe Vestring of Wichita; daughter, Brenda Burwell of Newton, Kansas; grandchildren, Alisa (Krassi) Damianov of Wichita, Bryan (Rachael) Tarr of Fort Worth, Texas, Sunny Sue Sigmon and Jacob Sigmon all of Beckley, West Virginia; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Andrew, David, Jeremy and Elainey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1977; son, Gene Sigmon; grandson, Walter E. Arndt III, and ten siblings. Eileen passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2020, at the age of 96 years old.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 9, at 2:00 p.m. in the Burns Cemetery in Burns, Kansas with Chaplain Tal Tittsworth with Good Shepherd Hospice officiating.

Eileen was a part-owner in a ladies clothing boutique “Polka Dot Clothing” in Beckley. She moved to Burns, Kansas in 2000, and attended the Burns United Methodist, Burns Countryside Church and then Central Community Church upon moving to Wichita. She loved ceramics, sewing, flower gardening, reading her Bible and watching Charles Stanley on television.Her loving family includes her son and his wife, Ordie “Sonny” (Carolyn) Sigmon of Beckley, West Virginia; daughter and her husband, Sherry and Joe Vestring of Wichita; daughter, Brenda Burwell of Newton, Kansas; grandchildren, Alisa (Krassi) Damianov of Wichita, Bryan (Rachael) Tarr of Fort Worth, Texas, Sunny Sue Sigmon and Jacob Sigmon all of Beckley, West Virginia; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Andrew, David, Jeremy and Elainey.She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1977; son, Gene Sigmon; grandson, Walter E. Arndt III, and ten siblings. HARVEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; a viral video of two people walking through Walmart in Newton coughing on other people and saying they have coronavirus, according to a social media report police in Newton.

Police were not called at the time of this incident, but Newton officers began investigating after seeing the video on social media. Police identified the suspects, interviewed them and have arrested Hazel Hamrick, 29, and Ernest Williams, 47, both of Hesston,&nbsp; on requested charges of felony criminal threat and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. They've been booked into Harvey County Jail.

Both admitted to walking around Walmart with Williams coughing on people while Hamrick verbalized that Williams had the coronavirus. They both indicated they don't take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously and thought it would be funny.

Harvey County Attorney's Office has indicated they will aggressively pursue prosecution of the two individuals, including other potential criminal charges, according to police.
