In 1877, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Brigham Young, died in Salt Lake City, Utah, at age 76.

I’ve been with my company almost four years. Currently, I
make the same money as a co-worker with the same title and the same amount of
time on the job. But since we’ve both been there, I have taken on many more
responsibilities than he has. What’s your advice on asking for a raise? I feel
that I have the right to complain about the situation, and think I should make
more money than he does.

If you honestly feel like you deserve a raise because of your
effort and performance on the job, that’s fine. Sit down with your leader, and
make an objective, logical, and reasonable argument for why you deserve more
money. I wouldn’t mention your co-worker, because it’s just not relevant. What is
relevant is the value you bring to the company.&nbsp;

I understand how you feel right now. But no, you don’t have
the “right” to complain. You agreed on your pay when you took the job, and you
should perform your duties with <a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/ways-to-be-a-leader-in-your-community">integrity and character</a>. What someone else does, or doesn’t
do, isn’t tied to your personal compensation.

If you think you deserve a raise, and you’ve got the results
to prove it, sit down and have a respectful conversation with you leader. Show
him or her the numbers, and the value you bring to the company, and explain why
you feel you should <a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/how-to-make-the-most-of-your-raise">get more money.</a>

You’ve got to change the person in the mirror

I’m just starting to pay off my debts. How do you feel about
moving credit card balances to other companies in order to get lower rates? It
seems like that would help me get out of debt faster.

I get what you’re saying. It might help speed up the process
a tiny bit, but the habits that got you into debt in the first place won’t
change just because you’ve switched credit card companies. What you’re talking
about is an easy way to lower the interest rates—temporarily, in most cases—but
it doesn’t keep you from taking on more <a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/debt-consolidation-truth">debt.</a>

Many people think they’ve really done something to solve
their debt problems when they do this. But you’ve got to remember that getting
out of debt, and gaining control of your finances, is all about changing the
person you see in the mirror. You’ve got to make a commitment to getting out of
debt, staying out of debt, and sticking to a written, <a href="https://www.everydollar.com/guide-to-budgeting-dave-says">monthly budget</a>—that means keeping track of every,
single dollar and living on less than you make.

In many cases, when people have problems with debt it’s the
result of unwise lifestyle and financial choices. But guess what? When you change, interest rates don’t matter
nearly as much. And when you shift your mindset about money, that will make a
difference in a way that changing <a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/credit-card-rewards-yeah-right">credit card</a> companies and chasing lower interest
rates can’t!

Today is Friday, Aug. 28, the 241st day of 2020. There are 125 days left in the year. 

On August 28, 1963, more than 200,000 people listened as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. 

In 1917, 10 suffragists demanding that President Woodrow Wilson support a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote were arrested as they picketed outside the White House.

In 1944, during World War II, German forces in Toulon and Marseille, France, surrendered to Allied troops. 

In 1955, Emmett Till, a Black teen from Chicago, was abducted from his uncle's home in Money, Mississippi, by two white men after he had supposedly whistled at a white woman; he was found brutally slain three days later. 

In 1964, two days of race-related rioting erupted in North Philadelphia over a false rumor that white police officers had beaten to death a pregnant Black woman.

U.S. and Afghan forces repelled attackers wearing American uniforms and suicide vests in a pair of simultaneous assaults before dawn on NATO bases near the Pakistan border. A gunman in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, shot and killed the mother of his two children, the woman's boyfriend and three other people before fleeing with the children to Rancho Cucamonga, California, where he killed himself (the children were unharmed).

Five years ago: President Barack Obama compared tensions between the U.S. and Israel over the Iranian nuclear deal to a family feud, and said in a webcast with Jewish Americans that he expected quick improvements in ties between the longtime allies once the accord was implemented. A jury in Concord, New Hampshire, acquitted Owen Labrie, a prep school graduate, of rape but convicted him of committing lesser sex offenses against a 15-year-old freshman girl in a case that exposed a tradition in which seniors competed to see how many younger students they could have sex with.

One year ago: New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination; the campaign collapsed amid low polling and major fundraising struggles. Hurricane Dorian strengthened as it moved toward the U.S. Southeast coast; the storm left little damage in its wake in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Today in History -- Aug. 28

ELLIS COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a high speed chase Wednesday evening on Interstate 70.

Just before 7p.m. a Kansas Highway Patrol did a speed check on a westbound mini van with Texas license plates just east of Victoria, according to Trooper Tod Hileman.

The driver later identified as 26-year-old Demareon Gaskin of Grandview, Missouri took the Victoria exit and quickly returned to I-70 eastbound and the pursuit was underway.

Gaskin crossed over the median of the interstate, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes and exited the I-70 using the Walker Avenue on ramp. The van then returned to I-70 traveling westbound at speeds of 105 miles per hour, according to Hileman.

Gaskin used the on ramp at Gorham to exit the interstate and traveled north on 176th Street into and out of the city of Gorham. At this point the state trooper lost the van, according to Hileman.

At 7:29p.m. Hays Police located the van that was now westbound back on Interstate 70 just east of Commerce Parkway. Police stopped the van, now driven by an unidentified woman, at the Vine Street off-ramp.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Authorities took Gaskin and the woman to the hospital as a precaution, according to Hileman. They were not injured.

Police booked Gaskin into the Ellis County Jail on requested charges that included reckless driving, flee and elude, transporting an open container, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, felony possession of a firearm and numerous traffic violations, according to Hileman. Police did arrest the woman.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a pair of shootings and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 3p.m. Tuesday, police went to an address in the 1600 block of SW Harrison in Topeka to try and locate 31 year old Samuel L. Portlock of Topeka, who was wanted in connection with two shooting incidents on Monday, according to Lt. Ron Ekis.

Officers had reason to believe he was hiding inside the residence and possibly armed with a weapon. TPD Crisis Negotiation Team and Response Team were asked to respond to assist with searching for the suspect. 

Just after 6:15 p.m. police took Portlock into custody without incident. No one was injured during this incident. The suspect was taken to the LEC for questioning and then transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections and booked on requested charges of&nbsp;aggravated assault and other criminal charges, according to Ekis.

GREENWOOD COUNTY–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office have arrested two men and a teen connected to the murder of 78-year-old Danny Shue from Eureka, Kan.

Just before 3p.m. Aug. 25, KBI agents and sheriff’s deputies arrested Noah J. E. Farr, 30, of Dighton, Kansas.

Farr was arrested at the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and then booked into the Finney County Jail. 

At approximately 5 p.m. Tuesday, a 17-year-old male from El Dorado was arrested at the El Dorado Police Department, and then transported to an area juvenile facility where he is being held. 

Then, at around 7 p.m. Tuesday night, Joseph E. Warden, 25, of El Dorado, was arrested at the El Dorado Police Department and booked into the Greenwood County Jail. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office and the El Dorado Police Department assisted with the arrests.

Farr, Warden, and the juvenile were each charged with felony murder, aggravated burglary, felony theft, and conspiracy to commit felony theft. Charges are accusations, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to this case is asked to call the KBI at 1-800-KSCRIME, or the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office at (620) 583-5568.

KBI: 3 arrested in murder of 78-year-old Kan. man

COWLEY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities arrested a Kansas man after he allegedly brandished a knife outside a local store.

Just before 2p.m. August 22, police were dispatched to the parking lot of Walmart Supercenter, 2701 N. Summit Street in Arkansas City for a report of a disturbance involving a knife.

Police made contact with the victim, a 21-year-old Winfield man, and several witnesses, who reported the incident started after one of the parties honked his car horn at the other driver on Summit Street.

One of the drivers pulled his vehicle into the Walmart parking lot and parked it. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect later identified as&nbsp; 29-year-old Eric Carter Rogers allegedly became confrontational with the victim and pushed him.

Rogers then allegedly displayed a large knife and began yelling at the victim. 

Police located Rogers inside Walmart and took him into custody without incident on requested charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor battery. He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $10,750

Mary Eleanor Hanson Larson, the daughter of Everett John Hanson and Eleanor Francis (Long) Hanson, was born September 2, 1936 in Beaver City, Nebraska and passed away on August 19, 2020 at her home in rural Scandia, Kansas at the age of 83 years, 11 months, and 17 days

Mary attended school at # 99, Kackley and graduated from Courtland High School.&nbsp; After graduation she attended Cosmetology School in Beatrice, Nebraska.&nbsp;

On March 31, 1957, she was united in marriage for 61 years to Richard A. Larson and to this union was born:&nbsp; Kevin, Diane, Michael, and Brent.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The couple made their home in rural Scandia on the family farm.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mary was a devoted Mother and farm wife.&nbsp;&nbsp; She also was a beautician and Activity Director.

Mary was an active member of the Amana Lutheran Church and the LCW.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Eleanor Hanson, her Husband, Richard in 2018; brother, John Hanson; Daughter-in-law, Katherine P. Larson; and Niece, Patricia Norton.

Mary is survived by three sons, &nbsp;Kevin (Michelle) Larson of Scandia, KS, Michael Larson (friend-Tracy) of Scandia, KS, and Brent (Melissa) Larson of Manhattan, KS; one daughter, Diane Larson-Floersch (Rob) of Clay Center, KS; 6 grandchildren: Dana (Kayla) Larson of Scandia, KS, Shanna (Nathan) Lindberg of Formoso, KS, Corbin Larson of Scandia, KS, Nathan (fiance’-Brooke) Larson of Memphis, TN, Kaylee Larson of Courtland, KS, and Richard Floersch of Lawrence, KS; 4 great grandchildren: Hudson &amp; Harlow Lindberg, Brylee &amp; Kinsley Larson;&nbsp; three sisters, Beverly Hosford of Irvine, California, Catherine Tebow of Courtland, KS, and Jeanette Norton of Paola, KS;&nbsp; and lifelong friend, Norma Nelson of Jamestown, KS;&nbsp; other relatives and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 5, 2020 at the Amana Lutheran Church, Scandia, KS with PMA’s Al Urich and Marilyn Dunstan, officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A private family inurnment service will be held prior to the memorial services at the Riverview Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp; No visitation is planned at the funeral home.

Friends may sign the register book prior to the services at the Church and the family will greet friends following the services.

Memorials are suggested to the Amana Lutheran Church or the Scandia Museum.

Betty F. Martindale (Wilkerson) was born on September 27, 1927, in Martinez, CA and passed from this world on August 20, 2020, in Oklahoma City, OK.

She was the youngest of 6 children born to Earl Lavanda Wilkerson and Cella Arthesia Wilkerson (Gallagher).

She graduated from Alhambra High School in Martinez in 1945. In August of the same year, she married Arrell Dean Martindale, after his return from the war. They raised 6 children in the next 17 years, traveling wherever the Army sent them. Retiring from the military in 1967, they moved permanently to Dean’s hometown of Phillipsburg, KS, where they lived until 2016 when poor health caused them to relocate.

Betty was a homemaker and her family meant everything to her. She worked part-time at the Mark V motel for 10 years. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She loved music of all kinds, but especially enjoyed the old gospel hymns she was raised on.

She was preceded in death by Dean, her beloved husband of 71 years, her parents and 5 siblings, her daughter Chris, her grandson Justin, her granddaughter Stephanie, and son-in-law Alancy.

She leaves behind 5 children: Joe of Salina, KS, Dean, Jr. and wife Pam of Oklahoma City, Patrick and wife Jean of Oklahoma City, Nicki Price of Shawnee, KS, and Roy and wife Sandra of Oklahoma City, 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Cremation was planned.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2020, at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.  The services will be streamed live on Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel Facebook page. 

Friends may sign the guest book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, September 18 at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect wanted on a felony warrant in Missouri on multiple charges after a traffic stop in Kansas.

Just after 11:15 p.m. Sunday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop near SE 29th&nbsp;and Croco Road in Shawnee County on a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta for an equipment violation, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.&nbsp;

The driver, Diandre L. Spates, Sr., 47, Topeka, was arrested and booked into jail on requested charges of&nbsp; felony possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony interference with a law enforcement officer and the felony warrant from Missouri.

&nbsp; June “Patty Jo” Elizabeth LeMay, 77, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2020. She was born June 12, 1943 in Florence, Kansas to Milton Alfred and Dorothy Marie (Kelly) Herzet. She graduated from Potwin High School. She married Jess “Jay” LeMay on May 20, 1966 at St. John’s Catholic Church in El Dorado, Kansas. To this union there were three children. Patty Jo was a member of the Potwin Methodist Church and enjoyed going out with a ladies group to eat dinner. Her loving family includes her husband, Jay LeMay of Potwin; son, Chris LeMay of Wichita; daughters, Melissa LeMay of Potwin; and Connie LeMay of Aurora, Colorado; brother, Kelly Herzet of Potwin; and a sister, Marsha Weilert (Kenny) of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents. A celebration of life service will be on Friday, August 28, at 10:00 am at the Potwin United Methodist Church. Inurnment will take place following the service at McGill Cemetery in Potwin, Kansas.
