SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just before midnight Wednesday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Polaris Magnum 4-wheeler in the 2300 block of NE Calhoun Bluff Road, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver identified as Randy D. Clelland, 60, of Topeka, was placed into custody and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a misdemeanor warrant through Shawnee County and is facing requested charges of&nbsp;possession of methamphetamine and a traffic violation.

Sheriff: Kansas man on ATV was transporting meth

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;The Kansas State University College of Education's Center for Social Studies Education is co-sponsoring a seven-week&nbsp;<a href="https://civiced.org/power-series-webinars" target="_blank">"Power to the People" webinar series</a>&nbsp;beginning Thursday.

The series offers experts addressing some of the most challenging issues in American society.

Topics include voting rights, monuments and flags, the Nineteenth Amendment, free speech, Supreme Court cases, social movements for change and Indian sovereignty. The&nbsp;series is designed for civics, government and U.S. history teachers who want to better understand these issues; however, the public is invited to attend. Advance registration is required.

Thomas Vontz, professor and director of the Center for Social Studies Education, said these topics are both timely and relevant.

"These webinars provide teachers, students and citizens opportunities to consider important public issues in a nonpartisan environment," Vontz said. "We also hope to help citizens understand that political power may be exerted by average citizens through exercising their rights of speech, association and voting. Democracy works best when citizens are informed, engaged and motivated to make their community, state, nation and world a little better."

CONCORDIA - With two meets in the books, the Cloud County Community College cross country teams have three individual titles, two team titles and now two Runners of the Week as Habtamu Geta and Patricia Koma have been named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and NJCAA Division I National runners of the week to open the season.

Geta's Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Runner of the Week came on September 9th as the sophomore would win the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic in Hutchinson to open the season with a time of 20:13.5 in the four-mile race which was the sixth-fastest time ever recorded at the meet. The Houston, Texas, native would go on this past week to earn his second straight victory with an individual title at the 2020 Ollie Isom Invitational in El Dorado with a time of 23:24.48.&nbsp;

Koma has been equally impressive in her first two starts of the season, notching a runner-up finish at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic in her first meet as a T-Bird before going on to take her first victory of the year at the Ollie Isom Invitational with a time of 19:50.42. Both meets would see the Cloud County women win the team titles as CCCC has managed to have 10 top-10 individual finishers throughout the first two weeks of the season.&nbsp;

The awards continue a now two-year plus long stretch where T-Bird runners have earned 14 Runner of the Week honors including eight KJCCC Runners of the Week and six National Runner of the Week awards.&nbsp;

Cloud County Cross Country runners earn Runner of the Week honors

EMPORIA -- The William Allen White Children's&nbsp;Book&nbsp;Awards will move to a virtual space for the 2020 celebration on Oct. 2.

"We truly want to make this year's celebration an inclusive event for as many schools as possible across the state," said Michelle Hammond, dean of ESU University Libraries and Archives, which organizes the WAW Children's&nbsp;Book&nbsp;Awards.

The 2020 winners of the awards are two authors whose&nbsp;books speak to personal identity. Kansas schoolchildren in Grades 3 through 5 selected "Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus" by Dusti Bowling, while students in Grades 6 through 8 selected "Restart" by Gordon Korman.

"Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus" tell the story of Aven Green, a girl who was born without arms and is tired of answering questions about them. When her parents take a job running Stagecoach Pass, a rundown Western theme park in Arizona, Aven knows she will face more questions in her new home.

Aven's new adventure includes making friends with Connor, a classmate with his own disability, and together solving the mystery of a special room at Stagecoach Pass.

"Restart" is the story of Chase, a school bully who gets a do-over thanks to falling off the roof of his house. Because of amnesia, he doesn't remember more than his name. When he returns to school, he doesn't understand why the kids he wants to hang out with are scared of him.

Chase has to face not the question of who he is, but who he was - and who he wants to be now.

The first weekend in October is the traditional date to celebrate these awards. The event brings buses of schoolchildren from across the state, with those traveling the furthest arriving on Friday and spending the night.

For the 68th annual celebration, the COVID-19 pandemic with its limits on large gatherings and requirements for social distancing has provided an opportunity, Hammond said.

"This online environment could potentially provide us with a much greater reach," she said.

The William Allen White Children's&nbsp;Book&nbsp;Award program began April 22, 1952, eight years after the famed journalist's death on Jan. 29, 1944 - Kansas Day. Emporia State University launched the William Allen White Children's&nbsp;Book&nbsp;Award, which was guided by Ruth Garver Gagliardo, who was hired by White to write for The Emporia Gazette.

Passionate about&nbsp;books, Gagliardo wrote a regular column that commented on&nbsp;books, music and art, and often concentrated on&nbsp;books for children. She was one of the first to review children's&nbsp;books for a newspaper, which gave parents, teachers and librarians insights to quality&nbsp;books for children.

Gagliardo's column led to "The Children's&nbsp;Bookshelf," a&nbsp;book&nbsp;review column in the Kansas Teacher magazine. She also started the Children's Traveling&nbsp;Book&nbsp;Exhibit, which helped introduce children all over Kansas to good&nbsp;books for 23 years.

Annual WAW Book Awards celebration will be virtual

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two cases of sexual assault and after a 7-hour standoff have a suspect in custody.

On August 29, Wichita police began a sexual assault and robbery investigation following an incident reported in the 6100 Block of East Boston, according to Captain Jason Stephens. 

Two victims reported an attempted robbery at gunpoint. The female victims reported the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Patrick Newborn of Wichita, had committed a sexual assault against her one to two weeks earlier, according to Stephens.

On Sept. 13, police investigated another sexual assault involving a different victim at a residence in the 700 Block of South Pershing in Wichita. Investigators determined the cases were likely connected and later confirmed that.

On Tuesday police learned that Newborn was wanted on a felony warrant for being a parole absconder, according to Stephens. Officers located him Tuesday in 9100 Block of East Harry in Wichita. Upon confronting him, Newborn pulled a handgun and threatened the officers.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a reported sexual assault of a 32-year-old woman at a home in Wichita.

At approximately 12:00 a.m., Saturday, police were dispatched to a burglary in progress call in the 700 block of South Pershing, according to officer Paul Cruz.

Upon their arrival, they contacted the 32-year-old female victim, who reported an unknown, armed male suspect entered her residence.

Once inside the suspect demanded money, sexually assaulted her, and left.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Also, inside the residence were two small children.&nbsp;

The female victims reported the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Patrick Newborn of Wichita, had committed a sexual assault against her one to two weeks earlier, according to Stephens.On Sept. 13, police investigated another sexual assault involving a different victim at a residence in the 700 Block of South Pershing in Wichita. Investigators determined the cases were likely connected and later confirmed that.<figure>

Today in History -- Sept. 16

Troy Leon Rawson, 71, died unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep, Thursday, September 10, 2020.  He was born April 21, 1949 in Walter Reed General Hospital, Washington D.C.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy Rawson and Billie Joyce (Lynch) Rawson and his beloved sister Joyce Elaine Wise. 

 Leon is survived by his wife of 30yrs, Terre (McRae) Rawson, his son Troy (Genevieve) Rawson Jr. of Novato, CA; and his daughter Bobi Lee (Jason)Dearinger of Severn, MD.  Surviving siblings include 5 brothers and 2 sisters:  David (Debra) Rawson of Petaluma, CA; Thomas Ray (Roberta) Rawson of Whitehall, MT; Philip (Missy) Rawson of Anderson, CA; Larry (Hui) Rawson of Rohnert Park, CA; Debbie (David) Adams of Petaluma, CA; Cathy (Joel) Casazza of Petaluma, CA; and, Stephen (Barbara) Rawson of Kaufman, TX.  Surviving mothers of Leon’s precious son and daughter are Janis (Showalter) Menicucci of Santa Rosa, CA (Troy’s mom); and Linda Vaughn of Cotati, CA (Bobi’s mom).   

Surviving Grandchildren are Ryan, Kai &amp; Alana Maria of Novato, CA and Connor Uth of AZ.  Surviving also are many nieces and nephews, too many to name.  As a man who was so into his family, he cherished the contact and was often found texting and face-booking at all hours with them.  Special mention is made of Leon’s nephew, Kenny (Tracy) Wise of TX, who arrived to assist with preparations.

Leon was a 1967 graduate of Petaluma High School, Petaluma, CA.  He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Paul Revere as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class.  After serving his country, he returned to work as a machinist for KVAL Machinery.  This was a career that began at age 16, when he was hired to sweep up the scrap shavings.  It was interrupted with his naval service and then ended years later at age 67 after serving multiple positions for the company as Journeyman, Plant Manager, and ultimately traveling machinist.   He was often referred to as “Leon the Legend” and on the date of his departure for Kansas, the KVAL family threw a party and noted that “Leon the Legend” had left the building.  He retired on 6/30/2017 from this company, who had become an extension of his own family over many years.  

One will never find someone more patriotic than Leon Rawson.  He loves this country and the many freedoms that it provides.  He has always been an avid outdoorsman, family man, provider and just a person that makes you feel better about the person that you are.

LaDonna’s life began October 12, 1939 in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was the oldest daughter born to James Elton and Donna (Hill) Hess.&nbsp; 

She graduated from Clay Center High School in 1957.&nbsp; 

She was united in marriage to William J. “Bill” Sherbert on May 31, 1959 in Wakefield KS.&nbsp; 

LaDonna and Bill moved to Marion in 1964 where she was a stay at home mom for a while, then went to working at Charlies Burger Shake in Marion for many years.&nbsp; 

In 1979, after teaching herself to type with a manual typewriter, she was hired on by Marion SRS Office as an Office Assistant, and proudly kept the position for 25 years, retiring in 2004.&nbsp; 

LaDonna was an avid bowler, bowling 3 times a week at one point, and enjoyed attending state and national bowling tournaments. LaDonna and Bill decided to purchase Mar Bowl Lanes, later at Sher Bowl Lanes, in 2003, and later building on Willy J’s 9th Lane Sports Bar in 2008.&nbsp; 

She loved to watch the K C Royals, and KU basketball.&nbsp; 

LaDonna loved to sing and was involved with Sweet Adeline’s acapella choir for several years.&nbsp; She enjoyed playing the lottery, sending out sweepstake entries, and dancing to a George Strait song, sometimes by herself. 

She leaves behind her husband Bill, of 61 years, of Marion, her daughter Donna (Randy) Bryant, and son Daniel Sherbert; all of Marion.&nbsp; Grandchildren, Dustin (Summer) Sherbert, Jayden Hallowell, Ryan (Leigh) Funk, Jason (Tiffany) Funk, Joshua (Dawnell) Funk. Great grandchildren, Faith, Lilly, Elyssa, Kayden, Rylin, Kylus, Draven, Josell with number nine on the way. Also, her siblings, RoseMary Reece, Jean (Lon) Paquette, Eltanis (Ted) Volen and Butch (Nicole) Hess, as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; 

LaDonna passed away suddenly on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at St. Luke Hospital in Marion.&nbsp; 

She is proceeded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Lyndsay Rae Sherbert and sister, Betty Lou Gingles. 

Visitation will be Tuesday September 15th, 2pm to 7 pm, with family from 5-7pm at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion.&nbsp; Her graveside service will be held Wednesday September 16th at 11a.m. at Marion Cemetery.&nbsp; Masks are optional.&nbsp; Family and friends are invited to a gathering at Daniel Sherbert’s house afterwards for meal and to reminisce.

Memorial contributions in LaDonna’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
