RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have made an arrest.

Just after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to 623 East Avenue F in Hutchinson in reference to a shooting, according to a media release.

 When officers arrived, they located 37-year-old Bryan Stallworth with a single gunshot wound to his chest. Stallworth was later transferred to a Wichita area hospital in stable condition.

The investigation revealed that the shooting occurred at 620 East Avenue F and was the result of an altercation between Stallworth and an acquaintance identified as 31-year-old Levi Wickliffe. 

Wickliffe fled the scene. Police located him several blocks away, arrested him and booked him into the Reno County Jail on requested charges of attempted 2nd degree intentional murder.&nbsp;

Just after 8a.m. Tuesday, police responded to the area of Lakin Avenue and Van Buren in Great Bend in reference to an unknown subject entering into vehicles without permission.

While Officers were responding to the area, the subject identified as Jericho Riddle, age 20, fled the area on foot. Officers stopped Riddle on the west side of the Travelodge Hotel at room #105 located in the 3200 block of 10th Street.

Riddle was found to be in possession of stolen property and detained. The Travelodge Hotel room #105 was secured and the detectives obtained a search warrant for Riddle's hotel room. The search warrant was executed and items of evidence were located and seized at that time.

Riddle was arrested on requested charges of burglary and criminal trespass. Riddle was then transported to the Barton County Detention Center and booked in lieu of bond.

Topeka man arrested on multiple requested drug charges

Today in History -- Nov. 24

Dorothy Marie McCarty was born on May 24, 1930, on her parent’s farm, near Courtland, Kansas. The daughter of Clarence and Neta (Kingsbury) Haney, Dorothy attended Courtland schools, graduating from Courtland High School in 1948.

Following high school, Dorothy married Donovan L. McCarty on September 20, 1952, at the Courtland Methodist Church. To this union of 50 years, two sons were born. Dorothy and Don bought their first, and only house, on O Street in 1952, at a time when there were no other houses in that part of town. They lived in this house their entire lifetime.

During her lifetime, Dorothy worked for various employers, include the Belleville Telephone Company, JC Penny’s, Food Mart, Arbuthnots and the Travel Information Center.

In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and extended family, playing cards with friends, and visiting casinos every so often. She was also an avid sports fan, following the local schools, K-State football, KU Basketball, the Kansas City Chief and Kansas City Royals.

Dorothy peacefully passed from this life in Washington, Kansas, on November 20, 2020, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 27 days.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Donovan in 2003, her brother Philip Haney and sister-in-law Glorine Haney.

She will be forever remembered by her sons, Donovan L. (Mac) McCarty II, and Gary L. McCarty, both of Belleville. Dorothy is also survived by her many cousins and extended family, and a community of friends.

Friends may sign Dorothy’s book on Friday, November 27th, from 1pm – 8pm, at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, where the family will greet friends from 6pm – 8pm.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 28th, at 2:00 pm, at the Belleville City Cemetery.

Family and friends are encouraged to wear casual attire to the services.

Persons attending the services are requested to wear masks or other facial coverings, and to practice social distancing at all times. Family and friends unable to attend the services are encouraged to express their condolences and leave memories on Dorothy’s Tribute Wall, on her obituary page, on the funeral home website.

Elaine Marie Cottam, the daughter of Edward E. Pelesky and Anna Victoria (Blecha) Pelesky, was born March 26, 1941 in Narka, KS and passed away on November 21, 2020 at CHI St. Mary’s at Nebraska City, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 25 days.

Elaine grew up and attended the local public school of Narka, KS graduating from Narka High School.&nbsp; In her early years, she worked at Foote’s Cafe in Chester, NE.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She later worked for MC Industries in Belleville for several years.&nbsp; Elaine later worked at Swedes’ in Hubbell, NE and Mary’s in Hebron, NE as a cook and waitress.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She owned and operated the Hop Along Bar in Gilead, NE for several years and later managed the VFW in Hebron for a time until her retirement.

In 1963, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Cottam.

Elaine was a former member of the United Methodist Church, Hubbell, NE

Elaine's greatest passion in her retirement years were her grandkids.&nbsp; She provided everything they needed and gave them everything they wanted. Her doors were always open and if not, the grandkids knew where the key was!&nbsp; Her house was the place to go after school, after practice or just the place to get glamorized for homecoming or prom. She made sure whatever they liked to eat, or drink was on hand even if it meant she did not have something for herself.&nbsp; Any mending that needed to be done was taken care of and if you needed your clothes washed, she was on top of it. If Elaine knew the kids were going to her house after school, she would be there waiting to pick them up, even though her house was only three blocks from the school. Elaine's kids knew that she was the one person they could always count on and the kids/grandkids never left the house without a hug and a “I Love you”.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anna Pelesky.

She is survived by her children:&nbsp;&nbsp;Kent (Kim) Cottam of Hebron, NE, Kathy Broers of Chester, NE, Kevin (Jani) Cottam of Hebron, NE, and Kristy (Eric) Mathiesen of Hebron, NE; Grandchildren:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jordan, Jay(Bailey), and Jena Cottam. Brittany(Trevor) Wit, Broderick(Byranna) Bowman, Tanner Broers, Taylor Broers, Ethan Hudson, Sydney Cottam, Cambrie Cottam, Paige(Joshua) Yoachim, and Hunter Mathiesen; 5 Great grandchildren; other relatives, and friends.

Private family funeral services will be held Friday, November 27, 2020 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS, with Reverend Keith Brozek, officiating.

Inurnment will follow at the National Cemetery, Narka, Kansas.

Pelesky and Anna Victoria (Blecha) Pelesky, was born March 26, 1941 in Narka, KS and passed away on November 21, 2020 at CHI St. Mary’s at Nebraska City, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 7 months, and 25 days.Elaine grew up and attended the local public school of Narka, KS graduating from Narka High School.&nbsp; In her early years, she worked at Foote’s Cafe in Chester, NE.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She later worked for MC Industries in Belleville for several years.&nbsp; Elaine later worked at Swedes’ in Hubbell, NE and Mary’s in Hebron, NE as a cook and waitress.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She owned and operated the Hop Along Bar in Gilead, NE for several years and later managed the VFW in Hebron for a time until her retirement.In 1963, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Cottam.Elaine was a former member of the United Methodist Church, Hubbell, NEElaine's greatest passion in her retirement years were her grandkids.&nbsp; She provided everything they needed and gave them everything they wanted. Her doors were always open and if not, the grandkids knew where the key was!&nbsp; Her house was the place to go after school, after practice or just the place to get glamorized for homecoming or prom. She made sure whatever they liked to eat, or drink was on hand even if it meant she did not have something for herself.&nbsp; Any mending that needed to be done was taken care of and if you needed your clothes washed, she was on top of it. If Elaine knew the kids were going to her house after school, she would be there waiting to pick them up, even though her house was only three blocks from the school. JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities&nbsp;&nbsp;had been looking for a suspicious person and vehicle that had been reported just after 5 a.m. Sunday in Holton, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

Shortly after, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy located the suspect later identified as Rashone Christopher Terrell, 37, of Topeka and vehicle near 5th&nbsp;and Pennsylvania Street in Holton. 

Police also learned the vehicle, a 1998 Honda Civic, had been reported stolen from the Stormont Vail parking lot in Topeka, according to Morse.

The deputy attempted to stop the Honda when a short pursuit ensued inside the City of Holton. 

The vehicle stopped in the 600 block of Ohio Street. Deputies arrested Terrell, transported him to the Jackson County Jail and booked him into the Jail on requested charges of possession of stolen property, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer and driving while suspended. Terrell was also wanted on outstanding Shawnee County warrants, according to Morse.

Kan. police officer arrested for alleged DUI 

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas felon on new charges after a traffic stop in Barton County.

Just after 5 p.m. November 20, an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 1400 block of 16th Street on a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, according to a media release.

During the stop, police service dog, Menta, was deployed and conducted a free air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. After performing the sniff, K-9 Menta alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and police located a substantial amount of Methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and guns.&nbsp;

Officers arrested 30-year-old Joel Munoz and transported him to the Barton County Jail and booked him with no bond.

Munoz has previous convictions for drugs and weapons and was listed as an absconder, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) - Authorities arrested a 23-year-old man in an attack at a Nebraska fast food restaurant in which two people were shot and killed, two were wounded and officers responding to a report of a possible bomb inside a moving truck in the parking lot arrived to find the vehicle on fire.

Roberto Carlos Silva Jr., of Omaha, was booked into Sarpy County jail early Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder and first-degree arson in Saturday night's attack at a Sonic Drive-in restaurant in Bellevue. Silva was being held without bond Sunday before making his initial court appearance.

In a news release early Sunday, Lt. Andy Jashinske said Bellevue police received a call at 9:23 p.m. Saturday about a possible bomb in a U-Haul truck parked outside of the restaurant in the Omaha suburb. A minute later, the call was updated to a possible shooting, he said.

Officers who arrived found the moving truck burning and four people who had been shot. Two were sent to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for treatment and the other two were declared dead at the scene, Jashinske said. The victims' names were withheld so that their families could be told first.

Video&nbsp;tweeted by Omaha TV station KETV&nbsp;showed crews battling the truck fire late Saturday. The Omaha Police Department's bomb squad was at the scene early Sunday to check on a "device," as a precaution to make sure the area was safe, Jashinske said.

The attack came days after Silva was arrested outside of the restaurant after allegedly using someone else's Sonic app account to buy a total of $57 worth of hamburgers and corn dogs in four separate purchases at that location, the World-Herald reported. Silva was released from jail on Thursday after posting 10% of his $1,500 bail. At the time of that arrest, police seized three firearms from Silva, Jashinske said Sunday.

Officials at Sonic's headquarters in Oklahoma didn't immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press on Sunday.

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) - Two people died and two others were wounded in a shooting at a fast-food restaurant in Nebraska where police had been called to investigate a "possible bomb" inside a moving truck in the parking lot.

A suspect was taken into custody shortly after officers arrived at the Sonic Drive-In restaurant in Bellevue late Saturday night, Lt. Andy Jashinske said in a news release. Police did not identify the suspect.

Officers found four people with gunshot wounds after arriving at the restaurant, Jashinske said. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were taken to hospitals for treatment. None of the four were immediately identified.

Video obtained by news outlets showed a vehicle on fire in the parking lot of the Sonic Drive-In. Jashinske told reporters the fire may have been ignited by "some fireworks or some type of device," but investigators were still looking in to the cause.

Update: 2 dead after shooting at Nebraska Sonic Drive-In 

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple felony charges following a weekend pursuit and standoff.

Just after 11a.m.Saturday, a deputy responded to the 3800 block of NW 16th Street to check on an erratic driver, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 The deputy located a silver Dodge Caravan and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Theresa A. Cook, 40 of Topeka, refused to stop and initiated a pursuit. 

The Caravan came to a stop in a cornfield near NW 75 Highway. The deputy, his K9 partner and multiple law enforcement officers were on scene. A brief standoff ensued before Cook was taken into custody. 

The only other occupant of the Caravan, a dog, was safely removed from the vehicle. No one was injured during this incident.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple felony charges following a weekend pursuit and standoff.Just after 11a.m.Saturday, a deputy responded to the 3800 block of NW 16th Street to check on an erratic driver, according to Deputy Abigail Christian. The deputy located a silver Dodge Caravan and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Theresa A. Cook, 40 of Topeka, refused to stop and initiated a pursuit. The Caravan came to a stop in a cornfield near NW 75 Highway. The deputy, his K9 partner and multiple law enforcement officers were on scene. A brief standoff ensued before Cook was taken into custody. The only other occupant of the Caravan, a dog, was safely removed from the vehicle. Abilene- Jason R. Zook, 96, passed away Thursday, November 19, 2020 in Salina. He was born April 24, 1924 in Abilene, Kansas to Bruce and Susan Zook. 

On April 8, 1948 he married Nellie Switzer Zook. Most of their married life was spent north of Abilene where they farmed. He also worked at Abilene Middle School after retiring from farming. 

He was a member of the Abilene Brethren In Christ Church. 

Jason was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years Nellie, a grandson, Christopher Rosendahl, and three siblings, Bert, Clyde and Eunice. 

He is survived by his sister, Lola Zook of Salina, his daughter Deanna (Mike) Rosendahl of Algonquin, Illinois, his son Dennis (Lisa) Zook of Abilene, Kansas, and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. 

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 24th at Abilene Brethren In Christ Church with Pastor Dale Engle officiating. Interment will follow in the Abilene Cemetery. Friends may come by to sign the book anytime Monday from 9AM until 7PM at Danner Funeral Home in Abilene. Masks will be required. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name to be made to Brethren in Christ Missions. They may be left at the church the day of the service or left or sent in care of Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, Abilene, Kansas 67410

Salina Art Center was recently awarded the Excellence in Graphic Design Award from the Kansas Museums Association. 

The work by&nbsp;Abby&nbsp;Crawford, in-house graphic artist for the Art Center, was created as part of "Birdwatchers" a summer exhibition by artist Fidencio Fifield-Perez."

Abby&nbsp;creates beautiful&nbsp;work. Her materials are vehicles to share information with our audiences both in-person and online. From hand-stitching books to designing the title graphic by hand,&nbsp;Abby&nbsp;did a superb job of respecting the artist, celebrating his work, and creating a well-branded exhibition." Fidencio Fifield-Perez creates art that reflects his experience as a Latino immigrant in America. His mixed-media art is inspired by everyday life and examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them. When planning the exhibition, the Art Center commissioned an essay by Ruslana Lichtzier. Together, Ruslana and Fidencio developed the Birdwatchers exhibition title.&nbsp;Abby developed an identity for the exhibition and surrounding programming that would connect, engage, inform, and challenge audiences while respecting and celebrating the talents of the artist and writer. In one of her early Zoom meetings with Fidencio,&nbsp;Abby&nbsp;was able to explore his work through images and listen to what he said about each. After that meeting, Abby&nbsp;developed the base “Birdwatchers” title designed with a handmade font. In that one small design element,&nbsp;Abby&nbsp;mimicked elements present in Fidencio’s own drawings and weavings. From there, she continued to design a series of digital and print materials branded with a unique style very connected to the artist’s work. She used envelope motifs, weaving patterns, and color schemes that complemented the work in the gallery and created a social media presence that was easily identifiable as “Birdwatchers.”

The highlight of her design skill for this exhibition was a limited-edition exhibition guide. The guide was presented in a branded manila envelope, a nod to Fidencio’s “dacaments.” The 24-page guide was hand-stitched and included images of work in the exhibition. The guide also contained a full version of the essay by Ruslana Lichtzier, artist bios, exhibition statement from Gretchen Boyum, and funding recognitions. All print materials for the exhibition were printed in both English and Spanish.&nbsp;

On this date: In 1920, the Irish Republican Army killed 12 British intelligence officers and two auxiliary policemen in the Dublin area; British forces responded by raiding a soccer match, killing 14 civilians. In 1922, Rebecca L. Felton, a Georgia Democrat, was sworn in as the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate; her term, the result of an interim appointment, ended the following day as Walter F. Just before 11p.m. Wednesday, a deputy made contact with the driver of a suspicious vehicle, a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup, located in the 400 block of east 14th Street in Auburn, Kansas. according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon for new charges after an arrest.Just before 11p.m. Wednesday, a deputy made contact with the driver of a suspicious vehicle, a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup, located in the 400 block of east 14th Street in Auburn, Kansas. according to Deputy Abigail Christian. The pickup was parked near storage units. During the investigation at the scene, deputies found two storage units that had been entered by force. Several stolen items were located in the back of the pickup.Deputies arrested Zackery W. Slover, 38, Topeka, and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine, Burglary, Theft, Criminal damage to property, Criminal trespass, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear and Other registration violations, according to Christian.
