A variety of pop-up art installations in downtown Salina are closing out National Arts &amp; Humanities Month in the city.

Salina
Arts &amp; Humanities (SAH) commissioned eight local artists to create pop-up
installations in downtown Salina to celebrate National Arts &amp; Humanities Month and to inspire others about
how the arts can be created at home and in safe ways during the COVID-19
pandemic. Many of the installations are still available to view and will remain
through Saturday. The downtown arts installations by artist, title and
location are as follows.

●Cori Sherman North, yarn, “Waiting for the
Green New Deal” at 131 N. Santa Fe Ave.
Giant vines and leaves are woven across a framework in a colorful, autumnal
spectrum of green, yellow, gold, orange, red, and brown, that ends with
skeletal leaf remains. North said, “I see this work as showing the seasons
passing, as we anxiously await concerted action on our climate crisis.”

●Marideth
Highsmith,
yarn, “Labyrinth for a Feast” at Spilman
Plaza, 228 S. Santa Fe Ave.
Since Halloween is a favorite holiday for her, when asked to do a yarn
installation, Highsmith found the perfect yarn and location for a huge spider
web. Highsmith said, “Spider webs have always been fascinating to me; so much
beauty and time put into something used to catch a spider's food.”

●Danielle Houltberg, yarn, “Hope of the Honeybee,” also in Spilman Plaza, 228 S. Santa
Fe Ave. Houltberg said, “My inspiration behind this work stems from my
interest in the work being done to save the world’s bee populations.&nbsp; It
uses the connection between current research on the positive effects mushroom
mycelium have on virus reduction in honey bees, and the hope this discovery
offers for turning around their population decrease.”

●Darren Morawitz, chalk, “Kraken,” Phillips Plaza
at 136 N. Santa Fe Ave. Inspired by
his interest in Greek mythology, Morawitz said, “I wanted my piece to interact
with the environment and create a more immersive experience with the viewers.
This creature of myth had a great avenue for me to use its tentacles to wrap
and crawl among the pavement and stones.”

●Kimberly Vega,
chalk, “Ofrenda, Opfergabe, Offering,” in the plaza next to Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Ave. Depicting
and celebrating the lives of loved ones who have passed, Vega said, “To keep
the cultures of my children alive, I have re-searched and participated&nbsp;in
many events. One of our beloved events is Day of the Dead celebrations. As I
worked on this piece&nbsp;with my daughter, we paid homage to those we have loved
and admired.”

poetry with chalk and Rainworks, “Concrete Poetry,” Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Ave., at the

said “The three poems were written as epiphanies during turbulent times in my
life… I am hopeful that my articulation will be a light to those still
experiencing darkness.”

poetry on sticker paper, “Poet-Tree,” downtown greenery. Brack used excerpts by
American poets in trees in her week-long installation “Poet-Tree” at five
locations downtown. “These poems speak kinds of hope that aren't always easily
defined,” Brack said. During the week of October 10, the “Poet-Tree” poems were placed
daily, with location clues posted to social media.&nbsp;

National Arts &amp; Humanities Month, established
in 1993, is celebrated every October in the U.S. It is designed to encourage
communities, families and individuals to explore new facets of the arts and
humanities and help them begin or strengthen lifelong habits or arts
participation

Pop-up art installations closing out National Arts & Humanities Month

WASHINGTON (AP) — With next week’s election looming, the CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and Google were scolded by Republicans at a Senate hearing Wednesday for alleged anti-conservative bias in the companies’ social media platforms and received a warning of coming restrictions from Congress.

Lawmakers of both parties are assessing the companies’ tremendous power to disseminate speech and ideas, and are looking to challenge their long-enjoyed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/d3e09c4037e2fc17558492b9bdce1ecc">bedrock legal protections</a>&nbsp;for online speech.

The Trump administration, seizing on unfounded accusations of bias against conservative views, has asked Congress to strip some of the protections that have generally shielded the tech companies from legal responsibility for what people post on their platforms.

“The time has come for that free pass to end,” said Sen. Roger Wicker, chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. He spoke at the opening of the hearing as Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sundar Pichai waited to testify via video.

Wicker cited the move this month by Facebook and Twitter to limit dissemination of an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-joe-biden-donald-trump-ukraine-elections-134406f28e826380924bbcf773d2c05a">unverified political story</a>&nbsp;from the conservative-leaning New York Post about Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The story, which was not confirmed by other publications, cited unverified emails from Biden’s son Hunter that were reportedly disclosed by Trump allies.

Republicans led by President Donald Trump have accused the social media platforms, without evidence, of deliberately suppressing conservative, religious and anti-abortion views.

In their prepared testimony, Dorsey, Zuckerberg and Pichai addressed the proposals for changes to a provision of a 1996 law that has served as the foundation for unfettered speech on the internet. Critics in both parties say that immunity under Section 230 enables the social media companies to abdicate their responsibility to impartially moderate content.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that Congress “should update the law to make sure it’s working as intended.”

Dorsey and Pichai urged caution in making any changes. “Undermining Section 230 will result in far more removal of online speech and impose severe limitations on our collective ability to address harmful content and protect people online,” Dorsey said.

Pichai appealed to lawmakers “to be very thoughtful about any changes to Section 230 and to be very aware of the consequences those changes might have on businesses and consumers.”

The session lacked the in-person drama of star-witness proceedings before the coronavirus. The hearing room was nearly empty except for Wicker and a few colleagues, but their questioning was sharp as tempers flared among members.

“Twitter’s conduct has by far been the most egregious,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Dorsey. Cruz cited Twitter’s limitations on the newspaper story as part of “a pattern of censorship and silencing Americans with whom Twitter disagrees.”

Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, went after Republicans, saying the hearing was a “sham.”

“This is bullying,” Schatz told the CEOs. “Do not let U.S. senators bully you into carrying the water” for politicians seeking to discredit their opponents. With their questions, Schatz said, the Republicans “are trying to bully the heads of private companies into making a hit job” on political leaders

Trump earlier this year signed an executive order challenging the protections from lawsuits under the 1996 telecommunications law.

Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd told congressional leaders in a letter Tuesday that recent events have made the changes more urgent, and said the restrictions by Twitter and Facebook related to the newspaper story was “quite concerning.”

Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, an independent agency, recently announced&nbsp;<a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-367567A1.pdf" target="_blank">plans to reexamine</a>&nbsp;the legal protections — an about-face from the agency’s previous position.

Social media giants are also under heavy scrutiny for their efforts to police&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-donald-trump-politics-media-misinformation-7a60e1e6005c8b3b967c9ad337cb1a6a">misinformation about the election</a>. Twitter and Facebook have imposed a misinformation label on content from the president, who has about 80 million followers. Trump has raised&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-ap-fact-check-joe-biden-donald-trump-virus-outbreak-867740a2e552b8b3d9d409c0d0ea5170">the baseless prospect of mass fraud</a>&nbsp;in the vote-by-mail process.

Starting Tuesday, Facebook didn’t accept any new political advertising. Previously booked political ads will be able to run until the polls close Nov. 3, when all political advertising will temporarily be banned. Google, which owns YouTube, also is halting political ads after the polls close. Twitter banned all political ads last year.

Fall is winding down on our farm. Brown grass is hidden beneath piles of colorful leaves that have fallen. Wheat drilled last month has popped up providing a spiky looking cover to fields for the winter. Corn and soybeans have been harvested and shipped off to the elevator. By the time you read this, we may even have had a dusting of snow. But — a single field of double-crop milo remains uncut. It could take weeks before it is dry enough to harvest. This one field has caused a disproportionate amount of anxiety. Even though all the other work is done, harvest season cannot be complete without it. Equipment can’t be winterized, paperwork can’t be finalized, and the weight of unfinished work sits heavy in our house. It seems like so much of this year has been spent in a similar state. Waiting anxiously to see what will happen with COVID-19 when we just want to get back to “normal” life. Counting down the days until the election and the merciful end of campaign ads. Watching our fellow humans so frustrated by inequality that violence erupts in the streets and wondering helplessly how to make it stop. All this seems to have led to many of us feeling “over it”, where anxiety and frustration create a mental fatigue and you just don’t care anymore how it turn out as long as it is over.&nbsp; The problem with this apathy is that it can cause you to forget to stop and appreciate the value of an ending. Endings can be satisfying. Like the feeling that comes from indulging in large gulps for air after you sprinted across the finish line, the satisfying swish and thud of the hard cover closing when you have finished a good book, or making a joyful “Victory March” across the stage to receive your diploma. Endings can also be disappointing. The feeling of defeat that comes from losing a playoff game to end your high school athletic career. The regret of a missed opportunity. Getting the devastating news of a friend or loved one’s life being unexpectedly cut short. To truly value endings, you must recognize that our final ending is that of life. All the other endings are leading to that one and it will probably come sooner than most of us would like. So, when I find myself feeling apathetic or anxiously waiting for an ending, I try to stop and appreciate the moment: imagining an end and pondering how it can bring me joy or teach me an important lesson. I reflect on how past satisfactions or disappointments made me who I am and motivate me through the promise or threat of how things will end. Each ending fills our life with experience and opens a space for another beginning. Next week the 2020 campaign season will come to an end. There will be winners and losers.&nbsp; In the future, COVID outbreaks will be controlled and the world should go back to some kind of normal. Racial inequalities can even be overcome. And harvest on our farm will eventually be finished. For now, I am going to appreciate the lessons of this crazy year and dream of all the wonderful endings in my future.

Wheat drilled last month has popped up providing a spiky looking cover to fields for the winter. Corn and soybeans have been harvested and shipped off to the elevator. By the time you read this, we may even have had a dusting of snow. But — a single field of double-crop milo remains uncut. It could take weeks before it is dry enough to harvest. This one field has caused a disproportionate amount of anxiety. Even though all the other work is done, harvest season cannot be complete without it. Equipment can’t be winterized, paperwork can’t be finalized, and the weight of unfinished work sits heavy in our house. It seems like so much of this year has been spent in a similar state. Insight: Pondering endings

Today is Wednesday, Oct. 28, the 302nd day of 2020. There are 64 days left in the year. 

On Oct. 28, 1962, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev informed the United States that he had ordered the dismantling of missile bases in Cuba; in return, the U.S. secretly agreed to remove nuclear missiles from U.S. installations in Turkey. 

In 1858, Rowland Hussey Macy opened his first New York store at Sixth Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan. 

In 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland. 

In 1922, fascism came to Italy as Benito Mussolini took control of the government. 

In 1940, Italy invaded Greece during World War II. 

In 1976, former Nixon aide John D. Ehrlichman entered a federal prison camp in Safford, Arizona, to begin serving his sentence for Watergate-related convictions (he was released in April 1978). 

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter and Republican presidential nominee Ronald Reagan faced off in a nationally broadcast, 90-minute debate in Cleveland. 

In 1996, Richard Jewell, cleared of committing the Olympic park bombing, held a news conference in Atlanta in which he thanked his mother for standing by him and lashed out at reporters and investigators who'd depicted him as the bomber, who turned out to be Eric Rudolph.

In 2001, the families of people killed in the September 11 terrorist attack gathered in New York for a memorial service filled with prayer and song.

One year ago: A wildfire swept through the star-studded hills of Los Angeles, destroying several large homes and forcing LeBron James and thousands of others to flee; a blaze in Northern California wine country exploded in size. The S&amp;P 500 closed at an all-time high for the first time in months; the Nasdaq composite was also near a record.

Today in History -- Oct. 28

Following a dominant 55-14 win in over in-state rival KU, Kansas State is back in action this Saturday on the road as the Wildcats face West Virginia at Milan Puskar Stadium. 

The game kicks off at 11 a.m., and will be shown on ESPN2 with Roy Philpott (play-by-play), Kelly Stouffer (analyst) and Dr. Jerry Punch (sidelines) on the call. Fans can also catch the game on SiriusXM (S: 83, X: 83, Internet: 83) in addition to the TuneIn app.

• K-State improved to 4-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2014 following a dominant performance against Kansas, its 12th straight win over the in-state rival Jayhawks.

• The victory was impressive considering the Wildcats scored twice on special teams, once a defense and had a balanced offensive attack.

• Will Howard is the first K-State true freshman signal caller to win his first two starts at quarterback.

• Another true freshman, running back Deuce Vaughn, continues to impress as he leads the team in rushing and receiving, the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both categories.

• Vaughn is also the only player in the nation to eclipse 300 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards in 2020.

• K-State is currently plus-8 in turnovers, which is tied for second in the nation. The Wildcats lost their first turnover of the year in the third quarter at TCU, but they quickly made amends later in the quarter against the Horned Frogs thanks to a pick six from senior AJ Parker, which proved to be the difference in the game.

• In the last two games, the Wildcats have scored two touchdowns via punt returns and have also had two interception-return touchdowns – one by Parker and the other by Justin Gardner last week.

• A pair of senior linebackers from Georgia in Elijah Sullivan (30) and Justin Hughes (28) are the Wildcats’ top two tacklers.

• A total of 15 Cats have tallied at least a half tackle for loss, while seven players have at least one sack. The list includes junior Wyatt Hubert, who ranks seventh nationally among active players in career sacks per game (0.50).

• Safety Jahron McPherson and Gardner lead the team with a pair of interceptions, which is tied for third in the Big 12.

• Kansas State’s special teams ranks first nationally in efficiency among teams that have played multiple games according to ESPN thanks in large part to a blocked kick in each of the first four games and two punt return scores against Kansas by Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week Phillip Brooks.

• Senior place kicker Blake Lynch is 7-for-10 for the year but 2-for-2 from 50 or more yards. He connected on a game-winning 50-yard field goal at Oklahoma, while he set a new career long with a 53-yarder at TCU.

• West Virginia is coming off a 34-27 loss to Texas Tech in Lubbock last week to fall to 3-2 on the year and 2-2 in Big 12 play.

• The Mountaineer defense ranks first in the Big 12 in both total defense (261.8 yards/game) and passing defense (152.6 yards/game).

• Additionally, WVU is second in the Big 12 in scoring defense (21.8 points/game).

• The defense is led by brothers Darius and Dante Stills as they both rank among the Big 12’s best in tackles for loss.

• Running back Leddie Brown ranks third in the Big 12 in rushing at 118.4 yards per game.

• Quarterback Jarret Doege has thrown for 1,389 yards this season with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. A LOOK AT THE SERIES

• The all-time series between K-State and West Virginia is tied, 5-5, thanks to a current four-game winning streak by the Mountaineers.

• The series is also tied in Big 12 play with each team winning four games apiece.

• The Wildcats won the first four match ups as conference foes while WVU has won the last four, the Mountaineers’ longest winning streak in the series.

• K-State will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak in Morgantown, games that took on different storylines.

• In 2016, the Wildcats jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime, but WVU outscored the Wildcats 17-3 the rest of the way – including a 14-0 margin in the fourth quarter – for a 17-16 victory.

• In 2019, the Mountaineers scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters en route to a 35-6 victory despite K-State picking off three passes in the game. INTO THE RANKINGS

• Following its 4-0 start to Big 12 play, Kansas State was ranked 22nd in both the Associated Press Top 25 and Amway Coaches’ Poll on October 11. The Wildcats remained in the polls this week by checking in at No. 16 in both polls this week.

• K-State has been ranked during the season in the first two years of the Chris Klieman era, while it is the first time the Wildcats have been ranked in consecutive seasons since 2011 and 2012.

• Kansas State is 4-0 in Big 12 action for the first time since 2014 and the fifth time in the 25-year history of the conference.

• The other four times the Wildcats began a Big 12 slate at 4-0, they went on to win the fifth conference game of the season. Those other four teams also went on to earn at least seven conference victories each time.

• K-State continues to quietly rank among the Big 12’s best teams since the league began in 1996. The Wildcats are third with 122 victories behind Oklahoma and Texas.

• The Wildcats also rank third in the conference in winning percentage since round-robin play began in 2011. They sit at 62.1% (53-32), trailing only Oklahoma (81.2%; 69-16) and Oklahoma State (65.5%; 55-29). No other team is above 60%.

• A proven winner with a championship history, Chris Klieman holds an 84-19 career record as his 81.6% winning percentage ranks seventh among all NCAA coaches – regardless of division – among those with at least seven full years of experience.

• Klieman came to Manhattan after capping his five-year stint as head coach at North Dakota State by winning his fourth national championship in 2018. A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Klieman guided the 2018 Bison to a perfect 15-0 record, making NDSU just the fifth team in FCS history to go undefeated and untied on the way to a national championship.

• One of the formulas of success for Kansas State under Chris Klieman is winning the turnover battle, which the Wildcats have done in four of five games this year.

• The Wildcats are plus-eight this season in turnover margin, which is tied for second in the nation.

• K-State turned the ball over for the first time this season in the third quarter at TCU. The Wildcats went the first 211:53 of game time before their first turnover of 2020.

• K-State has turned its 10 turnovers gained this season into 42 points (8.4 points/game), while opponents have scored 7 points (1.4 points/game) off a total of two turnovers by the Cats.

• Kansas State played 33 freshmen during the 2019 season, including 12 true freshmen, and that trend continued in the first four games of 2020.

• So far this season, 23 freshmen have played, including eight true freshmen. Of the 23 freshmen, four have tallied starts in right tackle Cooper Beebe (3), running back Deuce Vaughn (3) quarterback Will Howard (2) and defensive back Will Jones II (1).

• K-State is the nation’s best in non-offensive touchdowns over the last 21-plus seasons as it has 122 since 1999, 13 more than the next closest team.

• Kansas State had three non-offensive touchdowns in the win against Kansas as Phillip Brooks returned two punts for scores, while Justin Gardner returned an interception for a touchdown.

• It was the first time the Wildcats had three non-offensive touchdowns in one game since doing so against Montana State in 2008, while it was the first time K-State had a punt return score and a pick-six since the 2007 Texas game.

• Since 1999, K-State was averaging 5.6 non-offensive scores per year entering 2020, while the yearly average for the other 105 teams to play FBS football since 1999 is 2.7.

• K-State has had at least five non-offensive scores in seven of the last nine years, including the 2019 season.

• K-State has put together five scoring drives of 90 yards or longer this season, which ties for the most since 200 by a Wildcat team (2008).

• The five drives this year spanned 92 yards against Arkansas State, 97 yards against Texas Tech, 94 yards against KU and a pair of 91-yard drives at TCU, one of which resulted in a field goal.

• Dating back to last season, K-State has eight scoring drives that have spanned at least 90 yards, which is the most in a two-year span since 2000.

• Last season, K-State had touchdown drives of 97 yards (Nicholls), 95 yards (TCU) and 98 yards (Iowa State).

• The long drives this season have been aided by the fact that K-State has five plays from scrimmage of at least 60 yards.

• K-State finished the 2019 season with 39-straight scoring trips inside the red zone, the most by the Wildcats since at least 2003. That helped K-State finish first in the nation with a 96.2% conversion rate.

• Of K-State’s 20 red zone chances this year, 15 have resulted in touchdowns and the other five were made field goals.

• K-State’s current red zone scoring streak of 59 is the best in program history during the Big 12 era (56 between 2015 and 2016) and is the longest active streak in the Big 12.

TAKE CARE OF THE FOOTBALL • In 18 games under head coach Chris Klieman, K-State has only committed 12 offensive turnovers, including just two this season. The first turnover this year was an interception at TCU as the Wildcats went 211 minutes, 53 seconds into the season prior to their first turnover.

• Last season, K-State tied for first in the Big 12 with only 14 turnovers lost, but three were on punt returns and one was on an interception return.

• K-State was the final team in the nation last year to commit an offensive turnover when it fumbled at Oklahoma State. The Cats went the first 189 minutes, 38 seconds of the 2019 season without committing an offensive turnover. REBUILDING THE LINE • K-State has been putting the pieces together for the 2020 offensive line, one that did not return a single start from last season.

• It marked the first time since at least the 1989 season that the Wildcats did not return any starts from the previous season.

• Last year’s starting offensive line finished with a combined 208 games played and 159 career starts. This year’s initial two-deep totaled 52 games played and three starts entering the year. WILLING K-STATE TO VICTORY • A native of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, Will Howard earned his first-career start at TCU and became the first K-State true freshman quarterback to win his first-career road start.

• For his effort against the Horned Frogs, Howard was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

• He backed that up with a win in his first start in a home game against Kansas. He became the first Wildcat true freshman quarterback to win his first two career starts, while he was the first true freshman signal caller in three tries to win against K-State’s in-state rival (Duane Howard in 1976; Josh Freeman in 2006).

BIG PLAY WILL • One of the reasons Will Howard has found early success is that he has been involved in three of K-State’s five plays from scrimmage that have spanned at least 66 yards.

• Against Texas Tech, Howard threw a 70-yard, game-clinching touchdown pass to Deuce Vaughn, while he also had a 66-yarder to Briley Moore earlier in the fourth quarter to set up the go-ahead score.

• It was the first time a K-State quarterback threw two passes of at least 65 yards in the same game since Jesse Ertz in the 2017 season opener against Central Arkansas.

• Then, on the third offensive play of the game at TCU, Howard ran 80 yards to set up an early field goal. It was the seventh-longest run ever by a Wildcat and the second longest by a K-State quarterback (91 yards by Ell Roberson against Nebraska in 2002).

MAKING A SPLASH • K-State doesn’t only have a true freshman quarterback making headlines, running back Deuce Vaughn has been on fire to begin his collegiate career.

• Vaughn is the only player in the nation this season to tally at least 300 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards.

• A product of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn is also the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing yards and receiving yards.

• Vaughn has already begun to etch his name in the K-State record book. He ranks fourth in school history in rushing yards by a freshman.

• He is also fourth in school history in receiving yards among freshmen, but he is the only true freshman and running back on the list. He also ranks fourth in school history in single season receiving yards among running backs.

DEUCE ON THE LOOSE • Deuce Vaughn put together consecutive games of at least 170 yards from scrimmage against Oklahoma (194 yards) and Texas Tech (174 yards), second and fourth best scrimmage-yard efforts in the Big 12 this year, respectively.

• At No. 3 Oklahoma, he became the fifth running back in school history – and first freshman – to tally a 100-yard receiving game. It was the fifth most in a single game by a running back in Big 12 history and the most by a freshman.

• Against Texas Tech, the Round Rock, Texas, native was the first Wildcat true freshman to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2008 (Logan Dold vs. Texas A&amp;M).

• For his efforts, Vaughn was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week following both contests.

MOORE OFFENSE • One of the top tight ends from the FCS level in 2018, Briley Moore is in his second senior season and his first campaign at K-State.

• Moore, a transfer from Northern Iowa, has started his Wildcat career on the right foot by as he has a team-leading 17 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Through five games, those are already the best by a Wildcat tight end for a season since Zach Trujillo had 19 catches for 389 yards in 13 games during the 2014 season.

• His three receiving touchdowns this year are tied for fourth in school history among tight ends and two shy of tying the record (Henry Childs, 1972).

• Against Texas Tech, Moore had a 66-yard catch, a career long and the longest by a Wildcat tight end since Jeron Mastrud also had a 66-yarder at Kansas in 2006.

UNDER AVERAGE • Last season, Kansas State held 11 of its 12 opponents under their season scoring averages for the season, including double-digit differences in Big 12 play against Oklahoma State (-18.5), TCU (-20.2), Kansas (-17.8), Texas (-12.1) and Iowa State (-17.1).

• It has been more of the same for the Wildcats to start Big 12 play in 2020 under new defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman, who was on staff last season as the safeties coach. They Wildcats have held their four conference foes below their season scoring averages entering the contest.

• K-State enters this week’s game ranked fourth in the Big 12 in scoring defense by allowing 23.8 points per game. The Wildcats’ 21.0 points allowed in conference play ranks second.

EARLY INTERCEPTIONS • The Kansas State defense has started the 2020 campaign with seven interceptions, tying for 10th in the nation and leading the Big 12.

• The Wildcats’ seven interceptions in the first five games of the season are the most since they also picked off seven in the first five games of the 2011 campaign.

• The Wildcats intercepted one pass in the season opener and followed that up with three in the win at No. 3 Oklahoma. It was K-State’s first three-interception game since the 2018 contest at West Virginia.

WREAKING HAVOC • K-State blocked a kick and had an interception in each of the first four games this season.

• The 2020 Wildcats are the first FBS team since at least 2011 to have a blocked kick and tallied an interception in each of the first four games of a season.

• In the season opener against Arkansas State, Will Jones II did both himself as he became the first Wildcat with a blocked kick and an interception in the same game since Raphael Guidry against Iowa State in 2011.

WYATT’S COMING FOR YOU • One of the top young defensive ends in the Big 12 the last two seasons is looking to improve his production as a junior as Wyatt Hubert is back after earning First Team All-Big 12 honors in 2019.

• Hubert also earned votes for the league’s defensive player of the year and defensive lineman of the year awards last season.

Alice May Kelley, the daughter of Fred E. Boman and Bessie M. (Smith) Boman, was born October 2, 1932 in Belleville, Kansas and passed away on October 26, 2020 at the Presbyterian Manor, Wichita, Kansas at the age of 88 years and 24 days.

Alice grew up and attended the local public schools, graduating from Belleville High School.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On October 22, 1950, she was united in marriage to Clarence M. Kelley and to this union was born Deborah D. and Greg A.

The couple made their home in Belleville, Kansas and Alice worked for 10 years as a teller at the First National Bank.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She then was the office manager and secretary for the State Farm Insurance Agency, Belleville, KS, working with her husband, Clarence M. Kelley, agent, for 35 years until her retirement.&nbsp; They had recently moved to Wichita, Kansas to be near family.

Alice was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Bessie Boman, infant sister, Karen; &nbsp;twin sister, Alta M. (Boman) Snapp and 2 brothers, Loren E. Boman and LaVon Boman.

Alice is survived by her husband Clarence M. Kelley of Wichita, Kansas;&nbsp; &nbsp;One son, Greg (Lori) Kelley of Independence, Kansas;&nbsp;&nbsp; One daughter, Deborah D. SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a 3-hour standoff at a home in Topeka.

Just after 5p.m. Monday,&nbsp;the United States Marshals Service responded to a residence in the 500 block of SE Lamar Street in Topeka on a report of a suspect with multiple felony warrants who they had been trying to locate, according to Topeka Lt. John Trimble.

After making multiple attempts to speak with the suspect identified as Logan Bartley, 21, Topeka, the suspect barricaded himself inside a home.

At the request of the US Marshals Service, the Topeka Police Department’s Crisis Negotiators and Response Team responded to the scene and made contact with Bartley.

After over 3 hours, negotiators were able to peacefully talk him out of the home. Officers then took Bartley into custody without incident at around 8:30 p.m.

Bartley was later arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Felony Obstruction, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and 2 Felony Warrants, according to Trimble. He has a previous theft conviction from 2018, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Beuford Putman, 82 of Abilene passed away Friday, October 23, 2020 at his home. He was born May 24, 1938 in Johnson City, Tennessee, the son of James “Webb” and Sylvia (McInturff) Putman. 

On June 12, 1988 he was united in marriage to Barbara Baker in Abilene. She survives of the home. 

Beuford served 8 years in the Air Force and 22 years in the Army Reserve 425th Transportation Company. He worked at Ft. Riley as a heavy equipment mechanic.
