SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman shot by police in Wichita was released from the hospital and is <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=123228">now in jail.</a>

Deputies booked <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=123228">35-year-old Jennifer Miller</a> into the Sedgwick County Jail just after 7p.m. Friday, according to <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=123228">online jail records.</a>

On March 31, two police officers were proactively checking the Red Roof Inn, 7335 East Kellogg and Sky Palace, 7321 East Kellogg after numerous calls and complaints over several months involving assaults, burglaries, drugs, stolen cars, underage parties and other things that would constitute a nuisance to the neighborhood and the businesses.

While checking the businesses, the officers saw a stolen Subaru Legacy behind the Red Roof Inn. The car had been reported stolen on March 30. As officers approached the car, they saw Miller enter the car's trunk, grab items and walk toward her room at the Sky Palace.

One officer approached Miller. A second officer arrived to assist and asked Miller for identification. Miller reached into her purse, pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at both officers, according to Wichita Police Captain Stephens.

One officer pulled his handgun and fired one shot striking Miller in the neck. The officers began life saving measures and called EMS.&nbsp; She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp;

Miller is being held on requested charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen property, auto theft and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Stephens.

Just before 9a.m. Wednesday, two police officers were proactively checking the Red Roof Inn, 7335 East Kellogg and Sky Palace, 7321 East Kellogg after numerous calls and complaints over several months involving assaults, burglaries, drugs, stolen cars, underage parties and other things that would constitute a nuisance to the neighborhood and the businesses.

While checking the businesses, the officers saw a stolen Subaru Legacy behind the Red Roof Inn. The car had been reported stolen on Tuesday. As they approached the car, they saw Miller enter the car's trunk, grab items and walk toward her room at the Sky Palace.

One officer approached Miller. A second officer arrived to assist and asked Miller for identification. Miller reached into her purse, pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at both officers, according to Stephens.

When she is released from the hospital in a couple of days she will be booked on requested charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of stolen property, auto theft and felon in possession of a firearm, according to Stephens.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, friend, baseball fan, and public servant, Robert D. (Bob) Linder was at home in Manhattan, Kansas when he left this earth to be with his Lord early Easter Sunday morning 4 April 2021 at the age of 87. Born in Salina, Kansas, on 6 October 1933, he was the first of Orel Andrew Linder and Minnie Izetta Bickel Linder’s four boys. The Great Depression, which presented his working-class family with many hardships, was no indication of what future his talents, intellect, and hard work would produce, but the circumstances of his humble beginnings were a powerful force that would inform his perspective; the expansive, creative spirit of the Great Plains would never leave him. With faith in God, a good sense of humor, and a keen, curious mind, Linder was blessed with a rich life filled with family, friends, baseball, and scholarly adventure. From a young age, Linder developed a love for baseball, an interest he shared with his father who once, at great cost, took young Bobby on an overnight bus ride to see the St. Louis Cardinals play, then the closest professional team, where he cheered on Stan the Man Musial and other heroes of the day. He returned to organize his local neighborhood team into serious ball players by having them each sign a contract committing to a fee of 1 cent if they missed a practice. Linder excelled at sports during his high school days, setting track records and wrestling for Salina High School, from which he graduated in 1951. He also continued perfecting his game of baseball, playing with zeal and at a standard that put him on the path of playing professionally, but eventually turning down a Triple A contract with the White Sox to attend college. He would never fully leave his love of baseball behind and even taught a hugely popular course on the History of Baseball in American Culture, gave talks at Society for American Baseball Research conferences, and always enjoyed attending Kansas City Royals games, and spring training camps, especially in his latter years. After high school, Linder moved to Chicago to receive Biblical training at Moody Bible Institute, the institution he credited for developing his ability to write well; on the side, he washed windows part-time in downtown Chicago, amongst other jobs, to make ends meet. After his stint in Chicago, he returned to Kansas where he was awarded scholarships to study for his BS in Education with an emphasis in History from Kansas State Teachers College, now Emporia State University, earning his degree in 1956. While at college in Emporia, he discovered his passion for history and met and married his wife of 63 years, Jean Ann Burch. Around this time, while exploring different career paths, he also earned a couple of seminary degrees. From Emporia, he went on to the University of Iowa from where he obtained an MA and PhD in History in l960 and l963, respectively. In this period of his life, he also served in the US Army Reserves for eight years, retiring with the rank of Captain. Linder began his teaching career at William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri, in l963. In l965, he joined the History Department at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, where he went on to teach for more than 50 years. In 2003, he was named University Distinguished Professor of History and retired, Emeritus, in 2018. His years of post-doctoral study while on sabbatical, first at Oxford University, England in 1974 and again at Cambridge University, England in 1986, were among some of the happiest times of his life, particularly his days in Oxford when his family was alongside him and where on weekends they explored the nooks and crannies of the country’s storied castles, haunted places, and battlefields, and he enjoyed multiple trips to the European continent driving as far as from Oxford to Moscow by car. During his lifetime he wrote and published extensively in the fields of religion and politics, writing or editing 17 books and publishing more than one hundred scholarly papers and articles. His latest major project, a seminal work on the history of Evangelicals in Australia which he co-authored with Australian scholar, Stuart Piggin, was the culmination of 30 years of research and parts of multiple decades spent on the continent Down Under. Published in two volumes (2018 and 2020) the book has received critical acclaim. During his time there, Linder developed many close and enduring relationships with his Australian counterparts. He loved the Out Back as he did the Great Plains and acquired the nickname “Crocodile Bob.” A lifelong educator, Linder was also a public servant. Elected to the Manhattan City Commission in 1969 and again in 1975, he served two four-years terms that included two stints as mayor of the city. Among his proudest accomplishments on the city commission were his successful negotiations with Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska to secure the railroad right of way for the city to build what is now Ft. Riley Blvd., his advocacy for the location of Manhattan Town Center in its current location to re-anchor the downtown as the city began to expand westward, and his work to desegregate the city cemetery in the 1970s. Issues of community and working for social justice were always high on his agenda. Linder may be best known for his passion for teaching, drive for excellence, and unquenchable thirst for knowledge which he felt compelled to share with the tens of thousands of students who passed through his many classes, a great number of whom he regarded as true friends. He also was known for and fond of saying, “the more you know, the more you know!!” His most precious treasure, however, was his family to whom he was dedicated, and his grace-filled wife who was his source of strength and north star. JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

On April 6, sheriff's deputies stopped a vehicle for an alleged registration violation east of U.S. Highway 75 on 126th Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 Further investigation in the traffic stop led to the discovery of suspected illicit items in the vehicle. 

Deputies arrested the driver, Kevin Lamont Hayes, 33, of Topeka and booked him into the Jackson County Jail on on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal carrying of weapons, driving with no license and no insurance.

Today in History -- April 10

MCPHERSON -- The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is being brought in to investigate the death of an inmate in the McPherson County Jail.

According to information from Sheriff Jerry P. Montagne, Kevin Brittingham, 55, of Newton, was arrested on a requested charge of domestic battery and booked into the McPherson County Jail at approximately 2:15 p.m. Thursday. He was placed in a booking holding cell.

At approximately 3:35 p.m., a McPherson County correctional officer discovered Brittingham unresponsive in the booking cell. 

According to Montagne, life-saving measures were attempted, including administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation and using an automated external defibrillator. Additionally, McPherson Fire Department and EMS personnel responded to the jail and continued attempting to resuscitate Brittingham. Despite those efforts, Brittingham was pronounced dead at approximately 4:05 p.m., Montagne reported.

Per state statute, the McPherson County Sheriff's Office has requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) look into the matter. The KBI investigates all deaths of individuals in the custody of a Kansas jail or prison, unless the inmate is being regularly attended by a physician.

Montagne noted that Brittingham's injuries appear to have been self-inflicted. An autopsy will be conducted and the investigation is ongoing.

Montagne, Kevin Brittingham, 55, of Newton, was arrested on a requested charge of domestic battery and booked into the McPherson County Jail at approximately 2:15 p.m. Thursday. He was placed in a booking holding cell.At approximately 3:35 p.m., a McPherson County correctional officer discovered Brittingham unresponsive in the booking cell. According to Montagne, life-saving measures were attempted, including administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation and using an automated external defibrillator. Additionally, McPherson Fire Department and EMS personnel responded to the jail and continued attempting to resuscitate Brittingham. Despite those efforts, Brittingham was pronounced dead at approximately 4:05 p.m., Montagne reported.Per state statute, the McPherson County Sheriff's Office has requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) look into the matter. The KBI investigates all deaths of individuals in the custody of a Kansas jail or prison, unless the inmate is being regularly attended by a physician.Montagne noted that Brittingham's injuries appear to have been self-inflicted. An autopsy will be conducted and the investigation is ongoing.

Ann earned her master’s degree from Michigan State University, was a fan of Spartan football and left her collection of American needlework (one of her areas of specific study) to MSU.&nbsp; Ann received her doctorate from Ohio State University.

She joined the faculty at Fort Hays State University in 1968 where she spent her entire career. She was a professor of history, an advisor, and retired as chair of her department.&nbsp; While at FHSU, Ann served on many committees, including the department scholarship committee, and she sponsored Phi Alpha Theta, a history honor society. &nbsp;She supported student involvement in the Ellis County Historical Society and served as curator of history at FHSU’s Sternberg Museum of Natural History.&nbsp;Ann also was a member of the Kansas Humanities Council Speakers Bureau.&nbsp;In the community, she was a Hays Public Library board member, an active participant in Friends of the Library, and encouraged library music programs. &nbsp; Ann was a member of the Hays Medical Center Auxiliary.&nbsp;She also led book discussions, part of the Talk About Literature in Kansas program of the humanities council.

Ann was an avid fan of jazz and other forms of music and, according to the musicians she knew, a great listener.&nbsp; Musicians and teachers&nbsp;Brad Dawson and Luke Johnson from the Hays area showed their appreciation by playing at Ann's birthday celebrations at Wilson Care and Rehab.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ann’s father, Glen Liston, was a journalist, photographer and newspaper editor.&nbsp; Her mother, Mildred, was highly educated at a time when it was unusual for women.&nbsp; She taught home economics, currently Family and Consumer Science.

Survivors include friends Kate Dutton Coddington&nbsp;of Wamego, Kansas; Elaine Garrison&nbsp;of Kansas City, Missouri; and former students and colleagues at FHSU.

Honorary pallbearers are Richard "Junior" Brown; Dr. David Goodlett;&nbsp;Andrew Warren; Gerald Spaits; Ben Markley; and Clint Ashlock.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

SHAWNEE COUNTY –Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for multiple charges following a traffic stop.

Just before 4p.m. April 6, a K9 unit conducted a traffic stop on a white 2003 Hyundai Tiburon near mile post 370 on NE U.S. 24 Highway for failure to wear seat belts, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The passenger, Christopher L. Allen, 38, of Topeka, had a civil warrant for his arrest. During the investigation, the K9 was deployed and illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia were located.

Allen was arrested for his warrant and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to wear a seat belt.

Wanted Kan. man jailed after stop for seat belt violation

LIBERTY, Mo. (AP) — A powerful Kansas lawmaker accused of drunken driving had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit and taunted the Highway Patrol officer who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-wichita-arrests-topeka-driving-under-the-influence-7380a7e3e4fbe335536f78e0a5bf719d">arrested</a>&nbsp;him last month for allegedly speeding the wrong way on an interstate, according to documents released Thursday.

Kansas GOP Senate Majority Leader Gene Suellentrop&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-wichita-arrests-topeka-driving-under-the-influence-53d21c4172c5cd87cbeaec02c0dcb882">faces five counts</a>, including a felony fleeing to avoid arrest and a misdemeanor driving under the influence charge stemming from his March 16 arrest on Interstate 70 in Topeka.

An affidavit submitted by Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Austin Shepley said tests indicated Suellentrop’s blood alcohol level was .17. The legal limit is .08.

After Suellentrop, 69, refused to take a breathalyzer test, he was taken to a Topeka hospital. At one point, he called Shepley “donut boy,” according to the affidavit, and said the events were “all for going the wrong way.”

“While the phlebotomist was administering the blood kit, Gene Suellentop’s demeanor becoming slightly aggressive in his tone, he made reference to physically going up against me,” Shepley said. “He looked me up and down, stating he played state sports competitively in high school. He stated he could ‘take me.’ ”

Suellentrop’s office said he would issue a statement later Thursday. His attorney, Tom Lemon, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.

Suellentrop holds the state Senate’s second-highest leadership job, and the majority leader decides which proposals are debated each day. He has stepped away from most of his legislative duties until the criminal case is resolved.

Suellentrop was not at the Statehouse on Thursday afternoon and will be absent Friday, according to GOP staffers.

In the affidavit, Shepley said he initially saw Suellentrop driving west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 470 and witnessed him narrowly miss another car. The trooper said he, too, had to swerve to avoid Suellentrop’s car. The ensuing chase reached speeds up to 90 mph in the 65 mph zone.

Shepley, with help from Topeka police officers, eventually used a tactical maneuver to force Suellentrop to stop on Interstate 70.

Shepley said when he approached the car, Suellentrop looked at him with a “confused, frightened, blank” stare and did not respond to commands to get out of the car. The patrolman said he smelled alcohol inside Suellentrop’s vehicle.

A Topeka police officer and Shepley removed Suellentrop from the car and placed him in handcuffs. The trooper could not understand what Suellentrop was saying because he was mumbling with slurred speech, according to the affidavit.

Because the car was stopped in a dangerous location, Suellentrop was taken to a state building for further testing, and the senator had trouble walking while he was there, according to the affidavit. Suellentrop refused to take a breathalyzer test, so Shepley obtained a search warrant and took him to the hospital for the blood test.

The Wichita Republican was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-wichita-arrests-topeka-driving-under-the-influence-7380a7e3e4fbe335536f78e0a5bf719d">released</a>&nbsp;later that day after a Shawnee County District Court judge found during a first hearing that “pertinent information” wasn’t included in the arrest report, meaning there was no probable cause to support his arrest.

Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay refiled the charges against him last week.

"Just the other day, I read an article about the discovery of the 9,000-year-old remains of a woman found with hunting gear, which pointed to the fact that ancient women were hunters, not just gatherers. It immediately prompted me to begin a poem titled 'Field Report.'"

Two other local poets – Harley Elliott and Poetry Series founder Patricia Traxler - will read from their work via Zoom and YouTube on the remaining Tuesdays in April. 

Moritz is a writer, an installation and graphic artist, and retired educator. She received an MFA in Creative Writing from Wichita State University, where she was the 2009-2010 MFA Fellow in Poetry. Her poetry has received an AWP Intro Journals Award, A Ploughshares New Voice Award, an Academy of American Poets Prize, and a Holt&nbsp;Prize in Literature. Her essays have received the Isotope Prize for Creative Non-Fiction and a Hunger Mountain Creative Nonfiction Prize.

Moritz’s poetry has appeared in Ploughshares, Puerto del Sol, and Mason’s Road, among other publications, and her poetic texts have become part of public visual art installations. She was director of the Spring Poetry Series for 17 years and has taught at The Ellsworth Correctional Facility, Kansas State University, and Kansas Wesleyan University.

WAKEENEY, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has made an arrest in a child pornography case.

Just after 8pm. Wednesday, April 7, KBI agents served an arrest warrant at 209 N. 4th&nbsp;St. in Wakeeney and arrested Blaine D. Dryden, 62, of Wakeeney, on requested charges of aggravated internet trading of child pornography, and multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to a media release from the agency. The arrest occurred without incident.

The alleged crimes are suspected to have occurred between November 2019 and June 2020. Dryden was employed as a lieutenant with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office until July 2020. When made aware of the allegations, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office cooperated fully in the investigation, and immediately placed Dryden on administrative leave.

After his arrest, Dryden was booked into to the Graham County Jail. Bond was set at $750,000.

Former Kan. sheriff's Lt. accused of trading child porn

The Southeast of Saline Trojan baseball team continued their hot start to the season with a pair of run-rule victories over the Republic County Buffaloes earlier this week.

SES won their first two games against Lincoln 15-0 and 17-2 before defeating Republic County 18-3 and 13-3 on Tuesday.

With the first four games in the books, the 4-0 Trojans have outscored their opponents by 55 runs, and have won every game by mercy rule.

In the first game against the Buffs, SES picked up 18 runs on 14 hits, including an offensive explosion for nine runs in the third inning en route to an 18-3 win.

Bryant Banks pitched well, collecting the win in a game where the Trojans allowed just three runs on four hits.

Game two saw more of the same, as Southeast tallied seven extra base hits, including a home run by Jaxson Gebhardt, as part of a 12 hit effort.

This time it was Evan Nickelson on the bump, who shined once more, picking up his second win of the season in a game where SES allowed just three runs on six hits.

After steamrolling Lincoln and Republic County, the Trojans will host Abilene for a double header before a brutal stretch of five double headers away from home.

Trojans ravage Republic County 18-3, 13-3 to remain a perfect 4-0

Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Sankey of Belleville, KS, age 82, died September 30, 2020 at the Belleville Health Care Center, Belleville, KS. She was born on September 10, 1938 to Norbert and Margaret Habiger in Concordia, KS. She was raised in Republic, Kansas and graduated from Republic High School in 1956. Beth continued her education at Fort Hays State University and completed her Bachelor of Science in education from Kansas University in 1960.

She married Don LeRoy Sankey on August 20, 1960 and taught in the Munden School District for one year. Soon after, the couple moved to Republic where Don opened his own repair shop, and welcomed the arrival of Ronald, born on June 18, 1961. When Ron was in first grade, Beth went back to work teaching in the Republic schools and taught kindergarten for one year and then transferred to high school English. She directed many plays during her teaching career in Republic and enjoyed her students greatly.

Republic was home for the Sankeys for many years. Both Beth's parents, Norb and Margaret, Don's parents, John and Edna Sankey, and brother and sister-in-law Norman and Helen Sankey were within shouting distance, not to mention, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless dear friends. The couple loved to entertain.&nbsp;

In 1970 the couple purchased the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership in Belleville, called Sankey Motors. She continued teaching and also kept books for the dealership for several years and they moved to Belleville in 1993. Her favorite pastime was reading, but coming close were knitting, cross-stitching, sewing and crafting.&nbsp; Her bridge club, known as the "Mothers' Night Out" group, enjoyed years of entertainment at their husbands' expense.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother, Jim Habiger.

Survivors include son Ron and wife Lori of Garden City, granddaughter Jade Sankey of Jacksonville, FL, and grandson and wife Jon and Nikki Sankey and great-granddaughter Millie Sankey of Panama City Beach, FL, two sisters-in-law Joan Sankey Free of Cleveland, OK, and Jeanette Habiger of Shell Knob, MO, in addition to four nieces and one nephew.
