The Southeast of Saline Trojan track and field team made the trip to Ellinwood on Friday and posted one final record setting day ahead of next week's league meet.

The boys team kept their perfect season alive, winning the meet by a comfortable 68 points over Sterling while the girls finished in third just 17 points off the pace of the winners in Kiowa County.

On the girls side, several athletes made a return to the podium as Jentrie Alderson brought home the gold in the 800 and 1600, Ivie Douglas took silver in the discus throw, and Ashley Prochazka took second in the 3200.

Alsersons time of 5:13.7 in the 1600 was fast enough to set a new meet record, breaking Jeanene Rugans time set in 1991.

Rounding out podium places SES got third place finishes from Prochazka in the 1600, Joni Schroeder in the 3200 and Brynn Hawbaker in the long jump.

The girls team also posted a second place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.

On the boys side nine different athletes found a step of the podium, and the relay teams swept the meet, winning the 4x1, 4x2 and 4x800 meter races.

The 4x800-meter relay team of Luke Gleason, Dominic Jackson, Drake Augustine and Dylan Sprecker set a time of 8:06.30, which shattered the previous school record that had stood since 1993.

In individual events, first place finishes were earned by Eddie McVay in the 100-meter dash, Dominic Jackson in the 800, Damion Jackson in the 1600, Dylan Sprecker in the 3200, Chase Poague in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles and Jude Golden in the javelin throw.

Poague’s time of 13.96 in the 110m hurdles broke the previous record of 14.5 set by Steve Fritz in 1986.

Dylan Sprecker also broke his own school record in the 3200 with a new top time of 9:30.68

Second place finishers included Nakari Morrical-Palmer in both the 100 and 200-meter dash, Luke Gleason in the 800, Dominic Jackson in the 3200, Damion Jackson in the 3200 and Grant Stumpf in the 300m hurdles and high jump.

Rounding out the podium finishers on the boys side were third place finishes from Drake Augustine in the 800 and Stumpf in the 110m hurdles.

With the Ellinwood Invitational in the books, both SES track teams will focus on the league meet next Friday, which will be the final meet of the season before regionals.

Trojan track takes first and third at Ellinwood Invitational

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an investigation.

On May 6, numerous police agencies conducted a search warrant in a home in the 900 block of NE Michigan Avenue in Topeka, according to Topeka Police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Investigators recovered dozens of stolen items, guns and drugs inside the home. The recovered items had previously been reported stolen from Atchison and Jackson counties.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Lindsey L. Wabaunsee, 34 of Topeka, and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include Possession of stimulant, Possession of marijuana, Criminal use of weapons, Defacing identification marks on a firearm, Use/Possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body and Theft.

The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation, according to Spiker.

Weather History for Friday, May 7, 2021, from the National Weather Service in Wichita: In 1927, a huge F5 tornado nearly two miles wide raced 95 miles from extreme south-central Kansas to central Kansas. The tornado killed 10, injured 300, and caused around $1.3 million damage. Most of the approximately 100 farmsteads that were hit vanished. The twister began in extreme southeast Comanche County. The vortex quickly intensified, reaching nearly one mile wide. The tornado tore through Barber, Kingman, eastern Reno and southwest McPherson counties before lifting seven miles south-southwest of McPherson. Four fatalities occurred one mile southeast of Medicine Lodge, one was two miles west of Kingman, three were in east Hutchinson, and two were in McPherson County. Damage in east Hutchinson totaled $750,000.

In 1840, the Great Natchez, Miss., Tornado roared into the record books. The huge vortex formed just southwest of Natchez just before 1 p.m. and moved northeast along the Mississippi River. The tornado killed 317 and injured 109. It was the deadliest tornado in United States history until the Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, that killed 695 and injured 2,027. It is still the second deadliest United States tornado on record. It is also the only massive tornado in United States history to have killed more people than it injured, at almost a 3 to 1 margin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Robert E. “Bob” Watson, the son of Harlow Woodrow Watson and Merle Marie (Finch) Watson, was born January 21, 1947 in Santa Maria, CA and passed away on May 3, 2021 at Stormont-Vail Health, Topeka, KS from complications due to pneumonia at the age of 74 years, 3 months, 11 days.

Bob attended grade school in Lovewell, KS and later graduated from Mankato High School in 1965. He then attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS until he entered the U.S. Army.&nbsp; Bob served during the Vietnam War in Artillery until his honorable discharge. H e was a designated disabled veteran. He returned to K-State and completed his Bachelor of Science, graduating in December of 1972.

Bob then returned to Jewell County where he began farming. He was a farmer and stockman all of his life and also worked for Reinke Mfg. in Deshler, NE&nbsp;for eight and a half years.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On February 17, 1973, he was united in marriage to Elaine K. Searcy and to this union three children were born, Curtis, Travis, and Hilary. The couple made their home in rural Formoso, KS.

Bob was a member of the Mankato VFW and the Scandia American Legion.&nbsp; He served in the honor detail for funerals for many years.&nbsp; Bob was always willing to help his neighbors and friends and took great joy in providing home-raised pork and garden produce to his friends and family.

Bob is survived by his wife, Elaine K. Watson of rural Formoso, KS; two sons, Curtis (Glena) Watson of Spokane, WA and Travis (Jennifer) Watson of Aurora, CO; one daughter, Hilary (Kerry) Campbell of St. Charles, Illinois;&nbsp; five grandchildren: Lesley, Henry, and Oscar Watson and Morgan and Anna Campbell;&nbsp; one sister, Harleen (Don) Pino of Walsenberg, CO; other relatives and friends.

Cremation was selected and graveside memorial services and inurnment will be held at 4:30 p.m., Monday, May 10, 2021 at the Balch Cemetery, rural Formoso, Kansas.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Ft. Riley Honor Detail, Ft.&nbsp;Riley, KS.

No visitation is planned at the funeral home. Friends may gather prior to the graveside services to sign the register book or leave memorials.

Memorials are suggested to the Robert E. Watson Memorial (to be determined later).

He was a farmer and stockman all of his life and also worked for Reinke Mfg. in Deshler, NE&nbsp;for eight and a half years.&nbsp;&nbsp;On February 17, 1973, he was united in marriage to Elaine K. Searcy and to this union three children were born, Curtis, Travis, and Hilary. The couple made their home in rural Formoso, KS.Bob was a member of the Mankato VFW and the Scandia American Legion.&nbsp; He served in the honor detail for funerals for many years.&nbsp; Bob was always willing to help his neighbors and friends and took great joy in providing home-raised pork and garden produce to his friends and family.He was preceded in death by his parents.Bob is survived by his wife, Elaine K. Hollistah announced this morning that Noah Peck, Abilene, is the fifth "Hollistah Scholah."

A senior at Chapman High School, Peck has a 3.8 GPA. In addition to his studies, Peck participates in various community activities in his town, primarily volunteering at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Abilene. Peck has also traveled to Oklahoma and Kentucky, doing clean-up labor and working for the International Disaster Emergency Service. 

A musician, Peck plays banjo, and performs with his worship team at Abilene First Christian Church. 

Peck plans to attend Kansas State Polytechnic in the fall to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

Chapman High senior selected for Cash Hollistah Scholarship

WICHITA —The Kansas Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Richard Muma as the 15th president of Wichita State University, effective immediately, according to a media release from the university.&nbsp;

Muma has been serving as interim president of Wichita State since September 2020.

Community leaders and members of the Shocker Nation joined virtually and in person on Thursday, May 6, for the announcement by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Muma has been a cornerstone of the campus community for over 25 years as a professor, department chair, executive vice president and provost, acting president and — most recently — interim president.&nbsp;

During his interim presidency, Muma has worked with campus constituency groups to align Wichita State’s priorities with KBOR’s Building a Future plan. Earlier this year, he introduced the university’s priorities as the following:&nbsp;

Muma lives in Wichita with his spouse, Rick Case. Case is the district director for the Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. They have two adult sons Drew and Collin and a daughter-in-law, Abi. &nbsp;

Muma and Case are members of the WSU Foundation’s Society of 1895. In 2011, they established Richard D. Muma and Rick A. Case Equality Scholarship in 2011 for students members of Spectrum: LGBTQ &amp; Allies, a WSU student organization.&nbsp;

Muma, who goes by Rick, was born in Wichita but raised in Houston. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston, a Master of Public Health in Community Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

He has more than 30 years of experience as a professor, administrator and physician assistant in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Before assuming the executive vice president and provost position in 2018, Muma served as the senior associate vice president for Academic Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management.

While at Wichita State, he has also served as chair and professor in the departments of Public Health Sciences and Physician Assistant. Muma has also served as chair for Saint Louis University's Department of Physician Assistant Education and an assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston’s Department of PA Studies.

As the executive vice president and provost, Muma served as the university's chief academic officer and provided academic leadership for the university's priorities — including enrollment, applied learning, funded research, and regional economic development.

Prior to assuming administrative roles at Wichita State, Muma was active in reshaping health profession education at Wichita State. Most notably, he was responsible for developing undergraduate degrees for paramedics and health science majors, a master’s degree in physician assistant studies, and reorganizing the Department of Public Health Sciences to include undergraduate degrees in health management and health science and a graduate degree in aging studies.

Muma has published his research in notable journals and has edited four books, two on HIV infection and two others on patient education.&nbsp;

MONTGOMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect in connection with a bank robbery.

On Wednesday, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Independence Police Department along with Montgomery County authorities investigated a bank robbery that occurred at Equity Bank&nbsp;112 E Myrtle Street in Independence, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

At 4 p.m. Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office were assisting South Coffeyville Police Department with an injury accident that occurred on U.S. 169 at the Oklahoma State line. While deputies were directing traffic,&nbsp; one deputy observed the suspect and suspect vehicle drive slowly by him north bound on U.S. 169 toward Coffeyville. The deputy&nbsp; then gave chase in his patrol unit.

The case went through residential streets in Coffeyville, then back onto North U.S. 169. The suspect lost control of his vehicle at County Road 3200 and U.S. 169. At that time the suspect later identified a Paul Duane Gordon, 35, Marshfield, Missouri, exited his vehicle and ran on foot across a field, where he was taken into custody by Montgomery County Deputies.

Deputies took Gordon into custody and transported him to the Montgomery Department of Corrections where he was booked on requested charges of Aggravated Bank Robbery, Flee and eluding and reckless driving, according to Wade.

COWLEY COUNTY—A Kansas man is facing more jail time for a fifth DUI arrest since 2009.

Just before 6p.m. April 28, police were dispatched to west-central Arkansas City, Kansas for a report of a vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the roadway that almost had struck another oncoming vehicle, according to a media release.

Police located the vehicle in the 300 block of North A Street and conducted a traffic stop. The driver identified as 40-year-old Jason Dale Patton&nbsp; was transported to the Arkansas City Police Department for further testing.

Following testing, Patton allegedly became irate and combative, slamming his own head multiple times into the holding room wall. After he later complained of head pain, he was evaluated by the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department.

As Patton was being escorted outside the building for transport to the county jail, he then allegedly kicked and kneed holes into the wall of the police department.

Patton also began resisting the officers and had to be physically restrained prior to his transport.

Officers booked Patton on requested charges of one felony count each of driving under the influence (fifth offense) and interference with a law enforcement officer.

He also was arrested on one misdemeanor count each of criminal damage to property, driving with a suspended driver’s license and transporting an open container of alcohol, according to police.

Patton was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $9,300 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. He since has posted bond and been released.

 </figure>COWLEY COUNTY—A Kansas man is facing more jail time for a fifth DUI arrest since 2009.Just before 6p.m. April 28, police were dispatched to west-central Arkansas City, Kansas for a report of a vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the roadway that almost had struck another oncoming vehicle, according to a media release.Police located the vehicle in the 300 block of North A Street and conducted a traffic stop. The driver identified as 40-year-old Jason Dale Patton&nbsp; was transported to the Arkansas City Police Department for further testing.Following testing, Patton allegedly became irate and combative, slamming his own head multiple times into the holding room wall.
