&nbsp;The Salina Police Department this morning released additional information concerning the arrest of Nelson Hull III.

Hull was identified on Feb. 27 as a suspect in the murder of Courtney Ann Hoffman. Hoffman was found dead in a car at her residence in the 700 block of N. Fourth Street on Feb. 23. She had been shot.

On Wednesday, while following up on investigative leads, Salina Police detectives and agents from the U.S. Marshals Service developed information that Hull III was in a residence at 511 E. Stimmel Road, according to information release by police this morning. Law enforcement surrounded the residence and began using a public address system to order Hull to exit the residence.

SWAT teams from the Salina Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol spent approximately two and a half hours trying to encourage Hull to leave the residence without violence, the Salina Police Department noted. When those efforts were unsuccessful, chemical agents were introduced into the residence. 

Hull surrendered a short time later and was taken into custody at approximately 5:15 p.m., according to a Facebook post Wednesday evening by Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson.

Hull, 36, was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges.

Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon

Additionally, based on information uncovered during the investigation, Julie Ecton, 41, who resides at 511 E. Stimmel Road, was arrested on the requested charge of obstructing apprehension or prosecution, according to information from the Salina Police Department.

"The Salina Police Department would like to thank the public for information provided during this investigation. In addition, the Salina Police Department would also like to thank the Kansas Highway Patrol, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Saline County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the apprehension of Nelson Hull III," the Salina Police Department noted.

A Salina man wanted in connection to a February murder in north Salina was arrested late this afternoon after an approximate 2.5 hour standoff.

Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson posted the following update on the Salina Police Department Facebook page this evening.

At approximately 5:10 PM, the suspect, Nelson Hull, was arrested after an approximate 2 1/2 hour standoff with Salina SWAT.

Hull was arrested at a residence in the 500 block of E. Stimmel.

This incident did involve chemical agents being introduced into the home.

We appreciated KHP’s assistance during this standoff.

SHAWNEE COUNTy —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects for burglary thanks to an alert citizen.

Just after 4:00 a.m. Monday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a call about a man and woman that were seen breaking into a vehicle at an apartment complex at 3720 SW 29th Street in Topeka, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Officers responded a short time later and located two people matching the description of the suspects. They were taken into custody at the scene.

Numerous stolen items were recovered and as a result of the investigation, police booked Michael D. Delaney, 31 of Silver Lake and Shelby L. Whitaker, 23 of Topeka into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Burglary; Vehicle Theft &lt; $1,500, From Motor Vehicle.

Alert citizen helps police catch Kansas burglary suspects

CHEROKEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are searching for two suspects who escaped from the Cherokee County Jail and are now offering a $5000 reward for information leading to their capture, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff.

Just after 11p.m. Monday 30-year-old double murder suspect Mark Gerald Hopkins II and 34-year-old drug suspect Michael Wayne Martsolf escaped from the Cherokee County Jail in Columbus, Kansas, according to Sheriff David Grove.

The suspects may be driving a 2008 White Honda Accord with a Missouri tag LG2XOF.&nbsp; Both suspects have extensive tattoos throughout their bodies.&nbsp; Both should be considered armed and dangerous. If you see them, call 911.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A high school student told a sheriff’s deputy that a Kansas House member kicked him in the testicles while the lawmaker was working as a substitute teacher in his hometown last month, according to the deputy’s written statement.

The deputy’s affidavit, released to reporters Tuesday, said Republican state Rep. Mark Samsel, of Wellsville, acknowledged during an interview the day after the April 28 incident that he had “demonstrated a kick” after the boy’s behavior had disrupted class. He told the deputy he did not kick the student and that the boy “embellished the heck out of it.”

Samsel has been charged&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ks-state-wire-kansas-government-and-politics-4f7abc1a3efe44669614bc9c0361c748">with three misdemeanor counts of battery</a>. He is accused of having contact with two Wellsville High School students “in a rude, insulting or angry manner” and of doing bodily harm to one of them.

Samsel did not answer a telephone message and a message could not be left for him. His attorney, Christopher Scott, did not immediately return a cellphone message seeking comment. Scott had asked a Franklin County Magistrate Kevin Kimball on Monday not to release the affidavit, but Kimball released a redacted copy.

Samsel last week&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-government-and-politics-7191c4a10e182aa9a6a030d5fd8fb5fb">pleaded not guilty</a>&nbsp;to the charges and was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation. His next court hearing is scheduled for July 12.

Deputy: Student says Kansas lawmaker kicked him in testicles

NORTON – A Kansas man has been sentenced to more than 43 years in prison for convictions of second-degree murder and kidnapping of his wife, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Damien Shields, 44,&nbsp; Norton was sentenced Tuesday in Norton County District Court by District Judge Preston Pratt to 460 months for second-degree murder and 60 months for kidnapping to be served consecutively in the Kansas Department of Corrections. Shields had pleaded guilty to the charges in February.

The crimes took place in April 2019 at a residence in Norton County. The case was investigated by the Norton Police Department, Norton County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Police Department, Cape Girardeau, Mo., Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

NORTON COUNTY —A 42-year-old Norton man was arrested for first-degree murder Monday (April 8, 2019) in connection with the death of his wife over the weekend, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The agency says Damien Shields was taken into custody after he was released from the Cape Girardeau hospital where he was taken after officers found him in a hotel room, suffering from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He has been booked into the Cape Girardeau jail.

Roberta Josephine (Bobby Jo)(Milner) Mog , formerly of rural Wilson, KS, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 in Thornton, Colorado at the age of 93.

Bobby Jo was born to Gus C. and Bernece Lancaster Milner on November 25, 1927, in the small southeastern Kansas town of Virgil.&nbsp; Bobby Jo hit the ground running - literally speaking - with her dog and best friend Mary Lou, and she roamed the country side as an extremely curious young girl.&nbsp; Bobby Jo enjoyed her many adventures with brothers William (Bill), Kenneth Lee, and little sister Karen Louise Kerby, all surviving.&nbsp; The siblings have many a story to tell of Bobby Jo’s antics and adventures.

Having been diagnosed as deaf at a very young age, Bobby Jo was off to Kansas School for the Deaf (KSD) in Olathe, Kansas, where she studied and excelled until her graduation in 1947.&nbsp; During her tenure she served as editor in chief for the Jackrabbit, the school paper, and year book. She was senior class v.p. and salutatorian. Her little sister Karen claims Bobby Jo took great care with her as they traveled by train the 200-plus miles to KSD.&nbsp; She tells the story of Bobby Jo going to the dormitories for the younger children every morning to braid Karen’s long hair.&nbsp; It was at KSD that she met the love of her life, John Clement Mog (who preceded her in death in 2007.) &nbsp;Growing up near one another in rural central Kansas they spent a good amount of time together, including the commute to and from the deaf school. It took five years after her graduation before they married, however, as Bobby Jo had many adventures she needed to undertake. Her senior yearbook quote was “The whole wide World seems Small to Me”.&nbsp;

On May 19, 1952 John and Roberta married and moved into their home on the Mog family farm in Noble Township near Wilson, Kansas, where she lived for most of her life. Life on the farm was hard, but she loved it. She bore five children in the old stone house, all of whom survive her: Bryce Robin in 1953, John Robert (Walber) in 1955, Terrance Lynn (Suzette) in 1956, Mary Ann (Marty Sweat) in 1958 and James Gregory (Betsy) in 1960. Roberta loved to garden and preserve all kinds of fruits vegetables.&nbsp; She would scour the countryside looking for wild plums, chokecherries and elderberries to make her jellies and jams.

Roberta was extremely committed to the deaf community, serving on the original Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the 1980s, as well as numerous officer positions in the local deaf clubs in Hays, Hutchinson, and Salina. Her strong opinions on all matters deaf and otherwise were always well known.

Roberta worked many jobs during her years on the farm, finally retiring from Cashco in Ellsworth.&nbsp; Upon her retirement, she and John traveled thousands of miles visiting national parks, family and friends. She also visited Europe with her son John.&nbsp; She spent countless hours sewing and quilting, attending quilting conventions throughout the country with her daughter Mary and many other friends.&nbsp; She completed quilts for every member of her family, which is quite extensive. Along with her children she is survived by eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, each receiving at least one handmade masterpiece.

&nbsp;Funeral services for Roberta will be held on May 28, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Ellsworth, KS. &nbsp;Burial will follow at the Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery.&nbsp; A celebration of her life will be held afterward in the church hall.

The rows of cookies and muffins, rockets and cabinets and photographs and more may seem like interesting displays to passers-by at the county and state fairs. 

But for thousands of Kansas 4-H members who will put their efforts on display this summer, they represent nearly a year’s worth of work and trial-and-error learning. 

“The 4-H year begins in October with young people selecting the projects that they want to learn about the rest of the year,” said Amy Sollock, a 4-H youth development specialist in the southwest region. “So the exhibit that is brought to the fair is reflective of a year’s worth of work.” 

Sollock said once county fair season hits – typically July and August– youth have had several chances to master their new skills and knowledge; some of those attempts are successful and some not-so-successful. 

“We would expect that they would have a lot of practice rounds,” she said. “Of course nobody complains about having too many muffins around the house, or cookies. If it’s a craft or trade such as sewing or woodworking, what they choose to exhibit at the fair is a sample of their best work.” 

For Saline County 4-Hers, the Tri-Rivers Fair is scheduled for Aug. 4-8 and is packed with activities. As the schedule stands now, the parade through downtown Salina will kick things off the night before. The parade is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the intersection of Elm Street and N. Santa Fe Avenue. It will travel south on Santa Fe Avenue to Prescott Avenue.

Loren Johnson is the scheduled grand marshal for the parade, which has the theme of "Barn to be Wild."

Organizations and businesses wanting to participate in the parade are asked to submit their entry forms by July 25. Entries received after July 25 will be placed at the end of the parade. Entry fees are as follows.

●Postmarked by July 25, $20 per business or $10 per non-profit organization

●Postmarked between July 26-31, $30 per business or $20 per non-profit organization

●Anything after July 31 (bring with you the day of the parade), $45 per business and $35 per non-profit organization.

“4-H programs are designed to have a lot of adult volunteers in place to make sure that our kids are learning appropriately for their age and skill level and that they get some guidance and coaching throughout the year,” Sollock said. 

K-State Research and Extension agents can provide a fair book that includes the criteria for entering projects in the county fair, where the projects are displayed and judged by experts in the given area. 

“That’s the part I love the most about any county fair: Kids sit down with an adult who has expertise in a given project area and they have a conversation about what the exhibit is,” Sollock said. “If it’s an art or photography project, for example, youth will sit down and have a conversation with the adult about why they chose to take the photo, and maybe the lighting and the settings they used on their camera. The judges provides feedback about what worked well, what the 4-H member could have done differently… and encourage them to continue their learning experience.”

4-Hers prep for county fairs; Tri-Rivers Fair set for Aug. 4-8

WICHITA – AAA expects a significant rebound in travel this summer, as evidenced by the results of an exclusive survey of Kansans that reveals 61% of respondents are considering or planning to take a trip this summer.* 

AAA Travel is already seeing an increase in bookings that reflects the renewed enthusiasm.

“Optimism coinciding with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and growing consumer confidence are fueling a strong desire to travel this summer as the United States takes steps toward putting the pandemic behind us,” said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas. “The AAA poll shows that Kansans have a pent-up demand for quick getaways and even longer, more extravagant trips – so called ‘Revenge Travel.’”&nbsp;

AAA’s poll asked Kansans about the sentiment that best reflects their feelings about traveling this summer:

•30%&nbsp;feel that their travel will be driven by their need for a “quick getaway”

•24%&nbsp;are planning a longer or more extravagant trip – so called “Revenge Travel”

•21%&nbsp;are choosing to stay at home this summer

•25%&nbsp;are undecided, but say they could make a last minute decision to travel.

COVID Remains a Factor in Some Summer Travel Planning

Summer travel trends are also indicative that people are feeling more comfortable traveling as COVID rates are decreasing. Adding to that, state restrictions are lessening and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) guidance says that fully vaccinated people can resume activities that they did prior to the pandemic, including domestic travel at low risk to themselves, while taking proper precautions.

AAA’s poll also revealed COVID remains a factor influencing Kansans’ summer travel plans:

•23%&nbsp;say they still have COVID-related travel concerns. 

•26%&nbsp;have a strong desire to travel due to pandemic restrictions from the last year. 

•22%&nbsp;feel that their ability to be fully vaccinated is the driving force behind travel plans. 

•29%&nbsp;say that uncertainty about activities and attractions at their destinations is a consideration as part of the planning process.

According to the same poll, in Kansas,64% of respondents said that when thinking about their next trip, they plan to travel with only those in their household or those in their established COVID “bubble.”

“COVID-related safety is still a factor for many travelers, some of whom may be venturing out for the first time in over a year,” Steward added.

As the AAA poll shows, American views about traveling as we emerge from the COVID pandemic are complex. Knowledge of the latest COVID-related restrictions and protocols will be a critical component in all planning.

“Being informed and planning in advance can make the difference between a great vacation and a travel nightmare,” said Matt Bert, travel advisor with AAA Kansas. “AAA is encouraging travelers to check and re-check requirements at all stop off points and destinations as they can change up to the last minute.”

Memorial Day – the Unofficial Start to Summer Travel

With the unofficial start to summer, the Memorial Day weekend, it’s clear that people are feeling more comfortable traveling as COVID rates are decreasing and pandemic restrictions are loosened throughout the U.S.

The West North Central Region, of which Kansas is a part, will see more than 2.98 million people taking Memorial Day week trips, a 56% percent increase over the 1.92 million travelers in 2020, when much of the country and the world&nbsp;was under COVID travel restrictions, if not locked down**, but still less than the region’s 3.63 million Memorial Day travelers in 2019, according to AAA.

&nbsp;The West North Central Region includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota.

AAA expects the&nbsp;number of people in the region traveling over the Memorial Day holiday this year to return to 82% of those who traveled pre-pandemic, in 2019, when a record number of traveled for the holiday weekend.



According to the AAA poll, most Kansans who are staying home for Memorial Day say COVID is not the reason, as they don’t usually travel for this holiday.

The 37 million Americans and nearly 3 million in the West North Central region, however, are predicted to once again kick-off the official start of the summer holiday travel season by celebrating Memorial Day with a trip.

•Auto: The&nbsp;Great American Road Trip&nbsp;has been the most popular type of travel during the pandemic and has historically been the number one choice for the Memorial Day Holiday and that still holds true. The majority of travelers in the West North Central region – 2.83 million – are forecast to travel by vehicle this Memorial Day, an increase of 52% over 2020.

•Air:&nbsp;The number of people in the region flying in 2021 is expected to be almost six times what it was in 2020 when multiple factors kept most people from traveling via airline. About 105,000 residents will travel by air, a 567% increase from 2020.Travelers are reminded that some inflight amenities may be limited or not offered and that some airlines are still limiting capacity with blocked middle seats. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is also now allowing one oversized liquid container of hand sanitizer of up to 12 ounces.&nbsp; Masks are required at all airports and all aircraft. International travelers, including US citizens, must have a negative test result or proof of recovery from COVID before boarding flight to US. &nbsp;COVID testing is not required domestically, except for travel to and from Hawaii, and from island to island in Hawaii.

KS Travel Survey: Pent-up demand for quick getaways, 'revenge' trips

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a Black man, died when a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for about 9 1/2 minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and pleading that he couldn't breathe; Floyd's death, captured on video by a bystander, would lead to worldwide protests, some of which turned violent, and a reexamination of racism and policing in the U.S. 

In 1787, the Constitutional Convention began at the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia after enough delegates had shown up for a quorum.

A judge in Tucson, Arizona, ruled that Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of wounding U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killing six in a shooting rampage, was mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama wrapped up his historic visit to Vietnam before heading to Japan, the site of a two-day summit of wealthy nations. It was announced that about a dozen states were suing the Obama administration over its directive to U.S. public schools to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that matched their gender identity. (A federal judge put the directive on hold after the suit was filed; the Trump administration lifted the Obama guidelines in February 2017.) Actor Johnny Depp's wife, Amber Heard, filed for divorce in Los Angeles, citing irreconcilable differences after 15 months of marriage.

One year ago: President Donald Trump threatened to pull the Republican National Convention from North Carolina if the state's Democratic governor would not agree to allow a full-capacity gathering. (Charlotte would host a scaled-back portion of events; prime-time speeches were delivered from Washington and elsewhere to a largely virtual audience.) WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A jury convicted a 25-year-old Wichita woman of first-degree felony murder after her 2-year-old son died from ingesting methadone. A Sedgwick County jury deliberated about two hours Monday before finding Kimberly Compass guilty in the death of Zayden JayNesahkluah. 

Zayden died of a methadone overdose in a Wichita motel on May 31, 2019. Prosecutors accused Compass of mishandling three bottles of methadone, which had been prescribed to help her kick a heroin habit. It remains unclear exactly how the boy got ahold of the methadone. 

Her defense attorney argued throughout the trial that Compass didn't know the boy ingested the drug. She will be sentenced Aug. 12.

ABILENE - The first Black person to serve on the White House executive staff will be the focus of the next Eisenhower Presidential Library Lunch &amp; Learn program.

The next monthly virtual Lunch &amp; Learn is scheduled for noon Thursday.

The program will look at the life of E. Frederic Morrow, the first Black to serve as a member of the White House executive staff. An ardent supporter of civil rights, Morrow was frustrated with the “lukewarm stand” of the Eisenhower Administration in reference to the movement. John H. Morrow, Jr., nephew of E. Frederic Morrow, will moderate a discussion on Morrow’s life. The conversation will focus on Morrow’s White House years while touching on aspects of his personal life.

John H. Morrow, Jr., is the Franklin and Saye Professor of History at the University of Georgia, where he specializes in the history of war and society and modern European history. In his 50-year career as a professor and administrator, he has received several awards for teaching. John H. Morrow, Jr., has served as a consultant for numerous national museums. His numerous books and articles on the First World War culminated in the honor of the 2019 Pritzker Military Museum and Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing, which is awarded to a living author for a significant body of work dedicated to enriching the understanding of military history and affairs.

Joining John H. Morrow, Jr., will be Michael Birkner of Gettysburg College and Phillip Cunningham of the Amistad Research Center. Birkner is professor of history at Gettysburg College. He is the author or editor of 14 books and many articles on 19th and 20th century American social and political history. Cunningham&nbsp;is the head of research services at the Amistad Research Center.
