ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teen in connection with a stolen car.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a police officer spotted a reported stolen 2011 Chevy Malibu and attempted to stop it at 13th and Main in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

 The vehicle fled from officers and a pursuit followed which ended in the 300 block Kearney when the driver later identified as 18-year-old Malakai M. Short of Kansas City, Missouri, and several passengers bailed out of the vehicle and ran.

Officers apprehended Short in the 600 block North 2nd and a passenger was apprehended in the 100 block Atchison Street. Police booked Short on a requested charge of possession of a stolen vehicle and fleeing and attempting to elude. He was taken to the County Jail. The 17-year-old passenger was arrested on a requested charge of interference with law enforcement and later released to a guardian, according to Wilson.

She was united in marriage to Ramchandra Patel.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; They moved to the United States 10 years ago and to Belleville, KS four years ago to be near family.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jasuben was a homemaker and housewife.

She is survived by her husband, Ramchandra Patel of Belleville, KS; one son, Satishbhai Ramchandra Patel; two daughters, Menkakumari Subhash Bhakta and Rina Kamlesh Patel; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild;&nbsp; three brothers,&nbsp; Maganbhai Patel, Bhagabhai Patel, and Manherbhai Patel; and one sister Savitaben Desai.

Services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 18, 2021 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, 1322 19th&nbsp;St., Belleville, KS.

Cremation will follow the services with scattering at a later date in India.

Friends may sign the register book prior to the services from 5 p.m. until&nbsp;service time on Sunday.

Ralph enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving four years from 1957-1961.

He is survived by his sister Luetta Chaltas, numerous nieces, nephews and many good friends around the Abilene area. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Don Reese, Frank Reese and Dale Reese; and one sister, Charlene McNary.

Franklyn Pekarek, 79, passed away on July 10, 2021 at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; In the minutes before death, the Lord gave Frank the opportunity to tell each member of his family how much he loved them, gave last minute guidance with their lives, and said “goodbye.”&nbsp; Throughout this time, he kept telling his family that he was so excited to see Jesus.&nbsp; He passed&nbsp; at 7:35 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Franklyn Pekarek was born in Cicero, Illinois on March 27, 1942 to Frank E. and Mildred (Mesha) Pekarek.&nbsp; He lived his early life in Chicago, and moved to Kansas where he served as an intern in the Lutheran Church in Lindsborg, KS.&nbsp; While there, he met his future wife, Shirley.&nbsp; During his 48-year ministry, he served churches in Kansas and Colorado.&nbsp;

During his lifetime, Frank enjoyed reading history books, Civil War Reenacting, and visiting with his friends.&nbsp; His family was always very important to him.

He is survived by his wife Shirley (Dahlsten) Pekarek; daughters: Jennifer Pekarek of Salina, Leanne Grauerholz (Byron) of Salina; son, Brian Pekarek (Robyn) of Abilene; grandchildren are Ellie and Ben Grauerholz of Salina, and Seth, Thad, and Bobbi Pekarek of Abilene; other family members include a sister, Betty Cillo, nephew Don Cillo of Temple, TX; niece Pat Mitchell, of Las Cruces, NM; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jerry and Lo Dahlsten (MN); and nieces Jill Dahlsten and Carol Stevens (Jon) and daughter Brooke.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have made an arrest.

Just before&nbsp; 4a.m. Thursday, police responded to Ed Bozarth auto dealership, 3731 SW Topeka Blvd. in Topeka after receiving a report of someone burglarizing multiple vehicles on the property, according to police department spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Responding officers located a man walking in the parking lot matching the description of the suspect later identified as 39-year-old David A. Thomas. A police K-9 apprehended&nbsp; Thomas and he&nbsp;was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested&nbsp;charges of Burglary, Theft &lt; $1,500 Motor Vehicle&nbsp; and interference with law enforcement.

Linda Louise (Ayers) Foster, 65, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021 after a long battle of COPD and lung cancer. Linda was born on September 27, 1955 to William Carson and Thelma Rose &nbsp;Ayres in Arkansas. 

As a child, she excelled in many sports, especially basketball. After graduating from Hill City, Kansas High School in 1973 she was awarded a basketball scholarship to Colby Community College. She was an excellent cook and pursued that as her lifetime career. She took several classes and became a certified baker. Linda was known to make the best homemade cinnamon rolls around. Linda served as a baker and cook at school and at McPherson Hospital where she retired 18 months ago. 

Linda loved to bake her famous cinnamon rolls, to play bingo, thoroughly enjoyed scratching lottery tickets for winners, enjoyed being with people, and being at her children and grandchildren’s sporting events which she seldom missed. She was also a big KU fan. Her kindness to others will always be remembered. 

She is preceded in death by her father; three sisters, Lucille, Shirley, Brenda; and four brothers, Larry, Jerry, Alvin, and Kenny Ayers. 

She is survived by her mother Thelma Ayers; brother and his wife, Kim and Lana Ayers; four sons, Brian Billinger of Newton, Bradley Billinger of Canton, Kansas, Brent Billinger of Canton, Kansas, Christopher Billinger of Herington, Kansas; two daughters, Brandy Gutierrez of Great Bend, Kansas and Krystal Billinger of McPherson, Kansas; 11 grandchildren. 

Linda’s wishes were to not have a funeral service, but to have a life celebration memorial service which will be announced at a later time.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Friends have <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/wsph3-support-for-the-russell-family">established a fundraiser </a>to assist the family of a pregnant Kansas woman who died after a 4-vehicle crash in Wichita that involved a driver fleeing police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On GoFundme friends wrote: Tuesday July 7, we lost an amazing individual. Samantha Russell tragically passed away in a senseless traffic incident. She leaves behind her husband and her brand new baby boy, Mac. Samantha was an amazing individual who left an impact on everyone she met.

Just before 5 pm on Tuesday, police were dispatched to a disturbance with a gun at a hotel in the 7500 block of West Taft in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.&nbsp;

At the scene, a 35-year-old male victim reported that a man had robbed him at gunpoint. The victim was able to run away and reported seeing the suspect leaving the hotel with another male suspect.

The robbery suspect was identified as 34-year-old Jamie Chavez of Wichita, who was wanted in connection to a previous robbery. He was located near Maple and Ridge and taken into custody. The other suspect identified as<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=161387">&nbsp;Javan Jermaine Ervin, 37,</a>&nbsp;Wichita,&nbsp;&nbsp;began to flee in a 2002 Dodge Ram northbound on Ridge Road. Officers began pursuing him, but the pursuit was terminated due to the high speed and traffic conditions.

The pickup continued at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at the red traffic light at Central Avenue and collided with a westbound 2000 Chevy Silverado driven by Jordan Samuel Peltzer, 40, Henderson, Nevada.

The impact caused the driver side rear wheels and tires to detach from the vehicle which collided with a 2016 Jeep Compass driven by Connie L. Holt, 73, Wichita, that was stopped on the inside left turn lane from South bound Ridge Road to East bound Central Avenue.

The Dodge Ram then collided with 2019 Mazda CX3 driven by 22-year-old Samantha Lee Russell of Wichita which was stopped behind the Jeep. The Dodge Ram then rolled onto its top and came to a rest in the North bound lanes of Ridge Road.

EMS transported Russell to Wesley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.&nbsp;She was 33 weeks pregnant. Doctors delivered the baby who was hospitalized in critical condition, according to Macy.

Ervin, Peltzer and Holt were not injured. Ervin attempted to run from the crash but police quickly took him into custody.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police also booked Jamie Chavez into the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility on requested charges of Aggravated Robbery (one from a previous case) and felon in possession of a firearm. Chavez is on parole through the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Officers began pursuing him, but the pursuit was terminated due to the high speed and traffic conditions.The pickup continued at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at the red traffic light at Central Avenue and collided with a westbound 2000 Chevy Silverado driven by Jordan Samuel Peltzer, 40, Henderson, Nevada.The impact caused the driver side rear wheels and tires to detach from the vehicle which collided with a 2016 Jeep Compass driven by Connie L. Holt, 73, Wichita, that was stopped on the inside left turn lane from South bound Ridge Road to East bound Central Avenue.The Dodge Ram then collided with 2019 Mazda CX3 driven by 22-year-old Samantha Lee Russell of Wichita which was stopped behind the Jeep. The Dodge Ram then rolled onto its top and came to a rest in the North bound lanes of Ridge Road.EMS transported Russell to Wesley Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.&nbsp;She was 33 weeks pregnant. Doctors delivered the baby who was hospitalized in critical condition, according to Macy.<figure>

Chavez is on parole through the Kansas Department of Corrections.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas felon after a violent attack ona woman.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to an assault call at a business in the 3000 block of East Douglas in Wichita, according to Office Charley Davidson.

At the scene, a 55-year-old woman reported going to her car after leaving the business when she was approached by&nbsp;64-year-old Veryl Crawford of Wichita. He pushed her and struck her multiple times with a rock causing serious injuries.&nbsp; Crawford then took the woman's cell phone and wallet and fled on foot.

With the help of an eyewitness, officers located Crawford in the 3200 block of East Chatfield as he was attempting to hide evidence.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police arrested Crawford without incident and booked into jail on requested charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, interference with law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a warrant through the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), according to Davidson.

Crawford has multiple previous felony convictions and is currently on parolee through KDOC.

He pushed her and struck her multiple times with a rock causing serious injuries.&nbsp; Crawford then took the woman's cell phone and wallet and fled on foot.With the help of an eyewitness, officers located Crawford in the 3200 block of East Chatfield as he was attempting to hide evidence.&nbsp; &nbsp;Police arrested Crawford without incident and booked into jail on requested charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, interference with law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a warrant through the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC), according to Davidson.Crawford has multiple previous felony convictions and is currently on parolee through KDOC.

The caller left the scene prior to officer’s arrival. A short time later, two people arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle. Both had non-life threatening injuries believed to be consistent with the earlier shooting.

While investigating the shooting, officers located a 20-year-old later identified as Tyzale J. Banks-Hall, 20 of Topeka who was in possession of a stolen firearm.&nbsp;

After further investigation, police arrested Banks-Hall and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Possession of stolen Firearm with value less than $25,000.&nbsp;

Marjorie “Marj” Lee (Williams) Brown, 87, of Colby, died Tuesday, July 
6, 2021, at the University of Colorado Hospital, in Aurora, CO. She was 
born in Oklahoma City, OK, to Mack Olaf and Florence Elizabeth (Wheaton)
 Williams. She had one older sister and a younger sister and brother. 
When Marj was 12 years old, her family relocated to Colby, KS, where her
 father did carpentry work. At the age of 15, her parents divorced, and 
her mother remarried a year later to Robert Richards, also of Colby. 
This added two stepsisters and a stepbrother to the family. 
Marj graduated from Colby High School in May of 1953 and married James 
“Jim” M. Brown, on November 22, of that same year. Jim was drafted into
 the United States Army and left for Korea just 4 days after their 
wedding. To this union, the couple had three children. After Jim’s 
return from the service, he worked as a manager of the Midwest Energy 
Power Plant, in Colby. Marj took art and English courses at Colby 
College. She was also active in the Colby United Methodist Church, where
 she taught Sunday School and instructed the children’s Cherub Choir. 
Marj belonged to the Colby Music Club, the first High Plains Art Club 
and Hoe and Hope Garden Club. 
Once her children were all in school, Marj went to work for Bill James 
at Prairie Printers Inc., of Colby, where she did artwork and put 
publications together. Later, she also worked as a news reporter for the
 James’s Prairie Drummer Newspaper for 12 years. She and Editor Bill 
James co-authored the book, History of Gem, Kansas. 
After the James’s sold the business and moved away, Marj donated her 
time teaching Psychiatric Remotivation classes at the Good Samaritan 
Nursing Home. She later graduated from Colby Community College with 
Emergency Medical Technician and Licensed Practical Nurse degrees. She 
went to work at the old St. Thomas Hospital, in Colby. After working 
there for 10 years, she attended Garden City College to earn her 
Registered Nurse license. Marj then went to work at the newly built 
Citizens Medical Center, in Colby, where she was the head nurse in the 
Intensive Care Unit. During that time, she became the first editor of 
hospitals new newspaper, The Health Harvester. 
Marj retired from nursing in June of 1999 and went back to her artwork 
by assisting Kenneth Mitchell to paint the large mural in the new Bedker
 Hall, at Colby Community College, along with several other of 
Mitchell’s former students. Later she restarted the High Plains Art Club
 and started the Colby Writer’s Group. She publisher her novel, Secretes
 of Roberts Mountain, in August of 2014. During the 2015 Colby High 
School All School Reunion she was honored with the schools High Flying 
Eagle Award. 
For a short time after her retirement Marj worked as a reporter for the 
Colby Free Press newspaper. However, she felt that did not leave her 
time to work on the writing she wanted to do, or on her artwork, so she 
quit the paper, but continued to write a column for them a couple of 
times a month titled, Marj’s Snippets. 
Going before her in death were her parents; stepfather; in-laws, Ralph 
and Myrtle Brown, of Colby; stepbrother David Richards; great- 
granddaughter Rayanna Marie Harsh; great-grandson Aaron James Brown, 
Jr.; brother-in-law Myron Hankins, of Richland, WA, and all her aunts 
and uncles. 
Those left to mourn her passing are her husband; three children, Duane 
(Velvola) Brown, of Colby, Allen (Debbie) Brown, of Tucson, AZ and Linda
 (Rusty Depe) Brown, of Colby; siblings, Shirley Hankins, of Richland,

In 1776, Col. John Nixon gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, outside the State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia. 

In 1853, an expedition led by Commodore Matthew Perry arrived in Yedo Bay, Japan, on a mission to seek diplomatic and trade relations with the Japanese.

In 1889, The Wall Street Journal was first published. 

In 1911, cowgirl "Two-Gun Nan" Aspinwall became the first woman to make a solo trip by horse across the United States, arriving in New York 10 months after departing San Francisco.

In 1950, President Harry S. Truman named Gen. Douglas MacArthur commander-in-chief of United Nations forces in Korea. (Truman ended up sacking MacArthur for insubordination nine months later.)
