WICHITA – Nationwide, more than 7,000 people died in crashes involving teen drivers from 2010 to 2019 during the 100 Deadliest Days,&nbsp; the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That’s more than seven people a day each summer, compared to the rest of the year (six people per day). 

The combination of schools closed for the summer, summer jobs and activities, and COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, could prove deadly as teens take to the road this summer. AAA recommends that now is a good time for parents to both model safe driving behaviors and help ensure their teens practice them too.

"There are more daily deaths in crashes involving teen drivers during the summer months than the rest of the year because teens tend to have more unstructured time behind the wheel," said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. "So what can be done? We can encourage teens to double down on staying focused when driving, buckling up for every ride, and driving within posted speed limits."

Due to their inexperience, teen drivers are at a higher risk of crashes. According to the AAA Foundation&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d84%3a7%3e3-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=425320&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">2019 Traffic Safety Culture Index</a>, about 72% of teen drivers aged 16-18 admitted to having engaged in at least one of the following risky behaviors in the past 30 days:

●Driving 10 mph over the speed limit on a residential street (47%).

 ●Driving 15 mph over the speed limit on a freeway (40%). 

As teens take to the road this summer, especially with pandemic restrictions easing, AAA recommends that now is an excellent time to remind parents to model safe driving behaviors and help ensure their teens practice them too.&nbsp; Parents should also consider having their teens complete a comprehensive driver education course to learn the rules of the road.

“Parents remain the best line of defense to keep everyone safe behind the wheel,” said Steward. “It’s never too soon to educate teens on the dangers of distracted driving, speeding, and the impairing effects of alcohol and marijuana. But we can’t just tell teens about the dangers. We must also refrain from engaging in risky driving behaviors and ensure we are modeling good behavior.”



To keep roads safer this summer, AAA encourages parents to:

●Talk with teens early and often about abstaining from dangerous behavior behind the wheel, such as speeding, impairment and distracted driving.

●Teach by example, and minimize risky behavior when driving.

 ●Establish a&nbsp;parent-teen driving agreement&nbsp;that sets family rules for teen drivers.

●Conduct at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving with their teen.

AAA suggests that summer is always a good time for adult drivers to practice safe driving behaviors with their teens. AAA: 100 Deadliest Days begin for teens as COVID-19 restrictions ease

Today is Monday, June 7, the 158th day of 2021. There are 207 days left in the year. 

On June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway ended in a decisive victory for American naval forces over Imperial Japan, marking a turning point in the Pacific War. 

In 1712, Pennsylvania's colonial assembly voted to ban the further importation of slaves. 

In 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia offered a resolution to the Continental Congress stating "That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States."

In 1892, Homer Plessy, a "Creole of color," was arrested for refusing to leave a whites-only car of the East Louisiana Railroad. (Ruling on his case, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld "separate but equal" racial segregation, a concept it renounced in 1954.)

Ten years ago: Moammar Gadhafi stood defiant in the face of the heaviest and most punishing NATO airstrikes to date, declaring in an audio address carried on Libyan state television, "We will not kneel!" Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, the al-Qaida mastermind behind the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, was killed at a security checkpoint in Mogadishu by Somali forces.

Five years ago: Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump claimed their parties' presidential nominations following contests in New Jersey, California, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota. Five people were killed and four were injured when a pickup struck a large group of bicyclists from behind on a two-lane road in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. (The driver of the pickup, Charles Pickett Jr., who was under the influence of drugs, was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison.)

One year ago: A majority of Minneapolis City Council members said they supported dismantling the police department. (The idea later stalled, but it became part of a national debate over police reform.) Peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd continued in New York City, as Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an end to the 8 p.m. curfew that had been in effect. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lifted the city's curfew and the city reopened downtown train stations following days of protests that largely remained peaceful. Thousands took to the streets of European cities to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement. A tally by Johns Hopkins University revealed that the worldwide death toll from COVID-19 had surpassed 400,000. Tropical Storm Cristobal came ashore in Louisiana, sending dangerous weather much farther east through coastal Mississippi and Alabama and spawning a tornado in Florida.

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities spent two hours persuading a wanted fugitive from Nemaha County to surrender to law enforcement Friday night, according to Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse.

The sheriff’s office received information that Robert Lee Rye III, 35, of Wetmore, was at a residence at 12349 244th&nbsp;Lane, Holton.

Rye was wanted out of Nemaha County on a felony probation warrant, according to Morse.

At 11:16 p.m. Rye surrendered without incident to law enforcement. Rye was booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of interference with law enforcement and on a felony probation warrant. The Holton Police and Kansas Highway Patrol assisted with the arrest, according to Morse.

Donna LaVerne (Sims) Brown, 89, of Winfield, KS, died January 3, 2021. Donna was born on January 5, 1931 to Carrie Leona Anderson Sims and Ward Peter Sims in Minneola, Kansas. Donna was a “girly” girl who loved wearing pretty dresses, many made from flour sacks that were designed with flowers or cute patterns. She loved music which included playing the piano and then the trombone later on, spending time with her best friends Nannette Pitman and Betty Lou Sandidge, listening to her mother read stories in the evening, and teasing her older brothers. During Easter break of her sophomore year at Southwestern College, Donna married her sweetheart, Clinton Brown, whom she had met at the “Toot N’ Tell’m” drive-in at Dodge City in the summer of 1949. Clinton was a basketball star at Pittsburg State Teacher’s College and after their marriage they remained inseparable for the next 64 years until his death in 2015, except for the year he spent serving his country in the Koren War. After Clinton returned home, they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, before returning to Donna’s hometown where he began a career in education and they started a family. Over the next 35 years, they lived in Lincoln and McPherson as well as Minneola where Donna worked for Lincoln School and then accepted a job with People Bank &amp; Trust in McPherson, KS, where she worked until 2001 as Loan Officer and the Board Secretary while he continued teaching and coaching. Donna and Clinton were both active members of the First Christian Church in McPherson, teaching the Young Thinkers Sunday School class, serving as elders in the church, and working with the weekly church youth programs. Once they were both retired in 2001, they moved to Sublette to be near to three of their grandchildren and following them as they crossed the state with stops at Columbus, Yates Center, and Colby. In May, 2015, Donna and Clinton moved to Derby where he was admitted to Westview Senior Living Center and she rented an apartment at the Greens, right on the Derby Country Club golf course. When Clinton died on July 15, 2015, Donna continued living there until she moved in with her son Kevin, and daughter-in-law Pam, at Winfield in December of 2019. She enjoyed living in Winfield, but the effects of kidney failure and years of dialysis were hard on Donna and she passed peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning January 3, 2021. The most important things in Donna’s life were her family, friends, and faith in God. She stayed active with women’s group through the Woodlawn Methodist Church in Derby, two book clubs as well as reading many other books, eating out with friends, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and promoting Camp Hope, the camp for kids with cancer that she started with the American Cancer Society in honor of her two children who died of cancer. “Ma Donna” was the director of Camp Hope for its first 18 years and has remained involved through the last 18 years as one of three members emeritus. SHAWNEE COUNTY–Law enforcement authorities are investigating an attempted armed robbery and have made an arrest.

Just before 8a.m. Friday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding an attempted armed robbery that just occurred in the 7100block of SW Montara Parkway, according to Deputy Shayna Anderson.

 The armed suspect attempted to steal an occupied vehicle and then fled. Deputies arrived on scene and located the suspect identified as 40-year-old James McKay IV of Topeka nearby and took him into custody.

McKay was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charge of aggravated robbery and interference with law enforcement.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office’s Patrol Unit, Detectives Unit, K9 Unit and Crime Scene Unit are still actively searching for a firearm that was used in this armed robbery.

Investigators believe the suspect may have discarded the firearm somewhere in the Montara neighborhood between the 7100 block of SW Montara Parkway and the 1700 block of SW Clearview Lane.

Police asked any citizen that may encounter this unsecured firearm to immediately notify law enforcement and not touch the firearm.&nbsp;

Deputies arrest Kan. attempted carjacking suspect

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges following a traffic stop in Shawnee Kansas.

Just&nbsp; before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 Chrysler Town &amp; Country minivan near NW Morse Street and NW Jackson Street for an equipment violation, according Deputy Shayna Anderson. During the investigation, illegal narcotics were located.

Deputies arrested the passenger, Tarji J. Marks, 31, of Topeka and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia as well as two misdemeanor warrants out of the City of Topeka.

 </figure>SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges following a traffic stop in Shawnee Kansas.Just&nbsp; before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 Chrysler Town &amp; Country minivan near NW Morse Street and NW Jackson Street for an equipment violation, according Deputy Shayna Anderson. During the investigation, illegal narcotics were located.Deputies arrested the passenger, Tarji J. Marks, 31, of Topeka and booked her into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia as well as two misdemeanor warrants out of the City of Topeka.

Organic abstractions and poetry come together in the latest exhibit in the Salina Public Library.

Artist Kayla Borell’s exhibit “Soil Take Me Home” is on display in Salina Public Library’s Gallery 708 through July 23. 

The public is welcome to view the exhibit during library hours — 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.&nbsp;The library is located at 301 W. Elm Street.

The show includes nine paintings that feature organic abstractions of plants, soil and organic forms and nine hand-stitched, self-written poems on handmade paper.

Borell’s paintings use color, texture and lines to empower a diversity of exploration and experimentation of materials working together on a painted surface. Each piece expresses an understanding of growth, reincarnation, discovery in one’s identity, and a reconciliation to a particular emotion. 

Borell has always been an emotional person, but she didn’t know what to do with it until she turned to art which became a way of life. Now she uses that idea in her creative process to work through understanding different emotions from personal experiences, memories and places in life.

Borell attended Bethany College (2019) earning a B.A. in Studio Art: Painting/Ceramics. As well as majoring in Visual Art Administration and is receiving her M.A. in Arts Management and Leadership at Wichita State University. Currently, Borell is the full-time Director of Education at the Salina Art Center. She is an adjunct art instructor at Bethany College, teaching ceramics and intro-level art classes. She enjoys books, plants, and home improvement projects.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect following a burglary in Shawnee County.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a vehicle burglary and theft that just occurred in the 5800 block of NW 75 Highway, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Deputies responded and, with information from a citizen, were able to locate the suspect vehicle. The red 2018 Chevrolet Colorado was stopped near NE 24 Highway and NE Goldwater Road.

During the investigation deputies located multiple stolen items from the recent burglary and items associated with other Jefferson County cases. They arrested Lindsey L. Wabaunsee, 34, Topeka and Jessica, D. Garza, 32, of Horton and booked them Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Wabaunsee is being held on requested charges of burglary, theft, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and transporting an open container. Garza is being held on requested charges of burglary, theft, possession of stolen property and felony criminal damage to property.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas man in connection with an armed robbery arrested after a high speed chase.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police officers traveling westbound on Kellogg in Wichita and observed a 2001 silver Honda Accord traveling at 97 miles per hour, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle when the driver refused to stop, accelerated, and fled from officers.&nbsp; Officers also learned the vehicle was involved in a weekend robbery and shooting in Wichita, according to Davidson.

A short vehicle pursuit ensued, and was called off in the area of Central and Grove due to excessive speeds by the suspect driver.

At Central and Hillside, the vehicle collided with a gold 2008 Buick Lucerne being driven by a 37-year-old man.&nbsp; He sustained minor injuries, according to Davidson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One suspect identified as 20-year-old Jacob Caddell and two others fled from the Honda on foot.&nbsp; Police officers searched the area for the suspects with the assistance of a K9 who found Caddell&nbsp; hiding in a garage nearby. Police took him into custody with the assistance of the K9.&nbsp; 

EMS transported Caddell to an area hospital for treatment of minor injures from a dog bite and then booked him into jail.&nbsp; Police did not locate the two other two suspects.

While searching, officers also located a handgun, rifle, and a backpack with stolen items.&nbsp;&nbsp;

During the crash investigation, detectives learned of Caddell’s involvement in a Tuesday evening armed robbery at a KWIK shop in the 2700 Block of South Oliver in Wichita, according to Davidson.

Police K9 sends Kan. armed robbery suspect to hospital, jail

Marjorie Mae Walthers was born on July 23, 1932, on the Chizek home place near Cuba, the daughter of Ernest and Amelia (Plucar) Chizek. Marjorie grew up on the family farm, and attended Cuba schools, graduating from Cuba High School in 1950. Following high school, Marjorie attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, obtaining her provisional teacher’s certificate.

Marjorie was united in marriage to Loren “Dean” Walthers on August 26th, 1951, at the Cuba Presbyterian Church. Following her wedding, Marjorie taught in the Cuba grade school for a few years, and then in 1953, daughter Debra was born, and Marjorie chose to stay home and be a Mom and help Dean build the family business, and then in 1955, son David was born.

Marjorie was Dean’s right hand at Walther’s Oil, where she worked by Dean’s side and together they built a strong family business, enjoying working together each day. Marjorie and Dean made their family, their company, and Cuba their life. They lived in the same home their entire married lives, which kept changing to meet the needs of their growing family, and to entertain family and friends. 

Marjorie was also very involved in numerous community groups and organizations including Eastern Star, Guild, and SOMA (Senior Oil Marketers Association). She was a lifetime member of the Cuba Presbyterian Church. She loved being around family and friends and would always go the extra mile to make everyone feel special. One of her favorite holidays was Easter. She enjoyed being able to provide whatever was necessary to see those around her happy. She didn’t know a stranger or a stray cat that happened to show up at her door. (They knew this would be a good home). She always had room in her heart for them.

Marjorie passed away peacefully at her home on May 31, 2021, at the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 8 days. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Dean in 2013, sister Violet Garwood, and brother-in-laws Harry “Jim” Garwood and Charles Lang.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter Debra Ann Beems and her husband Dave of Concordia, son David Dean Walthers and his wife Gloria of Cuba, sister Shirley Lang of Salina, step-grandchildren Jeremy Beems and his children Landon and Laikyn of Ottawa, and Jill Billinger and her husband Joe and their children Zack, Dylan and Garret of Hays, other family, and many friends.

Memorial services will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Cuba on Friday, June 11, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Phil Goombi officiating, and eulogies provided by Randy Paugh and Judy Keller. Committal services will follow at National Bohemian Cemetery #13, rural Cuba. A luncheon will be served at the community hall.

Friends may sign Marjorie’s book on Thursday, June 10, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville.

(Chauvin would be convicted on all charges.) Defense Secretary Mark Esper took issue with President Donald Trump's threats to use the full force of the military to quell street protests. Trump's former defense secretary, James Mattis, denounced Trump's heavy-handed use of military force to quell protests near the White House. Seattle officials abruptly ended a city-wide curfew that had been in place for days amid massive demonstrations over the death of George Floyd. Enforcing a curfew, police in New York City moved in on crowds of demonstrators, at times blasting people with pepper spray. Results published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug promoted by President Donald Trump to prevent COVID-19, was no better than placebo pills in preventing illness from the coronavirus.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the fatal weekend shooting of 32-year-old Shakeita Young, 32, in Topeka on Saturday have arrested 31-year-old Kajun D. Brock, according to Topeka Police Lt. Shane Hilton.

On Wednesday, police asked the public for help to locate Brock. The United States Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force located him&nbsp; in Topeka on Wednesday evening.&nbsp;

Police booked Brock into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following charges and requested charges of Murder in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

First responders found Young suffering from a gunshot. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
