SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of burglaries and have a suspect in custody.

On July 15, police asked the public for help to identify a suspect in the burglaries that occurred over the last few months at various businesses in downtown Topeka, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.

Police received multiple responses and as a result of the investigation, police identified Stan W. Chavez, 35 of Topeka as a suspect.

On Monday police located and arrested Chavez and later booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Burglary, Criminal damage and Theft.

Tip leads to arrest of Kansas burglary suspect

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a weekend high-speed chase and attempting to locate 32-year-old Robert R. Boyles following a vehicle pursuit in the 500 block of SW Gage Boulevard early Sunday morning, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver,&nbsp; 32-year-old Robert R. Boyles of Colorado, fled the scene and has not been located. 

Just after 1a.m.&nbsp; Sunday, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a spray painted black 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck in the 500 block of SW Gage Boulevard for a stolen license plate. 

The driver later identified as Boyles refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The Topeka Police Department assisted and successfully deployed stop sticks at SW 15th Street and SW Gage Boulevard. 

In the 3700 block of SW Cambridge Avenue, the driver drove out of the lane of traffic and struck a deputy’s vehicle before continuing northbound on SW Gage Boulevard, according to Christian.

In the 2000 block of SW Atwood Avenue, two passengers fled from the vehicle and were taken into custody. Sarah L. Followell, 32, of Topeka was arrested, booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections and charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement and a narcotics warrant out of Colorado. 

The other passenger David W. Bentley, 42, of Topeka, was transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response for minor injuries and will be charged with interference with law enforcement.

VAN HORN, Texas (AP) — Jeff Bezos blasted into space Tuesday on his rocket company’s first flight with people on board, becoming the second billionaire in just over a week to ride his own spacecraft.

The Amazon founder was accompanied by a hand-picked group: his brother, an 18-year-old from the Netherlands and an 82-year-old aviation pioneer from Texas — the youngest and oldest to ever fly in space.

Named after America’s first astronaut, Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket soared from remote West Texas on the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, a date chosen by Bezos for its historical significance. He held fast to it, even as Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson pushed up his own flight from New Mexico in the race for space tourist dollars and beat him to space by nine days.

Unlike Branson’s piloted rocket plane, Bezos’ capsule was completely automated and required no official staff on board for the anticipated 10-minute, up-and-down flight.

Blue Origin was shooting for an altitude of roughly 66 miles (106 kilometers), more than 10 miles (16 kilometers) higher than Branson’s July 11 ride. The 60-foot (18-meter) booster accelerated to Mach 3 or three times the speed of sound to get the capsule high enough, before separating and aiming for a vertical landing.

The passengers were expected to get three to four minutes of weightlessness to float around the spacious white capsule. Then the window-filled capsule was going to head to a parachute touchdown on the desert floor, with Bezos and his guests briefly experiencing nearly six times the force of gravity, or 6 G’s, on the way back.

Sharing Bezos’ dream-come-true adventure was Wally Funk, from the Dallas area, one of 13 female pilots who went through the same tests as NASA’s all-male astronaut corps in the early 1960s but never made it into space.

Joining them on the ultimate joyride was the company’s first paying customer, Oliver Daemen, a last-minute fill-in for the mystery winner of a $28 million auction who opted for a later flight. The Dutch teen’s father took part in the auction, and agreed on a lower undisclosed price last week when Blue Origin offered his son the vacated seat.

Blue Origin — founded by Bezos in 2000 in Kent, Washington, near Amazon’s Seattle headquarters — has yet to open ticket sales to the public or reveal the price. For now, it’s booking auction bidders. Two more passenger flights are planned by year’s end, said Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith.

The recycled rocket and capsule that carried up Tuesday’s passengers were used on the last two space demos, according to company officials.

Virgin Galactic already has more than 600 reservations at $250,000 apiece. Founded by Branson in 2004, the company has sent crew into space four times and plans two more test flights from New Mexico before launching customers next year.

Blue Origin’s approach was slower and more deliberate. After 15 successful unoccupied test flights to space since 2015, Bezos finally declared it was time to put people on board. The Federal Aviation Administration agreed last week, approving the commercial space license.

Bezos, 57, who also owns The Washington Post, claimed the first seat. The next went to his 50-year-old brother, Mark Bezos, an investor and volunteer firefighter, then Funk and Daemen. They spent two days together in training.

University of Chicago space historian Jordan Bimm said the passenger makeup is truly remarkable. Imagine if the head of NASA decided he wanted to launch in 1961 instead of Alan Shepard on the first U.S. spaceflight, he said in an email.

“That would have been unthinkable!” Bimm said. “”It shows just how much the idea of who and what space is for has changed in the last 60 years.”

Bezos stepped down earlier this month as Amazon’s CEO and just last week donated $200 million to renovate the National Air and Space Museum. Most of the $28 million from the auction has been distributed to space advocacy and education groups, with the rest benefiting Blue Origin’s Club for the Future, its own education effort.

Fewer than 600 people have reached the edge of space or beyond. Until Tuesday, the youngest was 25-year-old Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov and the oldest at 77 was Mercury-turned-shuttle astronaut John Glenn.

Both Bezos and Branson want to drastically increase those overall numbers, as does SpaceX’s Elon Musk, who’s skipping brief space hops and sending his private clients straight to orbit for tens of millions apiece, with the first flight coming up in September.

Despite appearances, Bezos and Branson insist they weren’t trying to outdo each other by strapping in themselves. Bezos noted this week that only one person can lay claim to being first in space: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who rocketed into orbit on April 12, 1961.

“This isn’t a competition, this is about building a road to space so that future generations can do incredible things in space,” he said on NBC’s ”Today.”

Blue Origin is working on a massive rocket, New Glenn, to put payloads and people into orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The company also wants to put astronauts back on the moon with its proposed lunar lander Blue Moon; it’s challenging NASA’s sole contract award to SpaceX.

Thieves have rendered the Salina Area United Way's Community Action Mobile Outreach vehicle inoperable and now the organization is faced with a large bill to get it going again.

In late May, United Way staff noticed that the vehicle, known as the CAMO Van, wouldn't start. The vehicle had been parked in the lot next to the non-profit, which is located at 113 N. Seventh Street, Suite 201.

A mechanic checked the CAMO Van and determined that someone had stolen the vehicle's catalytic converter and cut electrical wires in the vehicle, according to information from the United Way.

It will cost the United Way more than $1,200 to have the wiring repaired and the catalytic converter replaced.

During the summer, the Salina Area United Way uses the CAMO Van to transport books to eight summer meal sites as a part of the agency's eight-week summer reading program, Raising Active Wild Readers (RAWR). Last summer, volunteers and staff used the CAMO Van to distribute 2030 books to children, partnering with USD 305 during the pandemic.

“It’s a real blow to our budget. Just think how many books we could purchase for the Raising Active Wild Readers, RAWR, program, with $1,200,” said Salina Area United Way Program Director Brenda Gutierrez.

A fund has been set up at the Salina Area United Way to help cover repair costs for the CAMO Van, Gutierrez said.

Thieves shut down United Way's CAMO Van; fund established

Today is Tuesday, July 20, the 201st day of 2021. There are 164 days left in the year. 

On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon after reaching the surface in their Apollo 11 lunar module.

RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man in connection with a domestic dispute that led to a kidnapping and a child critically injured after she was shot.

Just after 11a.m. Monday a man and woman from Wichita K were involved in a domestic dispute which resulted in the woman being brought to a dead-end road at Cheney Lake in the vicinity of Yoder Road and Sun City Road, according to a media release from the Reno County Sheriff.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Kamden Campos, took the woman to the edge of the water with intent to harm her. While he was distracted, the woman jumped in the car and fled the scene. As she fled, the suspect fired multiple shots toward the vehicle from a handgun.

The woman noticed the child moving around in the car seat and pulled over to discover the girl had been shot in the back. While on the phone with 911 dispatchers, emergency personnel and first responders located her in Sedgwick County. The child was rushed to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Multiple agencies responded to the area of Yoder Rd and Silver lake Rd to begin looking for the suspect. Kansas Highway Patrol aircraft, Sedgwick County Drone, Reno County Drone, and many Deputies and officers began to scour the area looking for Campos. A perimeter was established where it was believed the suspect was last seen. The aircraft identified someone walking matching the description and guided officers to him. Just before 2p.m., officers too Campos into custody without any further incident.

Deputies took him to the Reno County Correctional Facility where he was booked on requested charges of Attempted Murder in 1st Degree, Aggravated Kidnapping, and Possession of Stolen property. His bond is set at $2,101,500.00.

Late Monday, the sheriff reported the child had come out of surgery. She is stable and critical.&nbsp;

Update: Toddler injured after kidnapping, shooting at Kan. Lake

MEADE COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Meade man following a standoff at a residence on Sunday, according to a media release from the KBI.

Just before 7 a.m., the Meade County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance after a male subject, who was known to possess firearms, barricaded himself inside a home at 617 E. Vine St. in Meade, Kan. The KBI’s High Risk Warrant Team responded.

A deputy from the Meade County Sheriff’s Office had made contact with 38-year-old Daryl J. Wilkerson, of Meade, at about 5:30 a.m., when he tried to arrest him related to allegations of harassment and assault. When told he would be arrested, Wilkerson ran into the home and refused to come out.

During the standoff, verbal contact was made with Wilkerson and negotiators attempted to convince him to surrender peacefully. At approximately 2:45 p.m., he emerged from the house in an angry state. When he would not comply with commands and attempted to return inside, a KBI agent fired a less lethal munition at him, striking him. Wilkerson was still able to retreat back into the house. Then at approximately 2:50 p.m., Wilkerson fired a shot through the south side of the house. No law enforcement officers were hit by the round.

Negotiations continued. At 4:50 p.m., Wilkerson came out of the residence peacefully and was taken into custody. He was booked into the Meade County Jail on requested charges of aggravated assault and harassment by a telecommunication device.

Additional charges related to the barricade and shooting incident are expected.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), the Gray County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), and Meade County EMS also responded to help during the incident.

Charles life began on June 9, 1945, the son of Jim “Tom” and Norma Cleta (Carpenter) Kannady in Joplin, Missouri. He graduated from Valley Center High Class of 1964 and then attended Oklahoma State for 1 ½ years where he played football. He married Linda Gayle Fransham on August 27, 1967, at Valley Center United Methodist Church. He attended Wichita State University while working at Boeing. He finished up his college degree at Friends University in Wichita where he also played football.

Charles taught science and driver’s education in Florence, Marion and Goddard, Kansas. He was a farmer/rancher and a real estate broker. He attended Eastmoor United Methodist, was a member of Lions Club, National Board of Realtors and Marion Advancement Campaign. He enjoyed playing cards and billiards. Most of all he loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

His loving family includes his wife Linda of the home; sons and their wives Dirk and Tonya Kannady of Haysville, Kansas, Eric and Lindsay Kannady of Manhattan, Dax and Emily Kannady of Pilsen; brother Jimmy Kannady of Valley Center; sister Teresa Kannady of Benton, Kansas; three grandchildren, Rylie, Avery and Gage Kannady.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister Cynthia Kannady. Charles passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the age of 76 years old.

His family will gather at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion on Tuesday, July 20, from 5-7 p.m. His memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, 105 Eastmoor Drive, Marion.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal weekend shooting and have arrested a 16-year-old boy.

Just before 10p.m. on Saturday, police responded to a burglary in progress call at a home in the 2600 block of North Piatt inW Wichita, according to Officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

 Upon arrival, officers located a 16-year-old victim who had been shot.&nbsp; He was taken to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

While investigating the scene, a 16-year-old male suspect and a 20-year-old male suspect arrived at an area hospital with gunshot wounds.&nbsp; 

The 16-year-old was treated, released, and booked into jail. The 20-year-old male remains hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Davidson.

The investigation revealed the two suspects and victim are known to each other.&nbsp; The suspects arrived at the victim’s home, a disturbance ensued, and multiple shots were fired that struck all three individuals.&nbsp; Investigators have recovered two handguns during the investigation.

This was not a random incident, according to Davidson. He did not released names of the victim or the suspects.

Police will present the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspect after police executed a search warrant at a Kansas home.

On Friday, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit and the Shawnee County Drug Task Force served a search warrant in the 1600 Block of SW Central Park Avenue related to an ongoing investigation, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

While conducting the search warrant, the officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

As a result, officers arrested Shannon Hardesty, 45 years of age, and Kelcey Lowry, 28 years of age, both of Topeka. They were transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Hardesty was jailed on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine with the intent of distribution, Possession of drug paraphernalia with the intent of distribution and Aggravated endangering a child

He met Teresa Marie Gross Stepherson and they were united in marriage on April 4, 2010 in Savannah, Georgia. He was employed as an electrician/foreman at Footlocker in Junction City, Kansas. He enjoyed computers, developed and started an internet radio station called “Nighthawk Radio” which is now owned and operated by others.

He was preceded in death by his father Ronnie Mack Moncrief Sr. in 1996. Ronnie passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021 at the Geary Community Hospital in Junction City, Kansas.

His loving family includes his wife Teresa Stepherson of Herington; three children of the home, Sevana, Brianna, and Ronnie all of Herington; mother Martha Eleanor Taylor of Savannah, Georgia; and brothers Robert Moncrief and Ryan Moncrief (Melissa) all of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Reagan Moncrief (Shannon) of Savannah, Georgia.

Dona “Jane” was born on April 10, 1933, the daughter of Dwight Custer and Mable Pearl (Jones) Stevens in Satanta, Kansas. She graduated from Florence High Class of 1951 and married Earl Russell Mann on June 23, 1951, in the Florence United Methodist Church.

Jane was vice president of a jewelry company based in Chicago. She enjoyed designing jewelry for 25 years, including for the Miss Kansas and Miss America Pageants. For 28 years she held her realtor and real estate broker licenses. She was a member of Unity Church and the Association of Realtors and was listed in the Who’s Who for Women in Business directory. In her younger days she worked at the soda fountain at the drug store in Florence. She also rode horses and participated in parades, was a drum major and also a band majorette. She enjoyed dancing, playing the piano, crocheting, crossword puzzles, traveling, playing cards, sewing, selling real estate and jewelry. Most of all she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and would attend as many of their events as she could.

Her loving family includes her children Nedra (William) Olenick of Halstead, Doug (Vici) Mann, Darla Diamond, Don (Angel) Mann all of Wichita; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl in 2015; sister Esther Sinclair; brother Dewy Stevens; and her beloved dog, Mr. Angel. Jane passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at the age of 88 years old.

Her family will gather with friends on Thursday, July 22, from 5-7 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, 205 Elm Street, Marion, Kansas. Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 23, at 11:00 a.m. (early viewing at 10:00 a.m.) at Ridgepoint Church, 8000 W. 21st, Wichita, Kansas 67205.

On this date: In 1536, the English Parliament passed an act declaring the authority of the pope void in England.In 1863, during the Civil War, Union troops spearheaded by the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, made up of Black soldiers, charged Confederate-held Fort Wagner on Morris Island, S.C. The Confederates were able to repel the Northerners, who suffered heavy losses; the 54th's commander, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, was among those who were killed. SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; a second suspect in just over a week for allegedly using a GPS device to track a woman.

On July 13, the Wichita Police Department Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction Team (DIVRT)  worked to track down a suspect identified as 27-year-old Kanneth Battle of Wichita who had been stalking a victim and placing GPS trackers on her vehicle, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

On Monday, the DIVRT team served Battle with a Protection from Stalking order. Tuesday morning, he was seen on video placing a GPS tracker on a vehicle that the victim had access to.The DIVRT team worked with patrol to recover the GPS devices and locate Battle.&nbsp; He was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick county Adult Detention Facility on requested charges of stalking, two counts of tampering with an automobile, violation of a protection order and criminal use of weapons.<figure>

 </figure>On July 6, police arrested 57-year-old Ed Harrington of Wichita after&nbsp;a female victim reported that in May a suspect identified as Harrington – a person known to her –had placed a GPS tracking device on her vehicle, according to Wichita Police Officer Trevor Macy. She had taken it to a local automotive shop, where they were able to locate and remove it.&nbsp;After interviews, Harrington was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of Stalking, Burglary to Auto, Theft, and Violation of a protection order.&nbsp;If you or someone you know is involved in a domestic violence relationship, don't hesitate to reach out - police can connect you with resources to help.
