Today in History - Aug. 31

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a head-on crash.

Just after 4a.m. August 27, the Arkansas City Fire-EMS and Police departments were dispatched for a 2-vehicle injury accident in the 100 block of North Summit Street, according to a media release.&nbsp;

One of the drivers, a 74-year-old Arkansas City man, was injured.&nbsp; Arkansas City Fire-EMS transported him to South Central Kansas Medical Center.

Further investigation determined the other driver, 20-year-old Manuel Enriques, had crossed the center line and struck the victim’s vehicle head-on. Enriques was found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Police administered standardized field sobriety testing, which determined Enriques was suspected to be impaired, although alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor to the accident.

Officers later obtained a search warrant for a blood sample, which will be submitted to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for testing. Enriques was taken into custody without incident on requested charges of driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

He was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield.

Lillian K. Mathiesen, age 94, formerly of Belleville, Kansas, left this earthly life on Friday, August 6, 2021 at South Park East Nursing Home in Oklahoma City, OK. She was born on September 11, 1926 in Butte, Nebraska to Heinrich “Henry” and Katherina “Katherine” (Roth) Schroetlin. Her family moved to Sutton, NE, where she attended the Sutton schools. &nbsp;At the age of 16, Lillian worked at the ammunition depot in Hasting, NE. In 1950 she moved to Wichita, KS, where she worked at American Electric as a bookkeeper.&nbsp;

She married James “Jim” O. Stroh on June 21, 1952. They had two sons, David and Mark, and lived in Wichita for about ten years before moving to Belleville. Lillian worked at the Belleville Building and Loan and later she and Jim opened Jim’s OK Tire Store. Jim passed from a heart attack on April 30, 1973. Lillian continued to own and operate the tire store until she retired and sold the business. She later married Verdell A. Mathiesen on January 16, 1975 in Chester, NE. He preceded her in death on June 26, 2016. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Chester, NE.&nbsp;

Lillian is survived by her sons David (Alesia), Midwest City, OK, and Mark (Kathie), Ellinwood, KS; step-children Debra (Tom) Skucius, Cuba, KS, Denise Mathiesen, Concordia, KS, David (Brenda Shelton) Mathiesen, Berthoud, CO, and Doug Mathiesen, Overland Park, KS; 19 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; brother Benjamin “Ben” (Jackie) Schroetlin, Omaha, NE; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands James Stroh and Verdell Mathiesen; sisters Erma Franklin, Martha Haas and Esther Brown; brothers Herman Schroetlin, Ted Schroetlin, Bill Schroetlin, Reuben Schroetlin, Arthur Schroetlin and Edgar Schroetlin.&nbsp;

It was Lillian’s wishes to be cremated and the family will hold a celebration of her life on September 11, 2021 with burial of the cremains at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS. A Saline County resident sustained a $23,000 total loss when someone broke into his residence south of Salina earlier this month.

Jeremy Carnes, 40, told deputies that someone broke into his residence in the 400 block of E. Water Well Road sometime between Aug. 20 and Tuesday while he was in the Saline County Jail, Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. According to booking information, Carnes was booked into jail for failure to appear.

Carnes estimated that $3,500 worth of damage was done to his garage doors during the incident.

Soldan said that numerous items were taken, including the following.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ed Asner, the burly and prolific character actor who became a star in middle age as the gruff but lovable newsman Lou Grant, first in the hit comedy “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and later in the drama “Lou Grant,” died Sunday. He was 91.

Asner’s representative confirmed the actor’s death in an email to The Associated Press. Asner’s official&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/theonlyedasner/status/1432034864384000007?s=21" target="_blank">Twitter account included a note</a>&nbsp;from his children: “We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head- Goodnight dad. We love you.”

Built like the football lineman he once was, the balding Asner, a native of Kansas City, was a journeyman actor in films and TV when he was hired in 1970 to play Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” For seven seasons he was the rumpled boss to Moore’s ebullient Mary Richards (He called her “Mary,” she called him “Mr. Grant”) at the fictional Minneapolis TV newsroom where both worked. Later, he would play the role for five years on “Lou Grant.”

Asner’s character had caught on from the first episode of “Mary Tyler Moore,” when he told Mary in their initial meeting, “You’ve got spunk. ... I hate spunk!” The inspired cast included Ted Knight as Ted Baxter, the dimwitted news anchor; Gavin MacLeod as Murray Slaughter, the sarcastic news writer; and Betty White as the manipulative, sex-obsessed home show hostess Sue Ann Nivens. Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman, playing Mary’s neighbors, both saw their characters spun off into their own shows.

Asner is the third “Mary Tyler Moore” alum to die in recent months.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cloris-leachman-dead-7b9eb2aa8de5a62e8502ca94cff89e83">Leachman died in January</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gavin-macleod-entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-6313dfd801244eeeea2be2ddeac1cdbb">MacLeod died in May.</a>

The 99-year-old White is the lone surviving main cast member from “Mary Tyler Moore.”

“Mary Tyler Moore” was still a hit when the star decided to pursue other interests, and so it was brought to an end in the seventh season with a hilarious finale in which all of the principals were fired except for the bumbling Baxter.

Asner went immediately into “Lou Grant,” his character moving from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to become city editor of the Tribune, a crusading newspaper under the firm hand of Publisher Margaret Pynchon, memorably played by Nancy Marchand.

Asner won three best supporting actor Emmys on “Mary Tyler Moore” and two best actor awards on “Lou Grant.” He also won Emmys for his roles in the miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man” (1975-1976) and “Roots” (1976-1977).

He had more than 300 acting credits and remained active throughout his 70s and 80s in a variety of film and TV roles. In 2003, he played Santa Claus in Will Ferrell’s hit film “Elf.” He was John Goodman’s father in the short-lived 2004 CBS comedy “Center of the Universe” and the voice of the elderly hero in the hit 2009 Pixar release, “Up.” More recently, he was in such TV series as “Forgive Me” and “Dead to Me.”

Nonetheless, Asner told The Associated Press in 2009 that interesting roles were hard to come by.

“I never get enough work,” he said. “It’s the history of my career. There just isn’t anything to turn down, let me put it that way.”

“I’d say most people are probably in that same boat, old people, and it’s a shame,” he said.

As Screen Actors Guild president, the liberal Asner was caught up in a political controversy in 1982 when he spoke out against U.S. involvement with repressive governments in Latin America. “Lou Grant” was canceled during the furor that followed and he did not run for a third SAG term in 1985.

Asner discussed his politicization in a 2002 interview, noting he had begun his career during the McCarthy era and for years had been afraid to speak out for fear of being blacklisted.

Then he saw a nun’s film depicting the cruelties inflicted by El Salvador’s government on that country’s citizens.

“I stepped out to complain about our country’s constant arming and fortifying of the military in El Salvador, who were oppressing their people,” he said.

Former SAG President Charlton Heston and others accused him of making un-American statements and of misusing his position as head of their actors union.

“We even had bomb threats at the time. I had armed guards,” Asner recalled.

The actor blamed the controversy for ending the five-year run of “Lou Grant,” although CBS insisted declining ratings were the reason the show was canceled.

Although the show had its light moments, its scripts touched on a variety of darker social issues that most series wouldn’t touch at the time, including alcoholism and homelessness. Asner remained politically active for the rest of his life and in 2017 published the book “The Grouchy Historian: An Old-Time Lefty Defends Our Constitution Against Right-Wing Hypocrites and Nutjobs.”

Asner, born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1929, almost became a newsman in real life. He studied journalism at the University of Chicago until a professor told him there was little money to be made in the profession.

He quickly switched to drama, debuting as the martyred Thomas Becket in a campus production of T.S. Eliot’s “Murder in the Cathedral.”

He eventually dropped out of school, going to work as a taxi driver and other jobs before being drafted in 1951. He served with the Army Signal Corps in France.

Returning to Chicago after military service, he appeared at the Playwrights Theatre Club and Second City, the famed satire troupe that launched the careers of dozens of top comedians.

Later, in New York, he joined the long-running “The Threepenny Opera” and appeared opposite Jack Lemmon in “Face of a Hero.”

Arriving in Hollywood in 1961 for an episode of television’s “Naked City,” Asner decided to stay and appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, including the film “El Dorado,” opposite John Wayne; and the Elvis Presley vehicles “Kid Galahad” and “Change of Habit.” He was a regular in the 1960s political drama series “Slattery’s People.”

He was married twice, to Nancy Lou Sykes and Cindy Gilmore, and had four children, Matthew, Liza, Kate and Charles.

Actor Ed Asner, TV's blustery Lou Grant, dies at 91

Mabelle Mase enjoys being with and helping others. Throughout her life, it is a safe bet that she's done a lot of both.

Today Mase, of Salina, celebrates her 103 birthday!

While she has seen a lot through the years, it is the people she has encountered for whom she has the fondest memories.

Mase was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Centralia, Kan., the fourth of six children.

"We lived on a farm and my favorite animal has always been the horses. We rode horses a lot. I think they put me on a horse when I was about 18 months old," she said.

Growing up, Mase also enjoyed school. It was a passion that would shape much of her adult life.

"School was it!" she said and smiled. "I was eager for it every day, partly for the kids, but probably mostly for what was in the books."

After graduating from high school in Centralia, Mase went to Kansas State University, where she earned a teaching degree. Mase said she originally had planned to teach home economics, but she switched to elementary education.

While she was at K-State, her family moved to Ottawa County, so Mase found herself beginning her teaching career at a school just outside of Minneapolis, where she taught for two years before getting married. She later taught third grade in the Minneapolis district for 17 years.

Mase then decided to pursue a master's degree in special education from the University of Kansas. After completing that degree, she then taught at Hawthorne Elementary School in Salina "for a good long while."

Throughout her teaching career, Mase found delight in her students.

"I loved teaching and I loved the children. I enjoyed each one of them," she said.

While she liked to travel and visited Europe, Canada, and Mexico, being home was what Mase has enjoyed the most.

"I loved activities with the local ladies, like bridge and various other activities," she said. "That is what I really enjoyed, the activities with the other ladies and the neighbors."

Mase also has accomplished many hours of volunteer work to help others. One of Mase's volunteer efforts was with 4-H.

"I was a 4-H club leader for a short time, but mostly I saw to it that my girls had a good 4-H background," she said.

She also was active in delivering Meals on Wheels.

Another of Mase's life adventures was as a house mother for the Pi Phi house at the University of New Mexico.

"I loved being a house mother," she said.

Basically, Mase enjoys people and helping others.

While she plans to spend today with loved ones, the celebration will continue into Monday as Salina Presbyterian Manor, where she lives, has planned a celebration in her honor.

So what advice does this woman who has made 103 trips around the sun have for those younger than her?

"Live each day as it comes and work with its problems and its pleasures, but mostly to enjoy life along the way," she said.

For 103-year-old Mabelle Mase, it's about the people

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Tenant advocates and court officials are gearing up for what some fear will be a wave of evictions and others predict will be just a growing trickle after a U.S. Supreme Court action allowing lockouts to resume.

The high court’s conservative majority late Thursday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-courts-pandemics-coronavirus-pandemic-us-supreme-court-dcd2da5f88b0396c05d85c00591755f9">blocked the Biden administration</a>&nbsp;from enforcing a temporary ban placed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The action ends protections for about 3.5 million people in the United States who say they faced eviction in the next two months, according to U.S. Census Bureau data from early August.

“We are incredibly disappointed in the Supreme Court ruling and ask Congress and Governor (Doug) Ducey to take action to prevent what will likely be tragic outcomes for thousands of Arizona families,” said Cynthia Zwick, executive director of the nonprofit organization Wildfire that is helping distribute government rental assistance in Arizona.

“Lives are literally at risk as the pandemic continues to surge and families lose their homes, especially during this time of extreme heat,” she said, referring to Phoenix’s triple-digit temperatures.

Wildfire is encouraging tenants to keep applying for rental aid and “work with their landlords to develop plans for making payments until the assistance is available,” she said.

Ron Book, chairman of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, worries about the thousands of older people who potentially could be affected by about 9,000 pending eviction cases in the county.

Book said he’s been trying to find people at risk new places to live, but many haven’t taken the situation seriously because the moratorium has been extended numerous times.

But some local officials around the U.S. say the court’s action is unlikely to set off the flood of evictions some advocates predict.

Scott Davis, spokesman for the Maricopa County Justice Courts that handle the bulk of Arizona’s evictions, said he does not expect anything dramatic overnight. He said how things play out will depend on how landlords and their attorneys decide to handle cases.

“We know that eviction case filings over the last 17 months are down about 50% from pre-pandemic,” Davis said. “ Some believe there will be a large flood of case activity; others believe it will be just a light sprinkle, which builds gradually over time. Again — it’s up to landlords.”

Davis emphasized no one can be evicted immediately without due process, and the cases could take weeks to be carried out in the courts.

The Apartment Association of Southeastern Wisconsin said Friday that landlords rarely evict anyone who is only a few hundred dollars behind on rent. It said the average eviction judgment for unpaid rent in Wisconsin is more than $2,600.

“Contrary to dire predictions by tenant advocates, there will NOT be a ‘tsunami’ of eviction filings in Wisconsin or in most parts of the country,” the landlord trade association said. “There will NOT be 11 million people suddenly made homeless.”

The court’s action does not affect the temporary bans on evictions placed by a handful of states, including California.

The Treasury Department and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge on Friday sent a letter to all governors, mayors and county officials, urging them to implement their own eviction bans, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said.

“Seven states have taken the steps. More states can take the steps,” Psaki said.

She noted that quicker disbursement of rental assistance money could also help stave off evictions.

In Detroit, Ted Phillips, executive director of the United Community Housing Coalition, said the court’s action could prompt more eviction cases.

“We suspect ..., there’s probably a large number of cases where landlords never bothered applying for an order of eviction because, well, why bother if there’s a moratorium,” Phillips said.

The court’s move wasn’t a huge surprise. The justices had allowed an earlier pause on lockouts to continue through July, but they hinted in late June they would take this path if asked again to intervene. The moratorium had been scheduled to expire Oct. 3.

The court said in an unsigned opinion that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which reimposed the moratorium Aug. 3, lacked the authority to do so under federal law without explicit congressional authorization. The three liberal justices dissented.

Congress is on recess for a few weeks and is unlikely take immediate action on legislation.

But key progressive lawmakers Friday urged House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, both Democrats, to consider passing legislation to extend the moratorium during the pandemic.

One option would be to include an evictions measure in the upcoming budget infrastructure packages that Congress will consider when lawmakers return in September.

“The impending eviction crisis is a matter of public health and safety that demands an urgent legislative solution to prevent further harm and needless loss of human life,” read the letter from Reps. Ayanna Pressley, D-Massachusetts, Cori Bush, D-Missouri, Jimmy Gomez, D-California, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York. It was signed by 60 lawmakers.

Pelosi said Friday the House “is assessing possible legislative remedies.”

Congress has approved more than $46.5 billion in rental assistance, but so far state and local governments have distributed 11% of that money, just over $5 billion, the Treasury Department said Wednesday.

In Kansas, the state’s Housing Resources Corporation is pushing to process hundreds of rental relief applications after hiring and training more than 100 new employees to help. Still, most assistance money hasn’t been distributed.

Landlord organizations blamed the slow rollout on requirements imposed by Congress that many applicants find cumbersome.

Courtney Gilstrap LeVinus, president and CEO of the Arizona Multihousing Association, said many mom-and-pop rental owners are teetering on bankruptcy, with about $500 million in rent unpaid statewide.

“Despite such intense financial pressure, Arizona property owners have worked with residents to keep them in their homes, to keep them safe from the pandemic, and to help them qualify for eviction relief that has been slow to arrive for a year and a half,” LeVinus said. “We have strongly encouraged our members to keep working with residents to avoid evictions in every possible instance.”

Eviction ban's end will allow pandemic lockouts to resume

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal hit and run crash have made an arrest.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a fatal accident at the intersection of 47th Street South and South Hydraulic Avenue, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

The investigation revealed a black SUV was&nbsp; eastbound on 47th Street South. The SUV then turned north onto Hydraulic Avenue and struck a westbound 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by&nbsp;37-year-old Kenneth M. Ballinger of Derby.

EMS pronounced Ballinger dead at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the black SUV later identified as 31-year-old Jesus Manuel Olave, Jr., fled the scene.&nbsp; According to Sedgwick County booking records, police arrested and <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18705970">booked him into</a> jail Thursday evening&nbsp; on requested charges of Operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, Failure to stop at an accident that resulted in death, Failure to yield to approaching vehicle when turning left,&nbsp;

He died from his injuries. The driver of the black SUV fled the scene. Police have not located the driver.&nbsp; The SUV may have damage to the front right corner.

Kansas man accused of fatal hit-and -run crash

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged lewd behavior.

On Thursday, Domestic Violence/Sex Crimes detectives were following up on a report of a 63-year-old man identified as Richard Hearn exposing himself and conducting lewd activities near patrons of a business in the area of Harry and Webb in Wichita on July 30.

 The Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction Team (DIVRT) arrested Hearn. Their investigation also revealed an additional crime of a sexual nature that had previously occurred.

Hearn was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on requested charges of Lewd and Lascivious Behavior, Trespassing and Window Peeping.

Police: Kan. man accused of window peeping, lewd behavior

Duane’s life began on April 8, 1935, the son of William C. and Thelma (Glenn) Biehler in Delavan, Kansas. He graduated from Herington High School Class of 1953. 

He started out as a brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad. He farmed, and had chemical training with the military. He then worked for the Corps of Engineers at Milford Lake and Fort Riley. He was an entomologist and pest control manager for 20 years at Fort Riley until retirement in 2003. 

Duane loved traveling, camping, fishing for large mouth black bass, hunting and he also enjoyed dancing. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse Mary Ann Biehler; life partner Mary Ann Brown; brother Gerald Biehler; sisters Marilyn Anderson and Joyce Trent.

Duane William Biehler passed away, Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the age of 86 years old. His loving family includes his sons and their wives Tim and Karen Biehler, Steve and Cindy Jo Biehler all of Herington, Brad and Beth Biehler of Towanda, Kansas, Chris and Rhonda Biehler of McPherson, Kansas, Ron and Glenna Biehler of Erie, Colorado; life partner Mary Ann Brown’s children Bobbie Ann and Kyle Korgal; sister Margaret Dillon of Abilene, Kansas; brother-in-law Daniel Trent of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; six&nbsp; step-grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. His family will greet friends at St. John’s Catholic Church on Friday, September 3 from 5-7 p.m. Rosary will be held Saturday, September 4 at 10:15 a.m. and Mass at 11:00, both at St. John’s Catholic Church with interment to follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

He graduated from Herington High School Class of 1953. He started out as a brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad. He farmed, and had chemical training with the military. He then worked for the Corps of Engineers at Milford Lake and Fort Riley. He was an entomologist and pest control manager for 20 years at Fort Riley until retirement in 2003. Duane loved traveling, camping, fishing for large mouth black bass, hunting and he also enjoyed dancing. He was preceded in death by his parents; spouse Mary Ann Biehler; life partner Mary Ann Brown; brother Gerald Biehler; sisters Marilyn Anderson and Joyce Trent. Duane William Biehler passed away, Saturday, August 21, 2021 at the age of 86 years old. His loving family includes his sons and their wives Tim and Karen Biehler, Steve and Cindy Jo Biehler all of Herington, Brad and Beth Biehler of Towanda, Kansas, Chris and Rhonda Biehler of McPherson, Kansas, Ron and Glenna Biehler of Erie, Colorado; life partner Mary Ann Brown’s children Bobbie Ann and Kyle Korgal; sister Margaret Dillon of Abilene, Kansas; brother-in-law Daniel Trent of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; six&nbsp; step-grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. His family will greet friends at St. John’s Catholic Church on Friday, September 3 from 5-7 p.m. Rosary will be held Saturday, September 4 at 10:15 a.m. and Mass at 11:00, both at St. John’s Catholic Church with interment to follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
