Today in History - Nov. 21

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A former Wichita high school teacher has pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a child. Forty-nine-year-old Shawn Wingfield entered his plea on Wednesday. 

Wingfield resigned in July from teaching gifted English and debate at Wichita Northwest High School. 

The investigation began after a woman Wingfield dated turned over what she considered worrisome text messages to police. A court affidavit said Winfield admitted to being sexually attracted to 11- to 14-year-old children. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 11.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man for alleged child sex crimes.

In June, police in Wichita were alerted to a concerning text messages sent by 48-year-old Shawn Wingfield, according to Officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp;

USD 259 listed Wingfield as a gifted-6 teacher at Wichita Northwest High School. His linkdin profile said he also was involved with debate and forensics.

Further investigation into the text messages led police to arrest Wingfield on Saturday and he was booked&nbsp; into the Sedgwick County Jail <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=305200">on requested</a> charges of sexual exploitation of a child.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Wingfield wrote on social media," This morning, for reasons involving personal health and well being, I resigned from Wichita Public Schools. Without going into details, I have come to believe that this is not only the best decision for myself, but also for the district and my students. And while I do regret the timing of this decision so close to the start of the new school year, I believe that to stay any longer would prove to be a greater inconvenience to everyone in the end."

On Saturday Wingfield&nbsp; wrote on social media, "Time for me to check out for a while.  A little earlier than I had hoped.  See everyone, I hope, on the other side."

The case against Wingfield was presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. He remains jailed on a $50,000 bond, according to online court records and was expected in court on Monday afternoon, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Former date turned Kan. teacher in for child porn charges

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a business burglary and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a report of a burglary at 123 SE 10th Avenue in Topeka, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

The caller advised they saw a subject throw bricks through the front windows. Officers arrived to find the front window to Stephanie’s Salon broken and appeared the business had been burglarized. 

No one was located inside the business. It was determined that several items had been taken by a suspect.

Detectives later received information of potential subjects attempting to sell items taken from the business burglary. Detectives followed up on the information which led them to 1500 SW Van Buren, APT #3. Detectives took two individuals into custody and transported them to Law Enforcement Center.

Officers secured the apartment for the application of search warrant. At the conclusion of the investigation, police arrested James Timmerman, 35 of Topeka, and booked him on requested charges of Burglary, Theft, Criminal Damage, and Possession of Marijuana. They booked Angela Bechstein, 40 of Topeka, on requested charges of Burglary, Theft and Criminal Damage to property.

Kan. felon jailed for burglary after police find stolen items for sale

It was Barbara’s wishes to be cremated and a memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, Nov. 26, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home with Rev. David Strommen officiating. Burial of the cremains will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Concordia. Friends may sign the register book on Wed., November 24, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., all at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Today in History - Nov. 19

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged assault on officers in Topeka.

Just before 10p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the area of SE 25th and SE Indiana Street in Topeka in reference a subject walking in the middle of the street with a stick and attempting to strike vehicles traveling by him, according to Police Lt. Manuel Munoz.

While the officers were searching the area, dispatched received a call that the subject was in the back yard of 2401 SE Indiana. Officers made contact with the subject who walked away and refused to stop. The subject was armed with a stick in one hand and an axe in the other.

The subject later identified as 44-year-old Edward Thurman began swinging the axe in the air and began to walk towards the officers. As other officers began to arrive to assist, the Thurman threw the stick at one of the officers who was getting out of his patrol car; the stick missed the officer. Police eventually took Thurman into custody after less than lethal ammunitions were used.

EMS transported Thurman to a local hospital to be medically cleared. Once cleared, he was transported to Shawnee County Department of Corrections and booked on requested charges of Aggravated Assault on a law enforcement officer, Interference and Pedestrian on Roadway. No officers were injured, according to Munoz.

Police: Kansas man threatened officers with an axe

Donald Rex Clothier, 91, passed away on November 16, 2021 at Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas. Rex was born on March 26, 1930 on a farm north of Sylvia, Kansas to Perry and Connie (Book) Clothier. 

He attended grade school in Stafford, attended and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1948. He attended Hutchinson Community College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951.

Rex attended basic training in Wichita Falls, Texas and was stationed at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisiana working on B-29 bombers that flew bombing missions from Korea to Okinawa. He was later stationed in Okinawa with the 307th Bomber Wing to work on aircraft that flew missions over Korea. He was also stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, Greenland and Saudi Arabia, returning to Lake Charles Air Force Base in 1955, where he was honorably discharged. In July 1955 he entered the Kansas Highway Patrol school on the University of Kansas Campus in Lawrence. Rex met Pat Lang while working as the driver’s license examiner for Sedgwick County and Pat was working for the Internal Revenue Service. They were united in marriage on January 12, 1957 at First United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. They were married for 38 years and raised four children. Rex served on the patrol in Marion, Salina, Lyons, and Dodge City where he was promoted to sergeant overseeing ten troopers. He retired in 1980 from the patrol but continued to work. Rex worked for Farmland Insurance Company, was a rural mail carrier in Dodge City and drove a school bus for Marion Unified School District. He spent many happy hours riding a lawn mower with his son, Greg. His wife Pat preceded him in death in 1995. Also preceding him were his parents, his brother James, and his sister Jearnnette.

He is survived by his four children: Belinda Amend and her husband, Doug, Hesston, Kansas; Brad Clothier and his wife, Karen, Scottsdale, Arizona; Lori Wilhelm and her husband, Richard, Lubbock, Texas; Greg Clothier and his wife, Denise, Wichita, Kansas; his ten grandchildren: Amanda Harrison, and her husband, Cory, Moundridge, Kansas; Derrick Amend and his fiancé, Sydney, Wichita, Kansas; Sara Amend and her fiancé, Preston, Wichita, Kansas; Ashley Stevenson and her husband, Tyler, Wichita, Kansas; Tyler Kirby and her husband, Chris, Wichita, Kansas; Abby Clothier, Wichita, Kansas; Chelsea Boatright and her husband, Clay, Aurora, Colorado; Amber Wilhelm, San Antonio, Texas; Brian Wilhelm and his wife Jade, Lubbock, Texas; Cody Wilhelm, Lubbock, Texas. He also has eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Services will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Marion Christian Church with Carl Helm officiating. Yazel-Megli Funeral Home is serving the family.

Rex was born on March 26, 1930 on a farm north of Sylvia, Kansas to Perry and Connie (Book) Clothier. He attended grade school in Stafford, attended and graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1948. He attended Hutchinson Community College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951.Rex attended basic training in Wichita Falls, Texas and was stationed at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisiana working on B-29 bombers that flew bombing missions from Korea to Okinawa. He was later stationed in Okinawa with the 307th Bomber Wing to work on aircraft that flew missions over Korea. He was also stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, Greenland and Saudi Arabia, returning to Lake Charles Air Force Base in 1955, where he was honorably discharged. In July 1955 he entered the Kansas Highway Patrol school on the University of Kansas Campus in Lawrence. Rex met Pat Lang while working as the driver’s license examiner for Sedgwick County and Pat was working for the Internal Revenue Service. They were united in marriage on January 12, 1957 at First United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. They were married for 38 years and raised four children. Rex served on the patrol in Marion, Salina, Lyons, and Dodge City where he was promoted to sergeant overseeing ten troopers. He retired in 1980 from the patrol but continued to work. Rex worked for Farmland Insurance Company, was a rural mail carrier in Dodge City and drove a school bus for Marion Unified School District. He spent many happy hours riding a lawn mower with his son, Greg. His wife Pat preceded him in death in 1995. Also preceding him were his parents, his brother James, and his sister Jearnnette. He is survived by his four children: Belinda Amend and her husband, Doug, Hesston, Kansas; Brad Clothier and his wife, Karen, Scottsdale, Arizona; Lori Wilhelm and her husband, Richard, Lubbock, Texas; Greg Clothier and his wife, Denise, Wichita, Kansas; his ten grandchildren: Amanda Harrison, and her husband, Cory, Moundridge, Kansas; Derrick Amend and his fiancé, Sydney, Wichita, Kansas; Sara Amend and her fiancé, Preston, Wichita, Kansas; Ashley Stevenson and her husband, Tyler, Wichita, Kansas; Tyler Kirby and her husband, Chris, Wichita, Kansas; Abby Clothier, Wichita, Kansas; Chelsea Boatright and her husband, Clay, Aurora, Colorado; Amber Wilhelm, San Antonio, Texas; Brian Wilhelm and his wife Jade, Lubbock, Texas; Cody Wilhelm, Lubbock, Texas. Donald Rex Clothier

Albert’s life began on October 27, 1930, the son of David and Anna (Wyse) Ward in Potwin, Kansas. 

He graduated from Potwin High Class of 1949 and served his country in the US Air Force from 1949-1956. 

He married Marianne Boller on October 25, 1959 in Farmington, New Mexico.

Albert was a machinist and tool inspector at Boeing. He enjoyed his family, camping, fishing, reading, traveling and golf.

His loving family includes his daughters Suzanne Ward of Whitewater, Kay and her husband, Duane Keefover of Wichita; brother Otis Ward of Dixon, Illinois; sister Helen Schumacher of Bourbon, Missouri; grandchildren Ryan Keefover (Katie), Ashley Keefover, Todd Keefover (Dessire); great-grandchildren Judah and Aurrow.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marianne in 2013; brothers David and Bob Ward and a sister, Dorothy Neil.

Albert passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at the age of 91 years old. A private family service will be held.

He married Marianne Boller on October 25, 1959 in Farmington, New Mexico.Albert was a machinist and tool inspector at Boeing. He enjoyed his family, camping, fishing, reading, traveling and golf.His loving family includes his daughters Suzanne Ward of Whitewater, Kay and her husband, Duane Keefover of Wichita; brother Otis Ward of Dixon, Illinois; sister Helen Schumacher of Bourbon, Missouri; grandchildren Ryan Keefover (Katie), Ashley Keefover, Todd Keefover (Dessire); great-grandchildren Judah and Aurrow.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Marianne in 2013; brothers David and Bob Ward and a sister, Dorothy Neil.Albert passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at the age of 91 years old. As a boy, Leon Mills spent hours riding his horse, Bob, up and down wooded hills and ravines in hot pursuit of outlaws and bandits. Years later, as a consulting veterinarian for feedlots, he spent hours driving through western Kansas and the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. His independent spirit and love of the country never changed. Leon was born to Joe and Cordelia (Anderson) Mills on May 10, 1940 in Abilene, Kansas. He and his older sisters Joanna and Kitty grew up on the family farm that bordered nearby Enterprise. He enjoyed helping raise crops and livestock—but not chickens—and went to school in Enterprise and Chapman, graduating from Dickinson County Community High School in 1958. In high school, he was active in 4-H and FFA, but music mattered most and he became an accomplished trombonist. Lucky for him, his sister Kitty was a talented pianist and they spent hours playing popular songs together. As a junior, not only was he deemed worthy to play in the Abilene Municipal Band, he marched with them down Pennsylvania Avenue, leading President Eisenhower’s second inaugural parade. That summer at the county fair, Pat Dawe and her hot pink shorts caught his attention and they began dating their senior year at rival high schools. As graduation neared, Leon and his mother went through Kansas State University’s college catalog, looking at majors. They started at A, but nothing clicked until they got to V, veterinary medicine. Leon and Pat continued dating at K-State, where he joined Delta Tau Delta and played in the symphony orchestra. They married three years later on July 9, 1961 and by 1964, when Leon earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine, Pat had graduated and their son Mark was born. Leon worked in mixed animal practices, for a pharmaceutical research company, and served two years as a U.S. Army captain and a post veterinarian at Ft. Riley. While there, he shared caring for Chief, the last U.S. Army combat cavalry charger and already 35 years old. Later, Dad laughed that no veterinarian wanted to be on duty if Chief so much as coughed. But the true highlights of those years were the births of son Scott and daughter Cindy. When his sister Joanna’s husband, Joe Clemence, offered him a position at his feedlot outside of Herington, Kansas, the family of five moved and settled for good. Leon also bought a local mixed animal practice and Pat managed the books while their dachshunds, Muffin and Shadrach, patrolled the waiting room. In 1980, Leon took a leap, sold his practice, and joined the feedlot consulting firm of Jim Sheldon and Associates. He’d found his niche and later became an independent consultant. Clients appreciated his integrity and the results he produced, pharmaceutical companies sought out his expertise, and his children learned not to ask, “What’s in the cooler?”—the answer was probably “brain tissue for the lab.” He took joy in his children’s joy, never missed a concert, game, or performance, and spent countless weekends at parades and rodeos as a Herington High Striders dad. As his children married and had children, he threw them just as far in the swimming pool as he had their parents and he loved on them just as hard, too. Retirement wasn’t easy, but K-State sports and cruises with friends helped until his battle with Parkinson’s disease began. The relentless loss of mobility and declining health frustrated him greatly. Even so, hospital nurses and caregivers appreciated his wit and how hard he tried to keep a brave face. On November 14, 2021, he died quietly at home, in his sleep.

His parents and brother-in-law, Bruce Dalton, passed before him. 

His survivors already miss him greatly: his wife of 60 years, Pat, of Herington, his children Mark Mills (Claudia) of Prairie Village, Kansas, Scott Mills of Shawnee, Kansas, Cindy Herbel (Jerry) of Mesa, Arizona, grandchildren Haley, Seth, Kelsey, Caroline, Olivia, Carly, Louisa, sisters Joanna Clemence (Joe) of Abilene, Kansas, Kitty Dalton of Salina, Kansas and several nieces, nephews and their families.

His family will gather with friends on Saturday, November 20, at 9:30 a.m. for the internment of ashes at Mount Hope Cemetery (1005 S. Lincoln Street, Enterprise) and again at 11:00 a.m. for a memorial service at St. Paul Lutheran Church (114 N 8th Street, Herington). A lunch and fellowship will immediately follow the service at St. Paul Parish Hall. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Parkinson’s Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

He and his older sisters Joanna and Kitty grew up on the family farm that bordered nearby Enterprise. He enjoyed helping raise crops and livestock—but not chickens—and went to school in Enterprise and Chapman, graduating from Dickinson County Community High School in 1958. In high school, he was active in 4-H and FFA, but music mattered most and he became an accomplished trombonist. Lucky for him, his sister Kitty was a talented pianist and they spent hours playing popular songs together. As a junior, not only was he deemed worthy to play in the Abilene Municipal Band, he marched with them down Pennsylvania Avenue, leading President Eisenhower’s second inaugural parade. That summer at the county fair, Pat Dawe and her hot pink shorts caught his attention and they began dating their senior year at rival high schools. As graduation neared, Leon and his mother went through Kansas State University’s college catalog, looking at majors. They started at A, but nothing clicked until they got to V, veterinary medicine. Leon and Pat continued dating at K-State, where he joined Delta Tau Delta and played in the symphony orchestra. They married three years later on July 9, 1961 and by 1964, when Leon earned his doctorate in veterinary medicine, Pat had graduated and their son Mark was born. Leon worked in mixed animal practices, for a pharmaceutical research company, and served two years as a U.S. Army captain and a post veterinarian at Ft. Riley. While there, he shared caring for Chief, the last U.S. Army combat cavalry charger and already 35 years old. Later, Dad laughed that no veterinarian wanted to be on duty if Chief so much as coughed. But the true highlights of those years were the births of son Scott and daughter Cindy. When his sister Joanna’s husband, Joe Clemence, offered him a position at his feedlot outside of Herington, Kansas, the family of five moved and settled for good. Leon also bought a local mixed animal practice and Pat managed the books while their dachshunds, Muffin and Shadrach, patrolled the waiting room. In 1980, Leon took a leap, sold his practice, and joined the feedlot consulting firm of Jim Sheldon and Associates. He’d found his niche and later became an independent consultant. Clients appreciated his integrity and the results he produced, pharmaceutical companies sought out his expertise, and his children learned not to ask, “What’s in the cooler?”—the answer was probably “brain tissue for the lab.” He took joy in his children’s joy, never missed a concert, game, or performance, and spent countless weekends at parades and rodeos as a Herington High Striders dad. As his children married and had children, he threw them just as far in the swimming pool as he had their parents and he loved on them just as hard, too. Retirement wasn’t easy, but K-State sports and cruises with friends helped until his battle with Parkinson’s disease began. The relentless loss of mobility and declining health frustrated him greatly. Even so, hospital nurses and caregivers appreciated his wit and how hard he tried to keep a brave face. On November 14, 2021, he died quietly at home, in his sleep. His parents and brother-in-law, Bruce Dalton, passed before him. Kent V. Merrifield of Herington was born on June 6, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas to Glen and Iris (Surtees) Merrifield. 

He graduated from Wichita South High School in 1965.

 He served his country as a radio repairman, carpentry specialist and a structural concrete worker in the Air Force from 1968-1971. He served in the Army as a tank mechanic and painter from 1971-1987 and then the Army National Guard from 1987-2007. 

He married Sandra Jean MacDonald on March 4, 1999 in Herington, Kansas.

He enjoyed woodworking, landscaping his yard and keeping his yard looking immaculate throughout the year. His loving family includes his wife Sandra of the home; son Shane MacDonald of Hillsboro, Kansas; daughter Shonna Llamas (Mario) of Newton, Kansas; brothers Mike Merrifield (Maryn) and Steve Merrifield, and a sister, Ann Johnson, all of Wichita, Kansas; and a granddaughter, Sadie MacDonald. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kent passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the age of 74 years old. The family will greet friends on Monday, November 24 from 10-11 a.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herrington. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. with military honors at Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, Kansas.

Merrifield of Herington was born on June 6, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas to Glen and Iris (Surtees) Merrifield. He graduated from Wichita South High School in 1965. He served his country as a radio repairman, carpentry specialist and a structural concrete worker in the Air Force from 1968-1971. He served in the Army as a tank mechanic and painter from 1971-1987 and then the Army National Guard from 1987-2007. He married Sandra Jean MacDonald on March 4, 1999 in Herington, Kansas. He enjoyed woodworking, landscaping his yard and keeping his yard looking immaculate throughout the year. His loving family includes his wife Sandra of the home; son Shane MacDonald of Hillsboro, Kansas; daughter Shonna Llamas (Mario) of Newton, Kansas; brothers Mike Merrifield (Maryn) and Steve Merrifield, and a sister, Ann Johnson, all of Wichita, Kansas; and a granddaughter, Sadie MacDonald. He was preceded in death by his parents. Kent passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the age of 74 years old. The family will greet friends on Monday, November 24 from 10-11 a.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herrington. Kansas state Rep. Aaron Coleman could face a second complaint from his fellow Democratic lawmakers following his <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2021-10-31/kansas-rep-aaron-coleman-arrested-on-domestic-violence-charge" target="_blank">arrest last month</a> for an alleged domestic battery. And it appears less likely he’d emerge with a simple reprimand like he did last time.

Coleman,
 from Kansas City, Kansas, was the subject of a legislative complaint 
earlier this year based on allegations that he abused and threatened 
women before taking office. An investigative committee ultimately 
dismissed the charge and issued an informal letter of reprimand.

Coleman
 has a history of allegations of abuse and harassment. The 21-year-old 
narrowly defeated an incumbent in last year’s election. That prompted 
calls to remove him when the allegations came to light. He was also <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-lifestyle-legislature-kansas-city-kansas-263a71a057314255fdf024b3acb34782" target="_blank">recently banned</a> from a state Department of Labor facility.

Democrats on the committee earlier this year initially wanted harsher
 punishment — like a formal censure or expulsion from the Legislature.

“There
 has to be something done, because otherwise this is a slap in the face 
to all those people who are his victims,” Democratic Rep. Cindy Neighbor
 said at the January hearing.

But those efforts couldn’t advance 
because Republicans didn’t want to take more severe action over fear of 
setting a precedent. They said there was no previous instance of a 
lawmaker facing discipline for actions before they took office.

“I
 don’t want to set a precedent that has never been done before in Kansas
 history,” Republican Rep. John Barker said when opposing any formal 
action against Coleman.

If lawmakers file a new complaint against 
Coleman, committee members wouldn’t have the same concerns about setting
 a new precedent. In this case, Coleman would face discipline for 
actions he took while he was a sitting lawmaker.

Few details have so far been released on Coleman’s arrest last month, but <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2021-11-01/kansas-state-rep-aaron-coleman-of-kansas-city-kansas-pleads-not-guilty-to-domestic-violence-charge" target="_blank">court documents</a>
 appear to show the battery charge stems from an alleged altercation 
with a family member. It appears that the family member may be Coleman’s
 brother.

A group of women Democratic legislators say they will 
file a new complaint seeking expulsion if Coleman doesn't step down 
following the battery charge.

“We are alarmed that an individual 
remains in a position of power after continued documented accounts of 
violence,” the lawmakers said in a statement. “The message must be sent 
that violence and dangerous conduct won’t be tolerated.”

One of 
those lawmakers, Democratic Rep. Jo Ella Hoye, said the women had not 
set a deadline for Coleman to resign or face a new complaint.

If a
 new complaint is filed, a committee would be created to investigate. 
That panel would then decide whether to dismiss the complaint or 
recommend some disciplinary action to the full House, which could 
admonish him or kick him out of the Legislature.

With the 2022 
session slated to start Jan. 10, it’s unlikely a special investigative 
committee would be formed and consider a complaint before the next 
session starts.

Coleman did not respond to requests for comment.

Aaron Coleman could face a second complaint from his fellow Democratic lawmakers following his <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2021-10-31/kansas-rep-aaron-coleman-arrested-on-domestic-violence-charge" target="_blank">arrest last month</a> for an alleged domestic battery. And it appears less likely he’d emerge with a simple reprimand like he did last time.Coleman,
 from Kansas City, Kansas, was the subject of a legislative complaint 
earlier this year based on allegations that he abused and threatened 
women before taking office. An investigative committee ultimately 
dismissed the charge and issued an informal letter of reprimand.Coleman
 has a history of allegations of abuse and harassment. The 21-year-old 
narrowly defeated an incumbent in last year’s election. That prompted 
calls to remove him when the allegations came to light. He was also <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-lifestyle-legislature-kansas-city-kansas-263a71a057314255fdf024b3acb34782" target="_blank">recently banned</a> from a state Department of Labor facility.Democrats on the committee earlier this year initially wanted harsher
 punishment — like a formal censure or expulsion from the Legislature.“There
 has to be something done, because otherwise this is a slap in the face 
to all those people who are his victims,” Democratic Rep. Cindy Neighbor
 said at the January hearing.But those efforts couldn’t advance 
because Republicans didn’t want to take more severe action over fear of 
setting a precedent. They said there was no previous instance of a 
lawmaker facing discipline for actions before they took office.“I
 don’t want to set a precedent that has never been done before in Kansas
 history,” Republican Rep. John Barker said when opposing any formal 
action against Coleman.<figure>

 </figure>If lawmakers file a new complaint against 
Coleman, committee members wouldn’t have the same concerns about setting
 a new precedent. In this case, Coleman would face discipline for 
actions he took while he was a sitting lawmaker.Few details have so far been released on Coleman’s arrest last month, but <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2021-11-01/kansas-state-rep-aaron-coleman-of-kansas-city-kansas-pleads-not-guilty-to-domestic-violence-charge" target="_blank">court documents</a>
 appear to show the battery charge stems from an alleged altercation 
with a family member. It appears that the family member may be Coleman’s
 brother.A group of women Democratic legislators say they will 
file a new complaint seeking expulsion if Coleman doesn't step down 
following the battery charge.“We are alarmed that an individual 
remains in a position of power after continued documented accounts of 
violence,” the lawmakers said in a statement. “The message must be sent 
that violence and dangerous conduct won’t be tolerated.”One of 
those lawmakers, Democratic Rep. Jo Ella Hoye, said the women had not 
set a deadline for Coleman to resign or face a new complaint.If a
 new complaint is filed, a committee would be created to investigate. 
That panel would then decide whether to dismiss the complaint or 
recommend some disciplinary action to the full House, which could 
admonish him or kick him out of the Legislature.With the 2022 
session slated to start Jan. 10, it’s unlikely a special investigative 
committee would be formed and consider a complaint before the next

Kansas rep. allegedly hit brother, threatened grandfather on night of arrest

TOPEKA — Managers of Boot Hill 
Casino &amp; Resort in Dodge City entered an agreement with a mobile 
sports gambling company in anticipation the state of Kansas would 
eventually adopt legislation and regulations to legalize that form of 
wagering.

DraftKings reached a deal with BHCMC, a subsidiary of Butler National
 Corp. that operates Boot Hill Casino, to eventually bring an online 
sportsbook to that western Kansas casino.

“DraftKings is a leader in this fast 
growing industry and will bring a trusted, experienced mobile sports 
betting application to sports fans in Kansas when the law allows,” said 
Clark Stewart, chief executive officer at Boot Hill Casino, said 
Tuesday.

Tuesday.Sports betting activity is legal in 29 states and the District of Columbia, but Kansas and Missouri have not joined that group.The Kansas Legislature has struggled for years to find consensus on a
 sports gambling bill. A recent Senate version would have granted the 
four state-owned casinos significant control of the market, while the 
House was keen to emphasize development of sports betting through Kansas
 Lottery retailers.The debate has grown complex with legislators fighting about revenue 
sharing, prospects of growth and other details. Organizations have 
advocated for inclusion in the bill a moratorium on wagering on 
greyhound races. In addition, there has been a push to allow Sedgwick 
County voters to reconsider a ban on placement of slot machines at the 
defunct Wichita Greyhound Park.A new proposal would permit state-owned casinos in Pittsburg, Dodge 
City, Mulvane and Kansas City, Kansas, as well as casinos operated by 
federally recognized Native American tribes, to open retail sports books
 and to form business relationships with online providers.The 2022 Legislature convenes in January, but there’s no guarantee a 
workable solution would be found to policy obstacles would emerge.“We look forward to the opportunities
 that lay ahead and remain&nbsp; optimistic that Kansas lawmakers will enact 
common sense legislation that will benefit the state and its&nbsp; 
constituents,” said Jeremy Elbaum, senior vice president of business 
development at DraftKings. “As we
 continue our quest to expand our mobile sportsbook footprint to every 
state in the U.S., we are eager to begin working with Boot Hill Casino 
&amp; Resort.”
