Genevieve Margaret (Smith) Brown, age 98, of Hays, Kansas passed away Thursday, November 25, 2021, at Via Christi Village, Hays. She was born September 10, 1923, &nbsp;in Mitchell County, Kansas to Joseph and Elizabeth (Feil) Smith. Genevieve graduated from Tipton High School in 1940. On September 2, 1946, she married Melvin “Bob” Robert Brown in Beloit, Kansas. He preceded her in death on August 18, 2001. She was a secretary and receptionist at King Financial Services for many years. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays, a 75-year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha the international &nbsp;community service sorority and a member of the Hays Daughters of Isabella. Genevieve is survived by her daughter, Patricia Frost and husband Wendell of Renton, Washington; sons, Roger Brown and wife Kathy of Oswego, Illinois, and Steven Brown of Hays; seven grandchildren; &nbsp;nine great grandchildren; as well as a sister, Mary Ann Roberts of Beloit. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Thomas. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, December 3, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays. WASHINGTON (AP) — Holiday decorations unveiled Monday for Joe and Jill Biden’s first White House Christmas honor frontline workers who persevered during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nurses, doctors, teachers, grocery store workers and others are recognized in this year's gigantic Gingerbread White House, which was made into a 350-pound gingerbread village with the addition of a school and police, fire and gas stations as well as a hospital, a post office, a grocery store and a warehouse to honor workers who stayed on the job.

Fewer people are likely to see the decked-out mansion in person this year, with public tours still suspended because of the continuing threat from COVID-19.&nbsp;

In remarks thanking volunteers for decorating, the first lady explained the vision behind her theme, speaking of unity and her view that everyone comes together around faith, family and friendship, gratitude and service, and love for one's community.

“For all of our differences, we are united by what really matters,” she said. “Like points on a star, we come together at the heart. That is what I wanted to reflect in our White House this year. In each room, we tell a story of gifts from the heart.”

The first lady, a longtime community college professor, invited&nbsp;Maryland&nbsp;second graders for Monday's unveiling of the holiday decorations. They were inspired by people the president and first lady met while traveling around the country this year, according to the White House.

Frontline workers are also represented in the iridescent doves and shooting stars that illuminate the East Colonnade hallway, “representing the peace and light brought to us by all the front-line workers and first responders during the pandemic,” the guidebook says.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the White House holiday season in other ways, though it remained unclear how parties and receptions may be tweaked to compensate for it.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki has said parties will be held, though they will be “different” from years past. Some indication will come Wednesday when the president and first lady and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, light a menorah to celebrate Hanukkah. Emhoff, who is Jewish, helped light the National Menorah on the Ellipse on Sunday.

Volunteers who decorated the White House came only from the surrounding area, instead of from all over the United States as in past years, because of COVID-19 concerns.

The White House also wasn't spared the supply shortages that many Americans are contending with. Some topiary trees took a little longer to arrive, said social secretary Carlos Elizondo.

The other showstopper of holidays at the White House is the official Christmas tree, an 18-foot-tall Fraser fir that commands the Blue Room and is trimmed with white doves and ribbon bearing the names of all U.S. states and territories to celebrate peace and unity.

More than 100 volunteers decorated the White House, including the Oval Office, while the Bidens spent Thanksgiving week in Nantucket,&nbsp;Massachusetts. They trimmed 41 Christmas trees and hung some 6,000 feet of ribbon and more than 10,000 ornaments.

Twenty-five wreaths adorn the exterior of the White House, and nearly 79,000 lights illuminate the Christmas trees, garlands, wreaths and other holiday displays.

Christmas stockings for each of the Biden grandchildren — Naomi, Finnegan, Maisy, Natalie, Hunter and baby Beau — hang from the fireplace mantel in the State Dining Room, which celebrates family, while two trees in that stately room are decorated with framed Biden family photos and photos of other first families during the holiday season.

Many of the photos are personal favorites of Jill Biden, who picked them out of old family albums on trips home to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/delaware">Delaware</a>, said Elizabeth Alexander, the first lady's communications director.

The decorations are the product of months of work by the first lady and her staff in the White House East Wing, starting as far back as June.

A second grade class from Malcolm Elementary School in Waldorf, Maryland, was invited to the White House and bantered with PBS Kids characters Martin and Chris Kratt from “Wild Kratts” and costumed characters Miss Elaina, Daniel Tiger, Molly of Denali, Arthur and Rosita from “Sesame Street.”

The first lady then read her children's book, “Don't Forget, God Bless Our Troops."

“Let's move on to happier things,” she said after stopping to ask the kids about their pets and one boy started talking about his dogs that had died.

She invited a local National Guard family whose daughter was among the second graders to highlight the role the Guard has played in the U.S. response to COVID-19, and military families spending the holidays away from loved ones.

White House holiday decor honors COVID-19 frontline workers

Roth is a grain farmer with a strong interest in water conservation and irrigation technology. He was announced as the recipient of the award at the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts’ 77th&nbsp;Annual Convention in Wichita, and receives $10,000 and a crystal award for being selected.

Using new technologies and innovative ideas, he has demonstrated on his own farm that reducing irrigation is possible without negatively affecting the economic bottom line,” said Dan Meyerhoff, Kansas Association of Conservation Districts Executive Director. “Dwane recently shared with me ‘I’ve only just begun.’ He exemplifies the extraordinary commitment celebrated by the Leopold Conservation Award.”

Grow crops with less water. That challenge spurred an ever-expanding land ethic in Dwane Roth. &nbsp;

Dwane knew of the declining water level in the Ogallala aquifer he farms above. He felt he was already doing his part by increasing crop yields with reduced equipment and labor costs. Then a cropland landlord challenged him to look into irrigation technology.

Despite droughts and sandy soils prone to wind erosion, he quickly met the challenge and became a sought-after expert on the role of soil moisture management technology’s role in water conservation.

As one of Kansas’ first “Water Technology Farms” he began demonstrating emerging irrigation technologies, cropping patterns, and management techniques in 2016. Energy-efficient bubblers, probes, cameras and drones delivered irrigation, measured soil moisture, and enabled seamless data collection. Dwane acquired an insatiable appetite for information that showed how innovation could extend the aquifer’s lifetime while improving his soil’s health.

Dwane soon volunteered more of his 6,000 acres of farmland for the project. Testing irrigation technologies would ultimately lead to adoption by other farmers, but he wasn’t willing to wait. He spearheaded an effort that resulted in other area farmers saving more than 35,000 acre-feet of water per year.

With a knack for getting others to see themselves as a community of water users, he organized a summit in 2019 of food supply chain interests in Finney County. With a goal of making the county a model of sustainability in food production, his leadership sustained the effort through 2020’s shutdown.

Dwane serves as a technology farm advisor to universities, state agencies and Syngenta. He also works to identify ways to streamline conservation cost-share programs and simplify decision-making processes for farmers. He regularly attends GreenBiz events that bring together companies, cities and industries to drive technology and sustainability initiatives. It’s there where corporate leaders value hearing directly from this innovative fourth-generation Kansas farmer.

Dwane and wife Kim have three daughters. His land ethic has rubbed off on their daughter Grace. Her FFA project began the Kansas Youth Water Advocates Program, which teaches high school students to appreciate and advocate for local water resources.

Dwane is aware that water availability is not the only challenge facing Kansas agriculture. Poor water quality from increasing salinity and heavy metals harms soil and crops. High density cropping with limited crop diversity impacts the region’s wildlife. In response, he’s seeking other ways to improve the entire ecological community.

He has utilized the Conservation Reserve Program to plant native grasses on more than 100 acres of field corners to improve wildlife habitat. Dwane is experimenting to determine which cover crops provide cattle feed while improving soil health and erosion control in his region. His farming practices have also caught the interest of companies whose mission is reversing climate change.

More than three decades into his farming career, Dwane has begun transitioning ownership of some of his farmland to his nephews. The greatest motivation of this tireless agricultural conservation proponent is making sure the next generation has a chance to grow food while improving the landscape.

That challenge spurred an ever-expanding land ethic in Dwane Roth. &nbsp;Dwane knew of the declining water level in the Ogallala aquifer he farms above. He felt he was already doing his part by increasing crop yields with reduced equipment and labor costs. Then a cropland landlord challenged him to look into irrigation technology.Despite droughts and sandy soils prone to wind erosion, he quickly met the challenge and became a sought-after expert on the role of soil moisture management technology’s role in water conservation.As one of Kansas’ first “Water Technology Farms” he began demonstrating emerging irrigation technologies, cropping patterns, and management techniques in 2016. Energy-efficient bubblers, probes, cameras and drones delivered irrigation, measured soil moisture, and enabled seamless data collection. Dwane acquired an insatiable appetite for information that showed how innovation could extend the aquifer’s lifetime while improving his soil’s health.Dwane soon volunteered more of his 6,000 acres of farmland for the project. Testing irrigation technologies would ultimately lead to adoption by other farmers, but he wasn’t willing to wait. He spearheaded an effort that resulted in other area farmers saving more than 35,000 acre-feet of water per year.With a knack for getting others to see themselves as a community of water users, he organized a summit in 2019 of food supply chain interests in Finney County. With a goal of making the county a model of sustainability in food production, his leadership sustained the effort through 2020’s shutdown.Dwane serves as a technology farm advisor to universities, state agencies and Syngenta. He also works to identify ways to streamline conservation cost-share programs and simplify decision-making processes for farmers. He regularly attends GreenBiz events that bring together companies, cities and industries to drive technology and sustainability initiatives. It’s there where corporate leaders value hearing directly from this innovative fourth-generation Kansas farmer.Dwane and wife Kim have three daughters. His land ethic has rubbed off on their daughter Grace. Her FFA project began the Kansas Youth Water Advocates Program, which teaches high school students to appreciate and advocate for local water resources.Dwane is aware that water availability is not the only challenge facing Kansas agriculture. Poor water quality from increasing salinity and heavy metals harms soil and crops. High density cropping with limited crop diversity impacts the region’s wildlife. In response, he’s seeking other ways to improve the entire ecological community.He has utilized the Conservation Reserve Program to plant native grasses on more than 100 acres of field corners to improve wildlife habitat. Dwane is experimenting to determine which cover crops provide cattle feed while improving soil health and erosion control in his region. His farming practices have also caught the interest of companies whose mission is reversing climate change.More than three decades into his farming career, Dwane has begun transitioning ownership of some of his farmland to his nephews. The greatest motivation of this tireless agricultural conservation proponent is making sure the next generation has a chance to grow food while improving the landscape.

“Is there anything to do in Kansas?”&nbsp;

“Oh, yes.&nbsp;There are a HUNDRED things to do in Kansas!”&nbsp;

If you don’t believe me, take the word of author Roxie Yonkey. She recently wrote a book titled “100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die.”&nbsp;

Roxie was born and raised in Nebraska and always enjoyed writing. At college in Virginia, she became a staff writer.&nbsp;

Roxie came to Kansas for a job opportunity at the Goodland newspaper. Her plan was to stay for a year. More than 30 years later, she’s still here.&nbsp;

When Roxie took the job in Goodland, she met a good-looking guy at the next desk.&nbsp;&nbsp;Four years later, they would be married. Roxie and Eric bought a newspaper in Syracuse and sold it in 2000.&nbsp;

They came back to northwest Kansas. Roxie found that she enjoyed writing about Kansas attractions. She designed the regional travel guide called the Ultimate Guide to Northwest Kansas, worked for the Sherman County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and became administrator for the Kansas I-70 Association.&nbsp;

When those positions ended, she was not sure what to do next. “I was sitting and staring at my computer, asking myself, `What do I do now?’ Then it was as if a voice said to me, `What do you have in your hand?’ I answered, `A computer mouse…’&nbsp;&nbsp;I realized I could become a travel writer and blogger,” Roxie said.&nbsp;

In 2019, Roxie launched a website called&nbsp;<a href="http://www.roxieontheroad.com/" target="_blank">www.roxieontheroad.com</a>&nbsp;of which she is the Chief Exploration Officer. Her first post was about the Butterfield Trail Museum in the rural community of Russell Springs, population 24 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Roxie traveled the state extensively to research a book. “I would wake in the night and visualize how the book would go,” Roxie said. “It was writing itself.”&nbsp;

In 2021, Roxie published her book, titled “100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The cover features Kansas sunflowers plus a picture of a tin bucket, to remind you of a bucket list.&nbsp;

“I wanted things from every portion of the state,” Roxie said. The book describes Kansas from corner to corner, from Atchison to Point of Rocks and from Route 66 to the Arikaree Breaks.&nbsp;

“You just have to include certain things, such as Eisenhower and Amelia Earhart,” Roxie said. The book includes big city attractions such as Legends in Kansas City, Old Town in Wichita, and the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, plus many, many rural events such as the Outhouse tour in Elk Falls (I am not making this up).&nbsp;

Descriptions include natural wonders such as the new Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park and Cheyenne Bottoms, plus historic landmarks like the Brown v. Board of Education site and John Brown mural at the state capitol. Then there are distinctly Kansas activities such as visiting the Little House on the Prairie or singing the state song at the Home on the Range cabin.&nbsp;

The book is conveniently organized into sections on Food and Drink, Music and Entertainment, Sports and Recreation, Culture and History, and Shopping and Fashion.&nbsp;&nbsp;She even created an index of suggested itineraries and a list of seasonal activities to be best pursued in the winter, spring, summer or fall.&nbsp;

Ultimately, the book includes much more than 100 things to do. There are photos and descriptions of each of the 100 things, which Roxie augmented with many additional related tips and venue lists. She hopes her book will make a positive difference for the state.&nbsp;

NOW THAT'S RURAL:  Roxie Yonkey, '100 Things to Do in Kansas'

On Nov. 28, 1942, fire engulfed the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston, killing 492 people in the deadliest nightclub blaze ever. DIY investing is one of the hottest trends out there. You’ve probably heard about apps focused on micro-investing, robo-investing, and DIY investing such as Robinhood, M1 Finance, Stash, Betterment and Acorns.

Now, if you’re not hip to the lingo, DIY stands for “do it yourself.” You no longer need a middleman to jump into the stock market. You don’t even need a computer. Heck, you don’t even need a bunch of money. All you need is a smartphone and a lot of risk tolerance. In 2021, anyone and their mom can get in on the stock market for as little as $1&nbsp;and&nbsp;make trades for free. And with that low barrier to entry comes a whole slew of people wanting to ride the gravy train to wealthy town.&nbsp;

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Well, I’m going to go against Smash Mouth and say all that glitters may&nbsp;not, in fact, be gold.

You see, when you’re doing it yourself, that means just that—you’re doing it&nbsp;all by yourself.&nbsp;All the responsibility is on&nbsp;your&nbsp;shoulders. And the offerings you’re limited to on these apps are usually single stocks, options and cryptocurrency—which are all super volatile, high-risk investments.

I don’t recommend you invest in anything you don’t fully understand—and most DIY investors don’t understand the ins and outs of options trading or the unregulated, virtual Wild West of crypto. And with all the confusion and hype can come some poor investing decisions.

Let’s be real. People flock to these investing apps because they seem like a fast track to get rich. They want to become millionaires, and they fall into the trap of believing this is a shortcut to make their financial dreams come true. It’s easy to see why they think this works. However, one of the biggest myths about millionaires is that they take big risks with their money to build their wealth.

In fact, Ramsey Solutions talked to over 10,000 millionaires, and we found out that exactly zero said that single stocks were one of the top three factors that contributed to their wealth. That’s right. Zero.

Now, more than ever, we have access to so much information. But just because you have access to the information doesn’t necessarily mean you know what to do with it, does it? Here are a handful of pitfalls with DIY investing:

●Not recognizing your level of risk tolerance

●Improperly planning for future financial objectives

●Unnecessary trading (too much or too little)

●Having little portfolio diversification

●Panic selling that can derail your long-term plans

KAMEL: The pitfalls of DIY investing

MANHATTAN — Kansas 4-H youth development specialist Beth Hinshaw knows how important meaningful family time is during the holidays, and how it may be a challenge to come up with ideas on how to spend that precious time together. &nbsp;

That’s one of the very reasons why the national 4-H program has published a&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/about/4-h-at-home/holidays" target="_blank">holiday activity guide</a>.&nbsp;

“[The Holiday Activity Guide] has great ways to spend quality time with people, and we can learn so much from our family when we see them at the holidays,” Hinshaw said. “And to be able to have these learning experiences with them – that'll make a memory for us as well.”&nbsp;

The holiday guide, she said, contains an array of fun activities, such as making ornaments, family story time, visual art projects, and many food recipes.&nbsp;

“One of the things I think about, in my own experience, is the things I learned in the kitchen, during the holidays from my grandmothers,” Hinshaw said.&nbsp;
