SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a suspect on multiple charges after police found him in a bank.

Just after 9p.m. Monday, police responded to a report of a possible burglary at the Communication Federal Credit Union, 1015 SW Wanamaker in Topeka, according to Lt. John Trimble.

Officers arrived on scene and found a suspect later identified as 28-year-old Martin Sommers still inside the bank. A perimeter was established as was communication with the suspect. Police took Sommers into custody without further incident.

The 1000 block of SW Wanamaker was shut down from approximately 9:15 p.m. to 10:00 p.m, according to Trimble.

Police brought Sommers to the Law Enforcement Center for interviews and then booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Felony Criminal Damage, Criminal Trespass and Raising a False Alarm.

Carle Frederick Kuhn was born on November 22, 1950 in Beloit, Kansas, the son of Frederick and Lola&nbsp;Pargett&nbsp;Kuhn. He died suddenly on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at his home in Beloit at the age of 70.

He grew up and attended schools in Cawker City, where he graduated from Cawker City High School in 1968. He went on to attend Ft. Hays State University, where he lettered in tennis and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education, and later his master’s degree in secondary&nbsp;administration.

On May 13, 1972, he was united in marriage with Carol Quillin at the Osborne United Methodist Church.

Carle taught at Concordia for five years before returning to Beloit, where he taught and coached track and cross country for many years. He devoted a lot of his time to his sports teams in addition to the Junior Olympics, and took great pride in the annual Beloit Relays, which is considered one of the&nbsp;premier&nbsp;track&nbsp;meets in the state of Kansas.&nbsp;Carle was also in the process of writing a book about the history of the Beloit Relays&nbsp;– a project the family hopes to complete for him.&nbsp;He also loved taking his teams to state Track, and also served on the rules committee for many years.

Carle&nbsp;was able to achieve a life-long goal of obtaining his pilot’s license and owning his own plane.&nbsp;Following his retirement from teaching, he went back to school at KSU-Salina&nbsp;for two years, in a different field,&nbsp;to take&nbsp;an A&amp;P (Airframe and Power Plant) course as a certified small airplane mechanic, and also ended up teaching some of the classes. He also enjoyed working at the Beloit Airport for many years.

He also enjoyed traveling with Carol, and they were able to experience trips to the Olympic Games in both Los Angeles and Atlanta, and the Olympic Trials in Sacramento, watching two of his previous local athletes. They also&nbsp;took an enjoyable trip to Alaska, and had always wanted to return.

Carle was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Carol; two brothers, Tim and his wife Faye of Pratt, and Tom and his wife Cathy of Prairie Village; his brother-in-law Mike Quillin and his wife Candice of DeSoto; and a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, November 12 at the Cawker City United Methodist Church. The family suggests casual dress. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. with family present from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 11 at the funeral home. 

Memorials may be given to the Beloit High School Booster Club.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal Nov. 1 shooting have made a second arrest in the&nbsp; case.&nbsp; On Monday evening, police <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20073275">booked 18-year-old Davaun Carter</a> into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested murder charges, according to the sheriff's department arrest report.

At approximately 5:30 p.m, November 1, police were dispatched to a shooting call in the 300 block of W. 10th St. North in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macey. 

After arriving on scene, they located&nbsp; 22-year-old Braekwon Bennett with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Officers learned that two male suspects, an 18-year-old later identified as Carter and a 17-year-old arrived at the apartment and confronted Bennett. There was an altercation that led to multiple shots being fired. Carter was also shot during the altercation, and both suspects then left the apartment.

The suspects later arrived at an area hospital, where Carter was admitted for treatment. The 17-year-old was contacted at the hospital and attempted to run from police but was taken into custody. The 17-year-old was booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility for First-Degree Murder. Carter remained hospitalized until Monday afternoon. Police will present the case to the district attorney.

Some families are chaotic, fun and full of laughter, while others are stoic and boring. Some families are messy, angry and hard to communicate with, and still other families are a mix of all three. Regardless of your family type, the holiday season tends to create more complications and tensions than usual. And yet for a million different reasons, we’re always caught off guard when the holidays roll around.

But here’s the deal: The holidays don’t just sneak up on us out of nowhere. They happen at the same time every year. So here are a few things we can do in advance to make sure our time with family is filled with less stress, less conflict and less awkwardness — and more laughter joy, and connection.

Here are my top five tips for navigating family dynamics this holiday season:

Before you book your flight to grandma’s, take some time to think about why you’re going. What is the true purpose of this trip? Is it to help your kids get to know the relatives they haven’t met yet? Are you going because of a sense of obligation and duty? Do you love being with your family? Clarify why you are going.

Holiday angst often comes from either a fantasy picture of a perfect family gathering or simply a bad attitude. Both are unhelpful. Do a reality check before you go, be honest about the potential highs and lows, and when things get complicated, always go back to your why.

Clear holiday boundaries are important, even for the most connected and loving families. Remember that YOU get to decide&nbsp;where you will or will not travel, who’ll you invite into your home, how much money you’ll spend, and how much time you’ll devote to extended family this year. Decide ahead of time if there are any off-limits conversation topics, and hold each other accountable. Off-limit topics might include politics, vaccines, religion, whose casserole is better, or all the above. Also, decide a dollar amount for gift spending — and stick to it!

Choose to set your boundaries now, before things get chaotic and busy, or you find yourself neck-deep in a political debate with Uncle Steve during the Secret Santa exchange. Remember to hold firm to your established boundaries and speak up or walk away when someone violates them.

3. Remember, you can’t control everything

There only two things in the world you can control: your thoughts and your actions. That’s it. You can’t control the way your older brother still makes fun of you for something you did when you were 12. You can’t control your aunt’s passive aggressive comments. But you can control your attitude, your kindness, your integrity, and your boundaries. When you choose to let go of what you can’t control and take ownership of what you can, you’ll immediately reduce holiday-related stress. &nbsp;

After you establish your personal boundaries, remember the holidays aren’t all about you. If you agree to travel and visit someone’s home, especially if you’re going to your spouse’s or significant other’s family celebration, remember that you are a guest. Simply put — get over yourself.&nbsp;If you have to sleep on the uncomfortable couch at your girlfriend’s parents’ house and eat their weird vegan food, remember that you’re not the star of the show. It’s not your home and not your event. Once you commit to an event or activity, do it with a good attitude.

And if you’re the one inviting your significant other to the family event, remember that your guest is sacrificing their usual comforts and traditions. Be hospitable. Ask them what they like to do or eat during the holidays, ask about food allergies or other needs, and honor the fact that they’re missing their own family time.

The holidays should be full of hugs, smiles and long conversations at the dinner table. They should be about telling the same stories over and over again, holding hands, watching old movies and serving one another. But this type of gathering doesn’t happen without prioritizing relationships and genuine connection. Be intentional and look for joy and hope. Don’t focus on division and disconnection.

And while you’re at it, remember this time of year is challenging and lonely for a lot of folks. Don’t be shy about inviting others to spend the holidays with you too, even if you don’t know them well. The more laughter and joy around a table, the better.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal Sunday shooting and have identified the victim as 16-year-old Brandi Williams.

Just before 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, police responded to a shooting call at a home in the 900 block of N Volutsia in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy. Once on scene, officers located Williams unresponsive in the front yard of a home. She was transported to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. 

Another victim, an 18-year-old girl, was located with non-lifethreatening gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital for treatment of her injuries and later released.

Officers learned that multiple people, adults and juveniles, were at a gathering at the home when an argument started between the two girls and two boys, according to Macy.

During the argument, the boys produced firearms and began firing in the direction of the two girls. As a result, Williams and the 18-year-old girl were both struck by gunfire.

Officers located the boys and taken into custody. They have been identified as a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old. After interviews, they were both booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility on murder charges, according to Macy.

“While we have another sad and tragic life lost too soon, we’ve been highlighting the increase in juvenile crime for the last fifteen months.” Said Wichita Police Chief Gordon&nbsp; Ramsay. “Families and community members must take note of this disturbing trend and be as involved as possible to help keep our youth safe.”

Vietnam experiences focus of next Ike Virtual Book Club program

On Nov. 8, 2000, a statewide recount began in Florida, which emerged as critical in deciding the winner of the 2000 presidential election. Earlier that day, Vice President Al Gore had telephoned Texas Gov. George W. Bush to concede, but called back about an hour later to retract his concession. 

In 1793, the Louvre began admitting the public, even though the French museum had been officially open since August.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — As COVID-19 ravaged Hungary in April, Budapest resident Akos Sipos received his second vaccine dose, believing he was doing the right thing for his own health and to help end the pandemic.

But Sipos, 46, soon discovered that the vaccine he received, Russia’s Sputnik V, disqualified him from traveling to a number of other countries where it hadn’t been approved. The nations include the United States, which is pushing forward with a new air travel policy that will make Sipos and many like him ineligible to enter.

“I thought it’s better to get Sputnik today than a Western vaccine at some uncertain future time,” Sipos, who works as a search engine optimization specialist, said of his initial decision to receive the jab. “But I couldn’t have known at that time that I wouldn’t be able to travel with Sputnik.”

Starting Monday, the United States plans to reopen to foreign travelers who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. But there’s a catch: non-immigrant adults need to have received vaccines authorized by the Food and Drug Administration or which received an emergency use listing from the World Health Organization.

That leaves many hopeful travelers across the globe who have taken full courses of vaccines widely used in other parts of the world — Sputnik V and the China-produced CanSino jab, in particular — scrambling to get reinoculated with shots approved by U.S. authorities.

Two other Chinese vaccines, Sinopharm and Sinovac, have been approved by the WHO and will thus be accepted for travel into the U.S.

Mexico received nearly 12 million doses of CanSino and almost 20 million of Sputnik V after shipments began earlier this year. Residents who got the required two shots of those vaccines now are looking to top up with shots of the Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca or Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccines, hoping that will make them eligible to cross the border.

“They screwed those of us who got this vaccine,” said Rosenda Ruiz, 52, a public relations manager in Mexico City who received Sputnik V. “There are lots of Mexicans who want to travel, but we can’t. I am thinking of getting whatever other vaccine I can get.”

While Sputnik V is used in around 70 countries worldwide, it has still not been approved by either the FDA or the U.N. health agency. Nearly 1 million people have received the vaccine in Hungary, a Central European country of around 10 million.

Hungary was one of only two countries in the 27-member European Union to roll out the Russian vaccine. Fewer than 20,000 people received it in Slovakia.

Judit Molnar, president of the Association of Hungarian Travel Agencies, says so many Hungarians being unable to travel to the United States — or even to some countries in the EU which don’t accept the jab — has had an effect on her industry.

“We see that in the last few months, travelers are increasingly asking us when they can travel to America,” said Molnar, who is also president of the OTP Travel agency.

“These travelers are saying they really hope the situation will change and that the United States will accept the Sputnik vaccine. There are many people who would like to travel and in Hungary, many people were vaccinated with Sputnik,” she said.

Citizens of Russia, where use of Sputnik V is most widespread, also are seeking Western-approved shots so they can travel abroad. Faced with the prospect of being turned away from flights, Russians have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/covid-vaccine-russia-travel-serbia-sputnik-v-02aa2bc49d00299493aa46c1af5e15a2">booked tours to Serbia</a>, which has authorized use of the Pfizer-BioNTech, China’s Sinopharm and the AstraZeneca vaccines in addition to Sputnik V.

Russia, which unveiled Sputnik V with much fanfare as the world’s first registered vaccine in August 2020, criticized U.S. plans to leave the vaccine off its list of approved shots.

“There are exactly zero reasons for such decisions,” Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the foreign relations committee in the Russian Duma, or lower house of parliament. “The effectiveness and safety of the Sputnik V vaccine has been proven not only by specialists, but also by its practical application.”

But the World Health Organization&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-united-nations-world-health-organization-europe-russia-3e8159d00b525c187864f8b68252691e">still is reviewing the vaccine</a>, and months of holdups make it unclear when Sputnik V might receive an emergency use listing.

Hungary’s government has made bilateral agreements with 24 countries — including Russia, Serbia, Mongolia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan — on mutually recognizing proof of vaccination, regardless of vaccine type.

Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told The Associated Press that it is open to a similar agreement with the United States, but “currently there is no ongoing negotiation.”

Sipos, the search engine specialist, said that while he was confident in Sputnik V’s efficacy, he recently sought a Western-approved booster shot, Moderna, so he could travel where he wants.

“I felt deceived because they accept Sputnik in more than 60 countries in the world, but in tons of other countries they don’t,” he said.

Silvia Morales, 38, a public high school teacher in Monterrey, Mexico, said she recently received a Moderna shot after hearing that the U.S. government wouldn’t recognize her CanSino vaccine.

She said she “needed to have peace of mind” about her level of protection against the virus.

“But I also love traveling to the United States,” she said.

Foreign citizens seek US-approved shots as travel resumes

Today in History - Nov. 7

Brad Meltzer&nbsp;is a prolific, multimedia best-selling author and creator of dozens of legal and historical thrillers, television shows, TED Talks, comic books and children’s books, among many other pursuits.

But he never imagined that two of his children’s books in his “<a href="https://www.ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com/" target="_blank">Ordinary People Change the World</a>” series would stir a free speech controversy.

He learned in September that the Central York School Board in Pennsylvania had&nbsp;<a href="https://miami.cbslocal.com/2021/09/21/brad-meltzer-books-banned-pennsylvania-school-board/" target="_blank">vetoed a list of resources</a>&nbsp;that were suggested last year for use in the wake of the&nbsp;George Floyd&nbsp;murder and civil unrest. The list, which included Meltzer’s books “I am Rosa Parks” and “I am Martin Luther King Jr.,” was “frozen” for some time, as board members put it. The board eventually nixed the list, asserting that the materials were divisive. In August of this year, one school principal circulated the list and said, “Please see the attached list of resources that are not to be permitted to be utilized in the classroom.”

Meltzer learned the news through his social media sites, he said in an interview. “People started telling me they banned our books on&nbsp;Rosa Parks&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dr. King.” He was stunned. After all, the books were meant to “help kids build character, kindness and compassion one real hero at a time,” as Meltzer put it on his website. Among the heroes featured in the series along with Parks and King are&nbsp;Neil Armstrong, Benjamin Franklin, Jane Goodall, Jackie Robinson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lucille Ball. Aimed at ages 5 to 8, the books are illustrated by&nbsp;Christopher Eliopoulos.

“People were of course shocked that anyone would ban heroes” like Parks and King,” Meltzer said. “Soon, Fox News called and asked me to come talk about it. Then CNN did the same. When Fox and CNN agree, I think the school board realized they screwed up.”

Board President&nbsp;Jane Johnson&nbsp;said, “What we are attempting to do is balance legitimate academic freedom with what could be literature/materials that are too activist in nature, and may lean more toward indoctrination rather than age-appropriate academic content.”

Meltzer viewed the controversy as a First Amendment issue. “Race is a hard subject, but if you don’t talk to kids about race, you’re doing them a disservice.”

Meltzer moved quickly to fight the ban. He helped residents gather hundreds of the “not-to-be-permitted” books to be placed in Little Free Library locations in the area. Students also protested.

“Really, it was the amazing students in the community who fought to bring these books back,” he said. Meltzer, who lives in Florida, went to the school board meeting in September and read aloud from “I am Rosa Parks.”

The board voted unanimously to allow access to the books. “We speak and listen to parents and community members to better understand and address concerns,” said board member&nbsp;Jodi Grothe, according to the&nbsp;York Dispatch. “We have heard you.”

Meltzer offered advice for those who are experiencing similar book bans, which have multiplied across the country as legislators and school boards ban race-related educational materials that might make students uncomfortable.

“Take the lessons of Dr. King and Rosa Parks,” Meltzer said, “Do not stand for this. Protest. These bans are only going to increase. They are born out of fear and they work because people are scared. Look at the words they use to justify them: ‘Indoctrinating your children.’ The word indoctrination has been used throughout history to target the Black community, the Jewish community, the gay community and so many more. Don’t let them divide us. Do not stand for it.”

Fighting a book ban exercised and defended First Amendment freedoms! Locals&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/assembly/" target="_blank">assembled</a>&nbsp;by organizing book drives and student protests. Meltzer&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/petition/" target="_blank">petitioned</a>&nbsp;by speaking before the school board. They all defended&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/speech/" target="_blank">free speech</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/press/" target="_blank">press freedom</a>&nbsp;by opposing censorship of books based on the ideas in them.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What is next for Meltzer? “I’ll write even more on this issue,” he said. His latest “I am” book, out Oct. 21, features&nbsp;Oprah Winfrey.

“In February,” Meltzer added, “we have ‘I am Malala Yousafzai’ and ‘I am Muhammad Ali,’ purposely to teach protests. And wait until you see who’s coming after that.”

 </figure>By TONY MAUROBrad Meltzer&nbsp;is a prolific, multimedia best-selling author and creator of dozens of legal and historical thrillers, television shows, TED Talks, comic books and children’s books, among many other pursuits.But he never imagined that two of his children’s books in his “<a href="https://www.ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com/" target="_blank">Ordinary People Change the World</a>” series would stir a free speech controversy.He learned in September that the Central York School Board in Pennsylvania had&nbsp;<a href="https://miami.cbslocal.com/2021/09/21/brad-meltzer-books-banned-pennsylvania-school-board/" target="_blank">vetoed a list of resources</a>&nbsp;that were suggested last year for use in the wake of the&nbsp;George Floyd&nbsp;murder and civil unrest. The list, which included Meltzer’s books “I am Rosa Parks” and “I am Martin Luther King Jr.,” was “frozen” for some time, as board members put it. The board eventually nixed the list, asserting that the materials were divisive. After all, the books were meant to “help kids build character, kindness and compassion one real hero at a time,” as Meltzer put it on his website. Among the heroes featured in the series along with Parks and King are&nbsp;Neil Armstrong, Benjamin Franklin, Jane Goodall, Jackie Robinson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lucille Ball. Aimed at ages 5 to 8, the books are illustrated by&nbsp;Christopher Eliopoulos.“People were of course shocked that anyone would ban heroes” like Parks and King,” Meltzer said. “Soon, Fox News called and asked me to come talk about it. Then CNN did the same. When Fox and CNN agree, I think the school board realized they screwed up.”Board President&nbsp;Jane Johnson&nbsp;said, “What we are attempting to do is balance legitimate academic freedom with what could be literature/materials that are too activist in nature, and may lean more toward indoctrination rather than age-appropriate academic content.”Meltzer viewed the controversy as a First Amendment issue. “Race is a hard subject, but if you don’t talk to kids about race, you’re doing them a disservice.”Meltzer moved quickly to fight the ban. He helped residents gather hundreds of the “not-to-be-permitted” books to be placed in Little Free Library locations in the area. Students also protested.“Really, it was the amazing students in the community who fought to bring these books back,” he said. Look at the words they use to justify them: ‘Indoctrinating your children.’ The word indoctrination has been used throughout history to target the Black community, the Jewish community, the gay community and so many more. Don’t let them divide us. Do not stand for it.”Fighting a book ban exercised and defended First Amendment freedoms! Locals&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/assembly/" target="_blank">assembled</a>&nbsp;by organizing book drives and student protests. Meltzer&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/petition/" target="_blank">petitioned</a>&nbsp;by speaking before the school board. They all defended&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/speech/" target="_blank">free speech</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/press/" target="_blank">press freedom</a>&nbsp;by opposing censorship of books based on the ideas in them.&nbsp;&nbsp;What is next for Meltzer? “I’ll write even more on this issue,” he said. His latest “I am” book, out Oct. 21, features&nbsp;Oprah Winfrey.“In February,” Meltzer added, “we have ‘I am Malala Yousafzai’ and ‘I am Muhammad Ali,’ purposely to teach protests. The federal agency that oversees U.S. election security pushed back at unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in a statement, saying that local election offices had detection measures that "make it highly difficult to commit fraud through counterfeit ballots." Sen. Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, said Trump was "damaging the cause of freedom" and inflaming "destructive and dangerous passions" by claiming, without foundation, that the election was rigged and stolen from him. As the nation set daily records for confirmed cases of the coronavirus, two senior administration officials confirmed that Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, had tested positive.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A 21-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/kansas">Kansas</a>&nbsp;lawmaker charged with domestic battery over a disturbance involving his brother said Thursday that he's stepping away from his legislative duties for a week.

Freshman Democratic state Rep. Aaron Coleman of Kansas City tweeted that he's taking a “leave of absence” following a Johnson County district judge's order Monday that he undergo a mental health evaluation. Coleman said he's required “to admit myself to a mental health facility.”

Coleman didn't immediately respond to text, email and cellphone messages seeking further details. His tweet described the prosecution of him as “Frivolous” and an attorney entered a not-guilty plea for him Monday.

A House committee reprimanded him in February over allegations of abusing girls and young women before taking office. Coleman had acknowledged some of the behavior on social media and said he'd been a troubled teenager.

He also was banned last month from the Kansas Department of Labor’s offices over allegations of disruptive behavior. Coleman said he was trying to help constituents.

The misdemeanor battery charge against Coleman stems from an incident Saturday night at his grandfather's home. His grandmother has said that the dispute with his brother was over “religious beliefs” and Coleman also accused his brother of stealing his phone.

Some House Democrats, including their leader, have called on Coleman to resign.
