MANHATTAN - Photographs by the iconic Gordon Parks and rising star Doug Barrett are a part of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art's 25th anniversary celebration.

The exhibitions, Gordon Parks: Homeward to the Prairie I Come and Doug Barrett: Find Your Voice, are scheduled through May 28. The Parks exhibition, in the Marion Pelton Gallery, features photographs from a gift that Parks gave to K-State in 1973 and those made during visits to Manhattan in the 1980s, according to information from the museum. The Barrett exhibition, in the Archie and Dorothy Hyle Family Gallery, offers a glimpse of work by the "Manhattan-based photographer who makes compelling visual stories about people with whom he made personal connections, such as homeless veterans around the country and residents of Manhattan’s historic African American neighborhood," the museum noted in a news release.

"The exhibition also exemplifies Parks' influence on Barrett and other contemporary artists," the museum added.

The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, 701 Beach Lane, is located on the southeast corner of the Kansas State University campus. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Free parking is available adjacent to the building.

In addition to in-person viewing, both exhibitions are also offered virtually and have a 3D touring option. The exhibitions also can be viewed at <a href="http://beach.k-state.edu/explore">beach.k-state.edu/explore</a>.

The Beach Museum also plans to offer free public programs that "offer ways to learn more about these photographers and why their work is relevant." Those programs are as follows.

●Considering Techniques: Jim Richardson on Gordon Parks, will be offered via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. CST Feb. 24. This free livesteam presentation is a gallery conversation with Richardson, a photographer for National Geographic magazine from Lindsborg. Art Matters Now: Three Artists Reflect, at 7 p.m. CDT April 6, is a conversation with multimedia artist Andrew F. Scott, Academy Award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker Kevin Willmott and six-time Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard. Each has a vision for how the arts can function as a tool for making our society more just and equitable.&nbsp; Presence of Absence: Gordon Parks Through an Empathic Lens, at 7:30 p.m. CDT April 7, features Blanchard and the E-Collective in concert, with staging by K-State students under the direction of Scott and Mathew Gaynor. Since last fall, Scott has been working with a group of K-State students, under the direction of Gaynor, head of the K-State art department, on a unique digital stage set for the performance. Both events are free, but tickets are required for the April 7 concert and can be obtained at McCain Auditorium beginning March 23 at the McCain Ticket Office, which is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Today in History - Feb. 19

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The former suburban Minneapolis police officer who said she confused her handgun for her Taser when she fatally shot&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/death-of-daunte-wright-shootings-police-coronavirus-pandemic-minneapolis-d88c7d626eebcdea975dc249309a4fa5">Daunte Wright</a>&nbsp;was sentenced Friday to two years in prison, a penalty below state guidelines after the judge found mitigating factors warranted a lesser sentence.

Kim Potter was convicted in December of first- and second-degree manslaughter in the April 11 killing of Wright, a 20-year-old Black motorist. She was sentenced only on the more serious charge in accordance with state law.

For someone with no criminal history, such as Potter, the state guidelines on that charge range from slightly more than six years to about 8 1/2 years in prison, with the presumptive sentence being just over seven years.

Prosecutors said the presumptive sentence was proper, but defense attorneys asked for a sentence below the guidelines, including a sentence of probation only.

Judge Regina Chu imposed the sentence after hearing from Wright’s family and Potter.

Wright’s mother said she will never be able to forgive Potter and would only refer to her as “the defendant” because Potter only referred to her 20-year-old son as “the driver” at trial.

“She never once said his name. And for that I’ll never be able to forgive you. And I’ll never be able to forgive you for what you’ve stolen from us,” a tearful Wright said.

“A police officer who was supposed to serve and protect so much took so much away from us ... My life and my world will never ever be the same again,” she said, adding later: “Daunte Demetrius Wright, I will continue to fight in your name until driving while black is no longer a death sentence.”

Wright was killed after Brooklyn Center officers pulled him over for having expired license tags and an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror. The shooting, which came in the midst of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/derek-chauvin-convicted-george-floyd-killing-d93d1f9fc61a5261e179240dc16924dc">Derek Chauvin’s trial on murder charges</a>&nbsp;in George Floyd’s killing, sparked several days of demonstrations outside the Brooklyn Center police station marked by tear gas and clashes between protesters and police.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/death-of-daunte-wright-shootings-minnesota-minneapolis-arrests-ea3f946497f367662842bb08c1b8e242">Potter</a>&nbsp;was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kim-potter-guilty-manslaughter-death-of-daunte-wright-43e70645189bf61be64fc00534adf388">convicted in December of first- and second-degree manslaughter</a>&nbsp;in the April 11 killing. She’ll be sentenced only on the most serious charge of first-degree manslaughter, which carries a presumptive penalty of just over seven years in prison.

Prosecutor Matt Frank said Friday that he believed the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/death-of-daunte-wright-minnesota-minneapolis-bf13b1c196cb3badbc453c6083810beb">presumptive sentence is appropriate</a>, given the loss of life and Potter’s culpable negligence.

“His life mattered, and that life was taken,” Frank said. “His name is Daunte Wright. We have to say his name. He was not just a driver. He was a living human being. A life.”

Defense attorney Paul Engh told the judge that Wright’s death was “beyond tragic for everybody involved.” But, he added: “This was an unintentional crime. It was an accident. It was a mistake.”

Engh held up a box displaying what he said were among “thousands” of letters and cards of support for Potter.

“People took the time to write her,” Engh said. “This is unheard of for a defendant. I dare say no one in this room has ever seen anything like this.”

He urged the judge to sentence Potter to probation, saying sentencing guidelines are often not followed because they are too high for many defendants, including first-time offenders. He said Potter would be willing to meet with Wright’s family and to speak to police officers about Taser mixups.

If Potter is not sentenced to probation, then she should get a lower-than-usual sentence because Wright was the aggressor, Engh said. The testimony of other officers on the scene showed it was a dangerous situation because Wright was attempting to drive away, he said.

“This was an aggressive act. I don’t know how it couldn’t be an aggressive act,” said Engh, who also said Potter had the right to defend other officers and that she never should have been charged with first-degree manslaughter.

Evidence at Potter’s trial showed officers learned he had an outstanding warrant for a weapons possession charge and they tried to arrest him when he pulled away. Video showed Potter shouted several times that she was going to use her Taser on Wright, but she had her gun in her hand and fired one shot into his chest.

Potter has been at the state’s women’s prison in Shakopee since the guilty verdict. Her attorney said Friday that her mental and physical health has declined because she is isolated for her safety.

“If you send her to prison, you will harm her,” Engh said. “We are not in the business of harming defendants.”

Potter was also expected to make a statement.

Wright’s father and siblings earlier addressed the court to speak of their loss.

The mother of Wright’s son, Chyna Whitaker, said Friday that Wright would never have a chance to play ball with his son, or see him go to school.

“My son shouldn’t have to wear a ‘rest in peace’ shirt of his dad,” Whitaker said.

For someone with no criminal history, such as Potter, the state sentencing guidelines for first-degree manslaughter call for a penalty ranging from slightly more than six years to about 8 1/2 years in prison, with the presumptive sentence being just over seven years.

In Minnesota, it’s presumed that inmates who show good behavior will serve two-thirds of their sentence in prison and the rest on supervised release, commonly known as parole. That means if Potter gets the roughly seven-year presumptive sentence, she would serve about four years and nine months in custody, with the rest on parole.

Officer who pulled gun instead of Taser gets lesser prison sentence

DICKINSON COUNTY - A Chapman man with outstanding warrants from three counties was taken into custody Thursday evening after a brief chase.

A Dickinson County deputy who was aware of an outstanding warrant for Scott Lambert Leister, 47, Chapman, was conducting surveillance on Leister's residence when, at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday, the deputy saw Leister leave the property, traveling north on Oat Road in a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis reported this morning.

The deputy attempted to catch up to Leister, but he fled north on Oat Road to 2700 Avenue. Leister turned east onto 2700 Avenue, then south on Paint Road. At 2600 Avenue, he turned west and then turned south onto Oat Road, returning to his residence, the sheriff noted.

Leister then turned into a field access road at 2710 Oat Road and continued to flee into the pasture east of his residence. The deputy temporarily lost sight of the pickup, but when he caught up to the pickup, Leister had already fled on foot, according to the sheriff.

Additional Dickinson County Sheriff's Department units, as well as those from the Chapman Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol helped establish a perimeter around the property. The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office K-9 was on the scene, and two other K-9 units from the Kansas Highway Patrol arrived a bit later.

At the sheriff's department's request, a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter responded from Topeka. Additionally, the sheriff's department drone was deployed.

The Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter located a heat signature on the property behind a residence in the 1700 block of Old 40 Highway just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The sheriff's department drone was deployed to the area until officers searching on the ground arrived.

"A KHP K-9 team searched the area and located Leister hiding underneath a cedar tree. K-9 announcements were given but Leister refused to comply, Leister was subsequently bit by the K-9 and taken into custody," Davis noted in a news release.

Dickinson County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and examined Leister. The sheriff's department then transported Leister to Abilene Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries before he was booked into the Dickinson County Detention Facility.

According to Davis, Leister was arrested on an outstanding Dickinson County bond revocation warrant on original requested felony charges including possession of opiates, burglary, and criminal possession of a firearm. The bond amount on that warrant is $5,000.

Leister also has an outstanding Geary County warrant for failure to appear on felony fleeing and eluding and two counts of child endangerment, Davis noted. The bond amount on that warrant is $10,000.

Additionally, Leister had an outstanding warrant from Saline County for failure to appear on requested theft and criminal damage to property charges. There was no bond on that warrant, the sheriff noted.

In addition to the outstanding warrants, Leister was arrested on the following requested charges, Davis reported.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons become the fourth suspect arrested in connection with an assault at a Las Vegas nightclub that prompted the Feb. 6 arrest of New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara. 

Lammons turned himself in Thursday in Las Vegas and was briefly booked into the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of felony battery resulting in substantial bodily harm and conspiracy to commit battery, police said. 

Two other men, Darrin Young and Percy Harris, turned themselves in Monday and were booked on the same charges before posting bonds. Kamara was arrested Feb. 6 after he played in the NFL Pro Bowl at Allegiant Stadium.

Today in History - Feb. 17

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a carjacking and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police&nbsp; responded to a carjacking call near Harry and Hillside in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.. On arrival, they contacted a 59-year-old woman who reported two male suspects attempted to rob her of her purse and steal her vehicle. 

She said that one of the suspects produced a handgun and threatened to shoot her. She was able to get away and call 911, and the two men fled the scene in what was described as a dark color Chevy impala. She was also able to give police a tag number for the suspect vehicle.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., police were conducting follow-up when they located the vehicle near Merton and Seneca. Officers attempted to stop the car, but it refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle crashed into a stop sign at 31st and Euclid, where two suspects fled the vehicle on foot. The driver was taken into custody and identified as 38-year-old Zachary Province of Haysville. Police did not locate the passenger was not located. The vehicle they were had been stolen, according to Macy.

Province was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County jail on requested charges of aggravated weapons violation, possession of paraphernalia, flee and elude, driving while suspended.

April 19, 1954 ~ February 12, 2022 (age 67)

SALINA - Janie May Lamer, 67, passed away on February 12, 2022. She was born Janie May Arrington on April 19, 1954, in Salina, KS. She was a lifelong resident of Salina and graduated from Salina Central High School in 1972. She earned an associate degree from Cloud County Community College. 

She was united in marriage to Lowell Lamer on January 17, 1976. They recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

Janie had a love of reading and shared her love of books with many during her years she worked as a librarian at the Salina Public Library. She retired after more than 40 years of service in the children’s department. She could find any book anyone was looking for and also had a vast knowledge of the history of the library.

Janie also was an avid gardener who loved spending time in her flower gardens. She loved gardening with her family when her children were young, and after her children were grown, she and her husband shared their love of gardening together. Most of all she loved her children and grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Salina. Janie was a member of the Friends of the Salina Public Library and also of Mothers of Multiples.

Janie was preceded in death by her mothe, Mary Arrington. 

She is survived by her husband Lowell, and by her twin daughters Kimberly Bartel (Lance) and Stephanie Holston (Ben) both of Wichita, KS. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Candace and Bryson Britting, and Abby, Carson, Ethan, Ellie, and Charlotte Bartel, all of Wichita.

Janie will be deeply missed by her family and those who knew her. 

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday February 16, 2022, at Ryan Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Thursday February 17, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Ryan Mortuary.

TOPEKA — A coalition of Kansas faith leaders and education advocates 
are calling on lawmakers to reject legislation currently being drafted 
to ban or restrict teaching about U.S. racial history.

More than 50 people gathered Tuesday on the first floor of the 
Capitol in Topeka to rally against what they considered a concerted 
effort to dismantle diversity and inclusion initiatives at Kansas public
 schools. One such measure would establish a parental bill of rights, 
creating a series of transparency checks to ensure parents have 
knowledge of all material made available in school.

<a target="_blank" href="http://kslegislature.com/li/b2021_22/measures/hb2662/">House Bill 2662</a>
 also compromises the affirmative defense for schools and educators if 
somebody charges them with promoting material harmful to minors. The 
House K-12 Education Budget Committee is set for a hearing on the 
measure Wednesday.

“This conversation about race or critical theory, whatever the right 
is calling it, is being used as an excuse to undermine support for 
public schools,” said Rabbi Moti Rieber, executive director for Kansas 
Interfaith Action. “We need to reach out to kids from across different 
spectrums, bring them into the conversation and to center the experience
 of people not often centered in our history books.”

A handful of faith leaders, equal rights advocates and teachers 
joined Rieber to describe their view of the Kansas Legislature’s 
approach to education. The consensus was that careless laws are putting 
teachers in the crosshairs of angry parents and pushing some out of the 
field entirely.

Across the country, a discussion surrounding critical race theory — 
an academic framework analyzing the role of systemic racism in American 
society — has led to the passing of laws against its inclusion in 
curriculum, which advocates argue is a thinly veiled attack on all 
diversity policies. Members of the state board of education and local 
school boards have stated that critical race theory is not part of any 
Kansas curriculum.

Chloe
 Chaffin, a Washburn University student studying secondary English 
education, said she has always wanted to be a teacher. Stories of 
harassment over curriculum choices are the only thing holding her back 
and other young, aspiring teachers she has engaged with often feel 
similarly, she said.

“As I talk to my professors and students in my program, I often hear 
that our class sizes in the education program are getting smaller and 
smaller, that they aren’t able convince enough students to go into the 
profession, and I believe that bills such as these passing their way 
through the Legislature are a reason why,” Chaffin said.

Michael Rebne, a public school teacher and Roeland Park City Council 
member, said some legislators in the building were trying to villainize 
the teaching profession and that these efforts would hamper students’ 
chances for an equitable future.

“We need to help our students get to the children of this country in 
order to understand why it is so important to continue to fight for 
democracy and freedom,” Rebne said. “We’re here to tell the right-wing 
legislators inside this building that we will not carry their ignorance,
 racism and fear into our schools.”

As I watched the Super Bowl, it occurred to me this is a truly American event only Americans really get. It is a sporting event that is really a national holiday where we celebrate commercials and eat ourselves into oblivion. For most of us the game is the third attraction. Only in the United States would we use the last football game of the season for a reason to gorge ourselves on food we would normally not eat. As I thought about all of this it occurred to me, the biggest MVPs of the Super Bowl are really us, the farmers and ranchers who are responsible for this impressive spread. I know the MVP of the Super Bowl is generally a superstar quarterback who makes more money than any of us will ever see, but I would argue the men and women responsible for all the appetizers, chips and dips, and desserts are the true stars. We take food for granted. Sure, the pandemic helped make consumers aware of how important and fragile the food supply is, but most of the time we forget just how good we have it. That is because as farmers and ranchers we have done such a tremendous job of growing food and fiber that consumers have become accustomed to having an array of available sustenance anytime they want it. In the case of our Super Bowl parties, we can find food we didn’t even know we needed. What we are celebrating during the Super Bowl is not the best two teams of the NFL. What we are really celebrating is the abundance that American agriculture provides our great nation. We are celebrating the vast variety and abundance we all have grown to expect in the grocery store. Shelves and shelves with choices we often take for granted. I know most of us don’t do this for recognition, we are just doing our jobs. But do you know what? We are the best in the world at what we do. No other nation produces as much food or utilizes its resources as well as we do here in the United States. We may not be paid millions of dollars like the superstars we watch in the Super Bowl, but we are just as good. That is something to be proud of. We may never be the MVP of the big game or get a championship ring for what we do, but I do know one thing for sure. The Super Bowl would be just another game without the wings, sliders and other snacks. The commercials would be just more annoying breaks between the game if it were not for the meat and cheese trays, veggies, and cookies. Do you know what? Those of us who produce all that great food really are the MVPs. At least in my book we are.

INSIGHT: Full bowls and football

Today is Wednesday, Feb. 16, the 47th day of 2022. There are 318 days left in the year. 

On Feb. 16, 1959, Fidel Castro became premier of Cuba a month and a-half after the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista. 

In 1862, the Civil War Battle of Fort Donelson in Tennessee ended as some 12,000 Confederate soldiers surrendered; Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's victory earned him the moniker "Unconditional Surrender Grant." 

In 1918, Lithuania proclaimed its independence from the Russian Empire. (Lithuania, which was occupied by the Soviet Union, then Nazi Germany, then the Soviet Union again during World War II, renewed its independence in 1990).

In 1923, the burial chamber of King Tutankhamen's recently unearthed tomb was unsealed in Egypt by English archaeologist Howard Carter.

In 1945, American troops landed on the island of Corregidor in the Philippines during World War II.

In 2019, the Vatican announced that former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who served as archbishop of Washington, D.C., had been found guilty by the Vatican of sex abuse and had been defrocked; McCarrick was the highest-ranking churchman and the first cardinal to face that punishment as the church dealt with clerical sex abuse. 

Ten years ago: A federal judge in Detroit ordered life in prison for "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian who had tried to blow up a packed Northwest jetliner. New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, died of an apparent asthma attack in Syria while reporting on the uprising against its president; he was 43. Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter died in West Palm Beach, Florida, at age 57.

Five years ago: In the first full-length news conference of his presidency, Donald Trump denounced what he called the "criminal" leaks that took down his top national security adviser, Michael Flynn. Trump named Alexander Acosta as his new choice for labor secretary, a day after Andrew Puzder abruptly withdrew. Immigrants around the U.S. stayed home from work and school to demonstrate how important they were to America's economy, and many businesses closed in solidarity.

One year ago: A winter storm that left millions without power in record-breaking cold weather claimed more lives, including four family members who perished in a Houston-area house fire while using a fireplace to stay warm. FEMA opened its first COVID-19 mass vaccination sites, setting up in Los Angeles and Oakland as part of a stepped-up effort by the Biden administration to reach minority communities. Amy Cooper, the white woman who was arrested for calling 911 on a Black birdwatcher in New York's Central Park, had her criminal case thrown out after completing a diversionary counseling program.

Today in History - Feb. 16

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp;&nbsp;a shooting in the parking lot of a Dillons store arrested an 18-year-old from Oklahoma.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. on February 10, police responded to a shooting call at 21st and Maize Road. Wichita Fire Department personnel were at the Dillon’s store at that location when they located a a man identified as&nbsp;18-year-old Iman Foye of Muskogee, Oklahoma with a gunshot wound, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

Foye directed them to another victim, a 21-year-old man who was in the parking lot between two vehicles with multiple gunshot wounds.

Both Foye and the 21-year-old were transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. Foye was released from the hospital on Feb. 13 and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of aggravated robbery and criminal use of weapons.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 21-year-old male remains hospitalized.

Shortly after that, gunfire was exchanged between the two cars, and three men exited the cars. It was initially believed that three men fled into the neighborhood to the east, while one remained by the vehicles.However, it has since been discovered that only two fled into the neighborhood, and one remained by the vehicles, according to Davidson. Foye&nbsp; is no longer in custody.
