Salina Public Schools has again determined a library book recently challenged,&nbsp;All Boys Aren’t Blue, by George M. Johnson, will remain on the shelf.

Consistent with board policy, a district-wide appeal committee was formed after a second appeal was filed. After reading and reviewing the book, the committee determined the book should remain in the library. In the report, the committee listed several attributes that contributed to its decision including:

●Exploration of self-acceptance when you don’t feel you belong or are marginalized by society.

●Examination of the dynamics of an imperfect family and how to find a network of support and safety.

●Access to a memoir that includes themes of reassurance during a formative time of sexual development and self-doubt.

While the committee agreed that some passages in the book could cause concern for some individuals, the individual concerns should not result in prohibiting access for all students. The United States Supreme Court has expressly held that local school boards may not remove books from school library shelves simply because they dislike the ideas contained in the books.*

In consideration of parent concerns, the committee discussed ways parents/guardians could provide oversight for their own student. Currently, schools assign students a Destiny account, which is a library management system that records what material the student checks out. Students can access that account from home, allowing a parent to monitor what their student has checked out and providing an opportunity for family discussion.

The committee acknowledged more communication to parents and guardians about these processes would be helpful for those who wish to discuss with their students what they are reading and checking out from the school library. Specifically, information about media center processes should be provided annually during online enrollment and at least one time in school newsletters.

Another recommendation was the development of a process so that parents and guardians can notify the school of their oversight preference. This would allow a concerned parent or guardian to put “parental permission” in place prior to their student checking out a book.

The district’s process to manage any challenges to textbooks and instructional materials is clear**. The first step is a meeting between the concerned individual, the school principal and the library media specialist. The next step is a building review committee.

This committee concluded the book remain in the library, after which a request for a second appeal was received. A district-wide appeal committee was formed to review the book as the second level of appeal. That committee included the principal, the deputy superintendent, the library media specialist, the library media specialist overseer, a counselor, three teachers and three citizens.

Carl Robert Segerhammar was born on November 7, 1946, in Belleville, Kansas, to Carl Warren &amp; Evelyn (Tornquist) Segerhammar. Carl grew up in Kackley, Kansas, and attended Kackley Grade School up to the 8th grade. He then attended and graduated from Courtland High School, class of 1964.

Following high school, Carl enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following deployment to Vietnam, Carl was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal. During his years in the Vietnam War, Carl worked as a teletype operator.

Carl was united in marriage to Sharon Phillips on February 8th, 1969, in Marysville, Kansas, and to this union of over 50 years, two sons were born.

Carl worked as a sheriff’s deputy in Lyons County, Kansas, then a salesman for Moormon Feed Co. He also worked in the training department at Wolf Creek Power Plant in Burlington, Kansas. Carl and his family then traveled overseas to work for Bouygues – Blount in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This was a joint venture between a&nbsp;French and American company, contracted to build King Saud University. When he returned to the United States, Carl worked for Manna Pro Feed Company as an equine specialist covering 19 states.

Upon retirement, Carl stayed busy tending to his sheep herd in Kackley, Kansas, and farming with Lance Hedstrom. One of Carl’s many hobbies utilized his “gift of gab” and auctioneering skills to help various organizations with their charitable sales. In addition, Carl worked part time for Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home.

He was a lifelong member of the Ada Lutheran Church. Carl was also a member of the Pope’s People singing group, Courtland Masonic Lodge #211 A.F. &amp; A.M., ISIS Shrine Temple of Salina, the Republic County Farm Bureau Association, Scandia American Legion Albert Issacson - James Larson Post #193, Marine Corps League, Kansas Sheep Association, Courtland Arts Council, and Cloud County Community College Ag Advisory Board. &nbsp;

Carl passed away on April 4th, 2022, at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 28 days.

He is preceded in death by his parents Carl Warren and Evelyn Segerhammar, son Kyle Warren Segerhammar in 1997 and brother Paul Warren Segerhammar.

He is survived by and will be forever remembered by his wife Sharon of Courtland, Kansas; son Todd Robert Segerhammar of Concordia, Kansas; grandson Bradley Barfield of Tennessee, grandsons Logan and Luke Barfield of Georgia, sister Ann Ward and her husband Dennis of Augusta, Kansas; brother-in-law Lonnie Phillips and his wife Carol of Marysville, Kansas; brother-in-law Gary Phillips and his wife Sharon of Marysville, Kansas; many nieces and nephews, and a community of friends.

Memorial Services will be Tuesday, April 12th, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at the Ada Lutheran Church, rural Courtland, Kansas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Friends may sign Carl’s book on Monday, April 11th, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, Kansas.

I’ve been wanting to start my own small business for years. The only problem has been my current job. I make good money, but I also put in a lot of hours. About a month ago, I came up with an idea I think would be really successful. How do you feel about me handling the books of this new business, and generally overseeing things, but hiring a manager to handle the day-to-day operation?

I don’t like this idea very much. In fact, I hate it. If your idea is to crunch a few numbers, and stop by once in a while just to make an appearance, then I’d advise against the whole idea.

The big problem with your plan is that you are only a small part of the equation, when it’s supposed to be&nbsp;your&nbsp;business.

In one survey by&nbsp;Forbes.com, several successful entrepreneurs were asked how many hours per week they worked. Not one said less than 50, and the majority put in closer to 70 or 80 hours a week. While the latter may not be feasible if you’re already working a full-time job, the idea is the same. You have to love what you’re doing, and you must be willing to put in the time and effort to make it work.

When it comes to being a successful entrepreneur,&nbsp;you&nbsp;are the ideas.&nbsp;You&nbsp;are the passion, the vision, the energy and the desire to get things done and grow the business. If you don’t have the drive to be all those things, you’re better off not doing it at all. You’d have a better chance of making something work if you bought an existing business with a manager already in place.

I’m sorry, Temple. But in my mind, your idea—as it stands now—is a big disappointment just waiting to happen.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after an unusual incident at a Topeka home.

Just after 7:30p.m. Tuesday,&nbsp;&nbsp;the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received information regarding an incident in the 3800 block of North Kansas Avenue, according to Lt. Manual Munoz.

The victim reported that 46-year-old James O. Meredith Jr. of Topeka drove a white 1995 Chevrolet Kodiak tow truck into his residence causing significant damage. 

Meredith then broke a window and climbed inside the residence where a physical altercation ensued. Meredith stole a firearm and fled the scene.

Through the investigation, information was gathered and Meredith was located in the 4500 block of NW Westgate Road. He was placed into custody and interviewed by detectives at the Law Enforcement Center.

Meredith was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections and on requested charges of aggravated battery, theft of a firearm, criminal damage and criminal possession of a weapon by a felon.

Meredith and the 45-year-old male victim are known to each other, according to Munoz.

PLAINVILLE&nbsp;— Stephanie Grisham has the distinction of serving as a White House press secretary who never held a press conference.

And who ultimately turned on the former chief executive who brought her into the West Wing.

Now
 she lives in a deep-red part of west-central Kansas — surrounded by 
Americans where Donald Trump remains a political savior and from where 
she’s coordinating with Republicans across the country determined that 
he never return to the Oval Office.

“She hides in plain sight here,” says Lauren Mack, veterinarian to the town of about 1,750 people.

Six
 years ago, she viewed the New York real estate man and reality TV star 
the same way as so many of her new Midwestern neighbors do today. She 
saw him as a straight-shooting antidote capable of draining a swamp of 
graft and self-dealing in Washington.

Grisham became determined to
 make America great again by working for Trump’s 2016 presidential 
campaign. She rose high enough in the campaign that after Trump was 
elected, she became First Lady Melania Trump’s spokeswoman.

And late in the administration, she took over the job as the president’s press secretary.

But
 her view from inside the Trump White House made her lose faith. And 
when, during the Jan. 6 insurrection, Melania Trump refused to OK a 
tweet condemning the violence on Capitol Hill, Grisham quit.

Like a handful of other Trump acolytes-turned-antagonists, she wrote a
 book. It was not kind to the man who was once her hero. It cast Trump 
as an angry man-child with a special love of dictators.

Grisham 
has become one of the more visible Republicans fighting against Trump, 
appearing on national TV and working with other disaffected former Trump
 staffers on a plan to make sure her former boss stays out of public 
office.

She’s doing that from an old house in the ranching-and-oil town Plainville in a county where Trump won 86% of the vote in 2020.

“I’ve
 had absolutely no problems,” Grisham said. “Everybody’s kind to me. 
There are a couple of people who, I think, give me looks that aren’t 
super pleasant. But well, you know, maybe they’re just having a bad 
day.”

People who aren’t immediately recognizable in Plainville 
stand out. Some don’t know who Grisham is. For a lot of people in 
Plainville, the most important thing is that a relatively young person 
(Grisham is 45) has moved to this shrinking town and fixed up an old 
house.

Others, though, call Grisham a traitor, someone who double-crossed Trump to make a buck. And they adore Donald Trump.

“He’s it,” said Candace Rachel, long-time editor of the Plainville Times. “A lot of people in this town think he’s the savior.”

Grisham
 said it’s unlikely she would ever have set foot in the place if her 
sister hadn’t married a Plainville native. But Grisham came out for a 
visit, and wound up staying for three weeks.

“We would sit on the patio and it’s so quiet,” recalls Grisham. “And at night you can see all the stars.”

That
 was during the pandemic lockdown, when Grisham was working remotely 
anyway. She would steal away from Washington for long visits to 
Plainville and eventually bought a house across the street from her 
sister’s place.

“It was just this really peaceful place that I thought would be a perfect place to kind of get over Trumpworld,” Grisham said.

After she resigned on the day of the Capitol insurrection, Grisham’s 
Plainville place became the base for writing her book, “I’ll Take Your 
Questions Now.” In it, she calls the Trump administration a “clown car 
on fire running full speed into a warehouse full of fireworks” and 
chronicles childish, needy and dishonest behavior on the part of her 
former boss.

“I kept thinking like, ‘Oh, what’s going to happen 
here?’” Grisham said. “This is a very big Second Amendment part of the 
country and, I’m not going to lie, I thought, ‘Should I learn to shoot a
 gun myself? Am I going to need protection?’”

The answer was no. 
The book came out, but it’s hard to find anyone in Plainville who’s 
actually read it. And Grisham said she tends to keep her ideas about 
Trump to herself when she’s out around town.

That may change 
because Grisham feels a special responsibility to tell her fellow 
pro-gun, anti-immigrant neighbors that Trump is not the best guy to get 
the job done.

“He’s not your savior and he’s not looking out for 
you. And I am saying that as somebody who really thought he was,” she 
said. “I’ve got to try to figure out a way to express that to people.”

She wants to craft a message that respects that devotion, rather than ridiculing it.

“He’s
 the ultimate con man,” Grisham said. “I … feel the responsibility to 
try to talk to the people I talk to all the time who think he's amazing.
 And I wanna say, ‘I understand that. I thought he was amazing.” But I 
promise you, he’s not in your corner. He’s in Donald Trump’s corner. 
Period.”

visit, and wound up staying for three weeks.“We would sit on the patio and it’s so quiet,” recalls Grisham. “And at night you can see all the stars.”That
 was during the pandemic lockdown, when Grisham was working remotely 
anyway. She would steal away from Washington for long visits to 
Plainville and eventually bought a house across the street from her 
sister’s place.“It was just this really peaceful place that I thought would be a perfect place to kind of get over Trumpworld,” Grisham said.<figure>

 </figure>After she resigned on the day of the Capitol insurrection, Grisham’s 
Plainville place became the base for writing her book, “I’ll Take Your 
Questions Now.” In it, she calls the Trump administration a “clown car 
on fire running full speed into a warehouse full of fireworks” and 
chronicles childish, needy and dishonest behavior on the part of her 
former boss.“I kept thinking like, ‘Oh, what’s going to happen 
here?’” Grisham said. “This is a very big Second Amendment part of the 
country and, I’m not going to lie, I thought, ‘Should I learn to shoot a
 gun myself? Am I going to need protection?’”The answer was no. 
The book came out, but it’s hard to find anyone in Plainville who’s 
actually read it. And Grisham said she tends to keep her ideas about 
Trump to herself when she’s out around town.That may change 
because Grisham feels a special responsibility to tell her fellow 
pro-gun, anti-immigrant neighbors that Trump is not the best guy to get 
the job done.“He’s not your savior and he’s not looking out for 
you. And I am saying that as somebody who really thought he was,” she 
said. “I’ve got to try to figure out a way to express that to people.”She wants to craft a message that respects that devotion, rather than ridiculing it.“He’s
 the ultimate con man,” Grisham said. “I … feel the responsibility to 
try to talk to the people I talk to all the time who think he's amazing.
 And I wanna say, ‘I understand that. I thought he was amazing.” But I 
promise you, he’s not in your corner. He’s in Donald Trump’s corner. 
Period.”

I recently traveled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with the Kansas Ag and Rural Leaders (KARL) program. Our trip included unique farm tours like a camel dairy, falcon hospital and the oldest irrigation district in the world. We experienced local traditions and culture by visiting museums, a desert oasis, a camel race training facility, a livestock market, a palace and the grand mosque. However, the real reason people visit UAE is to see Dubai. Dubai’s leaders seem to have committed to the “if you build it, they will come” ideal popularized in “Field of Dreams.” Their vision for Dubai has been to replace oil revenue that will eventually dwindle with money from tourism, business and the financial sectors. They are creating a center of business for the Middle East and the world; a “City of Dreams.” Dubai had been described by many former travelers as the Las Vegas of the Middle East. I expected the Burj Khalifa (currently the world’s tallest building) and the Palm (a manmade island complex) would have a row of sky scrapers connecting the two areas and the city might feel like Chicago or Los Angeles. My mind was not prepared for what the city actually looks like. Everything is new and really tall; high-rise buildings as far as the eye can see. When you emerge from a cluster of them, you can see another cluster of 10 to 20 a few miles away in any direction except downtown, which is more like 100 to 200 high-rise buildings. The city is filled with brand new metro lines, shopping malls, tourist attractions and residential communities. Dubai is a modern city of stunning architecture and the latest technology. Our tour guide joked that Emiratis’ favorite word is ‘est. They have the tallest building, largest shopping mall, deepest swimming pool, largest dancing fountain, highest Ferris wheel. The list goes longer and makes me think Guinness Book of World Records probably has an office there purely for convenience. The most impressive part is almost none of it existed 20 years ago. Many attractions didn’t exist 10 years ago as lots of the projects were fast tracked to prepare for the World Expo, which was originally scheduled for 2020 and delayed a year because of COVID. The six-month Expo ended March 31 and was expected to bring 25 million visitors to see the 192 country pavilions focusing on themes of sustainability, mobility and opportunity. If you are picturing the state fair, this expo was about 20 times bigger without the animals, and even though we visited at the end of month six, the place felt fresh; bathrooms were clean, pavilions and facilities were in good working order, and there were no visible signs of staff packing-up. The same feel of quality and pride could be felt throughout all the attractions we saw. Dubai is a city of dreams. It is the manifestation of leader’s vision and ability to motivate others to join in creating something big, something people all over the world will talk about and want to see for themselves. People ignore their field of dreams because it seems too big. Dreams don’t happen overnight. Small steps, like having a clear vision or creating things that you can be proud of, are what create the momentum to move big dreams forward. The tallest building in the most extravagant city in the world was what one man saw when he looked across the barren desert. Just imagine what you can make of the world around you.

INSIGHT: The City of Dreams

The Friends of the Salina Public Library's Spectacular Spring Book Sale is coming up this weekend.

The used book sale benefits the organization, which is a volunteer, board-guided, membership organization that acts as a booster club for the library. Some Friends’ activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplying equipment/materials for the CLASS program, and allocating scholarships for teen library volunteers.

“We are excited to be able to raise funds to assist with Summer Reading Programs at the Library,” said Mary Shaffer, president of the Friends Advisory Board.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, used booksale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, romance, as well as general fiction for adults and children. Similar to past sales, we will also offer audio books, music CDs, movies, and games. A special section for this sale includes hundreds of large print books.”

The book sale is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday in the Youth Services area downstairs in the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

Laura Rhodenbaugh, Friends treasurer added, “Our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill big bags (provided by Brown’s Shoes) with reading and listening materials for just $5 a bag.”

Additionally, Friends of the Salina Public Library members will get "first dibs" access to the items being sold from 4:30-7 p.m. Friday.

Not a Friends member? Library card holders can sign up for Friends membership at the adult circulation desk whenever the library is open. Additionally, memberships will be available at the door of the Friday Night Friends Preview. The cost is $10 per year for an individual membership and $25 per year for a family membership. 

An additional benefit of Friends of the Salina Public Library membership is that Friends do not pay fines on overdue library materials, according to information from the organization.

Friends of Salina Public Library spring book sale this weekend

MONTOGMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects on drug charges after a traffic stop.

On March 30, sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic stop on US 169 highway between 15th Street and Osage Street in Coffeyville, according to Sheriff Ron Wade. 

Law Enforcement Officials observed three vehicles, who were traveling north bound, fail to signal when changing lanes.  Deputies conducted traffic stops on all three vehicles and learned that all three vehicles were traveling together, and all three drivers were related. 

 A K9 handler with Coffeyville Police Department arrived on scene and advised one of the drivers that he was going to use his Police Service Dog (PSD) to conduct a free air sniff around the outside of the vehicle they were driving. 

 The driver, who was later identified as 62-year-old James Field of Tulsa, Oklahoma, told the K9 Handler there was a large amount of marijuana inside of his vehicle. 

 Deputies searched Field’s vehicle and located five 50-gallon trash bags full of suspected marijuana covered by a tarp in the back of Field’s vehicle.  Deputies also located a handgun inside Field’s vehicle. 

 During the investigation, deputies developed enough evidence to place the other two drivers, 30-year-old Paul Dumitrache of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 53-year-old Gabriela Eastman of Tulsa, Oklahoma and one passenger 30-year-old Vania Cisneros of Tulsa, Oklahoma in custody. 

 All subjects were transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and all three vehicles were transported to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and secured for search warrants. 

Detectives with MGSO and Agents with Kansas Bureau of Investigation Agents served the search warrants on the three vehicles and located additional evidence in all three vehicles, including marijuana, a second handgun, and over $24,000.00 cash. 

 Detectives and Agents determined the weight of marijuana to be 93 pounds with a street value of $93,000.00. 

 Field and Dumitrache were booked into DOC on requested charges that include distribute certain hallucinogenic greater than 1 kilogram.• possession of drug paraphernalia w/intent to manufacture/plant/cultivate controlled substance.• no drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substance. • criminal use of weapons; possession of firearm by person addicted/use of a controlled substance. 

  Eastman and Cisneros were booked into DOC on requested charges that include Distribute certain hallucinogenic greater than 1 kilogram.• Possession of drug paraphernalia w/intent to manufacture/plant/cultivate controlled substance. • No drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substance.

The driver, who was later identified as 62-year-old James Field of Tulsa, Oklahoma, told the K9 Handler there was a large amount of marijuana inside of his vehicle. Deputies searched Field’s vehicle and located five 50-gallon trash bags full of suspected marijuana covered by a tarp in the back of Field’s vehicle. Deputies also located a handgun inside Field’s vehicle. During the investigation, deputies developed enough evidence to place the other two drivers, 30-year-old Paul Dumitrache of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 53-year-old Gabriela Eastman of Tulsa, Oklahoma and one passenger 30-year-old Vania Cisneros of Tulsa, Oklahoma in custody. All subjects were transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and all three vehicles were transported to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and secured for search warrants. Detectives with MGSO and Agents with Kansas Bureau of Investigation Agents served the search warrants on the three vehicles and located additional evidence in all three vehicles, including marijuana, a second handgun, and over $24,000.00 cash. Detectives and Agents determined the weight of marijuana to be 93 pounds with a street value of $93,000.00. Field and Dumitrache were booked into DOC on requested charges that include distribute certain hallucinogenic greater than 1 kilogram.• possession of drug paraphernalia w/intent to manufacture/plant/cultivate controlled substance.• no drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substance. • criminal use of weapons; possession of firearm by person addicted/use of a controlled substance. Kan. deputies find 93 pounds of pot, guns and $24,000 cash

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects for drug trafficking after a traffic stop.

On March 28, a police detective assigned to the DEA Task Force was conducting drug interdiction activities on the KS Turnpike in South Wichita when he stopped a Cadillac Escalade exiting the Turnpike onto 47th Street South, according to a media release.

The vehicle was occupied by 35-year-old Victor Nunez, 35-year-old Huber Arzete and a 12-year-old boy off of Youngtown, Arizona.

 Suspecting possible drug trafficking, a search was conducted which resulted in the seizure of approximately 7,000 illicit fentanyl pills believed to have originated in Mexico, bound for Missouri.

Both Nunez and Arzete were booked into the Sedgwick County Jail with a hold for the DEA in requested charges of&nbsp;drug possession and distribution&nbsp;

“Our true and unsung heroes of this nation are these families,” said 
Wiggins, a three-star general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division at
 Fort Riley. “Sadly, as a commander I have had to knock on a door to 
deliver the tragic news of a fallen loved one and have executed one of 
our nation’s most sacred duties and honored a fallen comrade by 
presenting a loved one on bended knee our nation’s folded flag on behalf
 of a grateful nation.”

Kelly said momentum for the Gold Star monument picked up steam when 
she met in 2020 with&nbsp;Hershel “Woody” Williams, a retired U.S. Marine 
Corps warrant officer and the only living Medal of Honor recipient from 
World War II. Williams challenged the governor to work toward 
establishment of the Gold Star Families Monument on Statehouse grounds.

The legislation prohibited use of public funds for creation or construction of the monument to Gold Star families.

Kelly signs law authorizing Gold Star memorial at Kan. Capitol

A Salina man has been arrested on numerous requested charges in connection to alleged incidents with a 10-year-old girl.

On Sunday, the Bennington girl was in the bathroom of a residence in the 400 block of E. Mulberry Street in Salina when she found on a shelf a cellphone with a photo of her on it, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The girl regularly stays at that residence, he said.

The girl also found other photos of herself on the cellphone. Forrester said the cellphone belongs to Caden Starmer, 20, of Salina. The girl told the person whose residence she was in about the photos and the resident confronted Starmer.
