On May 20, 1956, the United States exploded the first airborne hydrogen bomb over Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.

In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, which was intended to encourage settlements west of the Mississippi River by making federal land available for farming.

Today in History - May 20

College can be a lot of things—fun, exciting, challenging, exhausting, rewarding—but “cheap” doesn’t usually make the list. And if you’re in college right now, or you will be soon, I want you to be able to save as much money as humanly possible so you can cash flow your degree and graduate with a future that does&nbsp;not&nbsp;include making student loan payments (yes, that really is possible).

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to work a full-time job or eat ramen noodles 24/7 in order to graduate debt-free. There are plenty of simple, practical ways you can save big on college expenses.&nbsp;&nbsp;

You have to live, right? But when you’re a college student, housing can mean anything from a small apartment you share with roommates to a luxury dorm with a hot tub and a view of the city skyline. Let’s keep this budget-friendly.

Okay, y’all. I get it. You’re probably ready to get out of the house and bask in your new freedom, and living at home might be the&nbsp;last&nbsp;thing you want to do. And obviously, living at home won’t be an option for everyone. But just think about not having to pay thousands of dollars per year on rent, utility bills or food. All that extra money in your bank account will be totally worth it.

Compare the costs of living on versus off campus

Renting an apartment isn’t always going to be cheaper than living on campus, and living on campus isn’t always going to be cheaper than renting. You have to look at all the options available at your school and in the surrounding area to see what’s most affordable.

If you rent an apartment, having a roommate (or two or three) will cut your expenses way down. Make sure your landlord has approved each individual roommate, and that they all sign the lease so you won’t be left hanging financially if one of them moves out.

Food—another one of those things you can’t live without. But you&nbsp;can&nbsp;live without daily avocado toast. You just have to&nbsp;be wise about your food choices.

You can save a ton if you go in on groceries, especially if you buy in bulk. You could even grocery shop and cook together to get some solid roommate bonding time.

Be strategic about eating out&nbsp;

It’s okay to go out with your friends every once in a while, but when you’re constantly getting waffles at 2 a.m. on impulse, it really starts to add up. Budget the amount of money you can spend on eating out every month.

Meal plan costs can vary depending on your school––cheaper ones can be about $1,000 per semester, but some can be three times that (or more). Some colleges might make you get a meal plan for your freshman year, so if you have to have one, make sure you actually use it. But if you&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;have to have one,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/meal-planner" target="_blank">meal prepping</a>&nbsp;and making food from scratch are your new best friends.

How to save money on tuition and supplies

This is one of the biggest and most intimidating categories for college students. But don’t stress, y’all––I got you.

It’s crazy how much you can save just by getting your textbooks from Amazon or a used bookstore instead of the campus bookstore. You probably won’t find&nbsp;all&nbsp;your required reading at those cheaper places, but even if you do have to use the campus bookstore, they’ll usually give you the option to rent instead of buy. Go with renting.

Take classes at a community college first

You can save a lot on tuition by getting all your general education requirements out of the way at a community college before heading to your school of choice, because the price difference is insane. A year of tuition at a private is school is, on average, more than&nbsp;nine times&nbsp;the cost of a year of tuition at a community college.

The average tuition at a public, in-state school is $9,349 per year, and the average tuition at a public, out-of-state school is $27,023 per year.<a href="https://educationdata.org/average-cost-of-college" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;That’s a yearly difference of more than $17,000! If it’s an out-of-state&nbsp;private&nbsp;college, the tuition skyrockets even more.

It’s kind of a no-brainer: If you&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/saving/how-to-find-scholarships" target="_blank">find scholarships</a>, you won’t have to worry as much about tuition costs (and some scholarships even cover your books, food and housing).&nbsp;Back when I was headed to college, my family wasn’t able to help me with funds, so I treated applying for scholarships like a part-time job—and it seriously paid off. I know it’s a lot of hard work, but I promise it will make a huge difference.

Not everyone remembers to factor this into their college budget, especially if they know they’re going to be living on campus and walking a lot. But the truth is, you’ll need to get to places off campus at some point, so it’s smart to think about this stuff ahead of time.

Nobody likes spending money on gas. With bikes, you don’t have to. Enough said.

This could be anything from the bus system to subways to rideshare services. Depending on how often you use public transportation, you might want to buy passes instead of individual tickets––it costs more up front, but it will help you save in the long run.

And because I&nbsp;really&nbsp;want you to graduate with cash in your bank account, I’m going to give you a couple extra tips:

Have a part-time job or side hustle

Don’t underestimate the effect that a few babysitting or dog-walking jobs per week can have on your savings. For a steadier income, a part-time job (no more than 15–20 hours per week) is a great idea too.

Find all the student discounts and coupons you can

And if you’re in college right now, or you will be soon, I want you to be able to save as much money as humanly possible so you can cash flow your degree and graduate with a future that does&nbsp;not&nbsp;include making student loan payments (yes, that really is possible). Here’s the good news: You don’t have to work a full-time job or eat ramen noodles 24/7 in order to graduate debt-free. There are plenty of simple, practical ways you can save big on college expenses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>How to save money on housing in college</h2>You have to live, right? But when you’re a college student, housing can mean anything from a small apartment you share with roommates to a luxury dorm with a hot tub and a view of the city skyline. Let’s keep this budget-friendly.Live at home if you canOkay, y’all. I get it. You’re probably ready to get out of the house and bask in your new freedom, and living at home might be the&nbsp;last&nbsp;thing you want to do. And obviously, living at home won’t be an option for everyone. But just think about not having to pay thousands of dollars per year on rent, utility bills or food. All that extra money in your bank account will be totally worth it.Compare the costs of living on versus off campusRenting an apartment isn’t always going to be cheaper than living on campus, and living on campus isn’t always going to be cheaper than renting. You have to look at all the options available at your school and in the surrounding area to see what’s most affordable.Find a roommateIf you rent an apartment, having a roommate (or two or three) will cut your expenses way down. Make sure your landlord has approved each individual roommate, and that they all sign the lease so you won’t be left hanging financially if one of them moves out.How to Save Money on FoodFood—another one of those things you can’t live without. But you&nbsp;can&nbsp;live without daily avocado toast. You just have to&nbsp;be wise about your food choices.Split food costs with roommatesYou can save a ton if you go in on groceries, especially if you buy in bulk. You could even grocery shop and cook together to get some solid roommate bonding time.Be strategic about eating out&nbsp;It’s okay to go out with your friends every once in a while, but when you’re constantly getting waffles at 2 a.m. on impulse, it really starts to add up. Budget the amount of money you can spend on eating out every month.Be smart about your meal planMeal plan costs can vary depending on your school––cheaper ones can be about $1,000 per semester, but some can be three times that (or more). Some colleges might make you get a meal plan for your freshman year, so if you have to have one, make sure you actually use it. But if you&nbsp;don’t&nbsp;have to have one,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/meal-planner" target="_blank">meal prepping</a>&nbsp;and making food from scratch are your new best friends.<h2>How to save money on tuition and supplies</h2>This is one of the biggest and most intimidating categories for college students. But don’t stress, y’all––I got you.Buy used booksIt’s crazy how much you can save just by getting your textbooks from Amazon or a used bookstore instead of the campus bookstore. You probably won’t find&nbsp;all&nbsp;your required reading at those cheaper places, but even if you do have to use the campus bookstore, they’ll usually give you the option to rent instead of buy. Go with renting.Take classes at a community college firstYou can save a lot on tuition by getting all your general education requirements out of the way at a community college before heading to your school of choice, because the price difference is insane. A year of tuition at a private is school is, on average, more than&nbsp;nine times&nbsp;the cost of a year of tuition at a community college.Go to an in-state schoolThe average tuition at a public, in-state school is $9,349 per year, and the average tuition at a public, out-of-state school is $27,023 per year.<a href="https://educationdata.org/average-cost-of-college" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;That’s a yearly difference of more than $17,000! If it’s an out-of-state&nbsp;private&nbsp;college, the tuition skyrockets even more.Apply for scholarshipsIt’s kind of a no-brainer: If you&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/saving/how-to-find-scholarships" target="_blank">find scholarships</a>, you won’t have to worry as much about tuition costs (and some scholarships even cover your books, food and housing).&nbsp;Back when I was headed to college, my family wasn’t able to help me with funds, so I treated applying for scholarships like a part-time job—and it seriously paid off. I know it’s a lot of hard work, but I promise it will make a huge difference.<h2>How to save money on transportation</h2>Not everyone remembers to factor this into their college budget, especially if they know they’re going to be living on campus and walking a lot. But the truth is, you’ll need to get to places off campus at some point, so it’s smart to think about this stuff ahead of time.Ride a bikeNobody likes spending money on gas. With bikes, you don’t have to. Enough said.Use public transportationThis could be anything from the bus system to subways to rideshare services. Depending on how often you use public transportation, you might want to buy passes instead of individual tickets––it costs more up front, but it will help you save in the long run.<h2>Bonus money-saving tips in college</h2>And because I&nbsp;really&nbsp;want you to graduate with cash in your bank account, I’m going to give you a couple extra tips:Have a part-time job or side hustleDon’t underestimate the effect that a few babysitting or dog-walking jobs per week can have on your savings. On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of England's King Henry VIII, was beheaded after being convicted of adultery.

In 1780, a mysterious darkness enveloped much of New England and part of Canada in the early afternoon.

In 1913, California Gov. Hiram Johnson signed the Webb-Hartley Law prohibiting "aliens ineligible to citizenship" from owning farm land, a measure targeting Asian immigrants, particularly Japanese.

In 1920, ten people were killed in a gun battle between coal miners, who were led by a local police chief, and a group of private security guards hired to evict them for joining a union in Matewan, a small "company town" in West Virginia.

Board member invokes Bible verse to seek ouster of ‘Hate U Give’

TOPEKA — The Shawnee Heights 
school board voted to accept recommendations of a district review 
committee and continue making available to students five books targeted 
for removal by community members.

The books about racism, gender and personal relationships were 
brought into question because individuals outside the district, 
including a Republican state senator from Topeka, thought the content 
was inappropriate for students in the public school. Some of the books 
were on Shawnee Heights’ library shelves, while others were part of the 
district’s classroom curriculum.

Three of the five books challenged in Shawnee Heights were among the 
top 10 censored school books in the United States in 2021, according to 
the American Library Association’s office of intellectual freedom.

Shawnee Heights board member Christina Flaming took exception to “The
 Hate U Give,” the 2017 young adult novel by Angie Thomas inspired by 
the Black Lives Matter movement. The narrator is Starr Carter, a 
16-year-old Black girl from a poor neighborhood who attended a 
predominantly white private school. The story involved Carter’s reaction
 to shooting of her childhood friend by a white police officer.

During the school board meeting Tuesday night, Flaming questioned 
legitimacy of the book’s depiction of a white officer shooting a Black 
boy. She said statistics proved there was more Black-on-Black violence 
than white-on-Black violence in the United States.

She also registered opposition to the book because the central 
character’s father failed as a role model. She said he didn’t possess 
family leadership skills necessary to move his wife and children to a 
more affluent neighborhood.

“I’m a biblical person. There’s a verse that talks about the dog 
returns to its vomit,” Flaming said. “To me, the overall theme was that 
dad could not leave the negative culture that he had in that 
neighborhood to get his family off to a better culture.”

The school board voted 6-1 to retain “Hate U Give” on the high school
 library’s shelf and to keep it as a reading option in a ninth-grade 
class.

Board member Jason Schulz defended retention of the book despite his 
personal challenge with the subject matter and a writing style that he 
viewed as harsh.

“It’s meant to make you think,” he said. “It’s meant to challenge what you think you know.”

In other action, the school board accepted the review committee’s 
recommendation to continue use in the district of “Not My Idea: A Book 
About Whiteness.” The novel by Anastasia Higginbotham is about white 
supremacy in the United States.

The board unanimously agreed to keep on school shelves “Beyond the 
Gender Binary” written by Alok Vaid-Menon, a gender-nonconforming artist
 who defined gender as a malleable form of expression.

Board members likewise retained for student consumption “All Boys 
Aren’t Blue” by journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George Johnson. This 
young-adult memoir weaved together disappointments and triumphs faced by
 Black queer boys.

Rocky Busenitz, the school board’s president, said he was convinced 
the district ought to place “All Boys Aren’t Blue” beyond reach of 
Shawnee Heights students. He lost the vote 5-2.

Busenitz said the initial 200 pages of Johnson’s book was 
well-written, but subsequent sections undermined the book by 
inappropriately addressing explicit touching, oral sex and pornography 
He was particularly disturbed by an example of sexting.

“That’s not an activity or behavior we want to model or encourage,” Busenitz said. “We have an issue with that already.”

The school board voted 4-3 to continue making available the 
autobiography “Gender Queer: A Memoir.” It’s a 2019 book by Maia Kobabe.
 The district’s review committee split three ways, with two members 
voting to retain it, two urging it be restricted to students in 11th 
grade or higher and two members proposing it be removed.

Only four students in the district have checked out Kobabe’s book since it was acquired by the district in November 2019.

In April, Kansas state Sen. Rick Kloos, R-Topeka, insisted the 
Shawnee Heights superintendent unilaterally block access to “Gender 
Queer.” Kloos, who operates a Topeka thrift store and church known as 
God’s Storehouse, said he prayed the district would promptly withdraw 
the book chronicling a journey of self-identity, adolescent crushes, 
coming out to family and bonding with friends over erotic fiction.

Flaming, a board member opposed to retention of “Gender Queer,” said 
exploration of intercourse, sodomy, masturbation and other behaviors 
could be a violation of state law given Shawnee Heights’ community 
standards of what defined as patently offensive. Busenitz, the school 
board’s president, agreed with her, because he considered graphic 
illustrations in the book were obscene.

“It just seems to me this pushes even our Kansas state law. With that in mind, I will say remove the book,” Flaming said.

School board member Lauren Tice Miller, a graduate of Shawnee Heights
 High School, said she was convinced the book had educational merit and 
would offer valuable information to students interested in the subject. 
She said it would be wrong to restrict access to students in 11th or 
12th grades.

In the book, she said, the characters went to a library to seek 
answers to their questions. The Shawnee Heights library ought to be such
 a reservoir of insight, she said.

“I found it to be a very emotional read. This young woman went 
through a lot in trying to find herself,” Tice Miller said. “All I could
 think about was, I’m sure there’s at least one student who is having 
this struggle. If this becomes the first one that we move to the side 
and restrict to 11th and 12th graders only, where does it stop?”

CHASE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Chase County Sheriff’s Office announced that a Milford man was arrested connected to a shooting that occurred along Kansas Highway 150 in Chase County.

Just after 11a.m. Tuesday, officers from the Emporia Police Department arrested Eric J. McClure, 38, of Milford, after being released from Newman Regional Health in Emporia, according to the KBI.

McClure was arrested on requested charges of aggravated battery, three counts of aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm, and circumvention of an ignition interlock device.

The charges allege he shot at an SUV on Highway 150 on the morning of Friday, May 13, injuring a 33-year-old man from Emporia, and placing three other men in the vehicle at risk.

Following the arrest, McClure was booked into the Lyon County Jail.&nbsp;

Louvina Mae Miller, 88, of Whitewater, Kansas, slipped peacefully into eternity on May 14, 2022.&nbsp; 

Besides the treasured titles of Wife, Mom, and Grammy, she also enjoyed her work as a registered nurse, library assistant, welder’s helper, and restaurant hostess.&nbsp; 

She was born September 17, 1933, in Newton, Kansas to Alfred H. and Ione M. (Ayers) Regier.&nbsp; 

A child of the Great Depression, Lou learned to value hard work, financial responsibility and frugality, and faith in the God of her Fathers.&nbsp; 

She is survived by children Nancy and Scott Yelland of Fairview, Michigan; Randy and Lynette Miller of Peck; Debby Tyson of Whitewater; Wanita and Skip Kiser of Robertsdale, Alabama; Craig and Jan Miller of Wichita; 18 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; dozens of nieces and nephews; innumerable friends.

A celebration of Lou’s life will be held at Emmaus Mennonite Church, Whitewater, on May 28; interment will be in the old church cemetery at 10 a.m., memorial service at 11:30 a.m. &nbsp; 

Memorials may be given to Emmaus Mennonite Church or Wheatstate Manor, both of Whitewater.&nbsp;

Marcia Fink Anderson, 84, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on January 29, 2022, after a two-year battle with multiple myeloma. &nbsp;

The daughter of Jane Mills Fink and H. Bernerd Fink, Marcia was born in Topeka, Kansas, on August 31, 1937. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1955 and attended the University of Kansas, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. &nbsp;

In 1960, she graduated from the University of Kansas School of Nursing and worked as a nurse at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. 

She married Robert J. Anderson, of Salina, in 1961.&nbsp; They were blessed with three daughters: Jane Anderson Bush (Jim) of Overland Park, KS, Nancy Anderson Colwell (Troy) of Lawrence, KS, and Susie Anderson Wilson (Steve) of Lawrence, KS. &nbsp;

Marcia cared deeply about her Salina community.&nbsp; She was a member of Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir for more than 50 years.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Topeka Junior League, Salina Charities League, PEO, St. Johns Pediatric Service League, Colonial Dames, Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church Vestry, Asbury Hospital Board of Directors, KU School of Medicine/School of Nursing-Salina Advisory Board, and the Board of Directors of CGF Industries.&nbsp; She volunteered at the Salina Care Clinic and Salina Blood Mobile and worked on Nancy Landon Kassebaum’s Senate campaigns. &nbsp;

Fearless and adventuresome, Marcia lived a life full of friends, family and as much fun as she could generate. In the mid-1980s she was certified as a scuba diver and enjoyed diving in many parts of the world, including the Great Barrier Reef.&nbsp; After her three daughters left home, she bought a horse named Dandy and rode with friends on Kansas trails and wild prairie.&nbsp; She won many ribbons in horse shows.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In 1992 at the age of 55, she enrolled at Kansas State Salina and received a private pilot’s license. After that she proudly flew family and friends around the state. Once she piloted a plane with a cameraman shooting video through an open door for a story about Salina’s Land Institute. That story would later air on the PBS Newshour.

After Bob’s retirement, they spent summers in Alexandria, Minnesota, where she enjoyed introducing her seven grandchildren to waterskiing, fishing, horseback riding and a love for the Land of 10,000 Lakes.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She read widely and enlivened book groups in both Salina and Alexandria. &nbsp;

She is survived by her husband Bob, of 61 years; daughters Jane, Nancy and Susie; grandchildren Joe and Laurie Bush, Ella and Brody Sullivan, and Bennett , Alec and Lia Wilson; sisters Elizabeth Fink Farnsworth , Diana Cochener Broze and Caroline Cochener Bonesteel; and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.&nbsp; 

She was preceded in death by her parents Jane Mills Fink and H.B. Fink; her stepmother Ruth Garvey Fink; her brother Bruce Cochener; and her sisters-in-law Nancy Matthews and Jody Anderson.

A devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister, Marcia was a loyal friend to many people and will be greatly missed. &nbsp;

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21st at Christ Cathedral Episcopal Church, 138 S. 8th Street. A private family graveside service was held.

Memorials may be made to the University of Kansas School of Nursing-Salina, 138 North Santa Fe Avenue, Salina KS 67401, or a charity of your choice.

Summer’s just around the corner, which means you might be thinking about one of my favorite things ever: vacation! In fact, I always joke that vacation planning is basically one of my spiritual gifts. But we all know vacations can get expensive real fast, which makes them a lot less fun than they should be. So, here are a few tips that will help you plan an amazing vacation without hurting your budget:

No matter what Baby Step you’re on, you don’t have to deprive yourself of having fun this summer. But it&nbsp;is&nbsp;important to plan in a way that makes sense for your finances. If you’re on Baby Step 1 or 2 (saving a $1,000 emergency fund and getting out of debt), you’ll want to find some creative ways to have a great time without spending money. You could do a staycation and use a couple days of your paid time off to relax with your family and explore free events in your own city. You could also go camping—even if it’s just in your backyard—or stay with close friends or family. Don’t lose sight of your financial goals right now, because if you stay gazelle intense, you’ll be able to take your dream vacation a lot sooner than you might think!

If you’re on Baby Step 3 (saving 3 to 6 months of expenses in a fully funded emergency fund), you could do a smaller-scale trip like a couple nights or a long weekend away. This still isn’t the time to splurge, so take a look at some less popular (but fun) destinations like a cabin in the mountains. There can be more vacation flexibility on Baby Steps 4, 5, 6 and 7, but you should still plan to cash flow something that works with your budget and other financial goals.

Doing your research to find the best rates on hotels, flights, attractions, etc. will seriously pay off. Always compare airfare rates on sites like Google Flights, Skyscanner and Scott’s Cheap Flights, and book your tickets as far in advance as you can. And check out Groupon for deals on attractions and events. Rumor has it that if you call a hotel and ask them to price match a rate you found at a similar hotel, you could knock some money off your total bill.

Speaking of price matching, when you’re shopping around for the best deals, don’t be afraid to use the power of negotiation. I know it can feel uncomfortable in the moment, but simply asking for a discount, family rate or any promotions they might be offering can save you a ton of money. I’ve done this myself. One time, my husband and I were planning an end-of-summer trip a few weeks before the fall rates were supposed to kick in, so I asked if we could have the off-season rates a little early. And they let us! We ended up saving a lot on that trip, so I’d recommend asking. The worst they can say is no, right?

Don’t fall for the points and rewards

You might be tempted to get a credit card just for those airline miles and reward points, but trust me: It’s not worth it! By the time you’ve put enough stuff on a credit card to&nbsp;maybe&nbsp;rack up enough miles for a one-way flight, you’ll be deeper in debt and further away from actually being able to cash flow a vacation.

And if you’re worried about not being able to use a debit card on your trip, I promise you can do everything with a debit card that you can with a credit card—renting a car, booking a hotel, you name it. Depending on the location, you might have to ask around at a few different places to find one that accepts debit cards (my husband and I have had to do this with rental car companies), but you’ll find one. And it will be worth it to know you steered clear of debt in the process!

Don’t compare your vacation to anyone else’s

We’ve all heard the famous quote about comparison being the thief of joy, but you guys, it’s so true—especially when it comes to vacations. You might even want to take a break from social media for a while if you know you won’t be able to scroll without feeling jealous of your neighbors’ tropical vacation and comparing it to the trip you took (or weren’t able to take). And when you spend less time comparing, you’ll be less tempted to overspend on your own vacation.

Remember, social media doesn’t give you the full picture of reality. And at the end of the day, no matter what kind of vacation or staycation you do, you still get to take a break and spend time with the people you love. That’s something worth celebrating!

CRUZE: How to vacation without breaking the budget
