KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are actively considering the future of Arrowhead Stadium, pushing ahead with planning far earlier than expected following the Kansas City Royals' decision to investigate a new downtown ballpark.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said Friday that the Chiefs, who have shared the Truman Sports Complex with the Royals since the early 1970s, would help the Major League Baseball team evaluate what is best for them. But the Chiefs also have to plan for the future of their own stadium, which will celebrate its opening 50 years ago during the upcoming season.

"I know there's been a lot of discussion about it over the last several months, and maybe even going back almost a year, to when the Royals announced they were thinking about different opportunities," Hunt said. "For us, the schedule is probably a little bit ahead of where it would naturally be because of the Royals wanting to be proactive."

The Chiefs and Royals are tied to their stadium leases through the 2030-31 seasons after Jackson County voters approved a three-eighths cent tax to pay for upgrades more than a decade ago. But given the lead time required for planning, financing and building, both teams realistically must decide on their futures in the next two or three years.

There are also political considerations at play.

Legislators in Kansas are close to approving a measure to authorize sports betting that would dedicate most of the state's revenues from the effort to lure the Chiefs across the state line. The idea would be to present a financial package that makes the move attractive to an area by Kansas Speedway, which is also close to the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City.

Hunt said that the Chiefs support the gambling legislation in Kansas, as well as similar legislation in Missouri, though efforts to authorize sports betting there have continually hit roadblocks and eventual approval remains in question.

"We know legal sports betting has been going on for a long time," Hunt said, "and so we think it's really best that it comes out into the light, you know, where it can be regulated in an appropriate way."

Much like Kauffman Stadium, which is still considered one of baseball's jewels, Arrowhead Stadium carries with it a certain mystique in the NFL. It opened in 1972 with none of the accoutrements of modern stadiums, yet its unique architecture and the rabid Chiefs fanbase have made it one of the most intimidating venues in the league.

In September 2014, the Chiefs set the Guinness Book of World Records for the loudest outdoor sports facility when 142.2 decibels of sound were recorded when Kansas City was on defense in a game against the New England Patriots.

The sprawling parking lots around the facility, which reflected the trend of urban flight during the 1960s and '70s, may no longer be in vogue. But in the case of Arrowhead Stadium, the lots create the perfect setting for perhaps the best tailgating experience in the NFL, and a mouth-watering walk through a sea of fans just to reach the stadium.

"From a personal standpoint, it's something that would be very challenging for me and my family (to move) because we have so many great memories," said Hunt, whose father Lamar founded the Chiefs and helped lead the stadium construction.

"Obviously it was a special place for my dad," Clark Hunt said. "He mentioned that if he could pick one vacation spot in the world, it would be here. So it's not a decision we're going to take lightly."

RENO COUNTy— A Kansas man with a history of crime is accused of rape and kidnapping.

Tyrone Eugene Carter, 51, Hutchinson, had his initial appearance before judge Daniel Gilligan Friday.

He is accused of holding a 15-year-old runaway from Wichita against her will, drugging her and having sex with her. He was booked into jail just after 2 p.m. Thursday and is being held on $175,000 bond.

Carter has over twenty convictions that include theft, forgery, aggravated battery, robbery, aggravated failure to appear and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Carter will have another court appearance next week.

Career criminal accused of holding Kan. teen runaway against her will

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansa man for alleged drug distribution.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Thursday, police conducted a traffic stop at 18th and Jackson in Great Bend on a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup for a traffic violation.

During the stop, the officer could smell an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted, and over 100 grams of Marijuana were located, along with drug paraphernalia.

The driver of the vehicle, Brodie Bretz, age 29, was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked in lieu of a $50,000 bond on requested charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Police impounded the vehicle.

Police: Kansas man accused of selling marijuana 

ULYSSES – A southwest Kansas man has been convicted of murder in connection with the 2019 death of a child, according to Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Uraquio Agustin Arredondo, 31, of Ulysses, was convicted in Grant County District Court following a bench trial before Judge Clinton Peterson. Arredondo was found guilty of one count of first degree felony murder and one count of child abuse. Sentencing was set for June 13.

The case involved the death of a 3-year-old child that occurred while the child was being physically abused.

On Feb. 24, 2019 authorities arrested Uraquio “Rocky” A. Arredondo, at his home in the 900 Block of S. Cheyenne in Ulysses, Kan, according to a media release from the KBI.

Arredondo was arrested for first degree murder and abuse of a child. He was booked into the Grant County Jail on $500,000 bond.

The arrest followed a yearlong investigation by the KBI and the Ulysses Police Department into the death of 3-year-old Carlos Valenzuela III. On Feb. 26, 2019, police and EMS were dispatched to the child’s home after they received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child.

Valenzuela was first transported to Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital and was then transferred to a Denver, Colo. hospital for treatment. He died Feb. 27, 2019 in Denver. Arredondo was in a relationship with child’s mother, according to the KBI.

Cheryl Ann Zenger was born on December 9, 1948, in Concordia, to Virgle and Marguerite (Menke) Hanshaw. Cheryl grew up near Haddam, attending Haddam Public Schools, and graduating from Haddam High School, class of 1966.

Following high school, she was united in marriage to Willard H. Zenger on January 14, 1968, in Haddam. To this union of 50 years, three children were born, Tammy, Scott, and Buffy.

Cheryl was a farm wife and homemaker. Willard and Cheryl owned and operated the Haddam Grocery Store for many years. Later in life, she worked as the Haddam city clerk. She enjoyed going to garage sales, along with sewing and crocheting, and sitting down with a good book.

Cheryl passed away on April 26th, 2022, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee, Kansas, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 17 days.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Willard in 2018, and brother Norman.

She is survived by her children, daughter Tammy Dankenbring of Lenexa, son Scott Zenger and his wife Stacy of Shawnee, and daughter Buffy Hemming and her husband Charles of Belle Chase, Louisiana. Cheryl is also survived by her grandchildren Carli Dankenbring, Terry Dankenbring (Jordan), Brenden Dankenbring, Peyton Zenger, Brice Zenger, Cody Allen, Rylie Hemming and Daxton Hemming. She is also survived by her brother Dennis, many cousins, and a community of friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 29th, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home in Belleville, with Pastor David Manyara officiating. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Haddam City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 28th, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are requested to the Haddam Café, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Carol Jean Moulton, 86, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Bethany Home in Lindsborg. Carol was born November 1, 1935 in Ponca City, OK to the late Alvin R. "Pete" and the late Ruby I. "Inez" (Adams) Schambron. 

She married C.R Moulton on August 19, 1956 in Marion, KS.

Carol graduated from Marion High School before attending college at St. Mary’s of the Plains in Dodge City. 

She worked as an LPN at St. Luke Hospital in Marion and at Asbury Hospital in Salina.  Later she worked at McCoy’s Christian Book store. She was an active member of Emmanuel Foursquare Church in Salina, where she enjoyed helping in the kitchen with meals.

Survivors include her husband C.R. Moulton; daughters Mary Kersey (Neal) of Bennington, KS, Jane Robertson (Jon) of Salina, KS, and Donna Moulton of Topeka, KS; son John Moulton (Jean), of Salina, KS; Dana Hill of Salina, who was like a daughter to her; as well as 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 27 from 6-8 p.m. at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 28 at Emmanuel Foursquare Church, 1325 E. Cloud St., Salina, KS with Pastor Loren Houltberg and Pastor Blaine Herron officiating. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

Kansas Wesleyan University and Saline County have announced a landmark partnership, intended to provide educational opportunities for employees of the county’s sheriff’s office and the Salina Police Department.

The Saline County Workforce Development Program will provide three certificate programs – Leadership for the Future, Culturally Informed and Trauma Informed – at no cost to the law enforcement officers. KWU, helped by a grant provided by Executive Order 11246, Saline County and the U.S. Department of the Treasury, will offer two eight-week online courses per semester. Books, tuition and all fees will be provided free of charge.

“The Board of County Commissioners is pleased to support both Kansas Wesleyan and our local law enforcement professionals by implementing training, which has been documented to lead to better community outcomes,” said Commission Chairman Jim Weese.

“As a former first responder, I can attest to the value of this agreement,” said Bernie Botson, KWU assistant professor of emergency management. “This will provide both a continuing education opportunity for some of the county’s finest and it will further their skills and abilities in a unique way. We can’t wait to get the program started!”

Because of the nature of the grant, the certificates are available only to individuals working at Salina Police Department or the Saline County Sheriff’s Office. Long-term, however, the university hopes to receive additional grants to fund similar programs for first responders around the state.

“The city of Salina is very fortunate to have Kansas Wesleyan in our community,” said Salina Police Chief Brad Nelson. “KWU has a renowned Criminal Justice program and we are pleased to partner with them in their online educational certificate program.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for local public safety personnel to earn college credit without incurring debt,” said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

“At KWU, we pride ourselves on serving our community,” said Matt Thompson, KWU president. “This agreement is another example of that approach. National data show us that additional education leads to more effective policing within communities. KWU, Saline County announce educational partnership

A longtime Salina musician is among the 2022 Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductees.

The Kansas Music Hall of Fame announced Wednesday afternoon that Salina's Steve Hanson was among the 2022 inductees. The 2022 Kansas Music Hall of Fame virtual induction ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. July 30 on ksmhof.org.

In addition to being an inductee, Hanson is this year's recipient of the Bob Hapgood Award, named in honor of Kansas Music Hall of Fame Board Member Bob Hapgood, a 2006 inductee with his band King Midas &amp; The Muflers. Hapgood also was a longtime radio DJ from McPherson. 

Each year, the Hapgood Award is given to a deserving venue owner, radio DJ, booking agent, music store owner, music teacher, important musician or musical act from a less populated area of the state that might not otherwise be recognized by the voting membership at large, according to information from the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.

A self-proclaimed guitar guy, Hanson, who 50 years ago opened S.M. Hanson Music, 335 S. Clark Street in Salina, has helped hundred of people over the years with a variety of instruments. He also is the originator of Festival Jam, the multi-band concert the Thursday evening of the Smoky Hill River Festival.

In addition to Hanson, Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductees for 2022 include the following.

Monáe also is the 2022 recipient of the Bill Lee Award. The award is named after Kansas Music Hall of Fame founder Bill Lee and "recognizes potential inductees currently active and deemed worthy by the KSMHoF board for early induction, especially those with a significant national/international profile. Standard rules for potential KSMHoF inductees include having started their careers in the field of music at least 20 years ago. The Bill Lee Award allows for possible exception by the board of that 20-year ruling," according to the Kansas Music Hall of Fame.

Patricia Kay Wendt, 79, of Mcpherson, Kansas, passed away at 1:10 a.m., Sunday, April 24th, 2022 at McPherson Hospital , McPherson Kansas. Patricia was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on May 29, 1942, a daughter of Agnes Marie (Parr) and Guy Folck. Pat attended Canton Galva grade school and graduated from Canton-Galva High School in 1960. She was a member of First Christian Church in McPherson. Through the years Pat worked as a clerk for the district court in McPherson, Kansas until she retired in 2006. Pat enjoyed shopping, traveling, cooking, scrap booking and spending time with her friends and family. Patricia was united in marriage to Terry Wendt in McPherson, Kansas, where the young couple established their first home together. They were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Traci. She is survived by her daughter Traci Atkinson and her husband Neil, of Hutchinson, Kansas, and her significant other Jim Fendt, of McPherson, Kansas. She is also survived by her grandson Connor Sullivan. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Vickie Burton and her grandson Ian Sullivan. Patricia was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on May 29, 1942, a daughter of Agnes Marie (Parr) and Guy Folck. Pat attended Canton Galva grade school and graduated from Canton-Galva High School in 1960. She was a member of First Christian Church in McPherson. Through the years Pat worked as a clerk for the district court in McPherson, Kansas until she retired in 2006. Pat enjoyed shopping, traveling, cooking, scrap booking and spending time with her friends and family. Patricia was united in marriage to Terry Wendt in McPherson, Kansas, where the young couple established their first home together. They were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Traci. She is survived by her daughter Traci Atkinson and her husband Neil, of Hutchinson, Kansas, and her significant other Jim Fendt, of McPherson, Kansas. She is also survived by her grandson Connor Sullivan. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Vickie Burton and her grandson Ian Sullivan. Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Glidden - Ediger Chapel in McPherson, Kansas. Mandy L. Odle was born on April 14, 1975 in Connecticut, and died&nbsp;April 24, 2022 at the Salina Regional Health Center, very peacefully, surrounded with love.&nbsp;

Mandy is the strongest person to ever walk on the face of the earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mandy and Todd were united in marriage on June 3, 2006 and have enjoyed a very happy life together.&nbsp;

She faced many battles throughout her life and took every one in stride.&nbsp;

Mandy had a love for writing and filled many notebooks full of her stories that are located throughout the house. Dancing and singing were a big love also. The Twilight Movies and Book Series were another big love of hers. She so enjoyed to be surrounded by all that came to be with her throughout her life. 

She had a passion for making friends and turning them into family. She enjoyed the company of others. She loved with everything she had. She didn’t consider anyone a stranger. Her door was always open and her shoulder was always there to lean on. She always had a story to tell. She enjoyed spending time with family especially her grandbabies. They were her world.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Her other enjoyment was the dirt track racing world of going to the races with Todd to enjoy a night out under the stars with the cars running loud and fast. The number on Todd and Mandy’s race car was picked for their date of union in marriage of June 3rd, car 63.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband Todd Odle of Glen Elder, her mother Diane Riley of Hays, her daughter Kristin Amon of Beloit, her son Dustin West of Cawker City, her father-in-law Stan Odle, her grandchildren, all of her close friends, and brothers-in law and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, and so many more that love her till eternity.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by many family and friends. May they all rest in peace.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 28 at the Glen Elder Friends Church. The casket will be closed the day of the service. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. with family present from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has granted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/pardons-and-commutations">the first three pardons of his term</a>, providing clemency to a Kennedy-era Secret Service agent convicted of federal bribery charges that he tried to sell a copy of an agency file and to two people who were convicted on drug-related charges but went on to become pillars in their communities.

The Democratic president also commuted the sentences of 75 others for nonviolent, drug-related convictions. The White House announced the clemencies Tuesday as it launched a series of job training and reentry programs for those in prison or recently released.

Many of those who received commutations have been serving their sentences on home confinement during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/coronavirus-pandemic">the COVID-19 pandemic</a>. Several were serving lengthy sentences and would have received lesser terms had they been convicted today for the same offenses as a result of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-america-donald-trump-sentencing-jared-kushner-legislation-5976d8ff40f148dda8199efc8e575475">the 2018 bipartisan sentencing reform</a>&nbsp;ushered into law by the Trump administration.

“America is a nation of laws and second chances, redemption, and rehabilitation,” Biden said in a statement announcing the clemencies. “Elected officials on both sides of the aisle, faith leaders, civil rights advocates, and law enforcement leaders agree that our criminal justice system can and should reflect these core values that enable safer and stronger communities.”

— Abraham Bolden Sr., 86, the first Black Secret Service agent to serve on a presidential detail. In 1964, Bolden, who served on President John F. Kennedy’s detail, faced federal bribery charges that he attempted to sell a copy of a Secret Service file. His first trial ended in a hung jury.

Following his conviction in a second trial, key witnesses admitted lying at the prosecutor’s request. Bolden, of Chicago, was denied a retrial and served several years in federal prison. Bolden has maintained his innocence and wrote a book in which he argued he was targeted for speaking out against racist and unprofessional behavior in the Secret Service.

— Betty Jo Bogans, 51, was convicted in 1998 of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in Texas after attempting to transport drugs for her boyfriend and his accomplice. Bogans, a single mother with no prior record, received a seven-year sentence. In the years since her release from prison, Bogans has held consistent employment, even while undergoing cancer treatment, and has raised a son.

— Dexter Jackson , 52, of Athens, Georgia, was convicted in 2002 for using his pool hall to facilitate the trafficking of marijuana. Jackson pleaded guilty and acknowledged he allowed his business to be used by marijuana dealers.

After Jackson was released from prison, he converted his business into a cellphone repair service that employs local high school students through a program that provides young adults with work experience. Jackson has built and renovated homes in his community, which has a shortage of affordable housing.

Civil rights and criminal justice reform groups have pushed the White House to commute sentences and work harder to reduce disparities in the criminal justice system. Biden’s grants of clemency also come as the administration has faced congressional scrutiny over misconduct and the treatment of inmates in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-health-prisons-california-congress-66990dfe50f91fbd3e499b197b590bd9">the beleaguered federal Bureau of Prisons</a>, which is responsible for inmates serving sentences of home confinement.

Biden, as head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, helped shepherd through the 1994 crime bill that many criminal justice experts say contributed to harsh sentences and mass incarceration of Black people.

During his 2020 White House run, Biden vowed to reduce the number of people incarcerated in the U.S. and called for nonviolent drug offenders to be diverted to drug courts and treatment.

He also has pushed for better training for law enforcement and called for criminal justice system changes to address disparities that have led to minorities and the poor making up a disproportionate share of the nation’s incarcerated population.

Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, granted 143 pardons and clemency to 237 during his four years in office.

Trump sought the advice of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-america-donald-trump-ap-top-news-alice-marie-johnson-celebrities-fd7cc2166d0840a785ff38cef28a2df0">prison reform advocate Alice Johnson</a>, a Black woman whose life sentence for a nonviolent drug offense he commuted in 2018. He was also lobbied by celebrity Kim Kardashian as well as advisers inside the White House, including daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as he weighed applications for clemency.

The Republican used his pardon authority to help several political friends and allies, including former campaign chairman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-donald-trump-elections-campaigns-baghdad-a6741e5cf9032ce004c8f6751b3cc968">Paul Manafort</a>, Republican operative&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ap-top-news-politics-russia-fl-state-wire-4d9cba90d023cde628040b1ca0eb89fd">Roger Stone</a>&nbsp;and Charles Kushner, the father-in-law of Ivanka Trump.

Among&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-defense-contracts-f4dea24fa4adf5a03e08a5271402ca08">Trump’s final acts as president</a>&nbsp;was pardoning his former chief strategist Steve Bannon and Al Pirro, the husband of Fox News host and Trump ally Jeanine Pirro.

Prosecutors alleged that Bannon, who had yet to stand trial when he was pardoned, had duped thousands of donors who believed their money would be used to fulfill Trump’s chief campaign promise to build a wall along the southern border. Instead, Bannon allegedly diverted more than $1 million, paying a salary to one campaign official and personal expenses for himself. Pirro was convicted in 2000 on tax charges.

With the slate of pardons and commutations announced Tuesday, Biden has issued more grants of clemency than any of the previous five presidents at this point in their terms, according to the White House.

In addition to the grants of clemency, Biden announced several new initiatives that are meant to help formerly incarcerated people gain employment — an issue that his administration is driving home as key to lowering crime rates and preventing recidivism.

The Labor Department is directing $140 million toward programs that offer job training, pre-apprenticeship programs, digital literacy training and pre-release and post-release career counseling and more for youth and incarcerated adults.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-congress-infrastructure-bill-signing-b5b8cca843133de060778f049861b144">$1 trillion infrastructure bill</a>&nbsp;passed by Congress last year includes a trio of grant programs that the administration says promote hiring of formerly incarcerated individuals. And the Labor and Justice Departments announced on Tuesday a collaborative plan to provide $145 million over the next year on job skills training as well as individualized employment and reentry plans for people serving time in the Bureau of Prisons.

Biden said the new initiatives are vital to helping the more than 600,000 people released from prison each year get on stable ground.

“Helping those who served their time return to their families and become contributing members of their communities is one of the most effective ways to reduce recidivism and decrease crime,” Biden said.

His first trial ended in a hung jury.Following his conviction in a second trial, key witnesses admitted lying at the prosecutor’s request. Bolden, of Chicago, was denied a retrial and served several years in federal prison. Bolden has maintained his innocence and wrote a book in which he argued he was targeted for speaking out against racist and unprofessional behavior in the Secret Service.— Betty Jo Bogans, 51, was convicted in 1998 of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in Texas after attempting to transport drugs for her boyfriend and his accomplice. Bogans, a single mother with no prior record, received a seven-year sentence. In the years since her release from prison, Bogans has held consistent employment, even while undergoing cancer treatment, and has raised a son.— Dexter Jackson , 52, of Athens, Georgia, was convicted in 2002 for using his pool hall to facilitate the trafficking of marijuana. Jackson pleaded guilty and acknowledged he allowed his business to be used by marijuana dealers.After Jackson was released from prison, he converted his business into a cellphone repair service that employs local high school students through a program that provides young adults with work experience. Jackson has built and renovated homes in his community, which has a shortage of affordable housing.Civil rights and criminal justice reform groups have pushed the White House to commute sentences and work harder to reduce disparities in the criminal justice system. SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have made an arrest.

Just before 5:30p.m. Monday, deputies were sent to a disturbance call involving a weapon in the 4500 block of south Meadowview in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

When deputies arrived, they located a 55-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the backyard of a residence. 

EMS transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of critical injuries.&nbsp; The suspect identified as 62-year-old Phoukhong Khamvongsa&nbsp; of Wichita, was arrested at the residence <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=142445">and booked </a>into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on requested charges of Aggravated Battery.

The victim and suspect are family members, according to Blick.

Detectives are collecting evidence and conducting interviews to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
