SMITH COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman connected to a bank robbery in Kensington, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI.

On Monday morning, June 6, at around 10:15 a.m., a woman robbed the Farmers National Bank at 133 S. Main St. in Kensington, Kansas. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office responded to the location and found Jennie R. Aanenson, 51, of Agra, Kansas, outside of the bank. Aanenson was detained.

The KBI was asked to assist at approximately 10:30 a.m. When questioned, Aanenson reported that she was forced by two men to rob the bank while armed with a bomb that was in her bag. She also claimed that her infant daughter was abducted by the men who left the area while she was inside the bank.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office immediately began searching for the reported vehicles. Also assisting in the case were the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office and the Osborne County Sheriff’s Office.

KBI agents arrived to assist, and concluded that no child was abducted, and that Aanenson does not have an infant daughter. KHP’s Hazardous Devices Unit responded to the bank, and determined that the device was not a bomb.&nbsp;

Monday evening, Aanenson was arrested for suspected aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated criminal threat, and two counts of interference with law enforcement. She was booked into the Smith County Jail. Formal charges are pending.

law enforcement concluded that many of her statements were not credible. It has been determined that the device was not a bomb, and that the woman does not have an infant.

Just before 10:30a.m., according to a social media report from the Smith County Sheriff's Department,&nbsp; a woman entered a bank in Kensington, in an attempt to rob the bank. She made a bomb threat. She left the bank and two male suspects with the woman drove away and took her 8-week old baby girl.

Law enforcement in Kensington and surrounding towns were working to locate the suspects and the baby.&nbsp;

One suspect was described as wearing jeans, a white tee-shirt had a gold tooth and three teardrop tattoos under an eye.

The second suspect was described as wearing jeans and a green and white flannel shirt with cut-off sleeves.

The suspects were reported driving a white passenger van with a touch screen and Texas license plates. The gunshot victim was described as driving a Black Jeep four-door, Wrangler.

Barbara Ann Nowak – age 68, of Great Bend, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at her home.

Barbara was born on December 12, 1953, in Hays, Kansas, the oldest daughter to Vernon and Lillian (Sander) Nowak of Gorham, Kansas.

She grew up in Gorham, Kansas and was a 1972 graduate of Gorham High School. After high school, she attended Vo-Tech Nurse’s Aide Class in Salina, Kansas. Barbara worked many years in the Hays and Great Bend communities in health care, fulfilling her desire to help others in need.

Survivors include her mother, Lillian Nowak, Salina, KS; her brothers, David Nowak, Salina, KS; Tom Nowak and wife, Mary, Salina, KS; John Nowak, Salina, KS; her sisters, Kay Schmitt and husband, Leonard, Salina, KS; Vernetta Hammersmith, White City, KS; Marilyn Labinski, Olathe, KS; many nephews and nieces, and a lifetime of friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Nowak; her brother-in-law, Robert Hammersmith; and her sister-in-law, Pamela Nowak.

A Christian Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, June 12, 2022, at the Central Baptist Church, 3301 Lakin Ave., Great Bend, Kansas with Pastor Charlotte Maxwell officiating.

The family will receive friends at a noon luncheon that will be served at the church prior to the service.

There will be an inurnment following the services at Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mary Jane Riva, CEO of the Pizza Factory, has a cautionary message for her customers this summer: Prepare to wait longer for your Hawaiian pie or calzone.

The Pizza Factory’s 100 West Coast locations are desperately short of workers. With about 12 employees per store, they’re barely half-staffed — just when many more Americans are venturing out to restaurant chains like hers.

“The days of 15-minute orders,” Riva said, “may not be happening anymore.”

Talk to other employers in America’s vast hospitality sector — hotels, restaurants, public pools, ice cream parlors, pick-your-own strawberry farms — and you’ll hear a similar lament. They can’t fill many of their summer jobs because the number of open positions far exceeds the number of people willing and able to fill them — even at increased wages.

Some help may be coming: School’s out for summer, cutting loose millions of high school and college students for the next three months. Riva, for one, is hoping to field more job applications from students seeking summertime spending money.

Teens are in an unusually commanding position — at least those among them who want a job. Researchers at Drexel University’s Center for Labor Markets and Policy predicted in a report last month that an average of 33% of youths ages 16 to 19 will be employed each month from June through August this year, the highest such rate since 34% in the summer of 2007.

Among them is Samuel Castillo, a 19-year-old four-year veteran of Miami’s Summer Jobs Connect program who’s already built an impressive resume. In one former job with the program, he worked in a legislative office, registering constituent complaints. His first summer, he saved $900 to buy parts to build his own computer.

Now, he’s studying computer engineering technology in college and working in the Jobs Connect program again this summer, earning $15 an hour teaching other students how to manage money.

“The goal for working is to pay my bills,” he said. “School costs money. Books cost money.’’

Likewise, Lara Beckius, a junior at Connecticut College, said she went from being stressed out about finding a summer job to being stressed out about choosing among multiple offers. In the end, Beckius settled on an internship at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine.

After several offers arrived within a week, she frantically sought advice from others and searched on Google for a courteous way to turn down job offers.

“It was a little crazy,” said Beckius, a 19-year-old from Avon, Connecticut. “It went from, ‘Am I going to have something this summer?’ to having four opportunities and, ‘Which one am I going to take?’ ”

This year, for the first time in a couple of years, employers might get more help from overseas. After restricting immigration as a COVID-19 precaution, the government is beginning to loosen up: The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has raised the limit on H-2B temporary work permits — used for seasonal work — by 35,000 visas.

Cape Resorts, which operates several boutique hotels, cottages and restaurants in Cape May and elsewhere in New Jersey and New York, will employ about 120 international students this summer on J-1 visas, work permits that also serve as a kind of cultural exchange program. The company employs about 950 staffers.

“Finding staff that are eager to fill hospitality roles remains a challenge,” said Cindy D’Aoust, a company executive. “But it is great to see the return of our international students as well as returning college students for the summer season.”

Still, today’s level of teen employment isn’t close to what it used to be. In August 1978, 50% of America’s teenagers were working. Around 2000, teenage employment went into a decade-long slide. In June 2010, during the agonizingly slow recovery from the 2007-2009 Great Recession, teenage employment bottomed at 25% before slowly rising again as the economy recovered.

It was more than economic doldrums that kept teens away from work. Longer-term economic forces and changing personal choices contributed, too. The U.S. economy now offers fewer low-skill, entry-level jobs — ready-made for teens — than in the 1970s and 1980s. Many such jobs that do remain, from supermarket clerk to fast-food burger flipper, are increasingly likely to be taken by older workers, many of them immigrants.

And many teens from affluent families, eyeing admission to top universities, have chosen to forgo summer jobs for summer school or volunteer work that bear mention on college applications. Others now spend their summers playing sports.

But COVID and its economic damage changed everything. At first, the economy collapsed as businesses locked down and consumers hunkered down at home. Soon, vast federal aid and ultra-low interest rates ignited an unexpectedly fast recovery. Businesses scrambled to recall employees they had laid off and to find new ones to keep up with resurgent customer orders.

The U.S. unemployment rate has dropped to 3.6%, just above a half-century low. This week, the government reported that employers posted 11.4 job openings in April, down from a record 11.9 million in March but still extraordinarily high. On average, there are now roughly two jobs available for every unemployed American.

Suddenly, teenagers are in much greater demand. And the pay available to them — $15 or $16 an hour for entry-level work — is drawing some back into the job market. Teenage employment has already topped pre-pandemic levels even though the overall job market still hasn’t.

With desperate employers jacking up hourly wages, many teens can take jobs that pay better than the usual seasonal openings at summer camps, RV parks, and resorts, said Julia Pollak, an economist at ZipRecruiter.

“We have this big gap in the market now,” she said. “There are no takers for jobs that are typically given to teens for pocket money.”

It’s become a serious headache for Melissa Mroczek, who owns Nomad Wax Co., which makes soy candles and scented products in Omaha, Nebraska. Mroczek has been struggling to fill a position for a paid marketing intern. A few candidates showed interest. Two got to the hiring stage — and then disappeared, even though Mroczek is offering above minimum wage pay, plus school credits and a flexible schedule.

Never in her four years of running Nomad Candle, and 15 years before that as a hiring manager for a national financial services firm, has Mroczek had so much difficulty hiring.

“We still haven’t filled it, and at this point we may not be able to,” she said. “So we may look to find a high school student or try to move this to the fall semester instead and work directly with a professor to offer course credit.”

For teens who do want to work and have their choice of jobs, economists and other analysts welcome the reversal in fortune. Summertime jobs give young people experience and make it more likely they will work later in life, the Drexel researchers say — good news for a U.S. labor force that is losing the vast baby boom generation to retirement. Entry-level jobs also give teens the opportunity to learn how to handle money and to mingle with colleagues and customers from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.

With about 12 employees per store, they’re barely half-staffed — just when many more Americans are venturing out to restaurant chains like hers.“The days of 15-minute orders,” Riva said, “may not be happening anymore.”Talk to other employers in America’s vast hospitality sector — hotels, restaurants, public pools, ice cream parlors, pick-your-own strawberry farms — and you’ll hear a similar lament. They can’t fill many of their summer jobs because the number of open positions far exceeds the number of people willing and able to fill them — even at increased wages.Some help may be coming: School’s out for summer, cutting loose millions of high school and college students for the next three months. Riva, for one, is hoping to field more job applications from students seeking summertime spending money.Teens are in an unusually commanding position — at least those among them who want a job. Researchers at Drexel University’s Center for Labor Markets and Policy predicted in a report last month that an average of 33% of youths ages 16 to 19 will be employed each month from June through August this year, the highest such rate since 34% in the summer of 2007.Among them is Samuel Castillo, a 19-year-old four-year veteran of Miami’s Summer Jobs Connect program who’s already built an impressive resume. In one former job with the program, he worked in a legislative office, registering constituent complaints. His first summer, he saved $900 to buy parts to build his own computer.Now, he’s studying computer engineering technology in college and working in the Jobs Connect program again this summer, earning $15 an hour teaching other students how to manage money.“The goal for working is to pay my bills,” he said. “School costs money. Books cost money.’’Likewise, Lara Beckius, a junior at Connecticut College, said she went from being stressed out about finding a summer job to being stressed out about choosing among multiple offers. In the end, Beckius settled on an internship at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay, Maine.After several offers arrived within a week, she frantically sought advice from others and searched on Google for a courteous way to turn down job offers.“It was a little crazy,” said Beckius, a 19-year-old from Avon, Connecticut. “It went from, ‘Am I going to have something this summer?’ to having four opportunities and, ‘Which one am I going to take?’ ”This year, for the first time in a couple of years, employers might get more help from overseas. After restricting immigration as a COVID-19 precaution, the government is beginning to loosen up: The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has raised the limit on H-2B temporary work permits — used for seasonal work — by 35,000 visas.Cape Resorts, which operates several boutique hotels, cottages and restaurants in Cape May and elsewhere in New Jersey and New York, will employ about 120 international students this summer on J-1 visas, work permits that also serve as a kind of cultural exchange program. The company employs about 950 staffers.“Finding staff that are eager to fill hospitality roles remains a challenge,” said Cindy D’Aoust, a company executive. “But it is great to see the return of our international students as well as returning college students for the summer season.”Still, today’s level of teen employment isn’t close to what it used to be. In August 1978, 50% of America’s teenagers were working. Around 2000, teenage employment went into a decade-long slide. In June 2010, during the agonizingly slow recovery from the 2007-2009 Great Recession, teenage employment bottomed at 25% before slowly rising again as the economy recovered.It was more than economic doldrums that kept teens away from work. Longer-term economic forces and changing personal choices contributed, too. The U.S. economy now offers fewer low-skill, entry-level jobs — ready-made for teens — than in the 1970s and 1980s. Many such jobs that do remain, from supermarket clerk to fast-food burger flipper, are increasingly likely to be taken by older workers, many of them immigrants.And many teens from affluent families, eyeing admission to top universities, have chosen to forgo summer jobs for summer school or volunteer work that bear mention on college applications. Others now spend their summers playing sports.But COVID and its economic damage changed everything. At first, the economy collapsed as businesses locked down and consumers hunkered down at home. Soon, vast federal aid and ultra-low interest rates ignited an unexpectedly fast recovery. Businesses scrambled to recall employees they had laid off and to find new ones to keep up with resurgent customer orders.The U.S. unemployment rate has dropped to 3.6%, just above a half-century low. This week, the government reported that employers posted 11.4 job openings in April, down from a record 11.9 million in March but still extraordinarily high. On average, there are now roughly two jobs available for every unemployed American.Suddenly, teenagers are in much greater demand. And the pay available to them — $15 or $16 an hour for entry-level work — is drawing some back into the job market. Teenage employment has already topped pre-pandemic levels even though the overall job market still hasn’t.With desperate employers jacking up hourly wages, many teens can take jobs that pay better than the usual seasonal openings at summer camps, RV parks, and resorts, said Julia Pollak, an economist at ZipRecruiter.“We have this big gap in the market now,” she said. “There are no takers for jobs that are typically given to teens for pocket money.”It’s become a serious headache for Melissa Mroczek, who owns Nomad Wax Co., which makes soy candles and scented products in Omaha, Nebraska. Mroczek has been struggling to fill a position for a paid marketing intern. A few candidates showed interest. Two got to the hiring stage — and then disappeared, even though Mroczek is offering above minimum wage pay, plus school credits and a flexible schedule.Never in her four years of running Nomad Candle, and 15 years before that as a hiring manager for a national financial services firm, has Mroczek had so much difficulty hiring.“We still haven’t filled it, and at this point we may not be able to,” she said. “So we may look to find a high school student or try to move this to the fall semester instead and work directly with a professor to offer course credit.”For teens who do want to work and have their choice of jobs, economists and other analysts welcome the reversal in fortune. Summertime jobs give young people experience and make it more likely they will work later in life, the Drexel researchers say — good news for a U.S. labor force that is losing the vast baby boom generation to retirement. Entry-level jobs also give teens the opportunity to learn how to handle money and to mingle with colleagues and customers from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds.

Betty Jane Driscoll, 91, of Warren, MI, passed away May 17, 2022. She was born July 3, 1930 in Pasadena, California to the late Noble and Marybelle Ketchum.

Betty loved her family more than anything. 

A graduate of Bethany High School and then Bethany Nazarene College in Oklahoma, Betty met her husband Jack at Bethany Peniel College where she earned her BA degree in religion. They met in August 1954 and married January 28, 1955. They were married for 53 ½ years. 

Betty and Jack were a&nbsp;ministry team. As a minister’s wife Betty was always at her beloved husband Jack’s side helping him with whatever he needed in his pastoral work. Taking care of her husband, her family, and her dedication to her faith were her life’s work. In her free time, Betty would read her Bible daily. She also loved to read fiction books and the Hallmark Channel could often be heard in the background. &nbsp;Betty was a cherished mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, and aunt.

Beloved wife of the late Rev. Jack Driscoll for 53 ½ years. Loving mom of Cindy (Dennis) Ball, Joyce (Gene) Fletcher, and the late Pam McCoy. Dear grandma of Jennifer (Kyle) Inmon, Joshua (Stacey) Lytle, Jordan (Julie) Lytle, Kirstin (Andrew) Christensen, Christopher (Ashley) Ball, Jillian (Ryan) Hatfield, Kaitlin (Anton) Gleason, and Chad Fletcher. SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a bank robbery have a suspect in custody.

The Wichita Police Department has arrested 55-year-old Roland Vandenberg of Wichita on a robbery charge stemming from an investigation of a bank robbery that occurred Thursday in the 4800 block of S. Broadway.

Just after 1p.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to a bank robbery in the 4800 block of S. Broadway in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

Officers learned that a male suspect had entered the bank, demanded money, then left the bank northbound on Broadway. 

Officers located a man matching the suspect description in the area. He was identified as 55-year-old Roland Vandenberg of Wichita.&nbsp; Police <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20073955">booked him into </a>the Sedgwick County Jail on a requested charge of robbery.

Kasey Hanney, has been named general manager at Tony’s Pizza Events Center, effective Monday.

Hanney joined TPEC in 2019 as the events manager, and was promoted to director of events in July 2020. In that role, she has increased convention booking sales and worked to streamline processes for both conventions and ticketed events. Previous to TPEC, Hanney was the premium events manager at Sporting Kansas City, and general manager of a local restaurant for six years.

“It has always been my dream to become a general manager of a venue, especially one with so much potential for growth,” said Hanney. “As I move forward in the role of general manager, I can say that I am deeply grateful and proud to represent a strong brand like OVG360, and excited to lead the amazing team at Tony’s Pizza Events Center.”

Outgoing Tony’s Pizza Events Center General Manager Susan Trafton&nbsp; has accepted the position of assistant general manager at the Budweiser Events Center, effective June 20. The Budweiser Events Center at The Ranch Events Complex, located in Loveland, Colorado, is a 7,200 seat multi-purpose venue, which opened in September 2003, and is home to the Colorado Eagles, of the American Hockey League. The arena, which is owned by Larimer County, is a multipurpose facility which hosts hockey, basketball, football, family shows, rodeos, diverse concerts, and trade shows. 

Trafton, who was the director of sales &amp; marketing, was promoted to general manager at TPEC in 2018. She has helped attract new touring content, conventions and trade shows to Salina, oversaw multiple remodeling projects, and helped secure two naming rights sponsorships for the facility.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity to grow within OVG and move to a bigger market,” said Trafton.

“However, I would be remiss if I didn’t say it is a little bittersweet. Salina is a wonderful community and I truly appreciate all the support I have received while working here. I am so proud of what our team has accomplished and will continue to support them in years to come.”

Hanney promoted to GM at Tony's Pizza Events Center

Sarah Keck is the new arts education coordinator for Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

A native of Altamont, Mo., Keck most recently lived and worked in Kansas City, Kan. She worked as a graduate assistant in the Kenneth J LcBudde Collections Department of the Miller Nichols Library and as a host coordinator for music festivals held on campus. She also has taught middle and high school instrumental music while being an active low-brass clinician and private studio instructor within the Kansas City area.

“My experience coming from a small community and working in a city supported by a family of musicians and educators allowed me to see the impact of accessible opportunities within the arts. I look forward to bringing these combined interests and experiences to serve the community of Salina,” Keck said.

Keck holds a bachelor’s degree in music education with a K-12 certification from the UMKC Conservatory and will complete her master's degree in performance at the UMKC Conservatory this summer.

“Sarah’s experience in the classroom as a music educator and her work in coordinating events makes her an excellent choice for the Arts &amp; Humanities staff,” said Brad Anderson, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities executive director. “She will be a tremendous resource for teaching artists, musical performers, and the community.”

As of Wednesday, Keck will oversee the Smoky Hill River Festival’s Entertainment selection, booking, and scheduling. She will also oversee the Arts Infusion Program in local schools and serve as the staff liaison for Friday Night Live entertainment and activities.
