JOHNSON COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested an Edgerton man Wednesday morning following an investigation by the Northeast Child Victim Task Force (NECVTF) and the Collin County, Texas Sheriff’s Office, according to a media release from the KBI.

Just before 8a.m. Wednesday, agents from the NECVTF, assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a search warrant at 207 E. 6th&nbsp;St. in Edgerton, Kansas. 

During the execution of the warrant,&nbsp; agents arrested Tony L. Hamer, 57, of Edgerton on a Texas warrant for suspected solicitation of prostitution of a person younger than 18-years-old.

Following the arrest, Hamer was booked into the Johnson County Jail. Extradition proceedings are expected.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Iranian operative has been charged in a plot to murder former&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/john-bolton">U.S. national security adviser John Bolton</a>&nbsp;in presumed retaliation for a U.S. airstrike that killed the country’s most powerful general, offering $300,000 to “eliminate” the Trump administration official, the Justice Department said Wednesday.

Shahram Poursafi, identified by U.S. officials as a member of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, is currently wanted by the FBI on charges related to the murder-for-hire plot.

Prosecutors say the scheme unfolded more than a year after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/qassim-soleimani">Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force</a>&nbsp;and an architect of Tehran’s proxy wars in the Middle East, was killed in a targeted airstrike as he traveled from Baghdad’s international airport in January 2020. After the strike, Bolton, who by then had left his White House post, tweeted, “Hope this is the first step to regime change in Tehran.”

The FBI believes that Poursafi was acting on behalf of the Revolutionary Guard when he sought to have Bolton killed, according to an affidavit unsealed Wednesday. Law enforcement officials located photographs of Poursafi in fatigues and with posters of Iran and Soleimani in the background to back up their allegation that he is a uniformed Revolutionary Guard member.

The Justice Department traces the plot to the fall of 2021, when Poursafi, 45, an Iranian citizen who officials say has never visited the United States, asked an unidentified person he met through social media and who was living in the U.S. to take photographs of Bolton for a book he said he was writing.

The person introduced Poursafi to an associate that could take the requested photos and videos. After the two connected, Poursafi encouraged that person, who was actually a confidential source working with the FBI, to hire someone to kill Bolton and offered to pay $300,000 for the job. Poursafi told the person that he wanted “the guy” to be purged or eliminated.

Poursafi provided the person with Bolton’s office address, including the name and contact information for someone who worked in the office, the FBI affidavit says.

“This was not an idle threat,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen, the Justice Department’s top national security official, said in a statement released by the department. “And this is not the first time we’ve uncovered brazen acts by Iran to exact revenge against individuals in the U.S.”

In 2011, for instance, the FBI and Justice Department revealed an Iranian government plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. while the ambassador was in the U.S.

A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, Nasser Kanaani, called the latest accusations baseless and politically motivated, state-run media reported.

He said Iran “reserves the right to take any action within the framework of international law to defend the rights of the government and citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

In his own statement, Bolton thanked the FBI and Justice Department for their work in developing the case and the Secret Service for providing protection.

“While much cannot be said publicly right now, one point is indisputable: Iran’s rulers are liars, terrorists, and enemies of the United States,” he said.

The unsealing of the complaint comes two days after negotiators seeking to revive&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-iran-dubai-nuclear-middle-east-45ce172ef6fbcf367c77b11ea8c045f5">the Iran nuclear accord</a>&nbsp;in Vienna closed on a “final text” of an agreement, with parties now consulting in their capitals on whether to agree to it it.

The 2015 deal granted Iran sanctions relief in exchange for tight curbs on its atomic program. Since the U.S. withdrew from the agreement under President Donald Trump, Iran has sped up its nuclear enrichment program. Bolton has been among the most hawkish critics of the deal and efforts by the Biden administration to rejoin it.

In his statement, Bolton said “Iran’s nuclear-weapons and terrorist activities are two sides of the same coin” and asserted that America re-entering the 2015 deal would be an “unparalleled self-inflicted wound, to ourselves and our closest Middle East allies.”

The Justice Department described Poursafi as at-large abroad but did not elaborate on where he might be located. It is not clear when or if he will be taken into custody. He faces charges of using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire and attempting to provide transnational support to a murder plot.

The Revolutionary Guard is a paramilitary organization formed in the wake of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution to defend its clerically overseen government. The Quds Force is the Guard’s expeditionary unit, responsible for operations abroad.

Soleimani was the head of that force, and the Defense Department said at the time of the January 2020 strike that it killed him because he “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Two suspects accused in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/kansas/name/german-clerici-obituary?id=14196667">the death</a> of a Kansas man whose body was found in a culvert in 2010 are due in court Thursday morning.

&nbsp;Kristopher Valadez, 32,&nbsp; and Candace Valadez, 32, are scheduled to appear in&nbsp;Judge Sean Hatfield’s courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

The couple were extradited from South Carolina to Kansas on Tuesday and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail, according to the sheriff's department booking report.&nbsp;

Several days later, investigators found <a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/kansas/name/german-clerici-obituary?id=14196667">Clerici </a>shot to death in a culvert east of Augusta. Four months later, deputies found his car in the 3000 Block of East 21st North in Wichita.

In 2021, Butler County Sheriff Monty Hughey had investigators take a fresh look at the case.&nbsp; They discovered information that prompted investigators to conduct follow-up interviews and learned more information and new evidence in the case.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In July,&nbsp; investigators from the Butler County Sheriff's officials traveled to South Carolina. With the assistance of the Greenville South Carolina County Sheriff's Office and Wichita police, deputies arrested the couple. Both are former Wichita residents.

Suspects in 2010 murder set to face Kansas judge

SHAWNEE COUNTY–The search for a second suspect accused in a violent Kansas armed robbery is over.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Task Force in collaboration with other agencies located and arrested 20-year-old London D. Pike near Jefferson County and and Leavenworth County, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Just after 6p.m. Tuesday, Pike of Topeka&nbsp; was booked into jail, according to Shawnee County inmate records.

He is being held on requested charges of rape, aggravated kidnapping, theft, aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon and aggravated intimidation of a witness, criminal threat, according to online records.

On the evening of July 16, sheriff's deputies were dispatched for an unknown problem in the 11,000 block of SW 29th Street in Shawnee County, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

&nbsp;A 27-year-old female victim was taken at gun point from Topeka to this location.

During this time, the victim was struck in the head with a firearm, threatened and stripped of her outer clothing. The victim’s black 2017 Chevrolet Malibu was stolen and she was left in the roadway. A citizen found her walking and called 911.

The victim received medical attention on scene by American Medical Response&nbsp;and was then transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Christian.

Throughout the investigation, deputies identified two suspects. 41-year-old Nicole Fox and Pike.&nbsp;

On August 1, authorities arrested Fox in Allen County in&nbsp;the July 25 death of 34-year-old Blake Pearson in Chanute, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

WASHINGTON — As the new school year begins, the Internal Revenue 
Service reminds teachers and other educators that they'll be able to 
deduct up to $300 of out-of-pocket classroom expenses for 2022 when they
 file their federal income tax return next year.

This is the first time the annual limit has increased since the 
special educator expense deduction was enacted in 2002. For tax years 
2002 through 2021, the limit was $250 per year. The limit will rise in 
$50 increments in future years based on inflation adjustments.

For 2022, an eligible educator can deduct up to $300 of qualifying 
expenses. If they're married and file a joint return with another 
eligible educator, the limit rises to $600. But in this situation, not 
more than $300 for each spouse.

Educators can claim this deduction, even if they take the standard 
deduction. Eligible educators include anyone who is a kindergarten 
through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide in a 
school for at least 900 hours during the school year. Both public and 
private school educators qualify.

Educators can deduct the unreimbursed cost of:

Qualified expenses don't include the cost of home schooling or 
for nonathletic supplies for courses in health or physical education. As
 with all deductions and credits, the IRS reminds educators to keep good

Making the most of available resources to counter COVID-19 effects, Saline Stars were born in April through the Choose Saline County app.

The loyalty program aims to spend up to $670,000 of the county’s $10.532 million federal allotment from the American Rescue Plan Act, to help both participating local businesses and the people who patronize them.

Choose Saline County is designed to bolster economic activity in the community.

“It’s like a double whammy of supporting local business,” said Phillip Smith-Hanes, Saline County administrator.

All that’s needed to start is to get the app on your wireless phone, and start collecting Saline Stars. Go to the App Store or Google Play on your phone or tablet and type in “Choose Saline County” and link to a debit or credit card.

“Every time you spend money with that card at a local business that has signed up, you earn Saline Stars,” he said. “Every star you earn is worth a dollar and you can redeem those dollars at redeeming businesses.”

Businesses can participate in one of two ways, Smith-Hanes said.

“We push for businesses to accept star redemptions as payment,” he said. “But there are places where you earn but not redeem. It’s a little more involved for the business to redeem. It doesn’t cost the business anything, but they have to reprogram their cash registers and train their employees, and we understand that is a lot to ask from many small businesses in the current environment.”

The app shows the participating businesses — as of Aug. 1 there were 255 involved; 616 people have downloaded the app and 171 of those have linked their cards.

“It’s a really cool and innovative way for the county to use the ARPA dollars to benefit small businesses and residents as well. It puts money in their pockets by incentivizing them to spend locally,” said Renee Duxler, director of economic and workforce development at Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

To ease the endemic sting early on in the pandemic, the county awarded grants for stimulus funding through the chamber.

“When we got the ARPA funds, we decided ‘Instead of just giving free money to people not doing well, let’s try and encourage economic activity in the community,’ ” Smith-Hanes said. “We were looking around and found this app that a couple of other cities had used.”

Other cities, such as Boston, Mass., and Akron, Ohio, used the app.

“At Akron in particular, this app ended up returning nine dollars for every one dollar the city had invested in it. We thought that was a pretty good return,” he said. “It took about six months from the time we had this bright idea to the time we were able to let people start downloading the app on their phones.”

Choose Saline County was announced publicly at the Chamber Banquet in April, and it launched June 7. 

“I got 10 Stars just for signing up,” said Terry Burger, a retired Salina Farm Bureau agent.

“Merchants and the community both need to take advantage of this,” he said.

At first, Choose Saline County adoption was slow, said Tammy Jarvis, owner of Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe, but she’s hopeful it will benefit both Salina businesses and consumers.

“It takes time for a program like that to catch on,” she said. “We’ve been pushing ‘shop local’ for a long time. This is a fun way to bring it to people’s attention.”

The app is open to any consumer who shops in Saline County, and any business within the county. It doesn’t cost anything, and you don’t have to be a chamber member, Smith-Hanes said.

“If you are from McPherson, Dickinson, Ottawa or any county, we encourage you to download the app and use it when you shop in Saline County,” he said. “But businesses have to be from Saline County.”

The app could also benefit businesses and individuals who advertise in participating local media, but as of Aug. 8, Duxler said, none had joined in. 

“Theoretically, if local media companies were on the app, then businesses could earn stars,” she said. “It would depend on their (the media company’s) invoice system and how they accept payment if they could be.”

There are many ways Choose Saline County can generate local commerce, benefit businesses and people.

“It’s basically any sort of transaction you can do with a credit (or debit) card,” Smith-Hanes said. “Up to 20 percent of what you spend, you earn in stars. If you pay 20 dollars for a pizza, it’s four stars.”

Businesses are sorted by type and location on the app, he said.

“It’s a way to make that local money stay local,” Duxler said.

The county’s committed so far to participate in Choose Saline County for a year, but has enough money for three years, Smith-Hanes said.

“Theoretically, if this works, we would get enough sales tax money in the county to continue funding it into the future,” he said.

“I know quite a few people who earn the stars,” Duxler said. “There are several businesses like Ad Astra. People are redeeming coffee there. Brown’s Shoe Fit (2150 Planet Avenue) is real high on it. At Vernon Jewelers (123 N. Santa Fe), people have been redeeming stars for rings and other jewelry.”

Today in History - Aug. 9

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 8:30a.m. Friday Sheriff's Detectives conducted a traffic stop on a Chrysler Minivan at 4th and Maple Street in Independence, Kansas for a traffic infraction, according to Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 35-year-old Ashley Linton and a passenger in the vehicle identified as Ryan Banning both of Independence, Kansas. 

 During the traffic stop the sheriff’s office Police Service Dog, Hector, was deployed around the outside of the vehicle for a free air sniff and alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle 

This allowed detectives to search inside where they located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. 

Deputies released Banning from the scene.  Linton took ownership of the narcotics and was taken into custody then transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. 

 Upon arrival at DOC, it was discovered Linton was in possession of written checks belonging to area businesses and citizens. 

 Detectives contacted the businesses and it was determined they had been stolen within the past couple of weeks.  The investigation into the stolen checks is ongoing. 

 Linton was booked into DOC on requested charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, expired tag, and no insurance.  This case has been sent to the County Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff: Kan. woman found with stolen checks, drugs

SEDGWICK COUNTY— A jury found a registered sex offender guilty in a violent kidnapping and rape of a 15-year-old who was walking home from a Wichita grocery store.

Anthony Craig Seymour, 61, Wichita, is guilty of rape, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated robbery, according to the Sedgwick County Attorney's office.&nbsp;

In November 0f 2019, police responded to a 911 call of an abduction in the 300 Block of North Volutsia in Wichita, according to Wichita Police Captain Brett Allred.

Upon arrival, police searched the area and located a 2005 Lexus driven by a suspect later identified as Anthony Seymour leaving the area. They also observed a 15-year-old girl exit the vehicle while it was moving slowly and run toward the officers.&nbsp;Seymour fled in the car. Police initially were not able to locate it.

Investigators learned that while the girl was walking home, Seymour approached, held a knife to her, forced her into the Lexus and sexually assaulted her, according to Allred.

Through continued investigation, police located the victim’s phone in a parking lot and were able to obtain video in the area and a tag number on the car. 

Police located the vehicle and Seymour in the 1900 Block of North Lorraine. He was arrested without incident and booked on requested charges of kidnapping, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated battery and a Kansas Department of Corrections arrest and detain order, according to Allred.

“The victim is very brave,” said Allred. “She saw police and took action to get out of the car, run to the officers and explain what had happened.”&nbsp;She had been on her way to Dillons and had seen the suspect and thought he was acting suspiciously. On the way home, the suspect approached her a second time and forced her in the vehicle, according to Allred.

EMS transported the girl to a local hospital for treatment.

Seymour had been on parole since May of 2018 after a 2004 conviction for rape, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. Seymour is scheduled for sentencing on September 19, according to the district attorney's office.

On the way home, the suspect approached her a second time and forced her in the vehicle, according to Allred.EMS transported the girl to a local hospital for treatment.Seymour had been on parole since May of 2018 after a 2004 conviction for rape, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. A Salina teen was arrested Saturday after he allegedly attempted to solicit acquaintances to do harm to his stepfather.

Salina Police Interim Patrol Captain David Villanueva said this morning that a 43-year-old Salina man was notified by other people that Joseph T. Moran, 18, Salina, was attempting to solicit acquaintances to do bodily harm to the 43-year-old with an edged weapon. The solicitation attempts were made via social media.

Moran was arrested Saturday evening on the following requested charges, Villanueva said.

Villanueva said a software glitch caused Moran's requested charges to include murder instead of the solicitation charge in the Saline County Jail booking information released Sunday morning.

At Lindsey’s request she was cremated. A Memorial/Luncheon (Pot luck) will be Sunday, Aug. 21st at 12 at 1283 Windmill Rd, Delphos KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O Box 166, Minneapolis KS 67467 to assist with expenses.&nbsp;
