Friends of the Salina Public Library are hoping to find new homes for thousands of books and other items during the organization's upcoming used book sale.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, used book sale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, romance as well as general fiction. We have movies, music CDs, and games. We have expanded our offering of materials for children and young adults, so I really think there is something for everyone.”

“And our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill a bag with books for just $5,” Laura Rhodenbaugh, Friends treasurer added.

The Friends of the Salina Public Library Used Book Sale is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday in the library, 301 W. Elm Street, downstairs in the Youth Services Annex beside the Imagination Station.

And if you're a member of the Friends of the Salina Public Library, you can get in a day early, from 4:30-7 p.m. Friday!

Not a Friends member? Library card holders can sign up to become a Friends member at the door of the book sale. The cost is $10 a year for an individual membership and $25 a year for a family membership. In addition to getting first dibs on used book sales, Friends members do no pay fines on overdue library materials, the organization noted in a news release.

The book sale is a fundraiser for the Friends organization, a volunteer, board-guided, membership organization that acts as a booster club for the library. Some Friends’ activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and youth activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplies for the CLASS program, and providing scholarships for teen library volunteers, the organization noted.

MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing and have a suspect in custody.

On Saturday, sheriff's deputies were called to the Miami County Medical Center in Paola after report of a stabbing, according to a media release.&nbsp; Deputies learned two brothers had been involved in an altercation at a rural home in the 32000 Block of Lone Star Road.

Investigators learned the brothers got into an argument about one of them eating the other's sandwich, according to the sheriff's department. The dispute became physical and one brother stabbed the other in the leg causing non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp; A personal vehicle transported the victim to the medical center. Deputies located and arrested the other brother and booked him into the Miami County Jail. The sheriff's office did not released the names of those involved.&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There was a time in Travis Kelce's career that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end could simply line up against a linebacker, or even a safety, and know that his speed and agility would be able to get him open downfield.

Kelce turned 33 this week, though, and those days are slowly slipping away. Yet what he has lost in athleticism Kelce has made up for in experience. You'll see him slowly going in motion, or quickly moving across the formation, setting defenders up even before the snap and giving him just that extra bit of space to allow him to continually make plays.

"He's just smarter as a player," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "That's the biggest thing. He knows how to get himself open. He knows how to use other people and other parts of the concept to get himself open. And he's smart about how he blocks, how he can pin guys and get us in the right position. I think he's just continued to evolve."

He is once again tops among NFL tight ends, too, with 26 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns.

It might be a stretch to say that Kelce, who along with the Chiefs play the Raiders on Monday night, has revolutionized the tight end position. That would be slighting those who came before him: Ozzie Newsome, Dave Casper and Keith Jackson in the day, and Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten and Rob Gronkowski in more recent years.

But it's safe to say that Kelce has made what was long considered a decidedly unsexy position a lot more appealing, and in turn helped to make players such as Raiders tight end Darren Waller high-priced assets for their teams.

Waller has 16 catches for 175 yards and three scores heading into Monday night's game in Kansas City.

Make no mistake: Kelce still does plenty of down-in-the-dirt blocking, the stuff often overlooked and underappreciated, but that helped Kansas City run for nearly 200 yards in last week's 41-31 win at Tampa Bay. But he also makes plenty of those spectacular catches and long, loping downfield runs that makes Kelce a regular on the highlight reels.

"Everybody kind of giggles and laughs when you see (Mahomes) throw an underhand pass to a fullback or a shovel pass, or Kelce lines up at quarterback in the red zone and then runs the ball in, or runs an option, or shovel pass — whatever it is," Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels said.

"What's always impressed me is how precise they are and how detailed they are when they do those things. Look, players like to run things that are run. They enjoy that."

Nobody seems to enjoy it more than Kelce, who could sometimes come off as surly early in his career, especially when things weren't going his way. But while he still has a fiercely competitive streak, Kelce has matured as he aged, and what the Chiefs have now is a locker room leader who is just as good with fans and reporters as his teammates.

One that continues to etch his name in record books, too.

Kelce has caught a pass in 130 consecutive games, one behind Gonzalez for the second-longest streak in franchise history and the second-longest active streak behind DeAndre Hopkins in the NFL. Kelce has 730 catches in all, putting him within shouting distance of Witten's 806 for the most among tight ends over their first 10 seasons in the NFL.

Last week against the Buccaneers, Kelce had nine catches for 92 yards and a score, giving him 9,328 yards for his career and moving him past Gronkowski for fifth most among NFL tight ends.

Next on the list is Shannon Sharpe with 10,060, with Antonio Gates, Witten and Gonzalez the only others ahead of him.

What about touchdowns? Kelce has 63 of those, one behind Jamaal Charles for fourth on the Chiefs' career list.

It's not as if his production has tapered with age, either.

The pride of Westlake, Ohio, finished with 92 catches for 1,125 yards and nine touchdowns last season, his sixth straight eclipsing 1,000 yards.

And considering Kelce has three more years left on his contract after this one, and he insists that he plans to play it to completion or beyond, there is no reason to think more records won't fall.

"He is getting up there," Mahomes admitted. I'm going to try to keep him here as long as possible. I promise you. He's not taking any screens like, 80 yards anymore, I don't think. But he's still going to make some production on the field."

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan.—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted Kansas man after a traffic stop arrest.

Just after 11:30p.m. Oct. 6, a sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop near 118th and U.S. Highway 75 for a traffic violation, according to Sheriff Tim Morse. During the scope of the stop, it was believed the driver was providing false information about his identity. 

A possible ID was discovered for the subject, Michael E Burris III, 35, of Wichita, who had a nationwide extraditable warrant for aggravated assault, distribution of opiates and numerous other charges out of Reno, County. 

The subject’s identity was confirmed to be Burris. Deputies transported him to the Jackson County Jail and booked him on requested charges of felony interference for providing false information.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman for her role in an alleged domestic disturbance.

Just after 6:30 a.m. Oct. 5, police responded to a home in the 300 block of German Avenue in Haysville, according to a media release.

Officers learned there had been a disturbance between household members, resulting in a resident using a firearm inside the home.&nbsp;

Police arrested the suspect identified as 23-year-old Elizabeth&nbsp;Vanwilpe, according to the <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18828584">Sedgwick County booking report.</a>

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18828584">&nbsp;Vanwilpe remains in custody on </a>requested charges of attempted second-degree murder, an aggravated weapons violation, domestic violence, criminal damage to property and failure to appear, according to online jail records.

Kan. woman allegedly fired gun in a home during disturbance

Today in History - October 7

BOOM! Salina has begun and the first of the murals is in the books.

The mural, Three Kinds of Sons by Tony Sjöman, a Manhattan, N.Y.-based artist, is on the south wall of Mid-Kansas Title Co. Inc., 217 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Sjöman made it official by signing the art during a brief ceremony this morning. The mural was created with acrylic latex and spray paint on a brick wall and measures 90 feet by 32 feet.

The first BOOM! Salina Street Art and Mural Festival is going on now through Oct. 16 in downtown Salina. It is being organized by the Salina Kanvas Project in cooperation with Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, the Stiefel Theatre, Theatre Salina, Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, The Salina Art Center, Salina 2020, and Salina Downtown, Inc.

During the festival, additional artists will be painting murals at four other downtown Salina locations. In addition to the artists creating the murals, the festival also will include live music Oct. 14-15 at the Love Salina stage in Campbell Plaza.

Additionally, Martha Cooper, known as the godmother of street art photography, is scheduled to have an exhibition of her photographs at the Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Avenue, through Oct. 23.

Cooper is a documentary photographer specializing in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for more than 40 years, according to information on the <a href="https://www.boomsalina.art/">BOOM! Salina website</a>.

"In 1977, Martha moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer at the NY Post for three years. During that time she began to document graffiti and B-Boying, subjects which led to her extensive coverage of early Hip Hop as it emerged from the Bronx," the <a href="https://www.boomsalina.art/">BOOM! Salina website</a> noted.

In addition to the exhibition, the Salina Art Center Cinema, 150 S. Santa Fe Avenue, will screen a film about Cooper - Martha: A Picture Story - at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12. The cost is $6 per person.

A BOOM! Salina muralist panel discussion is scheduled to follow at 7:30 p.m. in the Salina Art Center.

2022 KVA Rankings: Week Five

GEARY COUNTY — A Kansas man accused in a weekend homicide has been extradited to a Kansas jail from St. Charles, Missouri, according to online jail records in Geary County.

Deputies booked 34-year-old Joshua J. Sturgis, 34, of Junction City on Wednesday evening.&nbsp; Sturgis was arrested on a Geary County District Court warrant charging him with 2nd Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.&nbsp;

Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the 900 block of North Washington in Junction City for a report of shots fired, according to a media release.

&nbsp;Upon arrival officers located&nbsp;38-year-old Justin J. Rose of Junction City suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS transported him to the Geary Community Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Following an extensive investigation, police identified 34-year-old Joshua Stugis as the primary suspect. Just before 8a.m. Sunday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol located and initiated a traffic stop on Sturgis for alleged driving while intoxicated in St. Charles County Missouri, according patrol.&nbsp;

Sturgis had been held in Saint Charles County Missouri on a $1,000,000 bond prior to extradition hearing.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic senators urged the Education Department on Wednesday to strengthen regulations against quietly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/school-suspension-special-education-adhd-3cda5e7b0e3080b0416bf879e190e849">excluding kids from class because of behaviors related to a disability</a>&nbsp;— a practice known as informal removal.

Since the pandemic began, parents of kids with disabilities say the practice is on the rise, denying their kids the legal right to an education. Disability rights advocates and legal experts say the removals likely circumvent protections for these children, who are not supposed to be disciplined because of their disability.

In a report Tuesday, The Associated Press and The Hechinger Report documented the impact of these informal removals on children and families. In&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/school-suspension-special-education-adhd-3cda5e7b0e3080b0416bf879e190e849">interviews with 20 families in 10 states</a>, parents said they were called repeatedly, sometimes less than an hour into the school day, to pick up their children. Some said they left work so frequently they lost their jobs.

The Education Department in May said it intended to strengthen protections for students with disabilities. It's considering regulatory amendments to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which protects people from being discriminated against based on their disability.

The department also issued guidance to schools in July advising against discriminatory practices in discipline for students with disabilities. That guidance defined informal removals as an action taken by school staff in response to a child’s behavior that removes the child for part or all of the school day, or even indefinitely.

In a letter to the Education Department, U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both from Illinois, urged that practice be formally defined in regulation and included as a form of prohibited, discriminatory action.

“Informal removals not only restrict children’s personal growth and decrease their likelihood of graduating, but they also are discriminatory,” the letter said. “Federal and state laws and regulations, including Section 504, were intended to eliminate the segregation of students with disabilities.”

Students are protected by federal law from being repeatedly taken out of the classroom for disability-related behaviors. After 10 suspensions, families of disabled children are entitled to a review of whether the behaviors are a result of the child's disability. If so, schools are supposed to make adjustments, such as providing additional accommodations or considering a change in placement.

But when the removals are not recorded, those protections are not always triggered, and families may not know they have recourse. The department's July guidance made clear students who are informally removed have the same rights as those who are officially suspended, including to the review process.

The senators noted formal removals, such as documented suspensions and expulsions, lead to a loss of 11 million instructional hours per year. Many schools have promised to cut down on suspensions, since kids can’t learn as well when they aren’t in class.

But because informal removals are not recorded, the full scope of their impact on children remains unclear.

“In some cases, informal removals may result in students with disabilities missing months and even years of classroom instruction,” the senators wrote. “Missing school also deprives children of other important services, such as access to free lunch, referrals to outside services, medical care, evaluation services, access to a library and playground, extracurricular activities, and a sense of community and belonging.”

Just before 3a.m. Oct. 4, police served a narcotics search warrant on a vehicle during a traffic stop in the 700 Block SW Fairlawn in Topeka, according to Police Captain Jerry Monasmith.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Officers located methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, marijuana, forgery documents and a firearm.

As a result 40-year-old Corey Scales and 35-year-old Candace Scales both of Topeka were transported to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Corey Scales was booked on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine with the intent of distribution, Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon,&nbsp;Aggravated endangering a child; Reckless Situation and Possession of marijuana.

Candace Scales is being held on Possession of methamphetamine with the intent of distribution, Criminal possession of a weapon by a felon, Aggravated endangering a child; Reckless Situation, Possession of drug paraphernalia with intent of distribution and Forgery.

Schmidt's approach recalls a strategy that helped Republican Glenn Youngkin win over suburban parents and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-education-parental-rights-school-curricula-604edece27a483155c409187f258a058">triumph in the 2021 governor's race</a>&nbsp;in normally blue Virginia. He's also pounding on the incumbent, saying Kelly allowed students to be “locked out of schools” for months during the coronavirus pandemic.

Kelly, a target for the national GOP, takes credit for Kansas increasing its spending on K-12 schools&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/16d63062f0a645f6a9231e22b623e9fb">enough to satisfy multiple state Supreme Court rulings</a>&nbsp;in a lawsuit filed against the state in 2010. Schmidt has said that as governor he would ensure the state keeps spending enough money, but as attorney general, he defended past Republican school funding laws that the court declared insufficient under the Kansas Constitution.

“You know, I have a hard time being lectured by you on public schools,” Kelly told Schmidt during their debate in the Kansas City suburbs, sponsored by the local association for attorneys.

Kelly has tried to tie Schmidt to former GOP Gov. Sam Brownback, who launched a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/f5741d8d0d8c40979857c9d2d6afae9f">nationally notorious experiment</a>&nbsp;in cutting state income taxes in 2012-13 that was followed by large, persistent budget deficits. Most of the experiment was repealed in 2017, and the state's finances have improved dramatically since.

Kelly supports medical marijuana.Schmidt, who supported a proposed anti-abortion amendment to the Kansas Constitution that voters decisively rejected in August, challenged Kelly to name a restriction she would support. Under Kelly, spending has grown almost twice as fast as under her Republican predecessors.Increases in spending before Kelly took office in January 2019 were forced by Kansas Supreme Court rulings — as the court repeatedly rejected arguments from Schmidt's office that lawmakers were doing enough to meet their duty under the state constitution to finance a suitable education for every child.“Everybody remembers what the state looked like four years ago," Kelly said.
