Mark G. Maciejewski, age 61, of Concordia, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Park Villa Nursing Home, Clyde, Kansas.&nbsp; Mark was born on January 21, 1961 in Loup City, Nebraska to Francis J. and Gladys A. (Dzingle) Maciejewski.

Mark graduated from Central Catholic High School, Grand Island, NE in 1979.&nbsp; He attended Central Community College, Hastings in the auto-body tech program.&nbsp; He moved to Concordia, KS in 1988 to begin working for Boogaarts grocery as a manager.&nbsp; He later worked for environmental services for Cloud County Health Center until his health made it unable for him to work.

Mark married Elizabeth “Beth” Hinson on October 28, 1989 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia, KS.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia, KS.&nbsp; 

Mark loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing.&nbsp; His pride and joy were his granddaughters and spending time with them and his nieces, nephews, and family events, especially the annual Maciejewski pierogi party.

Mark is survived by his wife Beth, K.C, MO; son Adam Maciejewski (Tiera), K.C., MO; grandchildren Jaiden and Lennox Maciejewski; mother Gladys Maciejewski, Grand Island, NE; brothers David Maciejewski (Stephanie), Omaha, NE and Paul Maciejewski, Grand Island, NE; and sister Pam Benner (Kirk), Lincoln, NE.

He was preceded in death by his father Francis and a brother, Jay Maciejewski.

The family selected cremation and a memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 4, 2022 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia with Pastor Dwight Whitead officiating.&nbsp; Private family burial cremains will follow at St. Concordia Cemetery.&nbsp; Friends may sign the register book on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 1-8 p.m. with the family greeting from 6-8 p.m. all at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.

A Salina man wanted on a state parole warrant also was arrested on drug charges after an incident Monday morning in the central part of the city.

Officers were sent to the 800 block of E. Crawford at 9:25 a.m. Monday for the report of a man with a large knife in his back pocket walking in the street and acting evasive, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

When they arrived, they found Justin I. Howard, 26, of Salina, who had an active arrest and detain state parole warrant. When Howard was taken into custody, police found him to be in possession of multiple knives and a bag of what was suspected to be methamphetamine, Hanus said.

Howard was booked into the Saline County Jail on the warrant and the following requested charges, according to the jail daily booking activity report.

Salina man arrested on requested drug charges after Monday incident

TOPEKA (AP) — The online commercials in a state Senate race in some Raleigh, North Carolina, suburbs make an ominous claim, similar to one repeated across the country ahead of the Nov. 8 election: The Republican candidate “wants to strip away our reproductive rights.”

The Republican, Mark Cavaliero, says the Planned Parenthood-affiliated political action committee behind the ads is misrepresenting his views, which he says stop short of endorsing a complete abortion ban in one of the Southern states with the fewest abortion restrictions. “There should be some limit,” he said in an interview. “Where that limit is is up for discussion.”

The same theme is echoing in elections across the country in the first nationwide election since the U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that protected the right to abortion nationally.

Now, it's a state-by-state question that's the subject of ballot measures in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-south-carolina-general-lindsey-graham-d81ce581ab1a4c1e4af0ed3991796fdd">some states</a>&nbsp;and is a major issue in many elections across the U.S. on Nov. 8. Outcomes of elections for governors, state lawmakers, supreme court justices and attorneys general could determine abortion access. Beyond that, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-south-carolina-general-lindsey-graham-d81ce581ab1a4c1e4af0ed3991796fdd">nationwide ban</a>&nbsp;on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy has been proposed in Congress.

Abortion-rights groups and Democratic candidates are sounding alarms that Republicans would curtail access. Republicans, even those who have supported abortion bans, are campaigning mostly about other issues, including inflation and crime.

Still, it's clear that certain Republican victories could result in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-us-supreme-court-health-32f106503dad6d0407003971ea828262">abortion restrictions</a>.

“We’ve got states like Kansas, Pennsylvania, even Georgia, and Wisconsin where the governor's races or state legislature races could determine perhaps where these states go on abortion rights, even though abortion isn't directly on the ballot,” said Linda Goler Blount, president of the Black Women's Health Imperative.

Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee, also says results from the election will shape abortion policy. “If Republicans are elected, we may be able to pass some measures," she said in an interview.

In North Carolina, where both chambers of the legislature are under GOP control, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has twice vetoed bills that would have restricted abortion, which is currently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-north-carolina-government-and-politics-59ec5074eb84f16aa614276c7c3fa24d">barred after 20 weeks of pregnancy</a>, with narrow exceptions for urgent medical emergencies for the pregnant woman.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-us-supreme-court-religion-campaigns-860e5e27dc3301140fabd8a8462868c2">equation could change</a>&nbsp;if Republicans can pick up two more seats in the state Senate and three in the House, giving the party enough members to override vetoes from Cooper, whose term runs another two years.

That’s why Planned Parenthood Action PAC North Carolina has been airing ads targeting Cavaliero and other Republicans in districts where voting margins are expected to be tight. It's part of a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-health-congress-71871318f3c725a7df0bbe183e6c84be">nationwide campaign</a>&nbsp;that planned to spend $50 million.

Democratic incumbent Sydney Batch recounted at a recent campaign event about how, when she was in the state House in 2019, she was present to vote against a veto override even though she was recovering from a mastectomy.

“My colleagues and I will continue to show up because we believe that medical decisions and bodily autonomy of every woman in North Carolina should be in their hands,” she said.

Cavaliero said he doesn't want to ban abortion entirely and is not the “anti-abortion extremist” that the ad calls him.

“I take a very reasonable position,” he said. “I feel like at some point during the pregnancy, abortion becomes a real problem.”

While Republican lawmakers in North Carolina have supported restricting abortion, there’s no consensus on how to do it.

That's been a theme since June's U.S. Supreme Court ruling made bans into realities, leaving even abortion opponents divided on details.

The two states where lawmakers have passed new bans since June —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-indiana-legislature-9dda020bf811f19e6254915ca1324edc">Indiana</a>, where enforcement is on hold amid a legal challenge, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-legislature-west-virginia-85283cf498eee8c116d3f1cc8de4a0fb">West Virginia</a>&nbsp;— did so only after debates that led to including exceptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-congress-government-and-politics-fc8c68d1c4dd29ef0a364050013b8cf4">Polling has shown</a>&nbsp;that most voters want abortion to remain legal. That was reflected in the first election on the issue since Roe was overturned, when&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-primary-elections-kansas-abortion-b6d62a852c2ce4617f2c03589fbb523e">Kansas voters rejected a ballot measure</a>&nbsp;in August that would have allowed lawmakers to tighten restrictions or ban abortion.

Kansas Democrats are rallying voters by focusing on abortion access.

At a recent meeting in the town of Wamego, local Democrats wrote postcards to voters urging them to protect abortion rights. Kathy Swenson, a 71-year-old retired teacher, summarized the message: “If you think your rights are protected just because of Aug. 2, you’re wrong.”

Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat in a state where Republicans control the Legislature, is seeking re-election. Her Republican opponent,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-presidential-legislature-cd8d1d6f24da4612b7faeb325a4611bf">Derek Schmidt,</a>&nbsp;and the GOP candidate for attorney general, Kris Kobach, have promised to defend existing restrictions against any court challenges.

Three years after a state supreme court ruling that found the Kansas Constitution protects abortion rights,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-topeka-government-and-politics-e6e0ddbbb45e99deef0165eb16576c5d">Kansans for Life</a>&nbsp;is urging supporters to vote against retaining five of the six justices who are on the ballot.

Also being closely watched is the governor's race in Arizona, where a ban on abortions after 15 weeks' gestation is in effect while courts decide whether to allow enforcement of a law that would ban abortions at all stages of pregnancy.

In Pennsylvania, the election of a new governor could keep the status quo -- abortions allowed up to 24 weeks -- or install a Republican-controlled government that would be expected to roll back abortion rights. The current governor, Democrat Tom Wolf, has vetoed restrictions passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature.

Democratic candidate Josh Shapiro has made abortion access a prominent feature of his campaign, raising it at a recent event with union members in Philadelphia. “The other side, they love to talk a good game about freedom, right?” Shapiro said. “Let me tell you something: it’s not freedom to tell women what they’re allowed to do with their bodies.”

Republican Doug Mastriano used his opposition to abortion to help win the primary, saying “life” was the most important issue. He has downplayed that view during the general election campaign, dropping it from his stump speech and handing the microphone to his wife, Rebecca, to bring it up.

“As conservatives, as Republicans we very much believe in women’s rights,” she told a rally in Erie in October. “In fact, we carry the torch on that. First of all, we believe in a woman’s right to be born.”

Since the Supreme Court ruling, bans on abortion at any stage of pregnancy have been adopted or kicked in in a dozen states. In a 13th, Wisconsin, clinics have stopped providing abortions amid uncertainty about whether an 1849 ban applies.

There, Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-politics-wisconsin-donald-trump-2979751251868875a188e77b81eaac16">suing</a>&nbsp;to overturn the ban — a move supported by the Democratic governor, Tony Evers. Both are up for election this year in a state where Republicans control the Legislature.

The GOP candidate for governor, Tim Michels, supported the ban during the primary. He now says that if he's elected,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-abortion-arrests-donald-trump-milwaukee-389322e5a0194dbb6725288e0296c0d2">he would sign a bill granting exceptions</a>&nbsp;for pregnancies caused by rape or incest.

In liberal Oregon, one of a handful of states with no abortion restrictions, the issue looms large in the gubernatorial election.

Republican Christine Drazan says she would follow the law if elected governor in a state that has helped fund abortion care for women throughout the Northwest.

In a September&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-2022-midterm-elections-oregon-campaigns-f6a39797a3cd6c52c25c0dd76e485b31">debate</a>, Democrat Tina Kotek said that's not enough.

“A governor can do a lot of damage even if there’s a law on the books: stopping agencies, not being a champion, not moving resources to help Oregonians," she said.

Today in History - November 1

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Sedgwick County Jail.

Just after 7:30a.m. Monday, jail staff found inmate who was unresponsive in a housing unit of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Medical staff responded to the scene. The fire department and emergency medical services (E.M.S.) were also dispatched to the scene. Shortly after their arrival, the inmate identified as 40-year-old Michael Patrick O'Neil was pronounced deceased. 

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigation’s Unit and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (K.B.I.) were notified of the in-custody death.

The Investigation’s Division and K.B.I. processed the scene. An autopsy is pending at the Forensic Science Center.&nbsp; O’Neill&nbsp; was booked in custody on August 23, 2022 for aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and theft, according to Blick. This is the fifth in-custody death in 2022.

Sheriff: 40-year-old inmate found dead in Kan. county jail cell

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments concerning affirmative action on Monday, October 31 and will rule before the end of June, 2023. Most news outlets are portraying the arguments for and against affirmative action to be a liberal-conservative issue focused on providing equity in educational access across various racial groups. This is not correct.

According to a poll by The Washington Post and George Mason University’s Schar School of Public Policy and Government, over 60 percent of respondents support eliminating race as a factor in college admissions. However, a similar percent also support programs that would increase racial diversity among college students, and recognize that having a diverse population on campuses is a good way for college students to understand others. And yet, 60 percent also did not consider it important that the student body of a state university match the state’s racial and ethnic proportions.

California would be considered a liberal state today, and it did have an affirmative action policy to maintain relatively proportional representation of various races and ethnic groups on state university campuses until 1996. Then Proposition 209 ended affirmative action in college admissions. Affirmative action had severely suppressed Asian-American enrollments and the result of removing it resulted in Asians being “over-represented” at universities in California, with nearly triple their share of high school graduates. A more recent Proposition 16 would have reinstated affirmative action in California college admissions—it failed to pass.

A recent Chronicle of Higher Education article included myriad graphs comparing the academic factors affecting white versus “under-represented minority” student groups, but failing to mention that there was one minority, the Asian-American students, who were over-represented in our state schools nationwide. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Today’s Education Schools refuse to admit that there is cultural variation in the extent various sub-groups value education. Asian-American students, despite being here for many generations, maintain a very high regard for education, called an educational “success frame.” Not 100 percent feel this parental expectation—where an “A-minus” is an Asian “F”—but it is well-documented and classroom teachers recognize it as well in most of their Asian-heritage students.&nbsp; Jennifer Lee and Min Zhou detail this “success frame” in “The Asian American Achievement Paradox.” &nbsp;

Lee and Zhou also interviewed Hispanic, African-American, and working class white Americans in addition to Asian-Americans and found wide variations in cultural expectations of education. White working class families mostly have very low educational expectations for their children.

Recent arguments for affirmative action have been put forth in several books and articles asserting that the use of tests promotes a “myth of meritocracy,” and for the most part, it is merely helping the rich get their children into college by way of extra test-prep tutoring.

There is an irony in this argument, because the early Western world was ruled by a bureaucracy based on “patronage” where the rich became governmental functionaries without much education. That changed when the West adopted civil service examinations based on—you might guess it—a much older system of governmental exams established in China under the Sui Dynasty in AD 605. Such testing offered a route for children of the poor to have social mobility through education.

However, it would not be until the British Northcote–Trevelyan Report of 1854 that Her Majesty's Civil Service would be established, based on civil service exams, in part motivated by the chaos that occurred due to bureaucratic management of the Crimean War at that time!

This current U.S. Supreme Court will closely examine in detail the prior 2013 ruling on affirmative action in Fisher v. University of Texas. Yes, the court allowed affirmative action to stand, but it placed a burden on universities to prove that no viable race-neutral alternatives are available when the university uses racial preferences in admissions to increase diversity.

This is not a left-versus-right battle, but a return to rewarding those students, who study hard and demonstrate their knowledge and skills, the opportunity to move ahead in education and not be replaced by students with less study ethic. The future of a country depends on advancing its very best students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today in History - October 30

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after an incident with a firearm.

Just after 1a.m. Friday, police were dispatched to Pops Sports Bar, 212 W. Fulton Street Suite B in Garden City for a report of a man with a firearm, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers observed&nbsp; 25-year-old Avery McCulloch of Meade in front of the business with a firearm in his hand and instructed McCulloch to drop the weapon.

 McCulloch dropped the firearm but became non-compliant with officers before being taken into custody. 

The investigation revealed that McCulloch was at Pops Sports Bar when he became belligerent and elbowed a patron in the face. Staff kicked McCulloch out of the bar, and when he stepped outside, McCulloch pulled out a firearm. 

A witness told officers they observed McCulloch load and brandish the firearm. The witness called police. 

McCulloch was transported to St. Catherine Hospital for evaluation and later booked into the Finney County Jail on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Interference LEO, Battery, Disorderly Conduct• Possession of a Firearm Under the Influence.

Police: Man pulls gun after getting kicked out of SW Kansas bar

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WRi6iZAl-I">desperately waving at his home run to stay in play</a>. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Kirk Gibson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZzGkoXlaTM">pumping his arms</a>
 as he hobbles around second base after muscling a home run off Dennis 
Eckersley, the Oakland A’s dominant closer. The ground ball hit by New 
York Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpyJjecJnuI">skipping through the legs</a> of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner.

Some of the most dramatic images in World Series history are 
ingrained in the minds of baseball fans thanks to television coverage. 
This year’s World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston 
Astros will surely bring another timeless highlight to the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/03/2021-world-series-ratings-braves-astros-game-6-draws-14point3-million.html">12 million or so viewers</a> expected to watch.

Yet the first 43 World Series weren’t televised at all. It wasn’t 
until the 1947 series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers –
 75 years ago – that fans could watch their favorite players duke it out
 on screen. 

As I detail in my book “<a href="https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/bison-original/9780803248250/">Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television</a>,”
 which I co-authored with Robert Bellamy, the telecasts became a 
sensation. They drew millions of Americans to a new medium at a time 
when there were no national networks, only a handful of stations and 
somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 TVs in the entire country.

In August 1947, the television industry anticipated a possible 
all-New York World Series: The Yankees had a huge lead in the American 
League, while the Dodgers also held a substantial one in the National 
League.  

If the two teams met in October, New York’s three television stations – run by NBC ABC, and the now-extinct <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/DuMont-Television-Network">DuMont</a> – decided they wanted to cover the games.

But the rights to televise the games were held by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mutual-Broadcasting-System">Mutual Broadcasting System</a>,
 a radio network that had no television division. Thus, Mutual would 
need to farm out the coverage to one or more New York stations.

Although no national television network existed at the time, NBC, 
DuMont and CBS did have the means to link stations on the Eastern 
Seaboard through a combination of coaxial cable, microwave and 
over-the-air broadcast transmissions, expanding the potential audience 
for the World Series. The Series would air on eight stations in four 
markets: New York City, Philadelphia, Washington and Schenectady, New 
York.

While the Yankees-Dodgers series materialized, the televising of the Series almost didn’t. 

The predictable stumbling block was money. Baseball commissioner <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/chandler-happy">Albert B. “Happy” Chandler</a>
 wanted $100,000 for the television rights to the Series. Gillette, the 
sponsor of the radio coverage on the Mutual Broadcasting System, balked 
at the steep price given television’s limited penetration – only 50,000 
to 60,000 U.S. households owned TVs at the time. The radio rights to 
reach the nation’s 29 million homes with radios had cost Mutual only 
$175,000.

Initial negotiations produced an offer of $60,000 from two sponsors: Gillette and the Ford Motor Company. New York’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Liebmann">Liebmann Breweries</a>
 offered to meet Chandler’s $100,000 demand, but the commissioner 
refused because he did not want beer ads when youngsters would be 
prominent members of the audience.

Even before a coverage deal had been finalized, bars, restaurants, 
television dealers, department stores, automobile dealerships and movie 
theaters started advertising the event, urging customers to come by to 
watch the World Series on television. And in the days and weeks leading 
up to the Fall Classic, the demand for television sets spiked. 

The excitement pressured Chandler and the sponsors to reach a compromise.   

Finally, on Sept. 26, just four days before Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, Chandler, Gillette and Ford <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-BC/BC-1947/1947-10-06-BC.pdf">agreed to $65,000 for the rights to televise the World Series</a>.
 Production costs added another $35,000 to the sponsors’ bill. Mutual, 
Gillette and Ford also agreed to allow all three New York TV stations 
and those connected to them to broadcast the game, providing the widest 
possible exposure.

Initial industry estimates had the Series reaching between 600,000 
and 700,000 viewers, many of them located in the bars and restaurants 
where a substantial number of the nation’s first television receivers 
were located.  

But that forecast ended up being conservative. Although home viewing for the seven games was substantial – 450,000 in a <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-18.pdf">Hooper rating survey commissioned by Billboard</a>
 – the out-of-home viewing numbers were extraordinary: Another 3.5 
million were estimated to have viewed the World Series in public 
locales.

Hooper’s survey found that an average of 82 customers showed up at 
each of these public locations to watch at least some of the World 
Series. Variety reported that bar owners saw a 500% increase in patrons 
during the Series, with some offering reservations to their regulars for
 a choice location near the TV set.

What viewers from those choice seats saw was primitive by today’s 
standards. The screen was usually small – 12 diagonal inches or less. 
The low-definition images were black and white and came from just a few 
cameras. No extreme close-ups were possible. There was no instant 
replay, so fans had to pay attention or the moment was lost. 

But for the first time, they were seeing the World Series live, and for free.

The audience liked what they saw. <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-11.pdf">Billboard</a>,
 quoting The Newark Evening News, reported that TV “audiences hung on 
every turn of the video cameras and the ‘oohs and aahs’ at a slide or 
strikeout were something radio broadcasters would give their eye teeth 
to hear.”

It didn’t hurt that <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1947_WS.shtml">the 1947 World Series</a> ended up being so dramatic. The Yankees prevailed in seven games, but Brooklyn owned the two greatest moments.

In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Dodgers pitch hitter <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWjpOAy5zCM">Cookie Lavagetto ended Yankee starter Bill Biven’s no-hit bid</a> with a two-out hit, driving in two runs and sending the Dodgers to a 3-2 win. Then, in Game 6, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SrtxVs8uMI">Al Gionfriddo’s stunning catch of Joe DiMaggio’s deep drive to left field</a> helped preserve an 8-6 Dodgers victory, leading legendary Dodgers broadcaster <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Red_Barber.html?id=lWhgEAAAQBAJ">Red Barber</a> to exclaim, “Oh, Doctor!”

The Washington broadcasts even reached the White House, where 
President Harry S. Truman, his staff and the D.C. press corps watched

 reported an enthusiastic response from the White House viewers: “If TV 
can do as good a job as that on perhaps the most difficult of all 
subjects to televise, then it really has arrived.”

The public’s embrace of the World Series on television, along with 
the generous coverage of the telecasts by the press, provided an 
important boost to the nascent television industry. The Sporting News 
reported that the first televised World Series increased sales for new 
receivers in New York to levels not seen since the early days of radio. 
Similar reports came from dealers in Washington and Philadelphia.

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Sarnoff">David Sarnoff</a>,
 chairman of RCA – which owed NBC and was a leading manufacturer of 
receivers – regarded television’s coverage of baseball and its crowning 
event, the World Series, as one of the most important factors in 
triggering the growth of the new medium.

Television makers, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Center_Field_Shot.html?id=6kPQhpS-X8YC">he concluded</a>,
 “had to have baseball games and if [baseball owners] had demanded 
millions for the rights, we would have had to give it to them.”

The television industry eventually did pay millions and then billions for those rights. <a href="https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2018/11/15/Media/MLB-Fox.aspx">Fox’s latest seven-year contract</a>, including rights to the World Series, pays Major League Baseball $5.1 billion.

Happy Chandler’s 1947 demand for a $100,000 seems like quite a bargain today.

York Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpyJjecJnuI">skipping through the legs</a> of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. Some of the most dramatic images in World Series history are 
ingrained in the minds of baseball fans thanks to television coverage. 
This year’s World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston 
Astros will surely bring another timeless highlight to the <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/03/2021-world-series-ratings-braves-astros-game-6-draws-14point3-million.html">12 million or so viewers</a> expected to watch. Yet the first 43 World Series weren’t televised at all. It wasn’t 
until the 1947 series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers –
 75 years ago – that fans could watch their favorite players duke it out
 on screen. As I detail in my book “<a href="https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/bison-original/9780803248250/">Center Field Shot: A History of Baseball on Television</a>,”
 which I co-authored with Robert Bellamy, the telecasts became a 
sensation. They drew millions of Americans to a new medium at a time 
when there were no national networks, only a handful of stations and 
somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 TVs in the entire country.<h2>Negotiations go down to the wire</h2>In August 1947, the television industry anticipated a possible 
all-New York World Series: The Yankees had a huge lead in the American 
League, while the Dodgers also held a substantial one in the National 
League. If the two teams met in October, New York’s three television stations – run by NBC ABC, and the now-extinct <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/DuMont-Television-Network">DuMont</a> – decided they wanted to cover the games.But the rights to televise the games were held by the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mutual-Broadcasting-System">Mutual Broadcasting System</a>,
 a radio network that had no television division. Thus, Mutual would 
need to farm out the coverage to one or more New York stations. Although no national television network existed at the time, NBC, 
DuMont and CBS did have the means to link stations on the Eastern 
Seaboard through a combination of coaxial cable, microwave and 
over-the-air broadcast transmissions, expanding the potential audience 
for the World Series. The Series would air on eight stations in four 
markets: New York City, Philadelphia, Washington and Schenectady, New 
York.While the Yankees-Dodgers series materialized, the televising of the Series almost didn’t. The predictable stumbling block was money. Baseball commissioner <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/chandler-happy">Albert B. “Happy” Chandler</a>
 wanted $100,000 for the television rights to the Series. Gillette, the 
sponsor of the radio coverage on the Mutual Broadcasting System, balked 
at the steep price given television’s limited penetration – only 50,000 
to 60,000 U.S. households owned TVs at the time. The radio rights to 
reach the nation’s 29 million homes with radios had cost Mutual only 
$175,000. Initial negotiations produced an offer of $60,000 from two sponsors: Gillette and the Ford Motor Company. New York’s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Liebmann">Liebmann Breweries</a>
 offered to meet Chandler’s $100,000 demand, but the commissioner 
refused because he did not want beer ads when youngsters would be 
prominent members of the audience.Even before a coverage deal had been finalized, bars, restaurants, 
television dealers, department stores, automobile dealerships and movie 
theaters started advertising the event, urging customers to come by to 
watch the World Series on television. And in the days and weeks leading 
up to the Fall Classic, the demand for television sets spiked. The excitement pressured Chandler and the sponsors to reach a compromise. Finally, on Sept. 26, just four days before Game 1 at Yankee Stadium, Chandler, Gillette and Ford <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-BC/BC-1947/1947-10-06-BC.pdf">agreed to $65,000 for the rights to televise the World Series</a>.
 Production costs added another $35,000 to the sponsors’ bill. Mutual, 
Gillette and Ford also agreed to allow all three New York TV stations 
and those connected to them to broadcast the game, providing the widest 
possible exposure.<h2>An unexpectedly strong response</h2>Initial industry estimates had the Series reaching between 600,000 
and 700,000 viewers, many of them located in the bars and restaurants 
where a substantial number of the nation’s first television receivers 
were located. But that forecast ended up being conservative. Although home viewing for the seven games was substantial – 450,000 in a <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-18.pdf">Hooper rating survey commissioned by Billboard</a>
 – the out-of-home viewing numbers were extraordinary: Another 3.5 
million were estimated to have viewed the World Series in public 
locales. Hooper’s survey found that an average of 82 customers showed up at 
each of these public locations to watch at least some of the World 
Series. Variety reported that bar owners saw a 500% increase in patrons 
during the Series, with some offering reservations to their regulars for
 a choice location near the TV set.What viewers from those choice seats saw was primitive by today’s 
standards. The screen was usually small – 12 diagonal inches or less. 
The low-definition images were black and white and came from just a few 
cameras. No extreme close-ups were possible. There was no instant 
replay, so fans had to pay attention or the moment was lost. But for the first time, they were seeing the World Series live, and for free.<h2>The TV industry’s World Series bump</h2>The audience liked what they saw. <a href="https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Billboard/40s/1947/BB-1947-10-11.pdf">Billboard</a>,
 quoting The Newark Evening News, reported that TV “audiences hung on 
every turn of the video cameras and the ‘oohs and aahs’ at a slide or 
strikeout were something radio broadcasters would give their eye teeth 
to hear.” It didn’t hurt that <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1947_WS.shtml">the 1947 World Series</a> ended up being so dramatic. The Yankees prevailed in seven games, but Brooklyn owned the two greatest moments.In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, Dodgers pitch hitter <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWjpOAy5zCM">Cookie Lavagetto ended Yankee starter Bill Biven’s no-hit bid</a> with a two-out hit, driving in two runs and sending the Dodgers to a 3-2 win. Then, in Game 6, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SrtxVs8uMI">Al Gionfriddo’s stunning catch of Joe DiMaggio’s deep drive to left field</a> helped preserve an 8-6 Dodgers victory, leading legendary Dodgers broadcaster <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Red_Barber.html?id=lWhgEAAAQBAJ">Red Barber</a> to exclaim, “Oh, Doctor!”<figure>

🎥 First televised World Series game sparked America's TV boom

Ronald “Ron” Legleiter, age 77, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022, in Overland Park. Ron was born August 9, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, to Julius and Olivia (Befort) Legleiter. Ron was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy. On April 19, 1965, he married Helen (Gottschalk) Legleiter in Hays. She preceded him in death on August 31, 2015. Ron worked for UPS where he drove a semi for over 25 years.&nbsp; He also managed their short-term disability fund.&nbsp; He was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus, enjoyed mowing at the City of Overland Park golf course after retiring from UPS, golfing, spending time with his grandkids - and rarely missed any of their activities and sporting events, and he enjoyed listening to polka music. He was a US Army veteran serving during peacetime and he was a member of Ascension Catholic Church in Overland Park. Ron is survived by sons, Eric Legleiter and wife Becky of Piedmont, OK, Jamie Legleiter of Des Moines, IA, and Michael Legleiter, of Omaha, NE; and daughter, Jennifer Durham and husband Ben of Overland Park, KS; a sister, Firma Schmidt and husband Gary of Ft.  — Joseph Earl Brueggemann had green eyes, sandy brown hair and loved 
fishing. He left behind a 15-year-old daughter and beloved elderly cat 
when he died on the floor of the Sedgwick County Jail at age 38, alone 
and with an untreated skull fracture.

“He didn’t deserve this,” his mother, Pat Brueggemann said. “He did not deserve what happened to him.”

Preliminary autopsy results 
determined that Joseph Brueggemann’s cause of death on Aug. 24 was from a
 heart attack caused by a blood clot. Pat Brueggemann said she had a lot
 of concerns about the way he died and how he was treated in the jail, 
especially about the medication given to him and the jail’s treatment of
 his mental health issues.

Col. Jared Schechter, jail administrator, said the facility prioritized medical care, but with a
 staffing shortage of almost 100 people and limited mental health 
resources, the jail struggles to provide everyone with needed treatment.

Schechter said he couldn’t speak to the specifics of the Brueggemann case but gave an overview of the struggles the jail faces.&nbsp;

“We’re not a mental health treatment 
facility and our resources do become stretched thin with the amount of 
inmates that we do have,” Schechter said. “We try to prioritize 
everybody we can see and get them the access they need and help they 
need but they are still stretched thin with mental health needs in the 
jail.”

Pat Brueggemann said her son was 
taken to jail after an altercation with his father. After three days 
without hearing from him, his family searched the jail database and the 
nearby hospitals, without luck. Pat Brueggemann eventually found him 
listed under a misspelled name in the Sedgwick County Jail system.

Pat Brueggemann said jail officials 
told her that her son spent six days in a detox pod without incident, 
before becoming erratic and aggressive on Aug. 17. He was moved to a 
temporary disciplinary cell where he dove head first into the ground, 
causing a skull fracture. Pat Brueggemann said his cell window was 
covered with paper, so he couldn’t see out and guards couldn’t see in.

said. “Because if you saw that video, you would clearly see that his 
behavior was manic after six days of normalcy. I mean, he did things 
like jumping over a desk and trying to get out of the area he was in. 
And of course the skull fracture, how he just threw himself right on the
 floor.”He spent the next seven days alone in
 a disciplinary pod. On Aug. 24, he told the detention officer that he 
didn’t feel well, and was left alone for the next five hours. He was 
found motionless a little after noon and confirmed dead shortly after.Schechter said the jail policy is to 
check in on inmates every one to two hours, but the worker shortages 
made it difficult to fulfill this policy.“With staffing shortages, it does make it hard sometimes to hit every mark with the rounds,” Schechter said.Pat Brueggemann said she didn’t 
believe her son was getting the right treatment, or any mental health 
help. She said she was given conflicting reports of which medication he 
was taking while in jail, especially since he had a seizure within the 
first three days of incarceration. She said that hadn’t happened since 
he started anti-seizure medication years ago.The first report she received from 
the KBI had all of his medications listed, which included Xanax, Zoloft,
 anti-seizure medication, pain relievers and blood clot medication. She 
then received a second report saying he was only taking three 
medications, generic Depakote, magnesium sulfate and acetaminophen.Schechter said he couldn’t release confidential medical information on Joseph’s medication or head injury.“He had been on Xanax and Seroquel 
for many years to help control his mental health issues and he was not 
given those in jail. And there’s no way that he would not tell them that
 he needed those meds because he did,” Pat Brueggemann said.She said she never got an explanation
 of why the reports had conflicting data. She is trying to get an 
attorney in order to obtain her son’s medical records.“There’s obviously lack of care, lack
 of education, lack of training, and somebody needs to look into it,” 
Pat Brueggemann said. “Inmates are people too. One of them was my son.”Schechter said mental health 
treatment is difficult to address, with limited resources and an 
estimated 30-35% of inmates having serious mental health problems.“We
 struggle with mental health care in the jail for a lot of reasons,” 
Schechter said. “The first reason is we’re not a treatment facility. 
We’re not built to be a treatment facility. We do the best we can to 
provide resources and help and programming for mental health inmates. 
The next problem we run into is that we can’t force inmates to take 
medication.”Schechter said around 70 to 80 people
 are booked into the jail daily, with each person given a full medical 
assessment or mental health assessment, detox assessment and suicide 
risk assessment within four hours. The jail currently has around 1,400 
inmates. The jail’s capacity is 1,500 inmates.&nbsp;He said there were sometimes issues 
with getting incarcerated people their medication because the jail 
needed medical records, doctors or pharmacy information to confirm which
 medications an inmate should receive.“It makes it difficult that the 
inmate can’t tell us which pharmacy to fax a release to or which 
doctor’s office to contact or confirm things. It just makes things 
difficult, which can cause delays in that,” Schechter said.Pat Brueggemann said the system needed to be changed.“I’ll never get over this,” she said.
 “There will never be a totally happy day in my life ever again. I just 
want somebody to do something before they have another jail death. It’s 
not right. Something’s not right.”
