LAWRENCE — Texas standout Bijan Robinson ran through, over and around Kansas for a career-high 243 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday, helping the Longhorns earn a measure of revenge with a frigid 55-14 victory.

Now, Robinson and his buddies are suddenly the Jayhawks' biggest fans.

The Longhorns, who lost a 57-56 overtime thriller to Kansas a year ago in Austin, need to knock off Baylor next week while getting some help from the team they just trounced. The Jayhawks must beat Kansas State in their rivalry game for Texas to play fourth-ranked TCU for the Big 12 championship in Arlington.

"We've got a bunch of fighters. We have a great deal of resiliency. These guys have showed an unbelievable amount of perseverance, and I told them that in the locker room," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. "I was proud of them. I was very proud of them for the maturity they showed in this game."

Quinn Ewers added 107 yards passing and a touchdown, and Jonathon Brooks ran for 108 yards and two scores, as Texas (7-4, 5-3) bounced back from a dismal game against the Horned Frogs in which it didn't score an offensive touchdown.

It scored on nine straight possessions after an opening punt Saturday and finished with 427 yards rushing.

"When you play a team that's as athletic as Texas, and you can see some of that when you stop your feet and lunge, and the missed tackles — it was not a good day there at all," Kansas coach Lance Leipold said, "and disappointing."

Jalon Daniels, starting for the first time since a shoulder injury six weeks ago, threw for 230 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Jayhawks (6-5, 3-5). Devin Neal was held to 51 yards rushing on 13 carries.

"This offense had been averaging 36 or 37 points a game," Sarkisian said. "To hold them to 14 points, to hold them to just about 100 yards rushing, that's a heck of a performance against a difficult offense to defend."

Robinson, who was held to 29 yards rushing by the Horned Frogs, eclipsed that total midway through the first quarter Saturday, then kept on going. He bulldozed into the end zone from 2-yards out to give the Longhorns the lead, then ripped off two long runs on their next possession to extend the advantage to 14-0.

"Before the game I was freezing. I was like, 'This is not something you should play in,'" Robinson said. "But I knew I had to do whatever I could to help the team win. We had to run the ball throughout the game and that's what we did."

Robinson nearly had a third first-half TD run, but it was called back by a penalty and Texas had to kick a field goal.

"He's a freak of nature. That's as simple as I can put it," Ewers said. "I've never seen a guy like him before at the college level. He can really do it all."

The Jayhawks were hoping to get a boost from the return of Daniels, who had them off to a 5-0 start before his injury on Oct. 8. But they went 3-and-out on their first two drives, failed on fourth-and-2 on the next one, then had a TD wiped out by a penalty and watched Jacob Borcila miss the ensuing field-goal try.

Ewers added a touchdown pass to Keilan Robinson later in the second quarter. And after Daniels was picked off by Jaylan Ford, the Longhorns turned again to Robinson, who appeared to have scurried 25 yards for a touchdown but was ruled out at the 1-yard line with 1 second left in the half — then leapt over the pile on the next play anyway.

Robinson had 172 yards and three touchdowns as Texas took a 31-0 lead to the locker room.

The junior tailback scored from 32 yards out on the first possession of the second half for his first career four-touchdown day, and Sarkisian soon gave Robinson the rest of the night off.

But despite playing just 2 1/2 quarters, his big game against the Jayhawks sent him climbing through the school record book. Robinson tied Chris Gilbert for fifth in career rushing with 3,231 yards, and Robinson's 39 career scores is tied with Jamaal Charles and Roy Williams for fourth in school history.

The Longhorns face the Bears next Friday. The Jayhawks head down Interstate 70 to play the Wildcats on Saturday.

Robinson runs for 243 yards, 4 TDs as Texas routs KU 55-14

TOPEKA — Alex Gino wanted to write a 
book that reflected transgender youths’ experiences, the sort of book 
they wished they’d had when they were young.

It took them 12 years to write the 
book, which went on to receive several literary awards, including a 
Children’s Choice award and the Lambda literary award.

Now, the St. Marys City Commission is <a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/11/16/future-of-kansas-towns-library-uncertain-after-outpouring-of-support-at-commission-meeting/">threatening the existence</a> of a public library for simply <a target="_blank" href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/11/14/future-of-kansas-towns-library-in-jeopardy-over-refusal-to-remove-divisive-books/">having Gino’s book in stock</a>.

“It hurts my heart,” Gino said. “The 
implication is that my existence is so monstrous that it should be 
withheld from children. And what happens is, you end up with adults like
 me, who didn’t have good role models or good reflections of people like
 them growing up, and the road does not change who you are, but it makes
 the road much more painful. And it makes the road a lot more 
dangerous.”

The book in question, “Melissa,” is 
about a transgender girl in middle school who fights to be accepted as a
 girl among her peers, family, and fellow students. Melissa learns to 
advocate for herself and her friends by playing the role of Charlotte in
 her school’s production of “Charlotte’s Web.”

The book, which was published in 2015, was added to the Pottawatomie
 Wabaunsee Regional Library in St. Marys after it made the William Allen
 White Award 2017-2018 Master List for grades 3-5.

“Melissa” had only been checked out 
four times from the library when it became the center of uproar this 
summer. Parent Dave Perry demanded the book be removed from the library,
 saying the contents were unsuitable for children and encouraged 
“chemical castration.”

Following Perry’s demands for 
removal, St. Marys city commissioners asked the library to accept a 
lease clause that would remove all books that dealt with sexuality, 
race, or LGBTQ themes.

The lease stipulated that the library
 not “supply, distribute, loan, encourage, or coerce acceptance of or 
approval of explicit sexual or racially or socially divisive material, 
or events (such as ‘drag queen story hours’) that support the LGBTQ+ or 
critical theory ideology or practice.”

The library refused to accept the 
“morals clause,” and commissioners remain undetermined on whether or not
 they’ll allow the library to stay in the St. Marys location. At the 
latest commission meeting, officials discussed allowing the library to 
have a short-term lease while they decided if the library met the “moral
 standards” of the commissioners. The commissioners will vote on the 
lease in early December. The library’s lease ends Dec. 31.

The American Civil Liberties Union of
 Kansas issued a statement in support of the library Wednesday, urging 
that the library continue to be funded and that the commission abandon 
the ban of these materials. The ACLU condemned the actions of the 
commission and said it will&nbsp; monitor the situation.

“The residents of the various cities 
served by the library have a First Amendment right to the targeted 
content,” said Sharon Brett, legal director of the ACLU of Kansas. “And 
the St. Mary’s commission’s insistence on banning items containing 
content they don’t like could have constitutional implications when it 
comes to library patrons’ rights to free expression and the right to 
receive information.”

Gino said the commissioners’ actions 
would damage transgender and LGBTQ youths in St. Marys, a town which is 
already heavily conservative and contains a large religious population 
associated with the Society of Saint Pius X.

St. Marys Vice-Mayor Francis 
Awerkamp, a Republican who also serves in the Kansas House, said he 
wouldn’t support the public library in any form because of the LGBTQ 
material it housed.

Gino said they are used to extreme reactions to “Melissa” but that this case was fairly extreme.

“When trans people are harmed because the people in his community don’t know who we are, that blood is on his hands,” Gino said.

Gino’s book is no longer kept in the 
library: Perry, the parent who objected to Gino’s book, said he had paid
 to have the book removed from the library.

Gino referenced Perry’s speech in 
support of the library during a Nov. 15 debate on whether or not to 
renew the library’s lease. Perry had said he wanted the library to stay,
 and that the whole thing had gone too far.

“The parent who brought up the book 
does not want the library closed. And it’s this case of, ‘No, no, I 
wanted censorship my way, but now you’re going too far.’ But you opened 
the door to censorship. That’s why we don’t do that,” Gino said.

“The scary thing is that the 
alternative is to remove the library, so I don’t even know how to feel,”
 Gino added. “But in general, the idea of taking my book off the shelves
 because one individual or small group of individuals are trying to 
outweigh the librarian and the library, it’s selfish. I think it’s a 
fragile action. And I think it’s not American. It is not in favor of 
free speech, and it’s not the world I want to be in.”

Gino said the sort of censorship seen
 in St. Marys and in the U.S. at large has worsened over the past few 
years, though they’ve been battling harsh responses to the book since it
 was published.

Gino said “Melissa” was the No.1 most
 banned and challenged book on the American Library Association’s banned
 books list for three years in a row. The book has been challenged in 
Kansas before, with Wichita Public Schools refusing to buy the book in 
2017, bucking the custom of purchasing books from the William Allen 
White Children’s Book Awards Committee.

“The issue of banned and challenged 
books is much, much worse in the last two or so years,” Gino said. “It’s
 becoming a real epidemic. It’s gotten to the point where people are 
going in with an entire list of books that they want removed.”

At the November commission meeting, 
many St. Marys residents spoke in favor of keeping the library, but few 
supported the book itself. One speaker said the book would encourage 
children to become “frankensteins.” More than one person said “Melissa” 
would cause the town youths to want to chemically castrate themselves. 
Another said that LGBTQ books were the work of a “silver tongued devil.”

“I really just want to send my 
support to the trans kids, to the queer kids out there, to the families 
out there,” Gino said. “The majority does support you, and you are 
loved, and you are welcome in your space.”

As high school football around the state of Kansas heads to the semifinal round, just 24 11-man teams remain alive.

Among these remaining programs are two defending champions in Mill Valley and Andale, three runners-up in Derby, Maize, and Inman, and several Kansas football dynasties both new and old.

14 of these programs have won a state title, and 14 have appeared in at least one state championship game since 2010. Only six have never played for a state title before, while ten have never unfurled a state football banner in their history.

This week, there will be just three matchups that feature a pair of teams that have not played in a championship since 2010, and one of these games will take place in Kingman, where the Southeast of Saline Trojans will travel to take on the Eagles.

While SES and Kingman have arrived at the same destination with similar numbers, the paths these two programs walked to get here are drastically different and should make for one of the most interesting matchups in the state tonight.

In the Mitch Gebhardt era, which began in 2010, Southeast of Saline has amassed a record of 93-37, becoming a force to be reckoned with as the team bounced between 3 and 2A.

The Trojans slowly but surely built their program into what it is today, culminating in a three-year run with a 32-2 record, a quarterfinal appearance, and now, back-to-back semifinal appearances.

Last year, the Trojans made their deepest playoff run since their 2005 state championship season but were stopped short by an Andale juggernaut, leaving Southeast with unfinished business.

Kingman’s rise, while just as impressive, has been much more rapid. The Eagles named Tanner Hageman head coach back in 2019, where he immediately turned the team around, leading them to their first winning campaign since 2014 in just his second season.

By 2021, the Eagles were a force to be reckoned with, soaring through the playoffs to a semifinal berth against Beloit, despite having won just one playoff game in the previous 17 campaigns.

That run was the longest in Kingman since their lone state championship appearance in 1972, but Beloit closed the book with a narrow 22-19 victory, leaving Kingman with unfinished business.

One of these teams will advance to their first state championship in over 15 years.&nbsp;

For SES, that would mean an opportunity to notch a second-ever state title, for Kingman, a chance to chase their first.

One could make the case that to the teams involved, this game means more than almost any other being played tonight, and on paper, this should be one heck of a battle.

The Trojans enter this contest ranked second in scoring offense (49.1 PPG), Kingman ranks fourth (42.0).&nbsp;

SES has held their opponents to the third-fewest point totals this season (9.5 PPGA), a category where the Eagles have the best marker in Class 2A (5.1).

Both teams have remained skillfully balanced on offense, wearing teams down with their running game before gashing opposing secondaries with the pass, and both offenses start with incredible quarterback play.

Despite all of this, it’s still business as usual in the Southeast locker room, where the focus remains, as it has all year, on finding a way to go 1-0.

“I think our mentality of 1-0 has been big for us,” SES head coach Mitch Gebhardt said. “Every week really has been very important to us to continue to improve and to get better. That started in the first week of practice and it’s continued every week since. Every week presents its own situations that you have to deal with but our kids have handled it all well so far.”

As the Trojans have built a new contender off the work of those who departed last season, SES has looked more and more formidable with each passing week, something that has not been lost on the Trojan coaching staff.

“We’ve seen a ton of maturity in the postseason and that’s really where I think we’ve grown the most,” Gebhardt said. “We were maturing throughout the regular season and we had plenty of guys back from last season but we also had a lot of guys had didn’t see many downs and those guys really stepped up and helped us to grow as a football team.”

That maturity will be tested this week against arguably the best team the Trojans have seen since last year’s semifinal.

The SES defense will have to find an answer for do-everything signal caller Nolan Freund, who leads the team with 1,826 passing yards, 800 rushing yards, and 36 total touchdowns, wrecking opposing defenses in 2022.

“Kingman’s quarterback is really good both at running and at passing the ball,” Gebhardt said. “They’ve got a lot of options to get the ball to and their linemen do a great job of blocking for those guys. Defensively they get a lot of people to the football and they read things very well.”

To answer that call, SES will need a big night from their own deadly dual-threat Luke Gebhardt, who has posted similar numbers with 2,274 passing yards, 819 rushing yards, and 30 total touchdowns.

“Having a good passing game against a team like this is important but we do emphasize both pretty heavily,” he said. “We want to be strong on the ground and in the air and that balance is vital to what we do. Defenses will give you things sometimes that you need to take advantage of, it’s up to us to find those things and go make plays.”

Despite all the stakes of this semifinal matchup, Southeast refuses to waver from the mentality that got them this far, and will have a similar message once again this week.

“Regardless of what might be ahead this really is just another opportunity for us to go 1-0,” Gebhardt said. “We’ve talked about that for a lot of years and we’ve really emphasized it again this season. Our focus has been on getting better in practice so we can take our best selves to Kingman.”

Kickoff between the Trojans and Eagles is set for 7 pm at Kingman high school with the winner advancing to the 2A state championship game to take on 11-0 Nemeha Central or 9-1 Sabetha.

Trojans travel to Kingman for historic semifinal tilt

Two people from Texas were arrested Thursday afternoon in Harvey County after a high-speed chase that began in Saline County.

The incident began at 2:24 p.m. Thursday west of Salina on Interstate 70 when a Saline County deputy observed a white BMW 328 going 88 mph in a 75 mph zone, Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning. The deputy stopped the car near milepost 247 and made contact with the driver, identified as Braelyn Eskridge, 21, of Aubrey, Texas.

Melander said Eskridge told the deputy that he didn't have identification. A passenger in the car, identified as Starlett Smith, 42, of Arlington, Texas, did, however, provide a Texas identification card, he said.

During the discussion with Eskridge and Smith, the deputy smelled marijuana, Melander said.

The deputy returned to his vehicle to run a records check. When the deputy returned to the BMW, Eskridge allegedly said he had a warrant and drove off, Melander said. The BMW headed eastbound on I-70 before turning south onto Interstate 135 with deputies in pursuit.

Deputies north of the Mentor exit on I-135 placed stop sticks on the highway, which flattened the front driver-side tire, Melander said. 

The BMW continued, exiting I-135 at the Mentor exit and traveling east at a high rate of speed before turning south on S. Ohio Street. During that time, Smith allegedly was tossing marijuana and drug paraphernalia from the BMW, Melander said. 

The car continued at a high rate of speed across Kansas Highway 4 before turning west on E. Lapsley Road. The BMW then turned south on Old 81 Highway before re-entering I-135 at the Bridgeport exit.

Melander said Kansas Highway Patrol troopers put down stop sticks in McPherson County. KHP Technical Trooper Ben Gardner told Salina Post that Eskridge positioned the BMW in such a way as to attempt to strike a trooper deploying the stop sticks. The trooper was not injured.

The BMW continued into Harvey County, where it finally crashed south of Newton.

Eskridge was booked into the McPherson County Jail on the following requested charges, according to booking information.

●Aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer

●Flee or attempt to elude law enforcement by engaging in reckless drive

Smith, who was booked into the Saline County Jail, was arrested on the following requested charges, Melander said.

Melander said the investigation is ongoing and that Saline County may also pursue charges against Eskridge.

A high-speed chase through parts of Saline County Thursday afternoon ended in a crash south of Newton.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Mike Ascher said this afternoon that a vehicle was stopped for speeding west of Salina on Interstate 70 near milepost 247. He said the eastbound vehicle took off and eventually turned south onto Interstate 135.

According to Ascher, deputies deployed stop sticks near the W. Water Well Road exit on I-135, however the vehicle continued southbound before exiting at Smolan Road. The vehicle continued through rural Saline County, reaching speeds of 80 mph on dirt roads, Ascher said.

The vehicle got back on I-135 at the Bridgeport exit, continuing southbound. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the chase ended when the vehicle crashed south of Newton.

UPDATE: Two arrested after high-speed chase through Saline County

Today in History - November 17

WICHITA – AAA predicts 54.6 million people nationwide will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. That’s a 1.5% increase over 2021 and 98% of pre-pandemic volumes. This year is projected to be the third busiest for Thanksgiving travel since AAA started tracking in 2000*. In Kansas, travelers will be out on the roads and in the air as more than 581,000 Kansans plans to travel over the holiday weekend. That’s an increase of 1.2% over last year.

“Families and friends are eager to spend time together this Thanksgiving, one of the busiest for travel in the past two decades,” says Paula Twidale, AAA’s Senior Vice President of Travel. “Plan ahead and pack your patience, whether you’re driving or flying.”  

Most travelers will drive to their destinations, much like last year. Nearly 49 million people are expected to travel by car. While Thanksgiving road trips have slightly risen - up 0.4% from 2021 - car travel remains 2.5% below 2019 levels. Locally in Kansas, more than 525,000 will be traveling by car – the most popular mode, but just a slight increase of 0.2% from a year ago.

Air travel is up nearly 8% over 2021, with 4.5 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations this year. That’s an increase of more than 330,000 travelers and nearly 99% of the 2019 volume. For Kansans, air travel is up also – with more than 29,000 people flying – similar to the national trend, an increase of 7.4%.

“Airport parking spaces fill up fast, so reserve a spot ahead of time and arrive early,” Twidale suggests. “Anticipate long TSA lines. If possible, avoid checking a bag to allow for more flexibility if flights are delayed or you need to reschedule.”&nbsp;

Americans are also ramping up travel by other modes of transportation. More than 1.4 million travelers are going out of town for Thanksgiving by bus, train, or cruise ship. That’s an increase of 23% from 2021 and 96% of the 2019 volume.&nbsp;Much like others across the country, more Kansans will journey these ways, too, with more than 26,000 people – an increase of 27% - traveling by bus, trains or cruises.

“With travel restrictions lifted and more people comfortable taking public transportation again, it’s no surprise buses, trains, and cruises are coming back in a big way,” Twidale adds. “Regardless of the mode of transportation you have chosen, expect crowds during your trip and at your destination. If your schedule is flexible, consider off-peak travel times during the holiday rush.”&nbsp;

*2005 and 2019 have been the busiest years for Thanksgiving travel, respectively, since AAA started tracking in 2000.

Busiest corridors and best/worst times to travel INRIX expects severe congestion in several U.S. metro areas, with some drivers experiencing more than double normal delays. Highways in and around Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles will be the busiest. To avoid the most hectic times, INRIX recommends traveling early in the morning on Wednesday or before 11am on Thanksgiving Day and avoiding travel between 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Thanksgiving is one of the busiest holidays for road trips, and this year will be no different,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst, INRIX. “Although travel times will peak on Wednesday afternoon nationally, travelers should expect much heavier than normal congestion throughout the holiday weekend. Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic.”&nbsp;

Holiday prep for travelers The travel season can be fraught with twists and turn. AAA recommendations for a safe and fun weekend including the following:

●Schedule a vehicle maintenance inspection completed before taking off if traveling by car.

●Download the AAA app to help find the cheapest gas prices along the road.

●Make sure your AAA membership is up to date. AAA Roadside Service crews will be out in full force to rescue any stranded drivers.

●AAA Emergency Roadside Service crews rescued more than 400,000 drivers across the country last Thanksgiving weekend – more than 1,300 in AAA Kansas territory.

●Download your airline’s app if flying to be sure you are immediately notified of any changes to the schedule.

Nearly 49 million people are expected to travel by car. While Thanksgiving road trips have slightly risen - up 0.4% from 2021 - car travel remains 2.5% below 2019 levels. Locally in Kansas, more than 525,000 will be traveling by car – the most popular mode, but just a slight increase of 0.2% from a year ago.Air travel is up nearly 8% over 2021, with 4.5 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations this year. That’s an increase of more than 330,000 travelers and nearly 99% of the 2019 volume. For Kansans, air travel is up also – with more than 29,000 people flying – similar to the national trend, an increase of 7.4%.<figure>

 </figure>“Airport parking spaces fill up fast, so reserve a spot ahead of time and arrive early,” Twidale suggests. “Anticipate long TSA lines. If possible, avoid checking a bag to allow for more flexibility if flights are delayed or you need to reschedule.”&nbsp;Americans are also ramping up travel by other modes of transportation. More than 1.4 million travelers are going out of town for Thanksgiving by bus, train, or cruise ship. That’s an increase of 23% from 2021 and 96% of the 2019 volume.&nbsp;Much like others across the country, more Kansans will journey these ways, too, with more than 26,000 people – an increase of 27% - traveling by bus, trains or cruises.“With travel restrictions lifted and more people comfortable taking public transportation again, it’s no surprise buses, trains, and cruises are coming back in a big way,” Twidale adds. “Regardless of the mode of transportation you have chosen, expect crowds during your trip and at your destination. If your schedule is flexible, consider off-peak travel times during the holiday rush.”&nbsp;*2005 and 2019 have been the busiest years for Thanksgiving travel, respectively, since AAA started tracking in 2000.Busiest corridors and best/worst times to travel INRIX expects severe congestion in several U.S. metro areas, with some drivers experiencing more than double normal delays. Highways in and around Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles will be the busiest. To avoid the most hectic times, INRIX recommends traveling early in the morning on Wednesday or before 11am on Thanksgiving Day and avoiding travel between 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Thanksgiving is one of the busiest holidays for road trips, and this year will be no different,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst, INRIX. “Although travel times will peak on Wednesday afternoon nationally, travelers should expect much heavier than normal congestion throughout the holiday weekend.
