A former Kansas Wesleyan University professor was arrested after shoplifting over $3,000 worth of trading cards.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on February 1 at around 6:30 pm, an officer was dispatched to Target (2939 Market Pl.) for suspected shoplifting.&nbsp;

Reportedly, Derrin Broome (53) entered the store and picked up 11 boxes of Topps trading cards. He then walked around the store, removed the packs from the boxes and left the store without paying. 

Total loss of cards on that date was about $650.

Furthermore, employees reported they recognized&nbsp;Broome from committing similar thefts, which had not been previously reported from the store, four previous times between the dates of Jan. 5 and Jan. 29.

In each instance Broome committed the same crime as he did on February 1. 

Total loss of each incidence was valued at about $3,350.

According to Saline County Jail Booking records, Broome was arrested on February 5 by the Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for these thefts. 

Broome is facing the requested charge of Felony Theft.

Broome arrived to KWU after wrapping up a 26-year law enforcement career that included 20 years of investigation and case management experience. He spent 20 years as his agency’s main instructor for topics including defensive tactics, de-escalation, use of force, firearms and other topics.

&nbsp;Broome was listed on KWU's website as an assistant professor of criminal justice prior to his arrest. 

He no longer appears on the university website.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, February 12

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man injured in a fatal fight on July 4, was to return to court on Thursday.

&nbsp;A preliminary hearing for Eduardo Diaz-Yobal, 33, in Judge Christopher Magana's courtroom was postponed, according to the Sedgwick District Attorney's office. Diaz-Yobal is charged with first-degree murder in&nbsp;the death of 33-year-old Cesar Gonzalez.

Early on July 4, police responded to a report of an assault in the 3000 block of North Fairview in Wichita, according to a media release from Wichita Police. A caller reported witnessing a man attacking another man. The victim was later identified as Gonzalez of Wichita.&nbsp;

Before officers arrived, the suspect fled the scene. Officers found Gonzalez unresponsive in the parking lot. Sedgwick County EMS transported him to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased at 1:54 a.m.

Officers located the suspect identified as<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/inmatesearch/Details.aspx?Id=254855">&nbsp;Diaz-Yobal, 33, of Wichita,</a>&nbsp;in the 300 block of W. 29th Street and took him into custody without incident.

Diaz-Yobal had injuries consistent with the altercation and was admitted to an area hospital for treatment, released and then booked into the Sedgwick County Jail where he is being on bond of over&nbsp;&nbsp;$1,500,000.00, according to online jail records.

Hearing delayed for Kan. man in deadly 4th of July fight

The family of the late Riley Dean Faris, is questioning why no criminal charges were placed on an individual involved in the crash that took away his life.

Riley Faris passed away at age 30 on&nbsp;October 17, 2025 after riding his motorcycle, when he was hit from behind on a Brookville road. The crash happened at approximately 6:53 pm on K-140 Highway at Perry Street. Faris was headed westbound when a 2003 Subaru Forester operated by Kiley Barnett (39) from Kanopolis, hit him from behind.&nbsp;

Barnett was booked into the Saline County Jail that same night with requested charges of No Proof of Insurance, Driving While Suspended (DWS) and Following Too Close. She was then released.

According to Kansas Court records, Barnett has 40 traffic violations.

Colton Faris, brother of Riley <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1DZBboGCVw/">made a Facebook video on February 3, 2026</a>&nbsp;discussing a conversation he had with Saline County Attorney, John Reynolds.

Colton stated his mother got in contact via phone with Reynolds and wondered why they have not received an accident report after three and a half months since the incident.&nbsp;During the phonecall, Colton said Reynolds explained to his mother the charges placed on Barnett and further said "that is just what happens when you ride a motorcycle."

Colton then called Reynolds on why he made the comment. According to Colton, Reynolds described to him that he thinks there was no evidence to place any sort of murder or involuntary manslaughter charge on Barnett.

"He (Reynolds) said, yes she killed him but it was not criminal. I don't understand that when you don't have a license, you are not supposed to be driving and when you don't have insurance, which is required to drive a car, how killing him is not a criminal offense," said Colton Faris on the video.

Reynolds told Salina Post he did not make explicitly make the comment of "that is just what happens when you ride a motorcycle," but instead was "taken out of context."

He said the context was he explained how "when cars and motorcycles collide, it always ends up bad for the motorcyclist."

Saline County Sheriff's Office on accident report

The Saline County Sheriff's Office told Salina Post why the Faris family received the accident report 3.5 months later.

According to the Sheriff's Office, reports are available through the <a href="https://www.dol.ks.gov/labor-relations/kansas-open-records-act-kora">Kansas Open Records Act</a>, but with fluid cases (evolving) and cases with the potential to result in criminal charges without a criminal court disposition, are two of the several exemptions to the act.

In this case, the law enforcement agency did not have a court disposition, or any information if criminal charges were not going to be filed by the County Attorney until the week of Feb. 2 - 6, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office wanted to confirm there were not going to be criminal charges filed prior to releasing a narrative report that could potentially interfere with criminal prosecution. 

Once this was learned, the Sheriff's Office encouraged the Faris family to request the case again and the report was disseminated within 48 hours.

"We strive to provide the appropriate information at the appropriate time while adhering to the Kansas Open Records Act," said the Sheriff's Office.

Reynolds stated the charges placed on Barnett were "traffic violations" and not criminal charges.

Reynolds provided details on what happened in the accident.

According to Reynolds, there was a vehicle going southbound leaving Brookville and got onto K-140 westbound. He said the vehicle got right in front of Faris, which caused him to slow down. Barnett coming from behind was headed westbound and once she became aware of Faris slowing down, she had a "very narrowed reaction time, because she closed the gap between him and the vehicle in front," according to Reynolds.

Reynolds said Barnett tried to avoid colliding with Faris during this time.

"By the time she realizes what's going on, she goes to take evasive maneuvers to move over into the other lane to go around Faris," Reynolds said. "She almost missed him."

Reynolds further said he knew this happened, because he not only visited the accident scene, but also by determining the marks on the vehicles, roadway and review of law enforcement body cameras.

"There were two state troopers out there, they came to the same conclusion of the deputies and what I had," said Reynolds.

Additionally, Reynolds said Barnett should have been farther back before the crash. He placed the Following Too Close charge, because the crash resulted in a fatality.&nbsp;

He also said Faris was not wearing a helmet.

For Barnett to have been placed a requested charge of Involuntary Manslaughter, Reynolds stated the following would need to include:&nbsp;

- Killing someone while committing or attempting to commit a felony.   

- During to commission of an unlawful act in an unlawful manner; Or in attempting to commit, or in flight from, an act described in KSA 8-1567.

"I did not see any of these elements in the affidavit filed in this case," said Reynolds.

Petition started to demand felony charges and removal County Attorney

The cousin of the late Riley Faris, started a <a href="https://www.change.org/p/justice-for-riley-demand-felony-charges-and-removal-of-saline-county-attorney-j-reynolds">petition</a> titled "JUSTICE FOR RILEY: Demand Felony Charges and Removal of Saline County Attorney J. Reynolds."

Stated in the petition, the writer brought up Kansas statutes for upgraded charges on Barnett.

"The charges against Kiley Barnett be upgraded to the highest extent of the law. Under&nbsp;K.S.A. 21-5403, a killing committed unintentionally but recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life is Second-Degree Murder.&nbsp;At a minimum, this must be prosecuted as Involuntary Manslaughter&nbsp;(K.S.A. 21-5405), a Level 5 Person Felony."

Furthermore, it stated Kansas Rules of Professional Conduct for the removal of Reynolds.

The petition currently has over 4,000 signatures.

Barnett is scheduled to appear in court for a status conference on March 25. 

The Saline County court will determine to either take the Barnett case to trial on if she will be convicted for DWS, No Proof of Insurance and Following Too Close.

🎥 Family of late motorcyclist speaks after fatal crash, no criminal charges on individual involved

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas teen who admitted his role in a deadly drive-by shooting is going to prison.

On Wednesday, Judge Christopher Magana sentenced 15-year-old Elias Cerda to&nbsp;260 months in prison and 36 months of post release supervision, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas teen who admitted his role in a deadly drive-by shooting will learn his fate Wednesday.

Elias Cerda, 15,&nbsp; will appear in Judge Christopher Magana's courtroom for a sentencing hearing, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In November, Cerda, who was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, second degree murder and attempted aggravated robbery, according to the district attorney's office.

In January 2024, police responded to reports of shots being fired in the area of 5200 E Kensington in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.

Around the same time, officers were dispatched to an area hospital for the report of two walk-in shooting victims later identified as 14-year-old Emoni Shears and 19-year-old Jhiquez Roberts both of Wichita. They were later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives and patrol officers immediately began investigating this case and following up on leads. Police arrested Cerda, who was 14 at the time. He was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on November 27, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

They were later pronounced deceased at the hospital.Detectives and patrol officers immediately began investigating this case and following up on leads. Police arrested Cerda, who was 14 at the time. He was booked into the Sedgwick County jail on November 27, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

Last week, Johnson County Judge Jason Billam sentenced 21-year-old Treger Melique Samuels to 84-months in prison, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

Samuels pleaded guilty to charges of distributing drugs causing the death of 20-year-old Ericka Grisby of Olathe.&nbsp; In June of 2025, police booked Samuels into the Johnson County Jail, according to online records.

Saline County Jail Bookings, February 10

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —After a two-day search, law enforcement captured a stolen vehicle suspect.

Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a caller who observed a pickup truck that had been reported stolen out of St. Mary’s, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The caller observed the vehicle in western Jackson County.&nbsp; Jackson County Deputies located the vehicle near N. Road on 158th&nbsp;Road.&nbsp; A pursuit ensued eastbound.&nbsp; The vehicle turned into a driveway of a residence located at 15505 158th&nbsp;Road and crashed through a fence.&nbsp; The vehicle caught fire, deputies and fire crews extinguished the fire as the driver escaped into a thickly wooded area. Deputies and troopers searched the area with K-9s and drones and were not able to locate the suspect.

Just after 10 a.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen who reported finding a man wearing a brown Carhartt Jacket with blue jeans in his chicken house. Sheriff’s Office personnel quickly came on scene.&nbsp; Deputies, State Troopers and K.B.I. agents assisted with the search including K-9s, drones and aircraft.&nbsp; As of 2 p.m. today, the subject has not been located.

The Sheriff’s Office identified William Joseph Goetz, 43, of Saint George. Goetz as the suspect and reported he believed that Goetz was without a phone and would access buildings or vehicles to stay warm at night.&nbsp; Deputies continued to canvass the area.

Late Monday afternoon, the suspect allegedly stole a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup truck from a residence on U. Road.&nbsp; The suspect headed south on U. Road and only after 1/8th of a mile rolled the truck and fled again on foot.&nbsp; Law enforcement continued pursuing the suspect southeast to a lake located east of U. Road on 150th.&nbsp; Law enforcement finally apprehended Goetz who was hiding in another pickup truck.&nbsp; Goetz will be booked into the Jackson County Jail for numerous requested charges.

Kansas stolen vehicle suspect captured after 2-day search

RILEY COUNTY —A member of the Kansas State University men's basketball staff is under investigation for alleged violent crimes.

Just before 1:30a.m. Monday, 29-year-old Mark Vital was booked into the Riley County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp;&nbsp;domestic battery; knowing rude physical contact with family member or dating relationship, according to the Riley County Police Department arrest report. 

On Monday afternoon, K-State Athletics released a statement on the arrest.

"We are aware of Mark Vital's arrest on Sunday night. He has been removed from all team responsibilities until the judicial process runs its course."

Just after 3a.m. Monday, Vital met the requirement of a $2,000 bond and is no longer in custody.

He is in his first season as a graduate student manager at K-State, according to his online bio. Vital was a three-time All-Big 12 selection and a member of Baylor’s 2021 National Championship team where K-State head coach Jerome Tang was an assistant.&nbsp; Vital is working towards a master’s in counseling and student development at K-State.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities have&nbsp;arrested two suspects including a teen in connection with an aggravated assault with a firearm that occurred at a home in Garden Plain.

Just before 10 p.m., deputies and the Garden Plain Police Department responded to reports of shots fired into an occupied home in the 300 block of West Lavern Lane, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff's office spokesman Branden Stitt.

 The Garden Plain Police Department requested the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office take over the investigation.

Four people were inside the home at the time of the shooting. No one was struck by gunfire, and no injuries were reported.

Detectives believe one of the victims, who was also the intended target, was involved in a drug transaction with the suspects that involved the use of counterfeit currency. Detectives believe the suspects then followed the victim back to his home and fired shots into the occupied house.&nbsp;

The investigation continued into the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 7, when deputies, detectives and forensic investigators identified and arrested the suspects. Detectives booked 20-year-old Cristian Yair Garcia and a 16-year-old male juvenile, both of Cheney, on charges of criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Police arrest K-State basketball grad student manager

Philip Wade Hardman, 69, of Osborne, Kansas, passed away on December 25, 2025.

He was born on August 21, 1956, the third son of Dr. Dennis Hardman and Lila Hardman. He grew up in Smith Center, Kansas, where he attended Smith Center Public Schools and graduated from Smith Center High School in 1974.

After high school, Philip joined his two older brothers at the University of Kansas. There, he became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. A devoted Jayhawk, he graduated in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He continued his education at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, earning his law degree in 1981.

While in law school, Philip met Debra Whitehair in 1980. The two were married on August 8, 1981, in Danforth Chapel on the University of Kansas campus, beginning a marriage that would span more than four decades.

In September 1981, Philip accepted an offer to join the law practice of Dallas Cordill in Osborne, Kansas. That move brought the couple to the community that would become their lifelong home. In January 1985, he formed a partnership with Richard Dietz, establishing Dietz &amp; Hardman, a professional relationship that remained a great source of pride throughout his career. The firm expanded in December 2002 with the opening of a second office in Smith Center. Philip practiced law for 41 years, retiring in 2022 after a distinguished legal career.

In addition to his private practice, Philip served his community in numerous professional and civic roles, including serving as USD 392 School Board Attorney, Osborne City Attorney from 2009 to 2022, and a member of the Osborne Public Library Board for 10 years. He helped establish the local chapter of Pheasants Forever and was a committed supporter of the University of Kansas Honors Program for more than 30 years.

Philip and Deb welcomed their son, Bailor Lee Hardman, in January 1986, and their daughter, Sloane Selbe Hardman, in May 1990. Becoming a father was one of the great privileges of his life. He took deep pride in his children and found tremendous joy in watching them grow into the people they are today.

Philip lived life with curiosity, loyalty‌ and enthusiasm. He was a lifelong fan of the Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Royals, and Kansas City Chiefs. He loved the Rocky Mountains and was a skilled skier, often calling the family condo in Snowmass, Colorado, and the slopes it served, his favorite place on earth. Music was another constant in his life. He built an extensive collection and enjoyed seeing live concerts whenever he could.

He generously gave his time to youth athletics. He coached T-Ball and Pee Wee baseball, and later umpired K-18 and American Legion baseball. He coached Osborne High School tennis for 20 seasons, 19 with the girls team and one with the boys. He also led a summer recreation tennis program, taking particular satisfaction in introducing young people to a sport they could carry with them for life.

Philip loved the outdoors, especially pheasant and quail hunting, and was a longtime member of the Osborne Gun Club. Over the years, he shared that passion with his beloved German Shorthaired Pointers, whose companionship in the field—and at home—brought him great joy. He was an avid reader and was rarely without a book in hand. A lifelong student of politics, he welcomed thoughtful discussion with anyone willing to engage. He was also a proud and regular blood donor, quietly giving back in a way that reflected his deep sense of civic responsibility.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents, Lila Hardman and Dr. Dennis Hardman. He is survived by his wife, Debra Hardman; his son, Dr. Bailor Hardman (Enya); his daughter, Sloane Hardman (Cliff Ewert); his grandson, Vaughn Ewert; his brothers, John Hardman and Jim Hardman (Grayson); his niece, Shannon&nbsp;Weissleder;&nbsp;his nephew, Ian Hardman (Alana); his great-nephews, Story Hardman, Henley Hardman, and Reid Weissleder; his great-niece, Rhea Weissleder; his aunt, Donna Hallewell (John Anthony); and several cousins.

A visitation will be held Friday, February 27, 2026, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sims Center, 109 W. Main St., Osborne, Kansas. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., also at the Sims Center, followed by lunch.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the compassionate staff and caregivers at Osborne County Memorial Hospital.&nbsp;Memorial contributions may be made to the Osborne City Tennis Courts.

The two were married on August 8, 1981, in Danforth Chapel on the University of Kansas campus, beginning a marriage that would span more than four decades.In September 1981, Philip accepted an offer to join the law practice of Dallas Cordill in Osborne, Kansas. That move brought the couple to the community that would become their lifelong home. In January 1985, he formed a partnership with Richard Dietz, establishing Dietz &amp; Hardman, a professional relationship that remained a great source of pride throughout his career. The firm expanded in December 2002 with the opening of a second office in Smith Center. Philip practiced law for 41 years, retiring in 2022 after a distinguished legal career.In addition to his private practice, Philip served his community in numerous professional and civic roles, including serving as USD 392 School Board Attorney, Osborne City Attorney from 2009 to 2022, and a member of the Osborne Public Library Board for 10 years. He helped establish the local chapter of Pheasants Forever and was a committed supporter of the University of Kansas Honors Program for more than 30 years.Philip and Deb welcomed their son, Bailor Lee Hardman, in January 1986, and their daughter, Sloane Selbe Hardman, in May 1990. Becoming a father was one of the great privileges of his life. He took deep pride in his children and found tremendous joy in watching them grow into the people they are today.Philip lived life with curiosity, loyalty‌ and enthusiasm. SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man arrested in Missouri for a&nbsp;deadly shooting in Wichita is now in a Kansas Jail.

On Thursday, 27-year-old Donny J. Harris of Springfield, Missouri was booked into the Sedgwick County jail, according to online jail records. He made his first court appearance and is charged with first degree murder.

Just after 8a.m. Jan. 26., police were dispatched to the&nbsp;the 900 block of East Indianapolis in Wichita&nbsp;for a reported welfare check after receiving information about a man down, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Upon arrival, officers located a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Wichita police officers and detectives conducted a thorough and comprehensive investigation, working through challenging weather conditions and utilizing multiple departmental resources.

Officers from multiple WPD sections, Crime Scene Investigators,&nbsp;K-9 Mantra, and&nbsp;Flock technology&nbsp;were utilized to canvass the area, locate evidence, and develop investigative leads.&nbsp;K-9 Mantra located multiple shell casings in the snow during the search.

As a result of this coordinated effort, detectives were able to quickly identify a suspect identified as Harris and establish probable cause. An arrest warrant was issued for first-degree murder.

Working in close coordination with the Springfield Police Department, Harris was located and arrested on the evening of Jan. 26, in Springfield, Missouri.&nbsp;

Harris is being held on a $500,000 bond. Police have not released the name of the victim.

Saline County Jail Bookings, February 8

SEDGWICK COUNTY&nbsp;— A suspect accused in the deadly shooting of a Dodge City man was back in court on Friday.

&nbsp;Ricardo Talavera, 41,  pleaded no contest&nbsp; involuntary manslaughter and interference with a law enforcement office in the death of 49-year-old Ruben Parga-Quintanar during a hearing in Judge Kathleen Watson's courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just before 9a.m. August 1, officers and Wichita Fire Department crews responded to a report of a man down near the entrance to an alley in the 2400 block of North Jeanette in Wichita, according to a media release. When fire personnel arrived, they found Parga-Quintanar with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:53 a.m.

Early findings in the investigation suggested Parga-Quintanar was shot elsewhere and collapsed after fleeing on a bicycle. As the case progressed, detectives determined he was shot in the alley and then collapsed nearby.

Investigators identified Talavera as a suspect and served a search warrant at his home.&nbsp; On August 6, police arrested him and booked him into the Sedgwick County Jail.&nbsp; He remains jailed on a&nbsp;$1,000,000.00 bond and will be sentenced in March, according to the district attorney's office.

CHEROKEE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with several local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, conducted a two-day enforcement operation this week targeting individuals who solicit minors for sex, according to a media release from the KBI.

The operation, which concluded Feb. 6, resulted in the arrest of five suspects on various charges, such as commercial sexual exploitation of a child, unlawful use of a communication facility, aggravated human trafficking, attempted aggravated indecent liberties, and electronic solicitation of a child.

The following individuals were taken into custody and booked into the Cherokee County Jail: Darin Price, 52, of Anderson, Missouri; Nicholes Reginal, 28, of Jackson, Mississippi;&nbsp; Trevor Porter, 34, of Pittsburg, Kansas; Nicolas Perez-Paxtor, 38, of Neosho, Missouri and Derek McKenney, 31, of Sarcoxie, Missouri.

The investigation was a collaborative effort to identify and apprehend predators who utilize digital platforms to prey upon underage victims. Following the arrests, case files were submitted to the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office for formal prosecution.

The KBI and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office were assisted in this operation by the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Office, the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, the Ray County (Missouri) Sheriff’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an alleged violent incident at a Kansas home.

Just before 10:30a.m. Feb. 5, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a reported domestic disturbance in the 6600 block of SW Montara Northway, according to Shawnee County Deputy Abigail Christian.

Upon arrival, deputies determined the adult male suspect identified as 39-year-old Stephon S. Taylor had left the residence.
