WICHITA, Kan. (August 5, 2025)—Mike Paredes became the Wichita Wind Surge single-season franchise wins leader in an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Equity Bank Park. The win makes it three in a row for the Wind Surge since Saturday night in Amarillo.&nbsp;

Kaelen Culpepper and Walker Jenkins went back-to-back on a three-run blast and a solo shot off of Major League rehabber Michael Lorenzen to give Wichita a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.&nbsp;Sam Ruta gave the Naturals their first run on a sac fly to left in the top of the third. Carson Roccaforte tied the game 4-4 on a three-run home run over the top of the wall in right field an inning later.

Jenkins reached base again on a single in the home half of the fifth, later scoring on a single by Kala’i Rosario, where a throwing error allowed him to come to the plate. Rosario later scored on a wild pitch to put the Wind Surge ahead by two runs.Brett Squires yanked an RBI double to right in the top of the sixth to make it 6-5 Wichita. Omar Hernandez came across from second on a passed ball, and then Brett Squires doubled to right to give the 7-6 lead to Northwest Arkansas in the next frame, ahead of the seventh inning stretch.&nbsp;

Q: How excited do you think Patrick Mahomes is for this upcoming season, with potentially more pass protection and a healthy wide receiver group?

NAGY:&nbsp;“He’s (Patrick Mahomes) really excited. He’s motivated in the right way. That’s just how he is, it’s who he is. He doesn’t want to – we spend a lot of time in OTAs going back to the basics on a lot of stuff. We’re graduating now with these wide receivers, working on that timing, and I think you’re seeing a trust element with him with several guys and then you’ll get to see some of that too with these guys in the preseason. We’ll get some people that stand out and get to show what they can do. Every year we probably say the same thing with Pat, but he creates a known edge for him. He wants to be great. He wants to be the best and he wants to be coached hard. So, that what we’re trying to do.”

Q: On Patrick Mahomes’ mentality and burn to win.

NAGY:&nbsp;“Yeah, that burn to win is at the highest level of probably any player in the NFL. He’s (Patrick Mahomes) built different that way, and I think when you have that it goes on to these other players on the team, offensive, defense, special teams, and us as coaches. You want to make sure you are doing everything possible. He’s a competitor. So, every game is going to be close. When you have him on your side, you know he’s going to give you a great chance. That’s where he’s at. So, when we lost that Super Bowl (LIX), it was the very next day and he was ready to go and we just know that it’s a great, high standard that we all have and (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid is at the top of that. So, it’s been good.”

<a>Q</a>: How excited are the guys for this first preseason game and will there be any changes to the way you prepare?

NAGY:&nbsp;“No changes for the practice prep. The excitement is there. These guys are going against each other every day now for the past couple of weeks, so they get to go live, which is number one phenomenal for them. It gets to become real (and) you get to see some different looks on defense, and then these guys are all competing for spots. It’s a great competition I mean, even when our guys go out there, no matter whether you are Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, or someone towards the bottom end of the roster working for a spot, it’s such an important time for these guys. We as coaches want to put them in the best position possible by letting them play fast. If we let them play fast, they can show us what they have, so it’ll be fun. We want to go there and try to do everything to win.”

Q: How are Jaylon Moore and Jawaan Taylor handing the competition at the right tackle position and how would you evaluate it?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Handling it great. Both (Jaylon Moore and Jawaan Taylor) true pros. I like what they are doing on tape. Again, Jawaan has been here for a few years now, so the mental side of just hearing the cadences and kind of knowing the scheme is great. I love where he is at mentally right now. He’s a competitor – these guys like to compete. It’s what they know all of their life. So, for both of them to be able to be out there and just compete, I think they’re handling it great. So, I love where they are at.”

Q:&nbsp;On learning from the other linebackers.

BASSA:&nbsp;“I’ve learned, truthfully, a lot from those guys (linebackers). Especially Drue (Tranquill) in the mix as well. So much knowledge and so much game because they have been in the game for such a long time and (have) been in (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) Spags’ defense for a long time, so for them to spill some knowledge on things that I can improve on and things that they know I’m not seeing, I take a lot – kinda have to take a step back and open your eyes and see the bigger picture in what they are trying to say. You gotta listen to the message not the tone. I appreciate a lot of those guys for spilling some of the knowledge and game that they got.”

Q:&nbsp;What has Steve Spagnuolo been challenging you with this camp?

BASSA:&nbsp;“Really learning both positions, the MIKE and the WILL. Really trying to cross train, so when it comes to a situation where he (Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo) can get me in (the game) at either position. I feel like I have been doing a great job at that as well. The fact that I’m learning two positions and now that I’m going to be able to – later on in my career learn the backend and learn the full front. I feel like it’s going to be a good job and it’s going to help me in the long end but really haven’t gotten too much into second team, third team or mixing in with the first team, that’s not what I’m really worried about right now. Really just worried on fully knowing the playbook and being confident enough coach can put me out with whoever.”

Q:&nbsp;On what Nick Bolton learned about him by watching rookie minicamp footage.

BASSA:&nbsp;“It really started off rip, just like you said when he (Nick Bolton) watched that tape it was kind of like ‘ok, why did you call this, and you could’ve did this to the front.’ It could’ve been a small adjustment that I missed, but then that is something that he (Nick Bolton) would’ve done. After I already watched some tape, now from his corrections I can go back and be like ‘ok, I’m seeing what he’s seeing now.’ So little things like that where it wasn’t too many glaring errors, but it was more so like ‘ok you could’ve did this to the front or when they motion here, you should bump to this alignment instead of this alignment.’ Just little things like that.”

Q:&nbsp;How much had you heard about the long drive drill before camp, and what is it like to experience it?

TONYAN:&nbsp;“I just heard about it from Trav(is) (Kelce) and Noah (Gray) kind of over just the past couple (of) years. But to be in it, like experiencing it; we did a little bit of it in OTAs, and that was cool. We had the pads off, but when you get in the St. Joe heat and you get rolling, and you’re actually out there for 10 straight plays, you feel it. But you’re not going to feel anything more game-like than that long drive drill.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you want to show in the preseason game?

TONYAN:&nbsp;“Yeah just that I’m consistent. I’m gonna make plays. Like I said, I want to get better every day, and then those games are a great opportunity to do so. Yeah, I’m just going to keep grinding it out. Like I said, like this is an (Head Coach) Andy Reid camp, (you) just keep on grinding. If you make full speed mistakes, don’t make them twice and then just make plays and keep grinding.”

Q:&nbsp;On the experience of playing with Patrick Mahomes.&nbsp;

TONYAN:&nbsp;“Just like I said, the throws he (Patrick Mahomes) makes, it’s just incredible. You know the windows he’s fitting them (throws) in, and the anticipation, and like I said the command in the huddle is just awesome. He’s super confident in there; I mean, this is year nine for him as well, so again like nine years in this offense is - and doing the way he’s doing it, commanding an MVP Super Bowl type (of) champion. So, yeah, I’m pumped for that.”

EDWARDS:&nbsp;“I mean, look at the organization. Anybody would be excited to play for this organization, so any time I get a chance to play here, I mean, I love it. My one year I was here -&nbsp; sadly enough, I had to go away. I went away, but (I’m) glad to be back. And like I said, it’s a big thing being a part of the Chiefs, so I love being here.”

Q:&nbsp;Do you appreciate the “long-drive drill” more, now that you’ve done it before or do you dread it more?

Other than that Jared Wiley, Drue Tranquill, (Kristian) Fulton, (Deon) Bush, Marquise Brown, (Jake) Briningstool, (the) same as we had yesterday, nothing changed there. It was good work today. We were not in pads, but we had a nice long practice with it. We got a lot done for a non-padded practice. Part of the league rules on what you got to do – what you can do and can’t do. Q: You’ve done a lot of red zone work today. How did you evaluate your work in the red zone last year?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah. Red zone, third downs, these things you can always get better at them. Even though we were one of the top third down teams, well you gotta be better at that. So, on both sides of the ball we did well. Red zone we did pretty good there – in certain situations, down and distances. We’ve got a lot of second and third-down plays today, which turned out being important. You don’t get a lot of work on that in the red zone, so we tried to focus on that throughout there.”

Q: Are you expecting Kristian Fulton to be eligible soon?

REID:&nbsp;“We’re hoping, yeah, we’re just kind of taking it day by day. He (Kristian Fulton) started to run here, so we’ll see where it goes.”

Q: Do you have an update on Hollywood Brown’s status?

REID:&nbsp;“Making progress, but it’s in that ankle area, so we just want to make sure it is right. That’s how we want to come out of this thing, and he (Hollywood Brown) is making progress. But we’ll just see. It’s not serious – when I say serious, I’m talking about surgery (and) it doesn’t look like he’s going to have surgery, but we got to let it heal up and go.”

Q: On Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, no, listen, I think they’re (Tyquan Thornton and Jason Brownlee) doing a nice job. You saw Brownlee with a couple of high balls there. I didn’t hear who the other one was you mentioned. Yeah, Thornton is doing a nice job too, likewise. So, both are big guys. Thornton is a runner, and Brownlee is a big strong kid. So, a little different styles, but both of them are good players.”

Q:&nbsp;On Jared Wiley’s recovery.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, he’s (Jared Wiley) got a little swelling in there, so we just got to watch that. We were trying to limit his reps and ease him in, but it would swell up a little bit so we’re just keeping an eye on him.”

Q<a>:</a>&nbsp;How has Travis Kelce played so far this camp?

REID:&nbsp;“He’s (Travis Kelce) done a good job, he’s been in a good rotation with Noah (Gray), and so he’s done good.”

Q:&nbsp;Is there a leader in the position battle at tackle?

REID:&nbsp;“Listen, we feel like we need all of them. So – but they’re rotating and doing that, and we’ll just see. We’ll just see who the two are at the end when we get done.”

Q:&nbsp;Do you enjoy the rookie rivalry between Josh Simmons and Ashton Gillotte?

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, it’s one thing you see with the rookies because they do a couple of different things before we actually get them on the field where they’re together at these different functions. There’s a certain pride in your rookie class and how you’re going to establish yourself in that and when they compete, those two (Josh Simmons and Ashton Gillotte) are competitive guys, and they get in there and bang it around a little and I think it’s all healthy. They’re friends so it works out off the field, but they’re both trying to chase a starting spot and see what they can do there.”

Q:&nbsp;How beneficial has it been to have Michigan’s offensive analyst Juan Castillo and former Chiefs tackle Cameron Erving at training camp.

REID:&nbsp;“It’s been great. Juan’s (Castillo) left here now to go back to Michigan, but he was great to have here with that experience. Cam’s (Erving) just getting into it, but he can give them that side of just having played. So, there’s merit to that and he’s got a knack, good communicator and looks like he is a real good teacher.”

REID:&nbsp;“He’s (Jalen Royals) doing a nice job, too. He’s Catching the football well, strong (and) looks like the quarterbacks trust him. That’s a big part of it. As you watch, you just kind of (can) see who the quarterbacks are going to, and there is a certain trust they’re developing here in that kid. So, that kind of speaks for itself.”

Q: What has been the best part of training camp, and what has been the worst?

ROYALS:&nbsp;“I’ll say the best part is being out playing football. That’s probably everybody’s favorite part. The worst part is probably the heat. It’s been real hot these couple days, so probably that.”

Q: What has been the biggest challenge between college and the NFL?

ROYALS:&nbsp;“Probably how fast everything is. Everything is a lot faster, quicker. Decisions (and) defenses are a lot different than college. Just getting up to speed with that, is probably the biggest transition.”

Q: On relationship with other Chiefs rookies.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ROYALS:&nbsp;“We’re all in the same dorm rooms, we’re all right there. So, we’re all going through this process together – learning the playbook, learning how (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid likes his offense. And then with Coach (Connor) Embree, (learning) how he runs his receiver room. So, we’re all just learning and trying to stick together.”

Q:&nbsp;What have you seen from Josh Simmons as far as technique?

TAYLOR:&nbsp;“He’s (Josh Simmons) very talented, man. Very, very good rookie so far. He’s been soaking up all the things we’ve been teaching him, Coach (Andy) Heck, the players, the veterans, and I feel like he’s going to have a great career here for sure.”

Q:&nbsp;How have you handled the competition on the offensive line?

TAYLOR:&nbsp;“Oh it’s going well. Everyone’s moving around, trying different positions and stuff like that, doing what Coach (Andy) Heck is asking us to do; and everyone is just trying to get better as a unit and be a better O-line for sure.”

Q:&nbsp;On the team bringing in more players on the offensive line.&nbsp;

TAYLOR:&nbsp;“I feel like it just helps the team become better as a whole. At the end of the day, we definitely needed help with the position. So, I’m glad they brought guys in to help the team because at the end of the day, we’re just trying to win and do what it takes to win.”

Q: What is your comfort level at left guard?

AMARILLO, Texas (August 2, 2025)—The Wichita Wind Surge scored in eight of nine innings in a 16-11 slugfest victory over the Amarillo Sod Poodles at HODGETOWN. 

Wichita comes together for 21 hits to snap their four-game losing streak.&nbsp;Ricardo Olivar smacked a three-run blast, his 12th of the season, to dead center in the top of the first inning to give Wichita a 3-0 lead four batters into the ballgame.

After a pair of infield errors, Manuel Pena scored to give Amarillo a run in the bottom of the first. Ben Ross got the run back for the Wind Surge by swatting his seventh homer of the season out to left-center in the top of the second. Following no runs in the bottom of the second, both teams would score in each half of the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.&nbsp;Hendry Mendez notched his first RBI with Wichita on a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the third for a 5-1 Wind Surge advantage. 

The Sod Poodles later cut that to one on consecutive doubles by Jose Fernandez and Christian Cerda in the home half of the frame.

Ross scored on a wild pitch, and Jose Salas came in on a fielder’s choice for two more Wichita tallies in the top of the fourth. Four runs followed for Amarillo on a two-run single by Gavin Conticello and a line drive two-run shot to the left field corner from Jose Fernandez in the bottom of the fourth. One run came home for each side in the fifth on a Rubel Cespedes RBI single and a solo shot by Pena.&nbsp;

The Wind Surge scored six runs on six hits in the top of the sixth, including a bases-clearing double by Nate Baez and a two-run home run by Ross, his second long ball of the night, to put Wichita ahead 14-9.&nbsp;J.J. D’Orazio pushed an RBI single to right in the home half of the sixth, then each team scored before and after the stretch in the seventh on an Andrew Cossetti long ball and a Gavin Conticello RBI knock.

Walker Jenkins gave the Wind Surge a five-run lead at 16-11 with a solo shot onto the berm in right field in the top of the eighth. Eston Stull and Hunter Hoopes would gather the final six outs to secure the win for Wichita by that score.Darren Bowen earned the win and improved to 3-5 on the year. OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“Alright, as far as injuries go, we had Jake Briningstool still out. Marquise (Hollywood) Brown out. Deon Bush is out. Kristian Fulton is out. Skyy Moore was out. And then, (Drue) Tranquill hurt his back, so he just strained his back a little bit and it was really almost a non-contact thing, so just getting him taken care of. Let’s see who else I can tell you about. Xavier Worthy, so Xavier’s ended up not being a concussion. We had both the NFL involved with clearing and our docs, and he’s got a little liquid – he had a little liquid in his ear, and they took care of that, and it was throwing his equilibrium off just a bit, so that’s a positive thing. But other than that, the guys worked hard, have done a nice job. Today they caught a break with the weather, nice and cool for ‘em and they were flying around, and it was good to see both sides of the ball making plays. Great competition going on, when you do that, you’re going to start improving and that’s the objective in this thing is to get a little better each day. So, with that, time’s yours.”

Q: Do you sense a better energy when the temperature is like this?

REID:&nbsp;“Well yeah, I mean you guys are, more lively (laughter). There is, yeah. You know how it goes. When it’s hot, you’re pushing through. That’s a tough thing, but being out there a couple – two and a half hours or so and the sun and the heat can be a little rough. Practice is rough anyways, now that you add the heat into it and it’s even tougher. Yeah.”

Q: On what Coach Reid teaches Kingsley (Suamataia) with him going against Chris Jones every day.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, that’s going to make you great, right? So, every day you can get better and he’s (Kingsley Suamataia) doing that. He’s battling. They (Kingsley Suamataia and Chris Jones) talk. He and Chris (Jones). Chris has got a ton of respect for him. He knows how good he is and so they work it. And then they were going back and forth today. You know, he had some good ones. Chris had some good ones. Well, they’re getting better. That makes each other better, competition.”

Q: On rotating the offensive linemen.

REID:&nbsp;“It gives you flexibility. So, somebody gets hurt, you plug a guy in. You only can adjust so many on game day. So, you just want to make sure you got some guys that can move around a little bit, whether it is a guard playing center, center playing guard, tackle playing guard. If you’re lucky enough, you might get the one that plays all three. So, all three spots.”

Q: On rebuilding Kingsley Suamataia’s confidence.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, he’s (Kingsley Suamataia) has been on a mission since he got back. He’s been pretty focused in on that. I think he likes that spot. He’s sure taken to it well and he’s willing to work. That’s never been his issue, man. He comes out and he works his tail off. We’ve been happy with what we see. We’ve got to keep going, but powerful kid.”

Q: On what he has learned about Josh Simmons.

REID:&nbsp;“First of all, he’s getting a lot of reps, which I think is important for a rookie. So, he’s been in there and consistently showing up every day and working and not taking plays off or anything like that but he’s a worker. I mean, he’s willing to do it. It’s just a matter of – keep on going, but he’s done a nice job with what we’ve asked him. He’s working on all the fundamentals and techniques, so that’s a challenge for him.”

Q:&nbsp;On Nikko Remigio fighting for a roster spot.

REID:&nbsp;“He’s (Nikko Remigio) is very competitive. They’re all competing like crazy for six or seven spots is what you’re looking at. They’re in there battling their tails off to make one of those positions and Remigio is doing that. I know you know him and how competitive a kid he is. Everything he does, he’s competitive. Now he has that punt return thing that goes into his favor, but we’ve got some other guys that are fighting for that spot too.”

Q:&nbsp;On how important it is for a player to make an impact in special teams and how it affects the final roster spots.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, I tell the guys that. Some of the guys are going to make it because of special teams. Every year you get one or two guys that are on your team because of special teams and maybe they lack a little bit compared to somebody else in the position, but they just excel on special teams so (Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator) David Toub can have a core group, develop a core group in there. Four phases is what he’ll say, so you want to find those guys and try to keep them if you can.”

Q:&nbsp;On his personal knowledge of the new kickoff rules.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, you know I was checking that out yesterday in that game and it’s going to be interesting. There’s some things that if your kicker can place the ball on kickoffs, man, you’re asking a lot of those fielders there and it’s going to be interesting. We’ll see how it all works, but curious to see. We’re fortunate to have (Harrison) Butker I think when it comes to this type of thing.”

Q:&nbsp;On what was going on with Xavier Worthy’s injury.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah, no, listen. He (Xavier Worthy) wanted to get back in. He kept saying: “I don’t feel like I have a concussion” but you got to go through the protocol of it. And, so then they got him up there and examined him and it was what I said with the liquid in the ear, but I know that can throw you off balance and that’s where he was at. He was convinced he didn’t have one all along, but that’s alright we were cautious about it and we’re always going to do that.”

Q:&nbsp;On getting those injured receivers back quickly.

REID:&nbsp;“Yeah. You want numbers at that spot. You need legs, and we play a lot of those guys three at a time, normally. You need all the legs to get through practice.”

Q:&nbsp;What kind of growth are you seeing from Rashee Rice this camp?

REID:&nbsp;“He’s done a nice job off the field. He’s doing a nice job on the field. Sometimes you learn from your mistakes, you know that’s the important part. All of that and the on the field, he’s been full speed ahead.”

Q:&nbsp;Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub has said that you’re the best returner that they have at this time; when you hear something like that how does it make you feel?

REMIGIO:&nbsp;“This is my first time hearing that, so I take it with a grain of salt. You know I think the thing that I’ve learned with this business is that if you get too comfortable, you’re gonna get got. I work too hard to get to this point in my career, to get to year three, to let it slip through my fingers. So, you know really, I approach every day like I’m an undrafted rookie, that barely got a shot to make it to the NFL and (so) I’m scratching and clawing to just get an opportunity.”

Q:&nbsp;Have you approached camp any differently compared to past years?

REMIGIO:&nbsp;“I wouldn’t say I approached camp any differently. I’d say that there’s a little bit more comfortability, just having more familiarity with the offense. You know, I think the last time I spoke to you guys, it was figuring out what Pat (Patrick Mahomes) wants, and what the difference that is from how they install the offense. Now I feel like I’m at the point where, (I’m like) okay what’re my strengths in this offense? How can I find space? How can I manipulate the defense? How can I manipulate the defender within the scheme of the offense and stay on Pat’s timing? I’d say that would be the biggest difference for me in this camp.”

Q:&nbsp;What is it like working with a young receiver group and working with Mac Dalena?

REMIGIO:&nbsp;“Man, it is so awesome. So, Mac (Dalena) actually, when I was at Cal, I think it was my sophomore or junior year, Mac had attended a kid’s camp. And I was coaching Mac, like one of the college receivers helping out at the kid’s camp; and then I ended up transferring to Fresno State and was playing with him over there at Fresno State. When I saw that he got signed here man, it was like just such a cool full circle moment . And man, he’s doing his thing, he’s doing his thing, and I am just so happy to see him making plays at this level and you know, it’s not too big of a moment for him. As somebody who has kind of watched his growth – from when he was a kid to playing with him as a teammate and now up here in the NFL, it’s really such a cool opportunity.”

Q: What part of the game have you been focusing on the most?

SIMMONS:&nbsp;“Right now it’s really understanding defenses, that way I can play a lot faster.&nbsp;Like, if I can see a front and anticipate that they may do a stunt, or a blitz, or a defensive end might drop. Then I can easily kind of help Kingsley (Suamataia) and communicate stuff like that.”

Q: How does it feel to be coached by Andy Heck and Juan Castillo?

SIMMONS:&nbsp;“They (Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck and Michigan Offensive Analyst Juan Castillo) put like a plethora of different pass sets (and) different hand movements into my toolbox. So, it’s like the best resource (that) any rookie can have. Just having that in your back pocket (and) asking after a pass rush, ‘What did I do wrong here? How can I fix it?’ and then going to the next rep and then making those corrections. It’s amazing.”

Q: On the veterans helping adjust to the NFL.&nbsp;

Long-standing concerns about military helicopters flying in crowded airspace and worries over short staffing among federal aviation workers emerged Thursday as key factors in investigators' inquiry into the fatal midair crash between an Army helicopter and a commercial airliner earlier this year.

During the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/midair-collision-ntsb-washington-dc-army-helicopter-40f94a495e2e60b9adc5b9a49cce6437">second of three days of witness testimony and public inquiry</a>&nbsp;by the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/dc-crash-investigation-american-airlines-helicopter-ntsb-b78bce07efa055aa6f9c04e580ffe24e">National Transportation Safety Board</a>&nbsp;into the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ronald-reagan-national-airport-crash-62adba7fb1f546b4cf1716e42b86482b#:~:text=a%20military%20helicopter.-,ARLINGTON%2C%20Va.,in%20almost%20a%20quarter%20century.">January midair crash</a>&nbsp;over the Potomac River, the board focused on air traffic control.

The NTSB heard Thursday that it was common for pilots to ask to use visual separation — basically relying on their eyesight — just as the Army Black Hawk’s pilot agreed to do the night of the crash. FAA officials also said controllers relied heavily on pilots using visual separation as a way to manage the complex airspace with so many helicopters flying around Washington D.C.

But Rick Dressler, an official with medevac operator Metro Aviation, told the board it is difficult to identify other aircraft in the night sky around Ronald Reagan National Airport, especially if an onboard locator system was switched off, as Army choppers routinely did.

Dressler said that he and other civilian helicopter pilots have long been concerned about military helicopters flying around Reagan airport.

“I don’t like saying this. I’ll say it again on the record," Dressler, a former Army aviator and retired Air Force officer, said. “I’m speaking for my group there. We we are all very uncomfortable when those two units are operating.”

The Department of Defense referred questions about Thursday’s testimony to the Army, who did not immediately respond.

The Air Force also did not immediately respond to questions about Dressler’s remarks.

The American Airlines jet arrived from Wichita, Kansas, carrying, among others,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/washington-plane-collision-victims-ee829891574aa35a30d8262b7e07e638">a group of elite young figure skaters</a>, their parents and coaches, and four union steamfitters from the Washington area.

The collision was the nation’s deadliest plane crash since November 2001 and was the first in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/air-india-crash-aviation-safety-76215f9d429274f3b5089e81baa97d6a">string of crashes</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/airline-flight-military-bomber-north-dakota-d4fb212c7875e89b2e9c7ec29709d74d">near misses</a>&nbsp;this year, despite statistics that still show flying remains the safest form of transportation.

It’s too early for the board to identify what exactly caused the crash. The board’s final report won’t be released until sometime next year.

James Jarvis helped evaluate Reagan airport operations for several years. During a 2022 evaluation, he said the airport was so far out of compliance on more than 33 items that the audit was stopped to help the facility identify where to improve.

Jarvis said that he was concerned about staffing levels, particularly the lack of support staff who helped air traffic controllers focus on what they needed to. And he said controller staffing levels were always on the low side.

"At one point I was told to quit bringing it up,” said Jarvis who works for FAA contractor Leidos.

In response to Jarvis' comments, the FAA said in a statement that it has “supercharged the air traffic controller hiring pipeline – shaving months off the process and incentivizing new recruits with bonuses, which resulted in the busiest July in FAA Academy’s history.”

Communications on board the helicopter moments before the collision were released as part of the board's investigation.

The Black Hawk pilots told the control tower twice that they had the passenger plane in sight and would maintain proper distance. But when the controller instructed the pilots to “pass behind” the jet, the crew didn’t hear that instruction because the helicopter's microphone key was pressed at that moment.

Just before the collision the helicopter's instructor pilot asked the pilot to come left. But it wasn’t clear if the pilot had time to maneuver before the crash.

“Kinda come left for me ma'am,” the instructor said.

Bryan Lehman, who has worked for the FAA for more than 35 years, said during Thursday's hearings that the agency must do better at listening to safety concerns.

Lehman, who works at a regional radar facility that directs planes into the D.C. area, said he sent a detailed memo in 2023 urging the FAA to reduce flights coming in and out of Reagan airport. But Lehman said the issue was dropped.

At several points throughout the hearing, NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy reminded FAA and Army witnesses that they are covered by whistleblower protections and shouldn’t be disciplined for anything they say.

But just before lunch on Thursday, she ordered a change in seating arrangements after a supervisor elbowed an FAA employee in midsentence during testimony, prompting that person to stop speaking.

“We want people to be fully transparent and feel safe in providing us answers. So we’re going to switch the panelists. I’m not going to put up with that,” Homendy said.

On the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/midair-collision-ntsb-washington-dc-army-helicopter-40f94a495e2e60b9adc5b9a49cce6437">first day of hearings Wednesday, investigators</a>&nbsp;highlighted the warnings about helicopter traffic that the Federal Aviation Administration received years before the tragedy over the Potomac River.

Homendy urged the FAA to “Fix it. Do better” at the end of a fiery exchange when she highlighted the warnings the agency ignored years earlier. She also suggested the Army adopt a formal policy making it clear that helicopter pilots should never fly under landing planes because pilots told investigators they were doing that routinely.

“Every sign was there that there was a safety risk and the tower was telling you that,” Homendy said.

But there were 21 bureaucratic steps the tower had to follow to get a change made and after the accident the FAA transferred managers out of the tower instead of acknowledging that they had been warned.

“What you did is you transferred people out instead of taking ownership over the fact that everybody in FAA in the tower was saying there was a problem,” Homendy said. “But you guys are pointing out, ‘Welp, our bureaucratic process. Somebody should have brought it up at some other symposium.’ Are you kidding me? 67 people are dead. How do you explain that?”

Ben Shtuhl, whose longtime girlfriend Melissa Nicandri was on the passenger jet, hopes the hearings will lead to accountability and meaningful reforms. But he sensed a lack of urgency, particularly from the FAA.

“We would think with a catastrophe like this that it would be kind of all hands on deck and that they would try to break the red tape and try to be proactive,” Shtuhl said.

Concern about distances between planes and helicopters

John Cox, an aviation safety expert and retired airline pilot, said the hearings are headed in the right direction to determine what happened and to prevent similar accidents.

His main concerns focus on the Black Hawk helicopter, including why it was above the 200-feet (61 meters) elevation limit for that particular helicopter route. Another question is why the Black Hawk wasn’t closer to the east bank of the Potomac River, where it would have been further away from landing airplanes.

“I’ve passed helicopters underneath me over the east bank of the Potomac a lot of times,” said Cox, who flew commercial airliners for 25 years. “And there’s always been plenty of separation. It’s not a lot because the space is so constrained. But you’re dealing with professional pilots and it’s not been a problem.”

Investigators said Wednesday the flight data recorder showed the helicopter was actually 80 feet to 100 feet (24 to 30 meters) higher than the barometric altimeter the pilots relied upon showed they were flying.

But when the controller instructed the pilots to “pass behind” the jet, the crew didn’t hear that instruction because the helicopter's microphone key was pressed at that moment.Just before the collision the helicopter's instructor pilot asked the pilot to come left. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;will not run for California governor next year, leaving open the possibility that she could mount a third run for the White House in 2028.

“Over the past six months, I have spent time reflecting on this moment in our nation’s history and the best way for me to continue fighting for the American people and advancing the values and ideals I hold dear,” Harris said in a statement released by her office Wednesday.

“I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor. I love this state, its people and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” she said.

Harris' decision extends a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-2028-democrats-california-president-governor-6d3b5bef946b9c51c8096328865d3a84">guessing game</a>&nbsp;about her political future that started after she lost last year’s presidential election to Donald Trump. Harris spent months privately considering whether to run for governor, stage another run for the White House or step away from electoral politics altogether after her bruising defeat by Trump.

She has not ruled out another run for president, after unsuccessful bids in 2020 and 2024. It’s not known when she will make that decision.

In her statement, Harris never mentions Trump directly but said “our politics, our government, and our institutions have too often failed the American people, culminating in this moment of crisis.”

“For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office. I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans,” Harris added.

“In the United States of America, power must lie with the people. And We, the People must use our power to fight for freedom, opportunity, fairness and the dignity of all. I will remain in that fight,” the statement said.

Harris would have entered the crowded contest to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom as a front-runner given her widespread name recognition, fundraising prowess and track record of winning statewide elections. Before serving as U.S. senator and vice president, she was elected state attorney general and district attorney in San Francisco.

But after years in Washington on the national and international stage, it was never clear if Harris was interested in returning to the less-glamorous world of statehouse politics in Sacramento.

Outside California, Harris’ political career has been marked by historic firsts but also disappointments.

Harris sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, but dropped out of the race before the leadoff Iowa caucuses — the first defeat of her political career. After Joe Biden chose her as his running mate, she made history as the first woman, Black person or person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. In 2024, Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee after Biden left the race months before Election Day and endorsed her. She lost that race to Trump, who won every swing state.

Harris faces some uncertainty if she chooses to make another White House run.

Harris would have to convince national Democrats that she’s the face of the party’s future, despite&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-day-trump-harris-white-house-83c8e246ab97f5b97be45cdc156af4e2">losing</a>&nbsp;to Trump last fall. She also carries the baggage of being tied to Biden, whom Democrats have increasingly criticized for seeking a second term rather than stepping aside. Any candidate will have to unify a fractious Democratic Party with low approval&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/poll-democrats-pessimism-sanders-ocasio-cortez-schumer-8dcde90d9666721fb376db90140f8e23">ratings</a>&nbsp;that is struggling to slow Trump’s agenda in Washington.

In her most extensive public remarks since leaving office in January, Harris said in a San Francisco speech that Trump’s leadership represented a “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-speech-california-trump-democrats-governor-7f3fe64bfb93fcd39a5d06c39b2935f7">wholesale abandonment</a>&nbsp;” of American ideals.

Harris’ decision not to seek the governorship keeps the contest to replace Newsom wide open. The Democratic field includes former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former Biden administration health secretary Xavier Becerra and a handful of state officeholders.
