“Millions of Americans are suffering from poor access to healthcare, manufacturing and job losses, and a failing infrastructure, yet continue to be persuaded to vote against their best interests because they do not see themselves reflected in the America of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/us-democratic-party">Democratic Party</a>,” the report says.

The autopsy points to a reduction in support and training for Democratic state parties, voter registration shifts and “a persistent inability or unwillingness to listen to all voters.”

Thursday’s release comes as Martin confronts&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/democratic-national-committee-martin-democrats-midterms-9caf0c6b0e5e7c1c7a716ae1263908ae">a crisis of confidence</a>&nbsp;among party officials who are increasingly concerned about the health of their political machine barely a year into his term. Some Democratic operatives have had informal discussions about recruiting a new chair, even though most believe that Martin’s job wasn’t in serious jeopardy ahead of the midterm elections.

The report found that Harris and her allies failed to focus enough on Trump’s negatives, especially his felony convictions. This was part of a broader criticism that Democrats’ messaging is too focused on reason and winning arguments, “even in cycles when the electorate is defined by rage.”

“There was a decision in the 2024 Democratic leadership not to engage in negative advertising at the scale required,” the report states. “The Trump campaign and supportive Super PACs went full throttle against Vice President Harris, but there was not sufficient or similar negative firepower directed at Trump by Democrats.”

The report continues: “It was essential to prosecute a more effective case as to why Trump should have been disqualified from ever again taking office. The grounds were there, but the messaging did not make the case.”

Trump’s attack on Harris’ transgender policies were cited as a key contrast.

Specifically, the report suggested the Democratic nominee was “boxed” in by the Trump campaign’s “very effective” ad that highlighted Harris’ previous statement of support for taxpayer-funded gender-affirming surgeries for prison inmates.

Democratic pollsters believed that “if the Vice President would not change her position – and she did not – then there was nothing which would have worked as a response,” the report said.

The report criticized Harris’ outreach to key segments of America while condemning the party’s focus on “identity politics.”

“Harris wrote off rural America, assuming urban/suburban margins would compensate. The math doesn’t work,” the report says. “You can’t lose rural areas by overwhelming margins and make it up elsewhere when rural voters are a significant share of the electorate. If Democrats are to reclaim leadership in the Heartland or the South, candidates must perform well in rural turf. Show up, listen, and then do it again.”

The report also references Democrats’ underperformance with male voters of color.

“Male voters require direct engagement. The gender gap can be narrowed. Deploy male messengers, address economic concerns, and don’t assume identity politics will hold male voters of color,” it says.

This was part of a broader criticism that Democrats’ messaging is too focused on reason and winning arguments, “even in cycles when the electorate is defined by rage.”“There was a decision in the 2024 Democratic leadership not to engage in negative advertising at the scale required,” the report states. “The Trump campaign and supportive Super PACs went full throttle against Vice President Harris, but there was not sufficient or similar negative firepower directed at Trump by Democrats.”The report continues: “It was essential to prosecute a more effective case as to why Trump should have been disqualified from ever again taking office. The grounds were there, but the messaging did not make the case.”Trump’s attack on Harris’ transgender policies were cited as a key contrast.Specifically, the report suggested the Democratic nominee was “boxed” in by the Trump campaign’s “very effective” ad that highlighted Harris’ previous statement of support for taxpayer-funded gender-affirming surgeries for prison inmates.Democratic pollsters believed that “if the Vice President would not change her position – and she did not – then there was nothing which would have worked as a response,” the report said.<h2>‘The math doesn’t work’</h2>The report criticized Harris’ outreach to key segments of America while condemning the party’s focus on “identity politics.”“Harris wrote off rural America, assuming urban/suburban margins would compensate. This program in particular&nbsp;rewards and empowers middle and high school theatre programs that demonstrate outstanding student leadership, creativity, and engagement across all theatrical disciplines.

Central and the other schools will receive complimentary production licenses for Disney musicals, access to exclusive industry webinars, and the chance to showcase their talent on major stages like the International Thespian Festival.

Cosmosphere International SciEd Center &amp; Space Museum

Through a continued partnership between the Cosmosphere and Kansas State University Salina, a team of senior students led by Dr. Balaji Balasubramaniam, Dr. Annie Hoekman, and Dr. Michael Oetken, have developed an immersive virtual reality experience that will soon become part of the Cosmosphere’s educational camp programming.

The students involved in the production include Diego Hinojosa, Dylan Hoeffner, Jacob Klataske, Alec Mendoza, Hunter Taylor, William Ramberg, and Zabdiel Ramirez.

The project, titled ISS Rupture Simulation, places participants aboard the International Space Station during an emergency scenario. Using virtual reality technology, campers will search through a virtual model of the ISS looking for ruptures using an audio amplifier listening for air leaks and repairing them with branded patches.


Created as part of the students’ senior capstone project at Kansas State University Salina, the simulation was designed specifically for use within the Cosmosphere’s camp experiences, further expanding the organization’s hands-on and immersive STEAM education opportunities.


During a presentation of the final development, a representative from an additional partner, Pure Imagination Studios, attended the demonstration of the project alongside staff and leadership from both the Cosmosphere and Kansas State University Salina. The demonstration showcased the completed VR experience and highlighted the collaborative effort behind the immersive educational tool.


The collaboration reflects the shared commitment between the Cosmosphere and Kansas State University Salina to inspire the next generation through innovation, experiential learning, and space education.

Saline County Commissioners on Tuesday’s public meeting approved the project of the Health Department location to move into the current and soon to be, former building of the Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC).

The building on 651 E. Prescott Ave. (current SFHC location) will improve the working experience of the Saline County Health Department as soon as practical, according to Saline County.

A committee was formed to review nine proposals from tenants for the project that consisted of: 

Matt Stiles, County Administrator, Jason Tiller, Health Department Director, Candice Sauers Health Department Deputy Director, Haylee LeFort, Clinic Receptionist and Linn Exline, Community Member at large.

The committee chose <a href="https://tessere.com/">Tessere</a>, as they felt the tenant "paid attention and listened to the stakeholders during the walkthroughs and interviews, including current challenges and future directions of the whole Prescott facility, not just the health department areas."

A statement from the Saline County Commission packet said “Tessere and their team really demonstrated that they understood the assignment and will be a valuable team player throughout this process, not only to the Health Department staff, but to County Administration and County Commissioners as well.”

The total project cost is $94,710.

The fees will be paid by the Health Department Capital Improvement Fund, which has a current balance of $646,411.

Tessere is an architectural, engineering and design firm company headquartered in Wichita. It was founded in 1919 and is licensed to practice architecture in 48 states.&nbsp;

There are no public records that Tessere has conducted or completed a project in Saline/Saline County.

Tiller reaffirmed to Commissioners the committee felt that Tessere “listened to us, understood our current challenges, what we need to accomplish to not only satisfy our needs, but also thinking about the future. Overwhelmingly, the committee felt this was the company that would help us accomplish that.”

As the school year comes to a close, Salina Public Library is preparing for another exciting summer filled with reading, learning, and family fun. This year’s summer season invites the community to read together, attend free events, and participate in programs designed to keep kids and adults engaged all summer long.

At the center of the library’s summer initiative is the community reading challenge, encouraging participants of all ages to read or listen to books throughout the summer for chances to win prizes. Community members can submit the number of books they complete each week either in person at the library or online through the library’s website. Picture books, chapter books, novels, and audiobooks all count toward the challenge.

The summer season officially begins with the Summer Kickoff Party on Friday, May 22, from 5–7 p.m. at Caldwell Plaza south of the library. Families can enjoy carnival games, face painting, and free pizza while supplies last. Summer Learning Packets will also be available beginning that day in the Technology Center. These free packets are designed to help prevent the summer slide with age-appropriate reading and activity challenges. Completed packets can be returned to the library in exchange for prize tickets.

To help support local families throughout the summer, the library is once again partnering with St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church to provide free grab-and-go lunches beginning May 28 through July 31. Lunches will be available weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the McKenzie Center across from the library. Lunches are first-come, first-served, with priority given to youth ages 0–18.

Later in the summer, participants will have opportunities to celebrate their reading accomplishments. The library’s summer season runs from May 22 through July 30, with the final prize drawing taking place on July 31. The Youth Summer Pool Party will be held on Sunday, July 26, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Kenwood Cove. Free tickets will be available at the Youth Services desk beginning Monday, July 20. Each ticket admits one youth and one adult, and youth ages 11 and older may attend without an adult. The Adult Summer Party will be held on Friday, July 31, from 5–7 p.m. at Ad Astra Books and Coffee House. The event will feature live music from J. Michael Terrell and raffle prize drawings for summer reading participants.&nbsp;

Three day weather forecast Salina, May 15 - May 17

During National Police Week (May 10 - 16), the annual Peace Officer Memorial at Jerry Ivey Park took place on a beautiful Wednesday morning.

The Memorial in Salina, is meant to honor the fallen, while in the line-of-duty of those who served in the Salina Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Saline County Sheriff's Office.

"Officer Memorial services remind me that this job is extremely dangerous and you never know when you may be facing a life or death situation in this profession," said Salina PD Chief, C.J. Wise. "I have experienced the loss of a fellow officer dying in the line of duty.&nbsp; This made me and many of my fellow officers realize our own mortality.&nbsp; I have seen this realization make officers question if this job is no longer for them.&nbsp; I have also personally experienced the realization that God put this career in the DNA of many officers and regardless of the dangers, they are going to show up the next day because that is what God created them to do."

Just two days before the memorial, an officer-involved shooting occurred in north Salina.

With the timing of the shooting, Salina Post asked Chief Wise, if this incident made him appreciate the memorial more.&nbsp;

"No, but this incident reaffirmed that God is good and listens to our prayers. I, along with many in our community, pray for the safety of our officers regularly. As soon as I learned of the incident and the safety of our officers, I thanked God. He showed up this day in the extraordinary and every day in the ordinary. When you look for the hand of God you can see it in all aspects of this incident and countless others."

He then stated what he would like everyone to know, of how important it is to respect, honor and remember those who have fallen.

"I believe that sometimes people can detach their feelings from fallen officers, because it can be seen as part of what they signed up for. This is not true, no officer signs up for this, but knows it could come to that.&nbsp; When an officer dies in the line of duty it forever changes a family, a department, and a community."

Respected, honored and remembered&nbsp;in the memorial were the following officers, deputies and troopers:

- Died in a traffic accident, December 16, 1944, on U.S. 40 west of Russell, KS. He was the first member of the Highway Patrol to give his life in the line of duty.

- Died in a traffic accident, October 6, 1959, while making an emergency blood run from El Dorado to Eureka. While attempting to pass a grain truck, the truck turned left in front of Jacobs.

- Died in a traffic accident, December 9, 1966, after being struck by a drunk driver on K-18 between Manhattan and Ogden. The drunk driver had a blood alcohol content of .168

- Death by gunfire during a traffic stop on Turnpike north of El Dorado on July 11, 1981. As he was approaching the vehicle, the suspect jumped out and fired two rounds, striking&nbsp;Pribbenow in the chest and neck.&nbsp;

- Died from injuries that occurred in a traffic accident on U.S. 81 south of Concordia, KS on November 3, 1993. He served 23 years with the Patrol.

- Fatally injured when struck by a motor vehicle while performing a motor carrier safety inspection, September 6, 1995. The Goodheart Law was signed into law by Gov. Graves on May 16, 2000, requiring drivers to slow down and move over near stopped emergency vehicles.

- Fatal heart attack during a vehicle pursuit and stop sticks deployment on Rte. 96 near Ridge Rd. West of Maize, KS. Trooper Newport served with the KHP for 19 years and in law enforcement for a total of 35 years.

- Died in a traffic accident, May 28, 1967 on the Kansas Turnpike, after being hit head on by a car being towed in a rainstorm that jackknifed.

- Death by gunfire during an arrest of bank robbers, January 19, 1968 in Overland Park, KS. Miller drove a patrol car up to provide cover for other other officers who were pinned down when he was shot in the head. He is the first member of the Highway Patrol to be killed by gunfire.

- Death by gunfire while checking a hitchhiker on I-70 east of Topeka, October 2, 1973. The suspect shot Thornton while he was searching his bags.

- Death by gunfire during a traffic stop on the turnpike near Matfield Green, KS on May 24, 1978. O'Brien was found with gunshot wounds to the head after a trucker reported seeing the Trooper in the ditch.

-Death by a traffic accident while on duty, May 31, 1942. Officer Eaton was struck by a car while walking across a local intersection, after speaking with two Salina Police Officers.

- Death by gunfire during an arrest, June 13, 1975. Officer Ivey was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire with a suspect in an early morning armed robbery.

- Death by gunfire during an arrest, February 12, 1917. After responding to a call involving a public disturbance, Officer Stonebraker and Chief of Police Howard Burke entered a rooming house where the suspect was located. Upon entering, the man opened fire immediately killing Officer Stonebraker and wound Chief Burke.

- Death by gunfire during an arrest, November 29, 1920. While on night patrol, Officer Carson was shot and killed by a man he ordered off the Union Pacific night train.

- Died of a heart attack during a courtroom struggle with an alleged murderer on September 17, 1952. The prisoner was later sentenced to life for the murder of his ex-wife.

<a href="https://nleomf.org/2025-year-end-officer-fatalities-report/">According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's 2025 Year-End Officer Fatalities Report</a>, there has been a significant decline in line-of-duty deaths nationwide, with 111 officers losing their lives in service to their communities. A 25% decrease from the previous years and the lowest number recorded in more than 80 years.

While the report highlights these reductions in firearm, traffic and other duty-related fatalities, it also serves as a solemn reminder that every statistic represents a life dedicated to protecting others. The average fallen officer was 44 years old, served 14 years in law enforcement, and left behind family, friends and communities forever changed by their sacrifice.

Davids seeks 5th term, plans to focus on affordability, GOP chaos in Congress

TOPEKA — U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids of Kansas formally launched a reelection campaign Monday tied to reinforcing the role of Congress in controlling the rising cost of living for consumers and to moderate disruption within the federal government caused by executive branch overreach.

Davids, who has served the eastern Kansas district since elected in 2018, expects primary and general election challenges. Fairway Democrat Sarah Preu and Republican Chase LaPorte of Mission also have filed for the 3rd District seat in Congress.

“There are a lot of people so dissatisfied with the chaos they see coming out of Washington. I hope to continue to serve the Kansas 3rd and be a voice of reason, get stuff done and try to do everything possible to make life more manageable, less chaotic and make sure we’re actually brining down costs,” Davids said during a news conference after filing in the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office.

She pointed to the economic pinch point of rising fuel prices in wake of President Donald Trump’s war with Iran. She said it would be important for the U.S. House to do its part to address decisions of Republicans to diminish health coverage, weaken public education and deploy tariffs harmful to the agriculture sector.

“Kansans are struggling and it matters to have people in D.C. who are actually trying to focus on the needs of the people of Kansas and not, you know, political gamesmanship and bickering,” Davids said.

Davids, 45, filed to seek a fifth term. She won four previous campaigns by securing at least 53% of the vote. Initially, she defeated incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder. She twice beat GOP nominee Amanda Adkins. Two years ago, she retained the seat in a race against GOP physician Prasanth Reddy.

Rob Fillion, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, issued a statement that said Davids’ record in Congress aligned with priorities of former President Joe Biden. Fillion said the National Democratic Party’s agenda led to consumer inflation, weakened border security and “left working families behind.”

“Her record is not one of independence or moderation,” Fillion said. “It is one of consistent alignment with the most out-of-touch priorities coming out of Washington.”

In 2025 and so far in 2026, the Kansas Legislature has been unable to convene in special session in response to Trump’s request that Kansas’ four House districts be gerrymandered to undermine Davids’ reelection.

During the electoral drama, Davids said she would consider running for U.S. Senate if the state Legislature shattered the 3rd District for benefit of Republicans.

“I was surprised that the Kansas Legislature raised their hands and said that they were willing to try to do it,” she said. “And, then, I was very relieved and happy to see that Kansans made their voices heard. A lot of people reached out to their state legislators. To be honest, there were also Republicans in the state Legislature who said, ‘I’m not going to do this, because it’s not the right thing to do.’ You got to give credit where credit is due.”

Davids said ongoing work in other states to reconfigure congressional boundaries at the behest of Republican and Democratic leadership was a mistake. She said no one should “expect people to feel like their government cares about them if we see legislatures all across the country, and the president of the United States, saying that politicians should be choosing their voters and not the other way around.”

She said one of the first bills she endorsed after sworn into Congress would have forbidden partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts.

The U.S. Supreme Court has since issued rulings affirming the right to states to engage in partisan gerrymandering. There is apprehension among voters that mid-decade redistricting could diminish minority representation in Congress, she said.

“There’s a lot of frustration and anger,” Davids said. “There’s also a lot of fear about what it means for the voters of those southern states. It is especially disheartening to see the gutting of the Voting Rights Act that was put in place for a reason.”

The 3rd District had long been dominated by voter-rich Johnson County as well as the entirety of Wyandotte County. In 2022, in a bid to weaken Davids’ odds of winning reelection, the state Legislature removed the northern half of Wyandotte County from the district and added to the district Republican-leaning Anderson, Franklin and Miami counties.

Davids, the first LGBTQ+ Native American to serve in Congress, is registered with the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin. She grew up in the Leavenworth area and earned a degree at University of Missouri-Kansas City and a law degree at Cornell University.

She said she had heard from many Kansans anxious about the federal government tilting toward special interests capable of bending rules.

“People want leaders who listen, tell the truth and actually fix issues instead of making them worse,” she said. “So, as I run for reelection, my focus remains on working with both parties to lower costs and ensure Washington delivers for hardworking Kansans — not billionaires or powerful corporations.”

Mary Jo Bussart, 84, of Abilene, Kansas passed away peacefully in her sleep, Sunday, may 10th, 2026.

Mary Jo was born March 19, 1942 in Minneapolis, Kansas to John Wesley and Laura Myrtle (Phillips) Bussart.

Mary Jo loved her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She loved to crochet Afghan blankets, watch her favorite soaps and game shows, and listen to classic country music.

After retiring Mary Jo loved watching her grandchildren after school, never missing an opportunity to be a part of their lives.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Jamison; honorary son and grandson, Caleb A Jamison; honorary daughter/granddaughter, Brittany Hanson; grandson’s, Shawn Jamison (Andrea); grandson Kody Bowers; Debra Bowers; Cynthia Jamison; granddaughter, Teea Jamison; grandson, Bradley N Jamison (Alanie); Reilly Hanson (Hunter).
