Kan. man sent to prison for body found in car trunk has died in his cell

 SEDGWICK COUNTY— The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive in his cell at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility this morning.

The inmate, identified as 24-year-old Daitrez J. Birch, was discovered at approximately 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the sheriff' office

. Deputies and on-site medical staff immediately began life-saving measures. Members of the Wichita Fire Department arrived, and Birch was pronounced dead at 8:55 a.m.

Birch had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility since Aug. 27, 2024. He was recently sentenced in Sedgwick County District Court to 272 months in prison for second-degree murder, 43 months for aggravated burglary, and 12 months for criminal desecration.

In accordance with established protocols, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has been notified and will be assisting in the investigation. Detectives remain on-site, conducting a thorough and transparent investigation.

This marks the third in-custody death at Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility this year.
