GODDARD – Kansas Wesleyan softball continued its road swing on Sunday with a pair of home games on the road against Mount Marty University at the Genesis Sports Complex. Mount Marty would take both ends of the doubleheader, winning the first 5-3 and the second in a wild 18-11 decision.

KWU is awaiting its true home opener, as construction continues on the new fields at Salina South High School, which will have an artificial surface, along with other improvements along the way.

In Sunday's opener the Coyotes got on the board first in the bottom of the second, as pinch runner Emma Ramberg (FR/Topeka, Kan.) scored in a fielder's choice by Elizabeth Willison (FR/Moore, Okla.). Ramberg was running for Sydney Brown (JR/Tucson, Ariz.) who led off the frame with a hit.

The Lancers tied it with a run in the third, but the Coyotes regained the lead on Brown's fourth inning homer and extended it in the fifth on Kiana Turner (SO/Quapaw, Okla.)'s sacrifice fly.

Mount Marty got a run in the sixth, then capitalized with a big seventh inning to get past the Coyotes 5-3.

Jessica Vegely (SR/Mariposa, Calif.) and Brown had two hits each for the Coyotes. Carmen Angulo (JR/Long Beach, Calif.) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits, with four strikeouts.

The second game was wild, finishing with Mount Marty winning 18-11. A lot of the scoring was done at the end of the game 17 of the 28 runs scored in the game between the teams came in the final two frames.

After Mount Marty took a 2-0 lead to start the game in the first, the Coyotes came back with four in the bottom of the second all behind a 2 out rally. Willison started the rally with a walk and then Paige Anderson (SO/Lakeville, Minn.) singled. Lauren Blue (SR/Arlington, Texas) reached on an error that brought in a run, Kiana Turner walked in a run, and Brown followed with a 2-run single.

Vegely led off the Coyote fourth with a homer and Angulo would drive in Blue who tripled after Vegely's homer.

The Lancers scored three times in the fifth, six times in the sixth and six more times in the seventh inning to take an 18-6 lead. Then it was KWU's turn.

Paige Welk (JR/Laguna Niguel, Calif.) led off with a hit, Brianna McGinnis (JR/Tucson, Ariz.) reached on an error and Willison drove in the first run with a double. Anderson had a RBI groundout and two batters later Blue started a string of three straight hits for the Coyotes that all yielded runs with a double.

Blue had three hits to lead the Coyotes while Brown drove in three runs. Conally Webb (JR/Royse City, Texas) would suffer the loss in the game.

KWU has picked up a couple games this coming weekend in the Friends Tournament in Wichita, then hopefully what will be the true home opener against Morningside on March 9.
