SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas felon tracked down and arrested after a woman reported an attack that sent her to the hospital is now in the Sedgwick County Jail.
On Friday afternoon, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office reported they were investigating a domestic-related aggravated battery that occurred early Friday along K-42 Highway and and were searching for a suspect identified as 27-year-old Branndon Joseph Bergman.
At approximately 12:18 a.m. Friday, deputies responded to a welfare check involving a woman standing along K-42 Highway between 119th Street West and 135th Street West, according to Sheriff's Department spokesman Branden Stitt.
When deputies arrived, they learned a 22-year-old Harper County woman had been riding in a vehicle with several acquaintances when a disturbance occurred. During the disturbance, Bergman, of Harper County, battered the woman, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff's Spokesman Branden Stitt. No weapons were used.
The woman got out of the vehicle after the incident and later flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911. She later sought treatment at a Wichita hospital, where she was treated and released.
As the investigation continued, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office deputies coordinated with the Harper County Sheriff's Office. Harper County deputies developed information that Bergman might be at a residence in the 100 block of Northeast 50th Road. Because of Bergman's history of violence and known access to weapons, the Harper County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Pratt County Special Response Team and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Law enforcement officers searched the residence but did not locate Bergman. Officers also searched a second location in the 300 block of North Madison in Anthony, but he was not found.
At approximately 7 p.m. Friday, law enforcement in Harper County located and arrested Bergman north of Anthony without incident. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail late Friday evening,.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office had an active felony pickup for Bergman in connection with this aggravated battery investigation. He is also wanted on an active Kansas Department of Corrections warrant for a parole violation. Bergman has nine. previous convictions that include burglary, aggravated battery, theft, domestic battery and obstruction, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections
