Kan. school bus driver, 26 students avoid injury after 3-vehicle crash

RILEY COUNTY—Three drivers and students on a school bus avoided injury in an accident just after 3:30p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Freightliner semi driven by  Scott Alan Sheely, 61, Clyde, was westbound on U.S. 77 just west of Crooked Creek Road.

The semi rear-ended a 2012 Buick Regal driven by Merlin Benson Chestnut, 69, Clay Center, who braked suddenly when he noticed the red stop sign activated on a school bus stopped on the south shoulder to let kids out at a home. 

After impact the Buick struck the bus driven by Robert Deemie, 69, of Manhattan, with 26-students on board.  There were no injuries reported.  All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
