SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s deputy was struck by a vehicle Thursday night while on scene investigating an earlier crash
Just after 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a non-injury crash at the intersection of Kansas 42 and Maize Road, according to Sheriff's Department Spokesman Branden Stitt.
While outside his patrol vehicle and investigating the initial crash, a westbound pickup struck the deputy.
Sedgwick County EMS initially reported the deputy’s injuries as critical but later upgraded his condition to serious upon transport to a Wichita hospital. The 39-year-old deputy who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since July 2023, continues to recover. He remains hospitalized but is alert and has been speaking with colleagues and family, according to Stitt.
The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) has taken over the investigation. The case remains under active investigation by KHP. The name of the deputy has not been released.
