16-year-old jailed for deadly shooting in Kansas park

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement have arrested a 16-year-old for a deadly weekend shooting.

Just before 1a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to a reported shooting in the 2100 block of E. Murdock, within Sim Park in Wichita, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

Upon arrival, officers located two individuals who had sustained gunshot wounds. One victim, identified as 19-year-old David Hernandez-Cervantez, was transported to a local hospital and later died of his injuries, according to Gupilan

The second victim, a 22-year-old man from Wichita, remains hospitalized in critical condition. Through the investigation, a 16-year-old from Wichita was identified as a suspect and has been arrested on requested charges of second-degree murder.

The victims and the suspect are known to each other and this shooting was not a random incident. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation as detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
