SHAWNEE COUNTY—A family pet was injured in a fire on Monday in Topeka.

Just after noon on Monday, crews responded to a house fire at 1268 SW Polk Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Alan Stahl.

First responders found smoke coming from a two-story house divided into apartments. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, and kept the fire confined to the room of fire origin. Multiple occupants were home at the time of the fire and were able to evacuate before the fire department arrived on scene. Fire crews rescued one dog and provided emergency care. The pet was then transported to a veterinarian by its owner.

After preliminary investigation the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The residence did not have smoke detectors, according to Stahl.
