Manhattan —Investigators say improperly discarding of smoking material caused a fire at a home in Manhattan.
Just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire at 156 North Dartmouth, according to assistant Fire Chief Mike Kaus.
First responders found the two-story home with heavy fire on the back of the residence. The fire extended into the attic space and was extinguished within 30 minutes. Riley County EMS evaluated one occupant for smoke inhalation.
The residents evacuated prior to the fire department's arrival. Loss is estimated at $25,000 to contents and $75,000 to the structure.
The fire cause is accidental due to discarded smoking materials. A reminder to discard smoking materials in an approved container filled with sand or water.
