2021 Kan. officer of the year due in court on sex crime charges

FORD COUNTY — A man recognized in 2021 as Kansas Law Enforcement Officer of the Year faces sex crime allegations and is due in court Thursday.

A Ford County grand jury indicted former Dodge City police officer Guillermo Gutierrez  for rape and aggravated sexual battery, according to a statement from the Ford County Attorney's office.

The charges stem from an incident alleged to have occurred on May 19, 2022 in Dodge City.

Gutierrez is scheduled for a first appearance and arraignment hearing on Thursday, according to the district attorney's office. Gutierrez is represented by Van Z. Hampton of Warrior Lawyers International of Dodge City, Kansas.

Rape is a severity level 1 person felony. It is punishable by a prison sentence of between 147 and 653 months and a fine of up to $300,000.

Aggravated sexual battery is a severity level 5 person felony, punishable by a prison sentence of between 31 and 136 months and a fine of up to $300,000.
