SHAWNEE COUNTY—One person was injured in an apartment building fire Thursday in Shawnee County.

Just after 8p.m., fire crews responded to a three-alarm fire at a three-story apartment building located at 115 NE Redbud Circle in Topeka, Kansas, according to Fire Marshal Alan Stahl.

Due to the advanced fire conditions, crews began a defensive fire attack in an attempt to keep the fire contained to the structure. A nearby building received heat damage to its exterior. Firefighters performed a primary search and found one victim with life-threatening injuries.

That individual was transported to a local hospital to be treated.  One other adult was also transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

There were ten occupied apartments and the total damage is estimated to be $1.5 million, with $1 million associated with structural loss and $500,000 associated with content loss.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
