Kan. inmate serving time for selling heroin has died

Hutchinson, KAN. – Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) resident Devon Malechi Stutesman, 24, died Monday, March 3, 2025. Stutesman was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived. He was transported to a local hospital where he died Monday afternoon. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Stutesman was serving a 122-month sentence for convictions of possession and distribution of heroin and attempt to traffic firearms into a correctional facility in Lyon County, Kansas.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
