Sheriff: Stolen Jeep found floating in Kansas River

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stolen vehicle found in submerged in a river in Douglas County.

Just after 7a.m. Wednesday, a person in the area of Riverfront Park, 1594 N 3rd Street in Lawrence, noticed a vehicle in the Kansas River, according to a statement from the Douglas County Sheriff.  The caller was unsure if someone was in the vehicle.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical responded to the scene and determined no one was in the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Douglas County Underwater Search and Recovery team responded to remove the the vehicle from the water.

Deputies identified the vehicle owner who reported the vehicle was missing Wednesday morning from their residence in Leavenworth County. He was in the process of making a report of the stolen vehicle to law enforcement.

The underwater search and recovery team eventually removed the Jeep from the water. There were no injuries.
