COWLEY COUNTY—Explosive experts responded to assist law enforcement with the investigation of an unknown device found in Winfield.
On December 9, during an active investigation, sheriff's deputies located unclaimed property in the 1500 block of Main Street in Winfield, according to Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti.
The item was collected and transported to the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office for further examination. During the evaluation process, an additional item was discovered that appeared to be an unknown device. In accordance with safety protocols, the Wichita Bomb Squad was contacted and responded to retrieve the item.
For the safety of the public, the area south of the Cowley County Courthouse was temporarily closed during the response.
The sheriff's office released no additional details late Tuesday.
