JUNCTION CITY - Multiple counties/agencies involved in a highway pursuit, resulted in an arrest of male suspect and currently searching for other suspects.
According to the Junction City Police Department (JCPD) on Wednesday, June 25th at approximately 11:24 pm, a detective with JCPD attempted to conduct a traffic stop on I-70. The vehicle failed to stop and fled, prompting a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
The pursuit involved several counties/agencies including; JCPD, Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle became disabled near McDowell Creek Road.
Afterwards, JCPD stated that three individuals fled from the vehicle on foot and initiated a large-scale manhunt.
An 'Everbridge alert' was sent to residents in the area, advising them of the potentially dangerous individuals and urging them to take necessary precautions. Law enforcement personnel from all previously mentioned agencies immediately began a coordinated search of the area. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s air unit also provided critical aerial support during the manhunt.
After an extensive search, the primary suspect identified as Robeon Demetrius Downs of Kentucky, was located and taken into custody.
During that time, the search was called off.
A search of the suspect vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 84 pounds of marijuana and over $18,000 in U.S. dollars.
According to JCPD, it is believed that the other individuals who fled the scene are no longer in the immediate area and residents in the McDowell Creek area are encouraged to remain vigilant.
