Kansas felon threatened police with a machete

LYON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a violent altercation in Lyon County.

Just before 4p.m. Wednesday, police were dispatched to the west central part of Emporia for a report of a domestic violence call, according to Police Captain Ray Mattas.

At the scene, the officers were confronted by a man later identified as 55-year-old Dwayne L. Ford who was armed with a machete.  The officers were able to get all other people out of the house and the officers exited the house as well.

Detective Kevin Shireman was called to the scene to negotiate with Ford. During the negotiation  Ford left the residence, still armed with the machete. Officers deployed a 40 mm rubber blunt impact projectile, striking Ford in the leg.

Ford retreated back into the residence and after additional negotiations . Ford surrendered. He was taken into custody just before 7p.m., according to Mattas.

Ford will be treated for any possible injuries sustained from the impact projectile. Once he is cleared medically he will be transported to the Lyon County Jail.

The Emporia Police Department will propose the charges of battery and aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer to the Lyon County Attorney’s Office for their review. Ford also had an outstanding warrant for bond revocation through the Lyon County District Court. Ford has previous convictions for robbery and drugs, according to the Kan. Dept. of Corrections.
