JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Johnson County, Kansas.
Just after 4:30a.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to a burglary in progress at Target, 6100 Broadmoor in the city of Mission, Kansas, according to a media release. Officers responded to both the front and rear of the store to establish a perimeter.
Soon after arrival an officer witnessed a person at the rear of the store carrying duffle bags. The officer confronted the suspect who fled on foot. The officer gave chase. The suspect then fired a handgun at the officer, discharging multiple rounds toward the officer.
The officer returned fire, striking the suspect. First aid was rendered by officers on scene, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital. The suspect’s injuries are non-life threatening. No officers were hurt during this incident.
The Johnson County Officer Involved Critical Incident Team will be handling the investigation and all media inquiries should be directed to that team.
The Target store is one of multiple crime scenes in this incident. Police released no additional details.
