JOHNSON COUNTY—A Kansas man faces charges for a fatal crash that killed a Kansas teen last summer.

On Thursday Matthew Thomas Bray, 49,  was charged with aggravated battery while driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident involving great bodily harm, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

In July of 2024, a vehicle driven by Bray struck and killed  a pedestrian identified as  Benjamin D. Van Buskirk, 17, Olathe, who ran across lanes of traffic to offer assistance to a driver involved in another accident.

Van Buskirk had been a passenger in a 2008 Honda CRV driven by Ammar M. Aljishi, 17, Spring Hill, that was stopped on the right shoulder of the highway.

Van Buskirk was pronounced dead at the scene. Bray is due back in court August 27, according to the district attorney's office.
